Re: Dr. William J. Wackerle & Susan F. Anderson - Morgan County, Illinois

I am not connected to the Wackerle family, but thought an article I came across regarding William Wackerle and his wife Wilburga [Waldburga?] might be of interest. This story was recounted in the Herald Despatch in Decator, Illinois September 20, 1890 and seems to be about a different William Wackerle, not the physician. However, many of the place names you cite, including St. Louis and Louisiana, are mentioned in this story. Perhaps you can use it to tie some of the family members together. I'll quote some of it:
An Interesting Insurance Case
Capt Joseph Weinman...is an old soldier and an old insurance man as well, and some years ago played a prominent part in a case which is generally known to insurance men.... In life insurance history it is known as the Wackerle case...."
[per Joseph Weinmann] "At the close of the war,[Civil War] Wm. Wackerle and his wife were living in Minnesota. He had taken out a policy [with Aetna and Mutual Insurance]...for several thousand dollars each. ...I knew him personally [during the war]. The Wackerle family went to St. Louis and then to Quincy. Here, owing to a difference of opinion with his wife Wackerle left for Louisiana to work on a railroad keeping his whereabouts unknown to his wife but telling a brother in St. Louis that he would make his way to California and live there. Sometime afterwards an unknown man was killed on a railroad near Shreveport and was supposed to be Wackerle. His wife heard of his reported death and visiting the spot got a number of neroes to swear that they had heard the man frequently say his name was Wackerle. This formed the basis of the suit which she brought against the Aetna company and won in the lower courts. It was early in the '70s and at the time I was still living in Minnesota. An item...attracted my attention to the case. It struck me as remarkable because only a few days before I had received a letter from Wackerle in California with whom I had been in communication.... ...the attention of the insurance people was attracted to me, and I was sent to California to bring Wackerle back. He [Wackerle]was found and identified.... It was a difficult matter to bring about a meeting between Wackerle and his wife, but it was finally accomplished at Chaska, their old home, in the presence of a dozen or more witnesses. It was a dramatic scene. When they stood face to face, Wackerle said: 'Wilburga, don't you know me.' Her face betrayed not the slightest emotion, and yet beneath the calm, passive exterior, it seemed that she was shaken with contending emotions. Whatever her feelings may have been she did not betray them. ...She said: 'I do not know you. If there is anything between us the courts will settle it.' with this she turned and walked away and would say nothing more. ...the Louisiana supreme court...remanded it for trial and Mrs. Wackerle lost. In a case against the Mutual Insurance company, however, tried a few years ago at St. Louis, she was victorious, depite the fact that Wackerle, supported by a dozen more witnesses, testified to his identity. In the case at St. Louis the evidence was so plain that the attorneys for the Mutual company did not submit all the facts in their possession. Sympathy had been worked up for Mrs. Wackerle, however, and the jury returned a verdict in her favor, contrary to the evidence and the law."

Dr. William J. Wackerle & Susan F. Anderson - Morgan County, Illinois

I'm currently researching Dr. William J. Wackerle, born in Emmendingen, in Baden-Wurtemburg, Germany February 23, 1819.
He started for America in the fall of 1839, taking passage at Havre on a sailing vessel and landing in New Orleans after an ocean voyage of sixty-three days. He spent one year in Jackson, La., engaged in the practice of his profession, then, coming north, settled in Detroit, Mich.; less than a year thereafter returned south to St. Louis, Mo., and thence, in 1846, came to Morgan County, Illinois.

He married a Miss Susan F. Anderson in 1843 in St. Louis, Missouri. They raised their family in Morgan County, Illinois. Their children were: William F. Wackerle, born in 1849, Dr. Charles J. Wackerle, born in 1855, Louis J. Wackerle, born 16 October 1860, Fannie Ella Wackerle, born October 10, 1862, and Edward J. Wackerle, born in 1865.

I am fairly certain that Dr. William J. Wackerle was visiting and staying with relatives when in Jackson, Louisiana and Detroit, Michigan. I also think that the reason he settled in Morgan County, Illinois is because some of his relatives were already living there at the time.

I've seen numerous family trees with probable descendants and/or extended family members for the Wackerle family in Lousiana, Michigan and Illinois, yet I have not found a family tree linking them all together, either. Thus the reason for this message post, hoping perhaps someone will see a connection in the information above.

I'd love to correspond with anyone having information on - or common interests - within the Wackerle family.

Thanks !
Nice to know the stones might still be there. This is in Section 33 of Perry Township, on the old Matthews farm?

Rolland's genealogy included a picture of John Matthews' stone. Since the genealogy was just distributed by photocopying, I can see the outline of the stone, but I cannot read the writing (which he reproduced in the text and which includes a 4-line poem, in addition to the information that was mentioned earlier). In the photograph, the stone appears to be flat on the ground - hence, likely to get buried by debris, as you said. Rolland says "The photograph shown here was taken in June 1968 for use in the 6 volume set of cemetery records of Pike County". However, he does NOT say where the photograph came from. Apparently, the 6-volume set is available from the Pike Co. Historical Society. Maybe someone from that society would know whether the set includes photos, or whether the Society itself has an archive of 1968-era photos of all the old stones in the county.

I believe you source is mistaken about the site having been 'obliterated.' I met with the man whose family has owned the land for years... He said his grandfather often talked about the graves and so he knows they are there. They are on the side of a mountain - NOT farmed! However, he's not been there in years and years so thought they may have fallen over and been buried by debris.
I was there in the middle of a busy farming season so he could not take the time to 'escort' me to the site, but gave directions, as best he could, from a spot on the road where the hike in would be shortest. I just ran out of time before it started getting dark. I do think they are still there -somewhere. I would be VERY interested in a photo of the stones.

Thank you. I believe that the 1880 history mentioned may be the source of Rolland's list.

His genealogy includes a photograph, taken in 1968 as part of a 6-volume set of cemetery records of Pike County, of the headstone you mention. When he wrote in 1987 he said, "Since 1968 the small cemetery has been obliterated to permit the site to be farmed and the headstones may have been destroyed." I don't know the source of this information. Maybe he tried to find the site too.

In any event, it seems likely that your ancestor's stone must also have been photographed in 1968.

The children listed in Rolland Kaser's genealogy agree with that found in the 1880 History of Pike County: "Capt. B. L. Matthews, the son of John B. and Margaret (Leach) Matthews, was born Dec. 15, 1806, in Rouen (sic) county, N.C. His father was a native of Rockingham county, Va., his mother of North Carolina. She was a daughter of Benj. Leach, who was of Welsh descent. Her ancestors emigrated to North Carolina long before the Revolution, in which they took an active part on the side of the Colonies. Their direct paternity also took part in the war of 1812. The father of John B. Matthews was a native of the county of Tyrone, Ireland, and came to NC in a very early day, where he died. John B. Matthews was among the very earliest settlers in Pike county, having located here in 1825. Crossing Phillips' ferry over the Illinois river, he settled on land in Flint tp., where he engaged in farming. When he arrived many remnants of once powerful Indian tribes yet remained on their favorite hunting-ground. He said that 500 Indians seen in one gang was not an uncommon sight. They brought with them a family of 6 children: Benj. L., who was born in N.C.; Alvira and John, born in Ky., James, Nancy and Robert, born in White County, Ill., where the elder Matthews emigrated about 1818; two more children, Austin and Albert were born to them in this county. All of these are living except John and James. After one year's residence in Flint tp., Mr. M moved to sec. 12, Griggsville tp., where he resided for several years; then to New Salem tp., where he lived two or three years; and then to Perry tp. His wife, Margaret (Leach) Matthews, died on sec. 32, Perry tp., in 1851 or '52. John B. went to Missouri in 1856 and resided with his daughter, Mrs. Alvira Tucker, where he died in 1857."
I assume you know that his son John (your ancestor) was buried on the Bradshaw Farm near Perry, Pike Co., IL? At least I am pretty sure it is he because the only others noted as buried there are Ruth Bradbury Wadsworth (my ancestor) and her infant, as well as two of her grandchildren (children of Cephas & Lucy Bradbury Simmons). Benjamin L. Matthews (brother of John) was in business with Cephas Simmons.
The stone reads: "Sacred to the Memory of John Matthews" and shows that he died 29 Jun 1849 at age 35-4-19. I tried to find this graveyard a couple of years ago, but after walking through a cornfield (with owner's permission) and then thigh-high grass... about a mile in... I couldn't find it.

That's apparently my family. Rolland Kaser's genealogy lists a number of other sons for John B., including John, James, Austin and Albert. Plus daughters Clarissa, Nancy, and Alvira. My line is through John, who died young, via John's daughter Alice Adelaide Matthews. Family history says that Alice may've lived for a while with her cousins, the Asa Carrington Matthews family you mentioned.

Rolland felt that John B. Matthews was likely a son of Robert Jr. Has a Matthews descendant of John B. Matthews had a DNA test? I believe that some other Matthews lines descending from Robert Sr. have been tested. It would be nice to confirm Rolland's conjecture - unless someone has already done it by conventional means.

I am a professional genealogist who works often with land records. Judith "relinquishing her dower" when the deed was recorded does not mean she owned the land before her husband did. The relinquishment was something most married men who owned land and wanted to sell it had to aquire; it has to do with a widow's rights to a certain amount of her husband's land if he died.

I agree with the earlier reply that the Judith you found in the census in 1830 was probably the older woman in the household and possibly your Judith's name sake.

I would suggest checking probates in Morgan of the Hunter's you believe might be her parents, to see if she is named as an heir. Same with deeds--check deeds with administrators of Hunter estates as the grantors. A deed may list all the children of the deceased.

I think you are on-track with the name Coladon. It is unusual enough that there is probably a strong family connection between James Coladon Barber and the Coladon Hunter you found. Remember that there may have been more than one, for instance a son named Coladon Hunter and a father or grandfather with the same name. It may be that Coladon was the maiden name of one of the women in the family a ways back.

Good luck!
Early Morgan Co. IL land grants included those to Elizabeth Hunter 1825; Colladon Hunter 1830; Edward Hunter 1830; and Francis Hunter 1839, so these persons are some possibilities for connections to your Judith Hunter who married Pleasant Barber. Re the 1830 Morgan Co. census --Judith Hunter, listed as head of household, would likely be the 60-70 year old woman in that household and not the younger Judith whom you seek. She might, however, have had a daughter or granddaughter with the same name living in or near her household. (Be aware that some parts of 1830 Morgan Co. IL were called Scott Co. in 1840 and Greene Co. IL by the 1850 census.)

Research Advice Please?

My brickwalls are my g-g-g grandparents, Pleasant Barber and Judith Hunter.

I know them to have been married in Morgan County, Illinois on 3 April 1832. Judith was 33 years old, and I believe that she may have been married once before. Pleasant Barber was about 30 at the time of their marriage.

The 1830 census for Morgan County shows Judith Hunter as a head of household, with 1 male 30-40 years, 1 male 40-50 years, 2 female 20-30 years, and 1 female 60-70 years. Might be my gran...dunno for sure tho.

I have a land deed that states that Pleasant Barber y. wife sold land to Robert Vanbebber on 4 June 1838 on Greene County. At the end of the land description, are their "marks", and then an addition stating that the JP questioned Judith aside and apart from her husband and to make a long sentence shorter, agreed to relinquish all "right to dower".
My questions would be these:
Does that last part mean that the land was originally Judith's, used as a dowry? If so, is there a way to find out who owned the land before she did?

I'm trying to find the parents of Judith, (and Pleasant too). She was born in Kentucky, and I believe had a male relative named "Coladon Hunter", possibly a brother? My reasoning for this is that there is a Coladon Hunter living with his son, Edward Hunter in Morgan County in the 1850 census. Judith and Pleasant named their first born son "James Coladon Barber".

Am I way off track here? I feel pretty confused as to where to look next for information on this couple...Does anyone have advice for me as to where I can look next to try to find clues as to their parent's identities?

Do you have any more information about Edward Howard Everett? I have an Edward Howard Everett who was born about 1849 - 1852 in Winchester, Scott County, Illinois (based on obituary information) in the genealogy that I am working on. He married Harriet Sheppard in Morgan county in 1879 and had a daughter Zaluma/Zalumayra in 1880. The family was living on a farm next to Harriet's parents in 1880. Harriet died in 1883 and is buried in Morgan county. Edward H. never remarried. He eventually moved to Pueblo, Colorado, and then to Westcliffe, Custer, Colorado where he died at the home of his daughter, Zaluma Everett Walker, in June of 1933.

What county were they found in for WW1 dfraft card and census? Does her age state of birth in 1920 census match those for Effie Row and her parents? If all match it is probrably her. IF they are foud in 1930 census it would give age of first marriage

Where was their first child born? That could help narrow the scope of your search. In 1820 Morgan County was part of Madison County. If you go to the cyberdrive website mentioned in another posting, you can check the land patents. You might be able to find the "husband" as a patentee or maybe the father of the bride. If the land was located in what was called Madison Co., it will be listed by the name of the present day county. For example, a farm in Scott Co. could have been "in" Madison, Greene, and Morgan before being "in" Scott Co. Look for the family of the bride, since few young women were here alone during that time period. Also, check the other Morgan County Illinois message board on ancestry.com. Let me know if your Richardson had family (born KY) near Franklin, IL. Many of the Richardsons living west of Jacksonville are from England. Hope this helps.
Thanks for checking this database for me. I had also checked the marriage database at the IL State Archives http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/archives/marri... and failed to find this marriage --- but that's not to say it does not exist as an Illinois marriage. I think the key may be to find out where the bride was living in 1820, but I don't have enough information to determine this which is why I posted my original posting. Thanks again for your time and willingness to help me, and good luck with your research! Jeanne

According to two researchers that posted this information many years ago, James Mayes Rutledge married Sarah nee Richardson Smith (a widow)in Morgan Co. on September 2, 1820. I'd like very much to verify my g-g-g-g-grandparents' marriage.

This is a few years before Morgan Co. was created January 31, 1823 from parts of Greene and Sangamon Counties. The Morgan Co. Clerk's Office does not have marriages prior to 1827 according to an online source.

Where would I find a copy of this marriage record? Help greatly appreciated.

J. Johnson

I had searched all of the U. S. passenger lists for many years for my great-grandmother, Elenor Quiglely (18 June 1831, Donegal, Ireland - 10 Oct 1889, Linden, Texas) and only a couple of years ago did I find her thru Ancestry. com as a passenger on the “Prudence of Londonderry” sailing from the port if Londonderry, Ireland to St. John, New Brunswick, Canada on 23 May 1838, with her sister, Ann, and her brother, William. On 14 July 1838, when they arrived in St. John, Elenor was 7 years old, Ann was 22 years old and William was 17 years old. By 1856, Elenor was in Jacksonville, Morgan Co., Illinois where she was married on 21 May 1856 to my great-grandfather, John Frederick Kesling (Johann Frederich Kiessling/Kießling), John Frederick Kesling (Johann Frederich Kiessling/Kießling) was born 24 July 1832 in Quellenreuth, Bavaria and died 15 Oct 1892 in Linden, Texas. Prior to 1880, the Keslings were in Cass Co., Texas with all of their children with the exception of Thomas and spelling their last name Kasling.

The following are the children of Elenor and John Frederick Kasling/Kesling (Johann Fredrich Kiessling/Kießling):

Edward Stephen Kasling (28 Aug 1857, Morgan Co., Illinois - 2 July 1941, Linden, Cass Co., Texas). He married Nancy Caroline (Jeffie) Givens 13 May 1885 in Linden, Texas. Edward Stephen and Nancy Caroline Givens Kasling were my grandparents.

Mary A. (Mollie) Kasling (ca 1860, Morgan Co., Illinois). She married George Wesson ca 1879. 6 children, but no known descendants.

Thomas Kesling (ca 1862, Morgan Co., Illinois). No known descendants.

Isabelle (Belle) Kasling (ca 1866, Morgan Co., Illinois). Married Will Graham. No known descendants.

Maggie Kasling (ca 1867, Morgan Co., Illinois). Married Andrew Jackson Nelson ca 1890. Only child was Andrew J. Nelson (no descendants)

Elner M. (Ella) Kasling (ca 1871, Morgan Co., Illinois). Married William G (Bud) Kirkland. 10 children, but no known descendants except for Cindy Blair.

Would appreciate any additional information about the descendants of John Frederick Kasling/Kesling and Elener Quigley Kasling/Kesling and any information about the descendants of Ann Quigley and William Quigley.

I am not sure why you posted on this forum, but I did do a check to see what I could find. All I found was two census reports for 1920 and 1930. In 1920 Rose and Peter Carson were living in Loami Illinois with three children...Elizabeth who was 8, John who was 4 and William who was 1 year old. It states that Rose's father was born in Kansas and her mother in Illinois. Hope this helps a little.

According to my research John B Matthews of Pike Co., IL was born in Rockingham Co., VA abt 1780. He had two sons Benjamin Leech Matthews and Robert Matthews. Benjamin L was the father of Asa C Matthews who became the first comptroller of the United States. John B was indeed in Hopkinsville, KY during the 1820 census and was in Pike Co., IL by 1830. He continued to reside in Pike Co., IL until 1850 per the US Federal Census. I believe that John B Matthews name was John Benjmain Matthews but have no hard evedence to that effect. I have been unable to make a connection to this line and the lines who were in Morgan Co., IL during the 1830 Census.

Are these Matthews families connected to John B. (Black?) Matthews who was in Pike Co., IL in 1830? He came to the area of Pike County ca 1825 (via Christian Co., KY and White Co., IL) from Rowan Co., NC where a son was born in 1806.

John B. Black (b ca 1776 VA) died 1857 in Schuyler Co., MO where he had gone to live with a daughter, Alvira, who had married Leven Tucker.

Mathews / Matthews families from 1830 Morgan County

There were 15 Matthews families listed in the Illinois State Census Collection, 1825-1865; specifically the 1830 Morgan Co census. I have attached a jpg image of my transcription to make it easy for those interested. I can Identify a few of them and their relationships. I am sure that most are probably related to some extent. Benjamin on page 29 is a match to my 4th gr grandfather, his brother John is on page 27 and is a match as well. It should be noted that all members of these families had a double t in the spelling of their last name. It appears that the elders of the clan are Andrew on page 35 (between 50-60 yrs) Mary on page 11 (between 50-60 yrs) & Rich'd on page 22 (between 50-60 yrs). No 40-50 yr old head of house appear and there are numerous 30-40 yr old head of house listed. Richard on page 22 has been well documented as the father of the following persons (Richard jr.page 28, Samuel T. page 3, & Cyrus Matthews who doesn't appear. If you have any information on the other lines not listed, please assist in figuring out how they fit together.

Looking for Richard & Hugh Henry

Both were residing in Montgomery Co but can't find where they are buried. Hugh may have died Sept 2, 1949 and his brother Richard may have died May 5, 1950. Both were sons of John Calvin Henry and Elsie Stella Sheppard Henry of Jacksonville, IL, Morgan County. There are a few Henry's buried in Montgomery Co, in Ashbury Cemetery but I don't think they are mine. Can anyone help who has access to burial records in these counties? Thanks so much for any assistance.
