Elmwood Cemetery Lookup - Litchfield, Montgomery, Illinois

I'm hoping to find someone willing to do a cemetery lookup in Elmwood Cemetery. I am trying to find Maurice Glenn Ritchie, born 11 Oct 1900. I know his wife Florence M. Keplinger Ritche was buried there around 12 Oct 1985. Any help would be appreciated. I haven't been able to find any death information other than to confirm that he did pass away prior to his wife (via her obituary). A digital photo would be great, but even just jotting down what is on their headstones would be a big help.

Thanks
Aimee

Baff family - Scottish roots

Hi,
I'm hoping someone out there can help (fingers crossed), if only to point me in the right direction.
I'm looking for descendants of two members of my family.
1. George Baff (aged 25), his wife Mary and baby daughter moved from Scotland, UK to the US in 1853, moving to Illinois in 1854.
2. William Baff, his cousin, born 1847, moved to the US in the late 1860's, married Nancy Mariah Pomeroy from Illinois and they moved to Rock Island.
They had four children George (who remained unmarried) Mary (married Peter Marx had two children, Roy and Grace), Thomas (married Clara and had 2 children Floyd and Zelah - Floyd later married Mary producing Joyce and Archie), and William (married Florence and they had two daughters, one I believe called Genevieve)
I've tracked William through Ancestry and the census material which details his Scots heritage, but I've had no luck with George b. 1828.
Our family still lives in Scotland and it would be great to reconnect with our lost family branch.
I've left messages on Ancestry for members of public trees, and on the Rock Island message board hoping for some clues, but with no replies.
It's difficult to get a hold of contact info for modern day "Baffs" who may be connected, from this side of the world, even with the internet....
Help.......please!
Any hints gratefully received.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.
Cheers,

June Black (nee Baff)

5-year census--NS Bastion

My gg grandfather was Nicholas Schermerhorn Bastion, usually known as NS Bastion, once showing up in a US census as US Bastion, and sometimes as Bastian. He lived in various IL counties after 1830. His dates were 1808-1884, and after sometime in the 1860s he lived in Moultrie Co. He died in Adams Co, though his home was Moultrie Co. at the time of his death. I'm missing several US census years for him, so would love to have the 5-year IL census figures. He was an itinerant preacher most of his life, which may be why I can't find him. I know that once I know where he was when, I can ask some kind soul to look for the image on Ancestry. But where do I look for the index?

And if anybody can find him in US census data in IL in 1830 (when I think he was in an IL county near St. Louis MO), 1840, 1860, and 1880 (I know he was in Moultrie Co. in 1880 but can't find him), that would be wonderful too.

Thanks, Doris Waggoner

I see the surname "Mensch" in the
listing. Was this for Anna Mensch?
Need help or guidance to locate a prisoner convicted of murder. I have sketchy info: born Kenneth Young Daughtry abt 1939, served in the air force and was stationed in Oxnard, CA. Convicted of murder in Illinois and served in Joliet. As the story goes, he died of a heart attack the day he before he was to be released. He was 41 (about 1980). ANY information or guidance you can provide is appreciated. Searching for confirmation that he is indeed deceased.

Uncle Larry???

I've been searching for you on and off for several years now. I'd really like to know that song you sang to me as a baby. My oldest Gillie is too old for it now, but our youngest Frankie is just the right age - 14 months.

I've often wondered what became of you, Karen, Mathew and Curtis. My only family now are my wife, children and my wife's family (all in Norway.) It's lonely, and the kids have no extended family - no big family camping trips or special family dinners....

We live in New Mexico now - Alamogordo. Have for just over a year now. Before that we were in Norway since 2002.

If you ever feel like dropping an email, my address is my last name at gmail.com. I'd really love to hear from you. A visit would be awesome. We have a guest room and lack for nothing. Nearly 8 acres and sunsets that are astounding.

Miss you and really hope to hear from you....

Gil

James Cox (son to Fred Cox said his father (Fred was 8 or 9 when his dad (Walter Cox)left. That would make it 1893 or 1894. So that means he was with Nancy to have all the children.
Lizzie Cox died as an infant.
Ida May was sent to live with the Ferguson family in Wayne Co., Iowa. In the 1880 Census, she would have been around 9 years old.
Henry Cox was living in Unionville, Putnam, Missouri in 1930. He had no children. He had a wife because I have a picture of him and her. I don't know who she is. It is thought that he was bgorn earlier, before 1870. If that is the case then maybe he was old enough to take care of himself when Walter ran away.
Leroy Cox was listed as living with his mother Nancy when she was working in the Duble household in the 1880 Iowa State Census. His daughter Ida May Cox Dieken in
South Dakota told me over the phone that Walter only had 4 children before he left, and that possibly Leroy found out where his father went and followed him when he was older. Sarah Cox was listed in the 1880 Iowa State Census as living with her mkother Nancy when Nancy was working in the Duble household. It is also noted that Sarah's third husband was Albert Harrison Huntley, married in 1904, who also married her younger sister Minnie Cox in 1914. Mary Delilah Cox, Joanna Jane Cox, Walter and Wallace Cox (twins), and Frederick Cox, (my grandfather), Minnie Cox, and Herman Cox is not mentioned in connectiuon with Walter. information I received from Deloris Castor, (granddaughter).

This is just a suggestion -- not a solution. Given that the people you mention have very distinct names (Glen Woodmansee, Chester Dickhut, Beatrice Dickhut, etc.) I would try to find their obituaries. It is likely that June is mentioned in them -- with her married name, if married.

is she at list of Ellisisland?
for 1921 there is stated a Margaret Gruber from "Birik", Slovakia. think there is a misspelling of the town-name and also is not correct slavic but sounds similar to your Bereg....she was 27 and and married and with her came also a Margaret age 1. both to find at list for M. Gruber at Nr.30 and 31.
http://www.ellisislandrecords.org/search/matchMore.asp?FNM=M...
also a 3rd person is stated, but not easy to find in the long Gruber-list, as on the ship-manifest is no first- and lastname stated. they went to brother Sebastian Gruber, 4500 Indiana Ave. in Chicago. as Margaret, line 4 (baby line 6) is married and not to see who is the first at line 4 think this person must be a brother -in-law of her.
my guess would be, that this child must be the person you are looking for, or not?
so my question is if you are sure about Jugoslavia? no idea if anything would fit i found and not sure if Bereg now in hungary is meant. but think the persons must be yours.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bereg_County
Bereg is one of the oldest counties of the Hungary. In 1920 the Treaty of Trianon assigned most of the territory to Czechoslovakia. The southwestern part remained in Hungary (county Szatmár-Ugocsa-Bereg).

i just see that there is a big mistake at the passengerrecord - it states ethnicy jugoslavian, slovak.
a slovak is never and was never a jugoslavian. Jugoslavia is far away from the area! so if this persons your ancestors, so they were slovaks not "jugoslavians". :o)
little Margareta was 7 months old when she arrived at May 07, 1921 in N.Y. on ship "France" coming from the habour Le Havre in France. so must have been born nearly Oct.1920.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yugoslavia
http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/europe/fm_yugoslavia_pol96.jp...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slovakia
http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/images/europe/slovakia.jpg

Update - - According to 1915 IA State Census Collection, William was living in a county home in 1915. I haven't found him in 1920 so I'm guessing he died between 1915-1920. Nancy Coffman Cox only had 2 children (Roy & Sarah) living with her when she was working for the Duble family in 1880. Where was her oldest (Ida) who would have been about 10 yrs old at the time? Living with relatives? If Walter ran off and Nancy was forced to go to work in 1880, she must have been still seeing Walter as her last child was born in 1891. Was Nancy living with the Duble family all those 11 yrs? Nancy and William married about 1894 (1900 census says they were married 6 years). By 1910 they are living apart. Also in the 1915 Iowa special census - Nancy states she is divorced and William says he is widowed. I'll keep everyone posted as to my findings. Please keep in touch - together we may solve this mystery!
Sincerely, Susan

Would help us help you.
When I started in genealogy over 20years ago, I read several genealogy guide books through my library. Most suggested start with yourself and work backwards through birth certificates, marriage licenses and death certificates, at the same time check census and church records, biographies and civil records(probate, estate and guardianship records in IL start in mid 1830's and precede death records by at least 40 years). Probate/estate and guardianship records in IL are held by the Clerk of the Circuit Court at county courthouse. There maybe a genealogy or historical society that can help with these.
I tried to do that with an original post and I got an error/warning from ancestry that I couldn't post what I had, so I took out a lot of that stuff, since I really was just needing some help on where to start looking for more information. I don't know why it would let me post that stuff but it sure wouldn't let me.

Thanks for the great ideas. I have not checked probate/estate or guardianships yet, I will check in IL for that, as well as the 1850 mortality census if it is available for Adams and Brown county IL. I don't know what the morman pilot website is, but will look for it.

Thanks again. I am so new at this, that I was just trying the standard routes of church records and ancestry with no luck.

Hi,

I'm hoping to get in touch with the descendants of John Winter Thompson, who died in St. Charles, Ill, in the spring of 1951. Below is his obituary found in the Oberlin Alumni Magazine. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

John W. Thompson, organist and teacher of piano, theory, and organ, died at his home in St. Charles, Illinois, March 8, 1951. Mr. Thompson graduated from Oberlin [College in 1890] with a diploma of music which was replaced with a Bachelor of Music degree in 1906. In 1894 he was graduated from the Leipzig Conservatory. He was a teacher of piano, theory, and organ at Knox College Conservatory from 1890 until his retirement as professor emeritus in 1938. In addition to his teaching schedule, Mr. Thompson was organist at the Central Congregational Church in Galesburg, Illinois, from 1890 until 1926. He also served as president of the Illinois State Music Teachers Association for a number of years. After his retirement, he and his wife made their home in St. Charles. Survivors are his wife and two daughters: Edith and Mrs. Glen Seibel (Helen ’23).
The Oberlin Alumni Magazine, May 1951, p. 27.

Have you checked 1850 mortality census in the county where you know your ancestor ended up in? Have you tried working backwards from known FAY locations, church records, biographies, probate, estate and guardianships, etc? 1850 mortality census for Marshall County,IL lists a John FAY age 40 died of consumption(TB)b. Ireland and married. (I looked at this on mormon pilot website) That entry can be matched to actual 1850 census entry..which I didn't do...there's a column on mortality which gives regualr census page.
It appears that my great great grandfather John Fay along with his four young children and possibly his wife arrived in New Orleans (alive) in late spring 1847. From oral family history I know that my gg grandfather and his sister were orphans, and raised by separate families, though in close proximity to one another in Illinois.

How do I find out what happened to the rest of the family members that came over here? Where should I start looking?
I do not find the husband, wife or two other children in any death records in Ancestry.com or in IL or LA records. The passenger list does show they made to New Orleans alive.

I would appreciate any suggestions/research ideas that can be provided.

Best Regards,
Susan

Hi thank you I have all of that and the Fayeshaney site has no mention of these two brothers. With any of the Hensons But I have traced them all the way from Indiana to Civil war to Illinois then Piedmont MO. In every census from 1850 to 1880.

William Coff Henson was born 1816 In Indiana married Ellen Brown buried in Henson Cemetery Orchardville IL. My William C was around them in Illinois but no mention of him fathered by Phillip they may have been cousins to his kids.
All the Hensons are in the 1820 census and 1830 census I must have lost one because I count the sons and ages and they are not there. Some trees have my William C mixed up With William C born in GA married Mary Hood wrong Henson line but they have attached him with Father Joseph and Mother Nancy Clark.(wrong) One hint William C Henson named one son Carrol William. So I think the C stood for Carrol. Thank You

10-22-2009

You can do your own research. Order the death certificate for any one of these people OR contact the county courthouse probate court for any of these people and the probate file will show names and addresses of heirs/beneficiaries and the death certificate will also show name of the person who reported the death (who is usually also a closely related family member).

keith345@hotmail.com
GENEALOGICAL RESEARCHER
