Hi Christy.

Holly and I are cousins (3rd) so the Hill's are in both of our trees. Holly comes down through Robert Delmont Taylor (b. 1875). I come through Charles Yardley Taylor (b. 1877).

They had an older sister named Ella (b. 1866). Aunt El pretty much became Mom to those guys as their parents died when they were very young. Dad (Robert Yardley Taylor, b. 1843) died from wounds incurred from being struck by lightning in 1878 (Grandpa Charlie was 1) and their mother (Dora Mills Taylor, b. 1847) died of tuberculosis in 1878 (Grandpa Charlie was 10). Aunt El married Hans Hill and being the oldest of the 5 children, became Mom.

Harold E. Hill was one of the children born to Aunt El and Uncle Hans. So, Harold is 1st cousin 2X removed to both Holly and me.

Thank you. I do have their marriage record. I am researching the Webb side of the family. I'm searching for firm documentation that William Webb and Rebecca Sechler were Mary Harriett Webb McCreedy's parents. I am feeling more confident that is the case. I have the McCreedy Family History written by Joan McCreedy Watkins which I discovered today reports this information as being confirmed by a family member. I was near Corning for a funeral the first of this month, but didn't know at that time I would be searching for the parent's names. I would presume that Mary H. McCreedy's death certificate hopefully on file at the Clerk of Court's office would document her parent's names. Just wondering if someone in Corning might go to the courthouse and check for me.

John McCreedy is listed in my file as a distant relative on my McPherren side. More than likely, both John McCreedy and Mary lived in Mercer County, IL before coming to Adams County, IA. My records had Mary as born Dec 20, 1836 in Muncy, Lycoming Co., PA and died Jan 21, 1913 in Brooks. I don't have any parents listed for her, although I do have a father for John - Thomas McCreedy. I have 2 of their children in my records - Willard Thomas McCreedy born 9-14-1872 and Elizabeth. I have quite a bit more on Willard.

Roger Cox rgcox2 (at) gmail (dot) com

Can someone please help break down a brick wall? We need to learn who the parents are for Mary Webb McCreedy. Attached is a copy of her obituary. She died Jan 21, 1913 at Brooks. The names of William Webb and Rebecca Seichler have been suggested, but no documentation is given. Is there anyone willing to go up to the courthouse in Corning to look at the death records to see if their names might have been recorded?

Aaron Ben Mitchell & Jessie Mae (Thomas) Mitchell

I'm trying to locate headstone or grave marker pictures and plot information for Aaron Ben Mitchell and his wife, Jessie Mae (Thomas) Mitchell. Jessie's obit said she was laid to rest in Prairie Rose Cemetery. My grandmother said her father, Aaron Ben Mitchell is laid to rest there as well. I managed to locate his obituary, but the print is so old and blurred that most of the information has disappeared. The obit appeared in the Adams County Free Press, Nov 9, 1950 issue, page 4, under A.B. Mitchell. If anyone has a legible copy of this I'd really like to obtain a copy. The grave for Aaron should say b. 1882, died 1950. Jessie's should say b. 1885 d. 1947. One might find Aaron's grave marker or headstone name reads A.B. Mitchell, Aaron B. Mitchell, Aaron Mitchell or even his middle name which he went by regularly, Ben Mitchell. Too, I'm also looking for their infant daughters grave marker or headstone. It would read either Baby Mitchell or Frances Mitchell, b./d. Sept. 1912. I've created a Find A Grave memorial for both Aaron and Jessie, requested a photo but also wanted to check here. Oh, and they resided in Brooks, Jasper townships. Thanks in advance. :)

Hello,
I have learned that all 3 Benham children were on an Orphan Train to Plainview, Pierce Co., Nebraska arriving Oct 8, 1909. These were John V. Benham, Jeanette Benham, and Archibald B. Benham. They were placed with different families that night but none of them remained with those families. Archibald did remain in Plainview, Nebraska not Plainview, Long Island, as originally thought. I do think Jeanette was in Iowa in 1915 but don't know where she was living or with whom. It would be nice to find out. All I have is an index card with her name on it in 1915. I have been told that all the children moved about into many different states as they grew up.Also that Jeanette married a taxi driver in Detroit at some point. So hard to trace people who moved so much.
thanks for any help
Thanks Kathie, for this information. I am not sure if John and Jeanette were on the Orphan Train or not. Their brother Archibald apparently was not. He was adopted and went to Plainview on Long Island.

He is the possessor of a half section of land in Montgomery county. He deeded this to his son and daughter and then took a trip to Missouri and wrote his prospective bride that he had heard some news about her and that he didn’t want to marry her and that he was not coming back any more, so she consulted a lawyer and filed a suit to set aside the deeds.

Adams County Free Press
15 October 1902 page 5
Breach of Promise Suit.
The first, suit in district court for .a mages for breach of promise to marry hat has ever been brought in this county
was tiled last Monday, and is to be tried at the December term of court. Mrs. Eleanor Young, of Corning, sues
Joseph Monosmith, lately a resident of Douglas township, this county, for 5,000 damages for breach of promise
of marriage and asks that deeds made by Monosmith to his children to land in Douglas township since the promise
of marriage was made be adjudged as with out consideration and made with intent to defraud and that the land be
attached and sold to pay damages prayed for and costs of suit. Her attorneys are W. O. Mitchell of Corning and J. M, Junkin of Red Oak.
Mr. Monosmith was formerly for a number of years a resident of Corning. In 1898 he was elected on the republican ticket as a member of the county board of Adams county, resigning in 1901 and moving to Douglas township, this county, where he owned land and where a son resides. Last spring he returned to Corning, went to DeKalb county, Mo., and bought a large farm and later went to Villisca where it is understood he bought residence property.
He was a soldier in the Union army and is about 70 years of age. Mrs. Young is a widow of Cornelius Young, of Corning, and is in the neighborhood of 50 years of age. She is a respected resident of Corning. The attachment
bond for $15,000 filed by her attorneys, signed by her as principal, has as sureties nine Corning business
men.
Ora E. Weber, Albert W. Monosmith and Leigh C. Monosmith, children of Joseph Monosmith, to whom he recently deeded property, are made codefendants in the suit, with the declared purpose of getting attachment on the land deeded them by their father so that the same may be sold to pay judgment and costs in event of judgment
being obtained. Mrs. Young's petition of suit sets forth that in July, 1902, she entered into a parol (word of mouth)
contract with Joseph Monosmith wherein it was mutually agreed that they would marry and August 28,1902, was
agreed upon as the day for their marriage, that their engagement to marry was made public by Mr. Monosmith
and invitations were issued to friends to be present at the wedding, that she was ready and willing- to perform
her part of agreement and had made all necessary preparations to that end at expenditure of time and money
in preparing for the wedding, and that Mr. Monosmith did not appear to perform his part of the agreement but
without cause or excuse breached the agreement, informed her in writing on the day set for the wedding that he
would not marry her, and by reason of said breach of promise by him she was subjected to great sorrow, shame and mortification as well as to loss of time and money in preparation for the wedding. The petition of suit also sets forth that Mr. Monosmith at the time of the agreement to marry was made agreed with Mrs. Young that in consideration of the engagement and promise to marry he would give to her property or money to the amount of $3000 and all their household goods and one-third of all money accumulated by them after marriage, such agreement being in parol (word of mouth) and part of the agreement to marry. The petition sets forth that by reason of the failure of Mr. Monosmith to perform his agreement Mrs. Young is damaged in. the sum of $5000, no part of which has been paid.
The land title to which, as the petition of suit alleges, were made by Mr. Monosmith to his children after the
agreement to marry was made and on which judgment is asked includes the south half of the northwest quarter of
section IS, the north half of the northwest Quarter of section 15, and the south half of northeast quarter of section
15, all in Douglas township, Montgomery county, Iowa, in all 240 acres, the tracts described being deeded to
Ora E. Webber, Albert W. Monosmith and Leigh C. Monosmith respectively in the order named.. In justification of the claim against this land it is set forth in the petition that Mr. Monosmith has permanently removed from the state and pay or secure the claim due to Young— Red Oak Sup.
Adams County Free Press
Wednesday, 08 October, 1902
Breach of Promise Suit—Two people well known to the readers of this paper have become involved in a breach of promise suit. The plaintiff is Mrs.
Eleanor Young of this city and the defendant is Joseph Monosmith, who removed from Corning a couple of years
ago to his farm in Montgomery county and who has traveled most of the time since the death of his wife soon after
the removal from this city. The suit has been begun in Montgomery county, where the defendant's property was located, and attachment proceedings have been begun against the property, which Mr. Monosmith recently conveyed to
his children. Mrs. Young asks for $5,000 damages. It is said that the affair had progressed so far that the
clergyman had been engaged to perform the ceremony, but Monosmith went on a trip to Missouri and wrote that he had heard some gossip about her and did not intend to marry her.
W. O. Mitchell is the plaintiffs attorney.

Hi Christy!

I LOVE the picture of your GGrandfather in the hot air balloon with one of my Great Uncle's! Such a neat picture! The connection comes in through his mother, Ella Florence Taylor. She was the sister to my Great Grandfather Robert Delmont Taylor. It was a cousin, Matt Vincent, that has collected much on this line & shared his findings with me when I started my tree in 2008 I think it was? Shoot me an email, I'd love to get more information from you! So glad you reached out to me! Matt Vincent's email is rb6banjo@gmail.com & mine is hyankovich1@gmail.com Thanks!
Holly

Hi Holly,

I noticed that you have Harold E. Hill on your family tree and was wondering your relationship to him. He was my great grandfather. My grandmother is Helen Hamrick (formerly Helen C Hill). We live in San Diego and I was just so shocked to see someone else had done so much research on him already. I am so grateful for you posting the pictures of him. I cannot wait to share your discoveries with my grandmother!

Thanks!

Christy

Eleanor Young Breach of Promise suit against James Monosmith

Eleanor Young, filed the first ever law suit in Adams county district court for breach of promise to marry, in the amount of $5000, against James Monosmith. According to an Adams County Free Press article from October 15, 1902, Eleanor was promised marriage and "property of money in the amount of $3000 and all their household goods and one-third of all money accumulated by them after marriage, such agreement being in parol (word of mouth) and a part of the agreement to marry", but was literally left standing at the altar with all of their friends and relations in attendance. Mr. Monosmith thoughtfully sent a note to the church telling Eleanor that he would not marry her. Eleanor's attorneys were W. O. Mitchell of Corning and J.M. Junkin of Red Oak. The trial was set for the December, 1902 term of court. I can't locate an ACFP article from December stating the outcome of the trial. I can only imagine that a $5000 breach of promise suit would have created quite a stir in Corning.

Can anyone look up or tell me the result of this law suit? I'm in Virginia, so a court house visit just isn't possible. Thanks!

I am researching my husband's Adams county roots, although my questions are more relevant to the county's history. I hope you can help.

His great great grandfather, Cornelius Young, was a runner for a hotel in Corning. He drove a mule team that ferried guests from the train to hotel. The article I located in the Adams County Free Press is difficult to read in places. Can you tell me the name of the hotel? It appears to be Shuman or Sherman? Is there a photo available?

I have a question about the first Methodist church in Adams county. From the Adams County Free Press, May 20, 1903, "On March 10, 1854, James Query, John H. Smith, James. P. Campbell, with their wives, settled on section thirty-six. After erecting log cabins they sent in April for the Rev. John J. Anderson, who organized a Methodist class May 6, 1854. They called the place Methodist Grove, which name it still bears." James Campbell later became Rev. Campbell, and was another of my husband's great great grandfathers. I was simply wondering if anyone has a photo of the first church building.

Looking for obituary of Beatrice L. Kresher, Adams, Corning, Iowa

Please can someone help me find a person. I recently found that I had a half-sister I never knew about. Her married name was Beatrice L. Kreshner. Her maiden name was Beatrice Satterfied (Could also be Gravett). Beatrice's mother Zola Sanford and Price Satterfield married 1916 at Locust Grove, Mayes, OK. They divorced before Beatrice was born 26 Mar 1916 at Locust Grove. Zola remarried a person named Gravett. This Gravett family was at Murphy, Mayes, OK for the 1920 census and Beatrice was shown as a Gravett. Beatrice married Franklin Kreshner who died in 1984 at Glendale, AZ but was buried at Adams, Iowa. Beatrice died Nov 1994 at Adams, Corning, Iown. I have no idea if they had any children or other living relatives. I would appreciate it if someone could look up her obituary and provide me with her life details. Or, I would be most appreciative if someone would send me the name of a Adams township newspaper where I could make an inquiry for her obituary. I can be contacted direct at mgsatter@sbcglobal.net. Thank you. I hope someone can help me. Dr. Gene Satterfield
