William Mortimer French's parents were William Johnson French and Betsey Peet. His first wife was Phebe Hotchkiss. Phebe divorced William in New Haven CT 1851 for "extreme cruelty." William showed up about a year later in Freeport, Iowa and eventually married Susan Sumner Taylor. I have significant documentation regarding these people (including a copy of William & Phebe's divorce record).
