I have not done research in Iowa before and am not familiar with the division of records.

I beleive it is my g-g grandfather JOHN L.CARSON listed in the 1850 census index for Winneshiek Co. How would I go about looking for this census record? Can someone tell me if the census index for his name gives a town? Or,would I have to research every town in the township?
