I purchased an old photo of a woman in an antique store. On the back someone has written "Aunt Bertha Anderson Kloster circa 35 years old." The picture was taken by G. G. Oyloe in his studio in Ossian, Iowa. I found info online (not confirmed but cited as from the state historical society) that reports that Oyloe was a photographer in Ossian in the 1880's and 1890's. If you are related to Bertha, I would be happy to send the photo to you. If you have any hints on how I might find her family, please let me know. You can contact me via email. The email address begins with the phrase following "from" at the top of this message and continues with the words "@yahoo.com". I also will post this message on the Winneshiek County, IA board.
I am not related just trying to help you out I did find this obit:
Lime Springs Herald, Iowa, page 1, June 25, 1942
Funeral of John Nise, 82, Was Held Monday
Deceased Survived By Five Children
Jon Nise was born in Alfdorf, Wurttemberg, Germany, on October 17, 1859. His parents were Gottfried Nise and Catherine nee Shellhammer. Early in life he was brought onto the of Christ's church by holy Baptism and later, after having been duly instructed in the Scriptures, was confirmed in the Lutheran faith by Rev. Goeller.
As a child he received the usual training in the secular schools of the land, as well as later here in America at Luana, Iowa.
When he was about 20 years of age, he came ro America with four of his sisters. Here, as a young man, he was employed in various communitites of this state, such as Luana, McGregor, Postville and in Cherokee county. The 17th day of January, 1889, in Clayton county, marked an important event in his life, when he became a naturalized citizen of the United States of America.
Another milestone of life was reached, when on June 22, 1893, he was united in marriage with Caroline nee Krogman by Rev. J. Gass at Postville, Iowa. After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Nise settled north of Clermont, Iowa, where they lived and labored in the vacation of farming until 1914, whereupon they moved to Howard County, Iowa, and made their final home here on earth. God visably blessed this union with five sons and two daughters, of which all but two sons survive their father. These two sons died in infancy. Mrs. Nise also preceded her husband in death, having passed to her reward 16 years ago last March. Of Mr. Nise's brother and five sisters, only one sister, Mrs. Mary Carlson of Marquette, Iowa survives. It is not known whether a sister, who had been residing in Germany, is still among the living or not.
Many years back the deceased was afflicted with chronic rheumatism, which left him badly crippled and subject to frequent and severe attacks of pains. Due to this poor condition of health he made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Louise Hoopman for the past 13 years. As a loyal and faithful daughter, Mrs. Hoopman lovingly cared for her father in his declining years and did everything possible to amellorate and ease his pain. For the past 8 years, he has been an invalid. A year ago this spring, Mr. Nise had a severe setback, which threatened to extinguish his life, but he survived and for a time seemed much better. In april of this year, however, he became bedfast and on Friday morning, June 19, 1942, God called his servant out of this vale of suffering to His eternal reward.
Mr. Nise had been a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church. He was such even when his condition of health would not permit his attendence at church. He has been a member of this congregation since its inception and had often expressed the desire to be able to attend services and see the new church, but added that the only time that would become possible would be when they carry him in. He was always eagerly expecting and looking forward to his pastor's visits and joined in the services conducted for himm with a ready heart and mind. His was a simple, straightforward, childlike faith in Christ as his Lord and Savior.
He leaves to mourn his departure his children, Mrs. Louise Hoopman, Mr. Carl Nise, Mr. John Nise, Mr. Wm. Nise, and Mrs. Lenora Noblett, all of this community, also 6 grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews, one sister, Mrs. Mary Carlson of Marquette, Iowa, besides a host of acquzintances and friends.
The deceased attained an age of 82 years, 8 months and 2 days. May he rest in peace!
Funeral services were conducted from the Larson Funeral Home and at St. Paul's Lutheran Church on Monday, June 22, 1942, and interment was made at Pleasant Hill Cemetery at Lime Springs. His pastor, Rev. Paul C. Lutz, officiated. Mrs. H. Westby and Mrs. P. Lutz sang the anthems "Rest of the Weary", "The Lord My Shepherd Is" and "Let Me Go" during the service.
Pallbearers were T. G. Thomas, Herb Evans, Harry Walters, Ed Hanneman, John Sekora and R. C. Noblett.
the following relatives from a distance were at the funeral:
Geo. Wagner and daughter Kate, Mrs. Monroe Hinkes, Mrs. Ed Montour, Mrs. Wm. Johannameer of Monona, Iowa; Christian Nise of Farmersburg, Iowa; Mrs. Mary Carlson, Mr. and Mrs. Vern Prouty, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Siegle and son Harold of Marquette, Iowa; Miss Ann Wegner, Mrs. Gust Miller and Mrs. Wm. Everman of Postville, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Blumhagen and son Elmer, Mr. and Mrs. Emil Schultz.
Mr. and Mrs. Wm. King, Mrs. Ed Pruess, Mrs. Walter Schultz, Mrs. John Schroeder, and Mrs. Wm. Schane, all of Castalla, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Schultz, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Schultz, Carl Schultz, Louis Schultz, Harold Schultz, Mrs. Chas. Schuette of Luana, Ia.
CARD OF THANKS
We wish to express our sincer thanks to our neighbors and friends who so kindly aided us at the death of our beloved father, for the expressions of sympathy, for the beautiful floral offerings, to the singers, for the comforting words of the pastor and to the pallbearers, and to all who in any way assited in the funeral service.
Mr. and Mrs. Walter Hoopman
Mr. and Mrs. Carl Nise
John and Will Nise
Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy Noblett

Tim, according to the 1880 census you mention, William KAMPHAUS and wife Sophia were born c1820 in Prussia and Hanover, Germany, respectively. A George KAMPHAUS enumerated in the same township was born c1856 in Iowa; if William and Sophia were his parents, you should be able to find them in the 1860 and 1870 US Censuses, and possibly in the 1856 IA State Census, as well. It's important to search on variant spellings of the surname

I found William, Sophia and George enumerated in IA Winneshiek WashingtonTwp in 1870, indexed under the surname KEMPHENER.

You may already know that Wm and Sophia were enumerated as KAMPHAUS in 1885 and KAMHHAUS in 1895.

I see that you've already located the gravesite information from the WPA index online; since the exact death dates are provided there, I suggest you contact the county recorder's office and request lookups of William and Sophia's death certificates, plus any will or probate records that may be on file. These may provide additional ancestral information and/or birthplaces, and may reference any other children besides George. Also contact a library in the county seat, and inquire what newspaper might have carried an obituary for that area and time period.

Patricia,

If you're wanting a copy for genealogy purposes only, the cost is $5 and the notary is not necessary. Since you know the names and the date, it should be pretty straight forward. County offices generally have trouble when dates aren't known as they have very limited ability to do "research".

Let me know if there's anything else you need.

Gerry Ambroson

I am looking to receive a copy of a marriage record for Eldon W. Dutton and Harriet E. Fish. They married June 8, 1940 in Decorah, IA.

Also, any insight as to why this couple, who lived in Wisconsin, might have decided to go to Iowa to get married?

The graves of the majority of the Hardy Family can be viewed at this website:
http://iowagravestones.org/gs_view.php?id=473464

I have linked this site to Elizabeth's graves. I don't know if it is the same Elisabeth, but she is the daughter of Henry and Rebecca (My four times great grandparents). It says here she died May 8, 1963 at age 37. I hope this helps if it is your Elizabeth, as she is also noted as Elizabeth Henry Hardy (but difficult to read the Henry part of her name)

I've copied this and will talk to my historian soon(also will check at the historical society in the basement of the Library)to see if he ever heard this. Interesting!
My attempts to find out if Harvey Wolfenberger ever served in the military was the result of a project to get 4 military stones for 4 vets that did not have stones. One vet was buried in Decorah so that eliminated him. We got a stone for one civil war vet and one is on order for a WW1 vet (I hope I had all the info I needed to get it). It is difficult to get the info you need to prove military service especially from WW1 as the records are stored in St Louis and a fire occurred there in the 70's that destroyed alot of the records. My husband served from 57 to 63 and his records were lost. If you can ever find where and if Harvey (Mary Kelley's husband)served I would appreciate that information. We are pretty sure he's buried in Burr Oak Cemetery, but since we can't locate a stone we're not sure where. We have a block number in the old part, but of course, not always sure of exact location.

I found the marriage records for Harvey and Mary some years ago from Pike Co Ohio.
I had many relatives buried at Burr Oak and it was from one of their descendants the story about the cemetery came. They talked of finding half-buried stones, and stones in ditches, etc.

I've done a comprehensive study of the Emery family from 1635 and ties to the Bartlett family (Josiah Bartlett, second signer of the declaration of Independence.) George Reid Emery JR and brother Omri Emery (named after Dr Omri Willey) were sons of Dr George Reid Emery (named after General George Reid of Londonderry NH) whose parents, Cpt John Emery and Susannah Bartlett were cousins and first and second cousins of the signer. John and Susannah had two children in Londonderry before moving on. Cpt John Emery and General Reid both began in the Rev War as Minutemen.

Ormi and George Emery were brothers of Candace Emery of Stephenson Co Il whose daughter married Philip Wolfenberger and had a daughter Ella in Winnesheik co in 1883. (I presume she died young with her mother.) Candace named a son Omri Emery Daniels who lived in Hampton Iowa for a number of years with brother Henry Brown Daniels.

I don't know if you are still viewing this post, but I would be interested in sharing information if you are. I know that there are many Korsen/Corson/Carsen lines so I am curious if you have any in my line. I am a decendant of Nils J. Korsen - born August 18, 1950 (brother of Helmer Johnson and Ole Jacob) that all immigrated from Norway to the Winneshiek county, IA area in the late 1800s. (Nils came over in 1870 but Ole came prior.) Thank you.

Good day. I am new to ancestry.com and just ran across your post from 2001. I don't know if you still have this account, but I thought I would try. Apparently, we are somehow related. My great-grandfather was Nils Korsen (brother of Ole). I would be interested in sharing information with you (though you are probably way ahead of me) and would love to hear back from you if you see this post. My email is jgagliano@comcast.net. Thank you. Jennifer

I have never heard the story about the Burr Oak Cemetery being plowed up and stones restored later. I will check with my cemetery historian to see if that is documented anywhere in the records. I doubt it's true or documented anywhere, but I will research it. Thanks for your reply re Harvey Wolfenberger's military service. I have not been able to document that he ever served in the military. I think the information we had in our records may have referred to another person or one of his relatives. The birth date I have from his obituary Born March 6, 1811 Died February 10, 1894 in Burr Oak, Iowa. His wife Mary Kelley (married 1832) and 5 sons survived him.

He lived in Ohio prior to coming to Burr Oak. Not too old to have volunteered for Civil War.

Is it true many of the old stones were displaced when Burr Oak was plowed by a farmer and was later restored? Am I thinking of the right cem? Still looking for those daughters of Philip. (Other than Josephine.)

Of course, Philip's son Harvey served. I found a picture of him on gen website for Otoe Co NE.

Harvey Roy Wolfenberger
County: Otoe
State: Nebraska
Birthplace: Iowa;United States of America
Birth Date: 13 Oct 1894
Race: Caucasian (White)

Name: Harvey R Wolfenberger
Service Info.: PVT US ARMY WORLD WAR I
Birth Date: 13 Oct 1894
Death Date: 20 Jun 1964
Service Start Date: 8 Mar 1918
Interment Date: 25 Jun 1964
Cemetery: Ft.
I am Secretary/Manager of the Burr Oak Cemetery and I am trying to find information on Harvey Wolfenberger's (father of Phillip Henry Wolfenberger) military service. He is listed on our records as serving in Spanish American War. I think that is incorrect as he died in 1894 and the SA war didn't start until 1898. I can find no proof of any military service. Do you have any information regarding Harvey Wolfenberger's military service or if he served in the military at all?

William Mortimer French's parents were William Johnson French and Betsey Peet. His first wife was Phebe Hotchkiss. Phebe divorced William in New Haven CT 1851 for "extreme cruelty." William showed up about a year later in Freeport, Iowa and eventually married Susan Sumner Taylor. I have significant documentation regarding these people (including a copy of William & Phebe's divorce record). Much of the documentation is available on my public tree, "William Mortimer French Family Tree," to which I would be happy to send you an invitation. Or if you prefer, send me your contact information privately through Ancestry's Message system, I will email you copies of the records. /djm

Susan Taylor's maiden name was Sumner. Susan was the daughter of John Sumner & Eliza Frost.

Susan married John Taylor on 8 Jun 1861. John died in 1862.

Susan quickly married William M. French on 21 Oct 1862. They had one son (William M. French, Jr.).

Susan's widowed mother (Eliza Frost) married widower Alexander Kirkland on 19 Dec 1861. Kirkland and French were neighbors.

William M. French Jr. was raised by Susan's sister Fannie and husband Selden Woodard.

I don't have any other information regarding John Taylor but have extensive information about the Sumners and Frenches, and some information about the Kirklands. Feel free to contact me if you want information about these families.

I am eager for a clue or two regarding John Taylor if you can help there. Thank you.
