I am getting ready to start on an ANDERSON surname line and thought I would check to see if anyone had done any work on this line.

My great-grandmother was Lola Barton ANDERSON (Armstrong), according to her death certificate she was born in Henry County. I have since seen her born in Owen County as well.

Lola’s father was Richard ANDERSON, per his death certificate: born 30 January 1852 in Kentucky; died 3 November 1933 in Mercer Co., KY; His father was Richard ANDERSON born in VA; His mother was Lucretia URTON born in OH.

Lola’s mother was Frances STEWARD (Anderson), per her death certificate: born 21 January 1856 in Gallatin Co., KY; died 14 June 1948 in Mercer Co., KY; Her father was John STEWARD, location unknown; Her mother was Lucinda HENRY, location unknown.

According to the 1860 Census for Gallatin County in the location of Warsaw there was a household with Richard ANDERSON (50) and Lucretia (33), William H. (14), Anna Bell (11), Richard (7), Runkin W. (5) and Lydia (1).

According to 1870 Census for Carroll County in the location of Jordan there was a household with Richard ANDERSON (60), Lucretia (45), Richard (18), Bell (16), Franklin (14), Lidia (11), Lucinda (9), Catherine (7) and Elijah (3). Previous household was a William H. ANDERSON (24), Mary J. (22) and Firsh (sp?, female child).

According to the 1860 Census for Gallatin County in the location of Warsaw there was a household for a John M. STEWART (ending with ‘t’, not ‘d’), Lucinda (25), Elizabeth (14), James B. (9), Robert F. (7), Francis (3) and Edward (2).

If any of this interlinks with your ANDERSON research please let me know.

Paul Gregory
Lexington, Kentucky

I am researching John and Mary Brown (could I be looking for any more common name?) who lived in the Locust community of Carroll COunty. They married about 1851. Mary's maiden name was Owen. She had four children---the third is the one who is my great-grandmother, Martha Ann Brown, born 1859. John apparently was deceased between the 1870-1880 census. Any help would be appreciated.

Alva Jackson (1875-1938) has a death certificate indicating he was the son of Andrew Jackson and Mary Bishop. He is buried in the "Butts Cemetery" aka the Jackson Cemetery, located near Buffalo Road where Andrew Jackson appears on the 1883 map of Carroll and Gallatin Counties. Also buried in that cemetery is Andrew Jackson, born Oct 3 1852, died Jan 6 1893, Nannie (1880-1881), daughter of Andrew and Mary Jackson, and Alva's wife and son. Andrew's wife doesn't appear in these records. Perhaps her grave is unmarked or she remarried. Curtis (1873 - 1956) and John O. (1878-1930) appear in Worthville Cemetery records.

1883 map available here: http://tinyurl.com/5c4br5

Bill Davis
wmadavis@gmail.com

I am looking for the parents of Andrew Jackson (b abt 1850) who married Mary Elizabeth Bishop (b Aug 26, 1850). They lived in the Worthville precinct in 1880. Andrew and Mary had Carrie, Curtis, Alva, John, Nancy, Caddie (my grandmother) and Andrew Jay Jackson.
I have run into a brick wall with Andrew's parents. His parents were born in KY, but I found several Andrew Jackson's in the area (Carroll and Owen Counties) who were born about the same time. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Thanks for any help!

I’ve added a Kentucky In-Laws page to West Virginia Memories. http://wva.homestead.com/Kentucky-In-Laws.html The page has:

SNAPS -- Photos collected by Dorothy Carroll of Ashland, Ky. Dorothy was a daughter of George B. Carroll (19 Apr 1862, Carter County, Kentucky/03 Jul 1931, Ashland, Boyd County, Ky.) and his wife Nancy Jane Canterbury (17 Dec 1867, Gallia County, Ohio/02 Feb 1957). Name is also spelled Canterberry. Nancy’s siblings were: Tabitha Almeda Cales – Aunt Bythe, Missouri Clemintine Newland – Aunt Jorrie; Mary Liza (Van Fleet) – Aunt Mary; Sarah Lois Cales – Aunt Sarah; Lavina Dell Dooley – Aunt Dell; Ruth Euphema Leedy – Aunt Ruth; Maggie Belle Felts – Aunt Maggie; John Wesley Canterbury; and Andrew Philip Canterbury.

Sullivan Family of Kentucky - A handwritten record of the Sullivans back to Randolph Sullivan, probably written by Carra Sullivan Russell (1869-1949) of Ashland, Ky., around 1949. Mrs. Russell, wife of Harry H. Russell, was a daughter of William Parker Sullivan and wife Sarah Elizabeth Wright of Bracken County, Ky.

Kodak-Album -- Photos circa 1920s that were probably collected by Walter John "Stubby" Carroll, son of George B. and Nancy Carroll. I can identify Stubby and his wife Anna Dale Russell. But I don’t know who the other people are. The Carroll family was from Carter and Boyd counties in Kentucky.
My Great-Great Grandmother was a Jett from Lincoln County, KY. I have been researching all Jett's for a few years, especially the ones in Kentucky. I agree with you. Elizabeth Bradley is always shown on the Census' as being born in Delaware, or Maryland.
Seems to be some confusion between RHV Jett and Richard Cole Jett. I just saw a site that said Richard Cole Jett married Elizabeth Bradley. That is not true, he married a Susan Tollivar Miller and died in Hancock County.
Richard Cole Jett was the son of William D. Jett and Rachel Cole. RHV Jett was the son of William D. Jett and Charlotte Vowels, and he was the son of William D. Jett, who first married Rachel Cole, and then unknown. Unknown is the Mother of William D. Jett, that married Charlotte Vowels. Then the line goes up to Peter Jett and Rebecca Bowen, and on up to Peter Jett the immigrant.
Have you been to Carroll County, Kentucky? I was there last year, and I took some pictures. You can e-mail me direct at plcain@insightbb.com and I will send you a few.

Yes, Woodruff County is in Northeastern Arkansas, and Augusta is the county seat. Hasn't changed a whole lot since gggrandaddy's time....

I have seen references to William D Jett and Charlotte Vowles as emigrating to Kentucky from Fauquier County, Virginia - this is in agreement with biographies of Richard T Jett I have located. Not sure who exactly is William D's father as there are way more Jetts than you can shake a stick at in that era in that area of Virginia.

Aslo have seen that attribution of Elizabeth Bradley's parentage, but according to census records and other references, she was born either in Maryland or Delaware, and that doesn't quite fit.

Would love to talk with you more. What is your connection to the Jett family?

I thought it was much older, but the house was apparently built in 1846.

Joseph Bennett was born in 1800 in Braintree, England. He married first Martha Challis and they had three daughters. She died and he married Elizabeth Weare, and they had three more daughters. He relocated to America and settled at Cheviot, near Cincinnati, Ohio. He then purchased from Charles Bird (or Baird) a tract of land outside of Prestonville, where he operated a rock quarry. In 1840 he married a local schoolteacher, Barthinia Bishop, the widow of Rev. George Bishop. Bennett and his third wife had two daughters and a son, but the son died, and in 1846, Bennett built his stone house. The house is mentioned in a 1846 deed of Joseph Bennett to James Carr. The house was barely completed when on January 7th, 1847, Bennett died in his new stone house. He is buried in the churchyard of the Carrollton Methodist Church. His house and properties were heavily mortgaged, and his widow left with a large family, so she and the Bennett daughters sold the properties to Andrew Darling and moved to Carrollton to teach school. She afterwards moved on to teaching in Hanover, Indiana and Oxford, Ohio. I don't know if Darling got the house or if Carr got it, because of the 1846 mortgage.

In 1883 the house belonged to Henry Winslow. He sold it in 1899 to Judge Frank Sebree, and it was pictured in a 1900 issue of a Carrollton newspaper. Sebree sold it in 1908 to R. F. Turner; Turner sold it the next year to A J Dunn. I thought I had an old newspaper sketch and history of the house, probably done by Walter H. Kiser, but I couldn't find it. I think the house at that time was owned by another man named Winslow.

In 1931 C B Love sold the house to Ollie J. Cockerell, and that same year Nannie Corbin sold a piece of land to Berta Cockerell. In 1938 Berta Cockerell sold a piece of land to Creed Oney, and in 1943 Forest Henry also deeded a portion of land to Creed Oney. I'm not sure which deed would have included the house, but I'm told Creed Oney lived in the stone house for a long time. He died at 90 in 1975 and I'm told he was the last person to live there.

Bill Davis

Glad to hear from you. I do have some questions about the Jett's in Carroll County. For one thing. Who are the three Wm. H. Jetts that are buried in the Carrollton IOOF Cemetery? I was there in July and there are three stones near the big Jett stone. Wm. H. Jett born 1775, Wm H. Jett 1830-1842, and Wm. H. Jett 1845-1846. I have more questions but, I won't throw them all at you at once. Hope to hear from you soon.

My ancestor William Stewart (1795-1862) was born in Ireland 17 March 1795. He was in Shepherdstown, Virginia (now West Virginia), by the late summer of 1813 where he signed his "Intention" to become a citizen. In early 1814 he was in Mercer County, Kentucky where he received his naturalization decree. (I have a photocopy of it.) In 1840 that part of Mercer where he lived became Boyle County; he lived in Danville the county town of Boyle County. That he and his eventual wife, Dorcas Wilmot (1795-1861) of Lancaster, Garrard County, KY, were close friends of the Sneed family and were members of the same Methodist congregation. This may suggest that the Stewarts and Sneeds were from the same place in Ireland? My search of 30 years has failed to reveal William Stewart's place of birth in Ireland or his parents' names. Is it possoible that he came from Londonderry like the Sneeds?
I considered most variations on Yowell when I checked the records, the name does not appear in the record I had on hand to check under any variation. I only have a decade's worth of deeds. The name does not appear from 1799 to 1808. He must have acquired land afterwards. I don't have those records available to me at home to check.

In Henry County marriages I find the marriage of William Yowell to Rebecca Shields, daughter of Nancy Shields, on Mar 8, 1831, but I do not see the other marriage in Gallatin, Carroll, Henry, or Trimble County records. Nor in the Indiana marriage database.

There are no Yowells in the records of The Ghent Baptist Church, the oldest church in the area.

The only surviving newspaper from the 1830's that I know of was across the river in Vevay, Indiana. There was a school site that had put a lot of that online, but what it had was very limited -- mostly legal matters and advertisements. You might be able to find it online still, but it'd be a lot to go through on very slim chance that news would've crossed the river.

You might also look at yearly tax records, which can help indicate when someone moved into an area, and when they died or moved on.

Bill Davis
wmadavis@gmail.com

William,

The deed and estate problem♦ could be related to the spelling of the Yowell surname. I've seen it spelled as Yowell, Yowl, Youell, and Uhl; the variations apparently were due to pronunciation differences and the name experience of the census taker.

Cornelius Yowell can be found in both the 1820 and 1830 Gallatin County KY census microfilm. In the 1820 census his surname is listed as Yowl; suggesting how he (or his family) pronounced the name. That entry is on page 123 of the 1820 census. On the 1830 Gallatin County census his name is correct, and is on page 171 of that census.

His son William married twice; the first to Rebecca Shields in 1831, and the second to Eliza Truitt about 1838. Both women were from Henry County KY so the marriages could be recorded there.

I'm trying to get a death date for William's wife Rebecca and a marriage date for his union with Eliza. Were there any newspapers in the Gallatin, Carroll, or Henry County area during the 1830s?

Dick♠ ♠
There are some birth and death vital statistic for carroll county from the 1850"s. Ancestry.com has them. Perhaps your library has Ancestry access. There are no Yowell marriages in Carroll under any spelling. Nor are there any Yowell marriages in Gallatin County, the county Carroll was created from in 1838. There are not Yowell's mentioned in Gallatin Estates to 1838, and no Yowell's mentioned in Gallatin Deeds 1799 to 1808.

Do you have a death date for Rebecca (Shields) Yowell?

Do you know when and where William Yowell married Eliza Truitt?. I have found a post stating that they married in IL and that their children were born in Louisville. However, they are not listed in the early IL marriages. Also, since William remained in KY past the 1850 census, and Eliza was born in KY I doubt that they would have gone there just to get married. Also, William is still listed as living in Carrol County in the 1840 and 1850 cemsus.

Is there a Carroll County genealogy center (or group) that might have access to BMD records for the 1835 to 1855 time period?

Dick

FYI, Cornelius, Clara Ann, and several of their younger children appear in the 1860 census for Montgomery County IL.

Their are a number of Yowells (some spelled Youell) buried in a cemetery near Hillsboro; Clara Ann (name on headstone says Claraman) is among them. There is no grave listed there for Old Cornelius.

Dick
If you look at this map of Carroll County KY:

http://ukcc.uky.edu/maps/ghm1999/carroll.gif

Four miles east of Carrollton along the Ohio River is where Four Mile Road meets U.S. 42. About a mile and a half south of that intersection along Four Mile Road there is a creek that comes from the east and runs into Four Mile Creek. On the map the creek barely touches the "e" in "Four Mile Cr."

That is Yowell's Branch.

Bill Davis
wmadavis@gmail.com

I am searching for information on Moses's descendants.

I gather that Moses dropped the "d" from the end of his name. Is that correct?
