Double Spring Church around 1800

I am trying to locate where in KY my ancestor was before coming to Indiana.

I am of the opinion that John and William Quillen and brother to Jesse Quillen, sons of William and Caterene Quillen, may well have gone to Monroe County, KY. Records show that Teague, first cousin to John and William went to Letcher County, KY. I came across the Hilton Clan website. I emailed the woman who had the site, but she did not have any source and the people who had supplied her with the info she is now out of contact with.

Here is what it said.

Rev. Samuel was the first preacher in this section of the western settlements. He and Rev. Jesse Wilson traveled widely by horseback to minister to the scattered families settling along the Wilderness Trail. In 1803 the two preachers and 11 others from Washington and Russell Counties helped organize the Double Spring Church of Tennessee (near the Tennessee Eastman Plant in Kingsport). Two years of attendence at such a distance probably convinced them of the need for a church in the Moccasin Creek area. On October 26, 1803 the "United Baptist Church of Christ at Big Moccasin Gap" was founded. It was the first church established in Scott County. The 13 members "loaned" from the Tennessee church were Rev. Samuel and Nancy Hilton, Rev. James Wilson, Samuel Strong, Margaret Davidson, WIlliam Quillen, Ann Black, Rebecca McClellan, Priscilla Jeffries, Teague Quillen, Polly and Samuel Eastep and Polly Wilshire. The next day 4 more joined the church. By 1812 there were over 50 members. Among the new members for that year were William and Sarah Cody, grandparents of "Buffalo Bill" Cody.

You can see why I am interested. Samuel Strong is mentioned along with my William and Teague who were brothers. I can tie them into the Russell/Scott Counties, VA area. I can find no mention of them in Letcher Co., KY even though it was Floyd at that time. The Teague who is readily referred to in KY is the first cousin.

Russell Co., VA records tell that around 1811-12 John and William left VA. They did not appear in IN until the 1820 Census having bought land in Lawrence Co., IN. I still have to secure a copy of the land grant, but it is supposed to say 1815.

If you can shed any light on these folks or have any suggestions or ideas, I would be extremely greatful. Thank you.

Paula G. Herron
Hi Lian,

Hope this gets to you. Emily Anderson wife of William Bud Anderson and mother of Josphine Anderson was the daughter of Thomas Jefferson and Caroline[Barnes] of Elliottsville. Thomas was the son of James Anderson and unknown 1st wife. This James Anderson was of the Kettle/Sulpher Creek area and not the James C. Anderson married to Johnnie Freelove Cozzart.

Early researchers put Thomas Jeff Anderson as the son of James C and Johnnie [Cozzart] but this has been shown to be in error. Joyce Stover showed that Thomas jeff Anderson was son of James Anderson of Sulpher Creek. I was able to find birth records of some of his children, Wilson and Jesse which cleary states they were born in the Sulpher Creek area and the land grant to James Anderson in 1848 for 106 acreas of land on Sulpher Creek.

So my findings together with the Analysis of Joyce Stover clearly shows that many, many folks related to Thomas Jefferson and Caroline Anderson line have the incorrect Patirach. It is clearly not James C. Anderson h/o Johnnie Cozzart, but instead James Anderson b Tennessee and of the Kettle /Sulpher creek area of Cumberland.

I have detailed information if you are interested

Best Regards

Cousin Ed
eanderson@carolinar.rr.com

I understand, Judy.

For years I had accepted earlier researcher's conclusion that James C Anderson (h/o Johnnie Freelove Cozzart)was my ancestral Anderson patriarch until Joyce's analysis showed it could not be. Then birth and land grant records I found confirmed her analysis. So anybody can made claims, but without evidence to support them - they, well remain questionable and even with same data the interpretation can be different.

I believe I have solid evidence for my hypothesis on the family, but one is always skating on thin ice when trying to resolve complex family relationships based on sparse data over 100 years old.

I exchange notes and data with Joyce on almost a weekly basis on the Anderson clans in Cumberland. She has certainly laid the foundataion and together we seemed to be making progress on sorting it out a bit further. Between what Joyce has provided and what I have found (assuming it all stands the test of further research) we now have at least 14 of James Anderson 16 children by his three wives at least two generations removed (down to James Grandchildren) and much further on some lines.

Mudcamp, Leslie and Marrowbone to name a few were concentrations of Anderson north of the Cumberland river. The Cumberland runs (meanders) sort of Northeast to Southwest throught the county of Cumberland. The only county I am aware of that the river splits. Ellington, Kettle, Sulpher creek areas lie south of the river. Yes, you can go east or west along the river as it twists and turns but if traveling by land, you are always on either the North side or the South side.

After my last e mail exchange with you, I have found some data and records indicates that there was indeed intermarriage between (at least) the Mudcamp and Ellington Andersons in the late 1800's. I will be forwarding my findings to Joyce to see what she makes of them.

Certainly not trying to get you to change your family tree, just providing my findings and data so that others can evaluate it and make their own determination whether they believe it affects their family tree - or not.

Take care and stay tuned

Best Regards

Ed Anderson
eanderson@carolina.rr.com

All that I know is what has been told to me by Joyce, and I do take anything that she says about Cumberland County as Bible. My husband was born and raised in Cumberland County. All around Leslie,Marbone and although he was never there, that he recalls,Mudd Camp. He was born in WaterView. Now,being a city and yankie girl,I do not understand the terms, north and south of the river. The river meanders all throughout the county, with many turns and bends,in fact acording to the river being north or south of it,where our summer home would be is both north and south of it,depending on which part of the river, one is referring to!
Anyway,I am content with my version of the Anderson family lines, until Joyce's research or my own tells me differently.
Judy

Robert Preston Anderson so George W so of Samuel Joseph so James Anderson (b. 1797 TN). My great Grandfather was James Anderson of the Sulpher Creek area (Kettle district) of Cumberland County, Ky

I have quite a bit of data on this part of the family if interested contact me at
eanderson@carolina.rr.com

I am curious about the marriage of "Nancy who married George Wooten" mentioned in your message.

Did this marriage occur in Cumberland County? Do you have any more information about George? When was the marriage?

I've been trying to follow the travels of my GGGGrandfather, John Wooten, who was in Burksville Cumberland County permanently by about 1810. He had done some minor land acquisition matters in Cumberland County as early as 1798, but I do not know where he was living then. There was also a Moses Wooten there for the 1810 census. I don't know that the two were related, but suspect as much. Any information you can provide will be appreciated.

Thank you.

W.P. Wooten

This is for JoAnn and Maxine,

I think some of the Odles may have been buried in the Barnes Cemetery in Burksville, Cumberland, KY, considering Helen Barnes married Milton Odle, who was the cousin of Jack Odle, who married Helen's sister, P. Branch Barnes. Now, I know P. Branch is buried in the Barnes cemetery, i found a record of the cemetery from another researcher, and she bought the cemetery book at:http://www.burkesville.com/pharmacy/ Look under "Genealogy" in the top right corner.

Here is the cemetery on FindAGrave.com, I loaded what I had:
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=cr&GScid=2...;

I hope that helps you, I wish I could go to the cemetery and look through it myself, but like JoAnn, I live in Oregon, in Astoria...

-Kara Barnes

Coop's Store in Sulpher Creek Cumberland Co. Kentucky

The preimpoundment maps of Dale Hollow Lake show the area of Sulpher Creek before it was covered by waters of the lake in 1942. About mid way up the main channel of Sulpher creek, a branch turns to the west (it retains the Sulpher Creek name). This is approx 1/2 miles south of Mikes Marina. At that location is a notation on the Corps of Engineers map referring to COOP's Store. It is approx 1 mile east of Peytonbsburg where the post office was.

The store was run by George W Coop who reportedly started it after returning from the Civil war. I am trying to find out the earliest date anyone has of the stores existance. George's occupation is always listed as "Farmer" until the 1910 census when it is listed as "Merchant - General Store". So the store was certainly there in 1910 - but how much earlier?

Would appreciate any information you have.

Thanks and Happy New year

Ed Anderson
eanderson@carolina.rr.com

Check out this site from Doug Moore if you have not already done so. I see that Rutha is listed on the 1850 census also. I do not recall her name but I will check my records. I am also happy to try to find that graveyard in Clay Co, TN also where she is buried. I live in Atlanta but run up to Ky on a pretty regular basis.
Maxine Wright
http://worldconnect.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op...

Re: ANDERSON Family Researchers

Thanks for your response. Certainly is fun trying to sort out hunder year old family connection mystries when so many people have the same names {:>).

I have had several recent discussions with Joyce about the Anderson clans in Cumberland. The latest one being when I visited Cumberland Co, Ky this September and a couple of emails since.

In fact, I also had originally thought that James c. Anderson and Johnnie Freelove were indeed my ancestors.

Then Joyce conducted her analysis and clearly showed that he could not be. Well, that was a bit of a shock and I must admit I was somewhat reluctant to accept her findings. So taking the Tax sale document of the one James Anderson and all the names Joyce mentioned on it, I searched for a way to determine which James Anderson the indivduals refer to in the document belonged to.

One of the individuals in the document was Mary A [Thrasher] Anderson, who was my great grandmother and my grandfather, Edward Anderson and his two sisters, Paty and Betsy are also listed. My great grandmother was the third (and last) wife of this James Anderson.

It is very clear there were two James Anderson one who was granted land on Sulpher creek in 1848 and one who was granted land on Illwill and Bear creek (this was James C Anderson and Johnnie Freelove). So the question was which one did the folks in the Tax sale document belong to? The document itself does not mentione where the land was located in Cumberland so it could have been anywhere. If on/near Illwill creek then the James Anderson of the document would likly be James C. Anderson of Clinton Co. If on/near Sulpher Creek then that would tend to rule out James C. Anderson and point to the James Anderson of Cumberland County. So where was the land???

Well, I was lucky and after a lot of searching found the birth records of children of two of the individuals mentioned in the tax sale document, Wilson and Jesse Anderson, both sons of this James Anderson. What was unusually is this birth record documented the birth place of the parents very specifically as the "Head Waters of Sulpher Creek". Most of the time the birth records simply list Cumberland Co, but this one was different. All of the children and parents listed on this one page document had their birth places within Cumberland county mentioned.

The data in the birth record showing two individuals in the TAx document clearly having been born on Sulpher Creek clearly removed James C. Anderson (now Clinton County) from contention as he did not have nor no record of him every having land on Sulpher creek.

My father was raised on the homestead of the Sulpher Creek James Anderson by his grandmother and told stores of walking to Coops store (now under Dale Hollow Lake)a quarter mile away from his grandmother's house.

I got the survey of the land grant from Frankfurt, Ky and plotted our the survey data and precisely located the homestead (now also under the waters of Dale Hollow Lake) about a mile south of Mike's Sulpher Creek Marina.

I naturally shared all of this with Joyce Stover and so far as I know we are in agreement about who the folks the the tax sale land document were children of. That of James Anderson of Sulpher Creek.

Also, I have seen no evidence presented to indicate a connection between the Andersons south of the Cumberland river and those North of it in Marrowbone, Mudcamp or Leslie. There certainly could be but I have not yet seen it. I would love to be able to tie the clans together, but just have not been able to find the evidence to support the connection.

There is no doubt that the common given names such as James, Wilson, William,John, Jesse, etc among all these clans existed and really made it hard to separate out one family from another. Even in James Anderson family of Sulpher Creek, there were at least 4 James Anderson, counting his sons and grandsons, at least 5 Johns - all in the same clan. So tought to separate them in one clan much less across clans.

I have since located descendents of Wilson Anderson (one of the sons of the James Anderson Sulpher Creek) still living in Cumberland County and they have confirmed where the homestead of Wilson Anderson was (about 2 miles up Sulpher Creek from the James Anderson land grant and just south of the Bows School House Cemetery. So this placed it in close proximity to the Sulpher Creek land grant of James Anderson.

Nancy Anderson was the second wife of Sulpher Creek James Anderson and not James C. Anderson. It turns out she was the Great Aunt of my grandmother Laura Bell Neighbors who ended up marrying one of James Anderson son, Edward Anderson (listed in the tax document). These two were my grandparents.

The census records 1850 show that the James C. Anderson had as wife - Johnnie Freelove Cozzart and that by the 1860 Clinton Co. Census James C. Anderson had apparently died (no longer in the house hold with Johnnie Freelove) but in the 1860 Cumberland census the James Anderson sulpher Creek is still listed and alive. So clearly two different men.

The 1850 Cumberland Census shows Mary A. Thrasher living next door to the Sulpher Creek James Anderson and you will find all of the names that Joyce feels were Nancy Neighbors children listed there in the census also (these were the ones also in the tax sale document). So again mitigating against it being James C. Anderson who is shown in the 1850 Clinton Census with Johnnie Freelove.

10 years later in 1861 with Mary Thrasher at the age of 29, she and James Anderson got married and had three children, my grandfather and two daughters.

James Anderson then died in 1867. Apparently, his widow (my great grandmother) could not afford to pay the taxes on the land and it was sold for taxes in 1873. She retained Dowagers rights to live in the house on the land until she died - but she had no legal title to either. My father (raised from 3 1/2 - 10 years of age by his grandmother told of this tax sale even though it occured years before he existed - probably heard it many times from his embittered grandmother.

I always wonder why the other people on listed in the tax document did not perhaps come to her financial rescue until I realized that none of James Children by his earlier wives were blood kin to Mary A Anderson. So her children would likely inherit the land and not any of them. So it would appear there was nothing in it for them to help out their Step-mother or perhaps they simply did not have the resources to spare either. Those years after the civil war were tough economic times in Cumberland County.

I know a lot of early researchers had many of the children of the James Anderson of Sulpher Creek incorrectly assigned to James C. Anderson of IllWill Creek area. Even Joyce in her book indicates that many researchers "believe" that - however, her analysis and my land grand analysis and the names listed in the Tax document made it clear that many of the conclusions of early researchers were in error.

But, those errors were perpetuated my myself and other who accepted that since their research was done closer in time to the time those folks lived, and that they must necessarily be accurate. But, it turns out that was not the case - at least in this pearticular case.

When you look at the census data it is very clear that James C. Anderson was from Va while the sulpher creek James Anderson was from Tennessee. So while I can understand the confusion (I was intially in error myself), there is no longer any doubt in my mind who were the children of Sulpher Creek James Anderson. The evidence is clearly there from multiple sources.

Now I know many will be reluctant to accept that (I know I was), but there is an abundance of evidence that when looked at reveals it to be so.

I can not speak for Joyce, but in our exchange of e mails since her analysis (which you cite) and my land grant analysis does not indicate any fundamental disagreement in our findings.

Since she used census data and family history and the Tax Sale document and I used the Tax document, birth records and land grant information to reach the same conclusion. I now feel very comfortable about the results.

I looked over the names of your line and believe that most (if not all) are the names of Andersons who lived north of the Cumberland River. As I mentioned earlier, I have never been able to find any evidence of kinship between the ones North and South of the Cumberland River.

At least not before the early 1900s - when both groups seem to come together with some from each side of the river moving into Burkesville proper. There indeed may have been some intermarriages between members North and South at that time. But, I find no evidence - specualtion yes, (done a bit of that myself)but no proof - yet {:>).

When I spoke to Joyce about her new edition in September my impression was that it really would not have much in it about the Anderson clan south of the Cumberland. I have offered my data and findings to Joyce for her consideration and use in any future editon.

However, in closing, I will certainly admit there is always the possiblity tomorrow will bring new data to show connections between all the Anderson clans in Cumberland. I certainly look forward to it because it great finding cousins (even distant ones) and the more the better.

Best Regards and thanks again. Yes, I have three grandsons and they bring a computer to its knees. So I understand. That is why they now have there own compter down in the garage {:>).

Its exchanges like this that makes it so exciting to me.

Have A Happy New Year

Ed Anderson (William J, Edward T. James Anderson)
