I am at a dead end and is hoping someone can help me. I am looking for my father's side of the family. My great grandfather name was William Marion Stevens born 15 Oct 1893 in Sarah, Elliott, Kentucky he died in Oct 1965 at the Va hospital in Dayton, Ohio. He married Della William and had one son. He also married Emma Jackson who he had several children with and was married to when he died. On his Social security card application it list his parents names as Carter Stevens and Thursey Johnson. My grandfather {who was born in Ashland, KY}told me that his fathers siblings names were Everett, Melody, and Pearl. There may be more I just don't remember and I am not sure if he even knows.I believe William's mother died and his father married someone named Alice? I think Carter's parents names were Andrew Stevens and Polly Ann Blevins.
My father did do the ancestry.com dna Y-33 but not has had any close matches. I am at a complete dead end. If any one has any information of any of Stevens line please email me.

His first marriage was to Elizabeth Ann McDaaniel, who divorced him in 1828. Then he married Lucy Penn Hannah. This is all new information to me today! Any more info you have on Samuel C.

David Crocket Whisman was first married to Nancy Clark and had several children by her- The last of which was Richard Dick Whisman (B1849) who was married to my great grandmother Martha Cornett (B1850?-51)in 1869. They are in the Elliott County Ky census in 1870 together. But after that Richard disappears and I'm not sure that he is my great grandfather. Martha appears in the 1880 census in her father's (John Samuel Cornett B 1803) home along with my grandfather (Enoch Cornett B 1878) said to be Samuel's grandson.

There is a 1873 court record that the sheriff paid $3.85 to bury R. Whisman in Estill County but I'm not sure if this was Richard. Can't find any burial records for this.

Nina,

Since your query was posted over 5 years ago, most likely you have already found all the information you were seeking. But for the benefit of others who may find this query in a search, I'm going to reply with what I have on this family.

First off, according to my info, George Crum's father was not named William, but Henry. (Perhaps his full name was William Henry Crum, but I have no evidence of that. He is just called Henry in all the records I've seen.) His mother was Sarah Moore, daughter of Obediah Moore. George did have a brother named William, though.

Henry Crum and Sarah Moore were married on 9 Mar 1845 in Floyd Co., Ky, but were in Morgan Co. by the 1850 census. They had the following children:

1. Dolly, born about 1846, married Wiley J. Brown.
2. Mary Elizabeth, born about 1848, married Daniel B. Nickell, son of Fowler Nickell and Nancy Jane Brown
3. John, born about 1851, married Martha Almira Jones, dau of Isaac Newton Jones and Nancy Jane McDaniel
4. George W., born about 1854, married Sarah Elizabeth Johnson, dau of Lemuel Johnson and Carmella (or Camillia) Mahala Porter
5. Nancy Jane (known as Jane), married John Elliott Johnson, brother to Sarah
6. William, married Amanda S. Steagall, dau of Cornelius Steagall and Julaney Lucas

Lemuel Johnson and Carmella Mahala Porter were both born in Virginia, and married there. They had the following children:

1. William P., born 28 Oct 1853 in Virginia, died 11 Feb 1919 in Elliott Co., married Mary Goodman
2. John Elliott, born 11 Aug 1856 in Johnson Co., Ky, died 13 Aug 1939 in Elliott Co., married Nancy Jane Crum (above)
3. Sarah Elizabeth, born 4 July 1858 in Floyd Co., Ky, died 7 Jan 1929 in Elliott Co., married George W. Crum (above)
4. Lemuel Washington (known as Wash), born 1 Dec 1859 in Floyd Co., Ky, married Mary Elizabeth McCarty
5. Frances, born about 1861 in Carter Co., Ky. I do not know who she married.

I am not related to these Crum or Johnson families, except through some distant collateral ties. E.g., Bee Crum, son of George and Sarah, married Osie Carter, dau of Breckenridge Carter and Allie Reynolds, and Breck's mother Martha Ellen Clark was my GGGG Aunt. Another link is Tennessee Johnson, dau of Lem Johnson and Mary McCarty, married Mitchell Black, son of Leander [Clark] Black and Lizzie Pettit, and Lizzie Pettit was my GG Aunt and Leander Black (born a Clark but raised as a Black) was my GGG Uncle. There are about a half dozen other marriages of my cousins of some remove to descendants of these two families.

If anyone is interested, I can send a report that includes census readings, death certificates, marriage records, etc., but this post is already getting very long.

There is an Old Fairview Cemetery near the Carter/Elliott county line. A lot of our older Porter family members are buried there.
I am attaching a map and a 1981 list of tombstones in the cemetery. A few others have been buried there since 1981.

Paris was also killed in Elliott Co. near Wallow Hole near Rogers store, it think somewhere around 1896. I have come to a dead end on Roseanne Adkins Gilliam, not sure what her parents names are if she had any brothers or sister. Or how she died. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
gwenna.patrick@morgan.kyschools.us

CLAY

STINSON CLAY born about 1914 died 6-4-1988 in Rowan Co

I notice that in the CLAY CEMETERY listing that there are no dates for either JOHN L. or HILIE and it does show her name as HOLLY. However, if you go to the CARTER COUNTY WEB PAGE and click on cemeteries and then click on the second choice for the CLAY cemetery, someone has taken photos of all the graves. There is one for a BELLE CLAY which I would speculate would be your HILA BELLE. You have to look closely for the one for JAMES and another which I believe is the one for JOHN. They are both homemade in concrete,

In an effort to determine the parents of JOHN CLAY I came across a family in the 1880 census of Carter County as follows:
125 CLAY, HENRY 36
MARY JANE 34 (Her maiden name was CHAFINS)
DENNIS F. 13
AMANDA M. 11
HANER E.(female) 9
WM.
Me Too!
I have info on him being in Elliott Co, KY (1880 census)
So my best guess is he died in the Sandy Hook, New Foundland area of the county. Probably buried on the family farm, so if you can find out where that was, that would be a good start.

Ryan

GWEN I am not a family member but I did a brief search on line and discovered that several other individuals had contributed family trees that indicate that WILLIAM PARRISH GILLIAM born in October 1877 in Elliott Co died AFTER 1920.
ROSANNA ADKINS born 8-24-1878 in Elliott Co daughter of RUFUS ADKINS born Oct 1847 in Morgan Co KY and ELIZABETH BREWER born May 1855. ROSANNA died 9-10-1924 in Scioto Co OHIO and was buried n the Gilliam Cemetery, Elliott Co KY
There appears to be a list of children born to PARRISH and ROSANNA for the period 1898 - 1924.
This same source indicates that he was the son of OWEN GILLIAM born 1851 and died 8-27-1946 and JALEY(JAILEY) E. BRICKEY born 7-29-1858 and died 11-112-1925.
Is this information correct?
I can send a list of their children..perhaps their names might clear the picture ......????????

The Bays website can be found at Karen's heritage. Once you open this link go to surnames. Find Bays, then it will give you first names and dates and family tree. The Bays I've found is my 3rd great grandfather John "Jack" Bays born 1787 in Washington Co. Va. and died 10 Sept.1867 in Pleasant Valley,Carter Co. Ky. He married Jane Porter "Jennie" Kilgore. His father was William Bays, Sr. born between 1760-62 in Halifax Co. Va. I hope this helps!
