I am trying to find a death date or death record for Electus Oakes. He lived for some years in St. Francis (Aroostook County, Maine) and then lived in Sheridan (near Ashland), where, in 1899, he was arrested and tried for the murder of one of his sons. He died a few years later, but I don't have a date yet. Any help would be appreciated!

I currently don't have any birth or death records on hand for Electrius, or his children....
I did get this from provincial archives, this is my mother-in-law's g.grandfather, g.grandmother and uncle.
This Electus is Electrius's son.
Look into the archives for yourself, you may find something I couldn't. Good luck.

My grandaughter's 3 GGrandmother was Helen Oakes daughter of Joseph Oakes and Helene Bois ( Helen's husband was Georges Michaud) We think Joseph's father was Haron Oakes and his mother ? Lavigne... who is said to have native american ancestory....

Helen Oakes sister, Sarah married Thomas Collins also from Clair New Brunswick and they moved west to Alberta as well as Helen and Georges.

Do you know anything about any of these names?

Electus was my gggrandfather. He was b 3 Dec, 1821 in
Bathurst, N.B., Ca, and d in 1906 in Houlton, Me.

There is a book about his trial in the Maine State
Library system. Anything else you might want to know,
let me know. I have this database pretty well covered.

Hi Donna.

Joseph Oakes was the son (b 1830) of
ELECTRIUS Oakes & HENRIETTE LAVIGNE. There has long
been a legend that she was Indian. In fact, my father,
still alive at 95, used to tell us when we were kids
that we had an "Indian Princess" as a ggggrandmother.
However, she is 100% French Canadian, with a lot of
Acadian ancestors.

One of Joseph Oakes brothers, Electus Oakes, My
gggrandfather, married Angeline Caron/Correau. From
her own mouth came the following:

"I was born in Canada and came into the States when I was a little infant child about two years old; I was reared among Yankee folks."

She is PROBABLY the half-breed indian NOT her mother-in-law. . .
. most likely.

A gentleman at the University of Maine, Fort Kent,
name of Nicholas Hawes who is an Acadian expert, did a
lot of research on the subject of Indian ancestry for
the people of Oakes ancestry living in Connors, N.B.
I don't know the results, but the last I had heard was
that my statement about Henrette LAVIGNE is true.

Anthing different than the above I would love to hear.
It (my genealogical research) is a constant work in
progress and corrections happen all the time.

This is the info on the Oakes - Collins lines that I have, so far. My husband's cousin (all descended through Electrius Oakes' daughter, Barbe) and the Collins line intermarried in our generation here in Alberta: Paulette Girard m. Terry Collins in 1967. It's a small world!

FIRST GENERATION

1. Electrius "Lectus" Oakes was born between 1790 and 1792 in Exeter, Maine. He served in the military in 1812. He was a millwright between 1826 and 1832. He died on September 9, 1870 in St-Francois de Madawaska, New Brunswick. He was a farmer and trapper. He resided Oakes Farm, on the west side of Glazier Lake in Maine.

He was married to Marie Henriette Lavigne (daughter of Jean Baptiste Lavigne and Marie Modeste Hache) on August 17, 1818 in Bathurst, Gloucester County, New Brunswick. Marie Henriette Lavigne was born on April 24, 1799 in Bathurst, Gloucester County, New Brunswick. She was baptized on May 5, 1799. She died on September 25, 1888 in Victoria, British Columbia. She was buried on September 27, 1888 in Victoria, British Columbia. Electrius "Lectus" Oakes and Marie Henriette Lavigne had the following children:

She was married to François "Frank" Sirois (son of Marc Antoine Sirois dit DuPlessis and Julienne Daigle) on February 17, 1862 in Frenchville, Aroostook, Maine. François "Frank" Sirois was born about 1840. Abigail "Barbe" "Abbie" Oakes and François "Frank" Sirois had the following children:

She was married to Thomas Collins on July 8, 1883. Thomas Collins was born on October 9, 1859. He was a farmer, lumberjack, ferry operator between Clair and Fort Kent, Maine before 1910 in Clair, New Brunswick. He moved to about 1910 in Durlingville, Alberta. Sarah Oakes and Thomas Collins had the following children:

24 i. Daniel Collins was born on March 17, 1884.

25 ii. Nellie Collins was born on December 25, 1885 in Clair, New Brunswick. She died on October 24, 1949.

26 iii. Thomas Collins Jr was born on April 3, 1888 in Clair, New Brunswick. He died on December 8, 1959.

+27 iv. Joseph John James "James" Collins (born on January 4, 1892).

28 v. Georgiann "Mamie" Collins was born on February 14, 1895 in Clair, New Brunswick. She died on March 19, 1991.
