I have a printout of a paper delivered to the Mass Hist Soc in 1927, "Scotch Deported to New England, 1651-1652." App 150 POWs arrived in Boston on the ship, UNITY, and were to be "sold" to pay for their passage. Most were indentured to the Saugus Ironworks, but some were purchased to work in Richard Leader's sawmill in Kittery. The Scots settled in the NW section of Kittery, and named their parish Unity, after the ship. Later, that section of Kittery became Berwick, named for their Scotch hometown area. Richard Leader left the area in 1656 for the Barbados, and thus, the prisoners were deemed "freeman," and were offered land grants. Surnames listed as Berwick indentured servants are: Agnew, Barry, Cooper, Furbush, Ferguson, Grant, Gray, Gowen, Hamilton, Holme, Key, Maxwell, Neal, Ross, Taylor, Thompson, and Warren. One Grant escaped from Saugus and is recorded later in Berwick..a brother/cousin/?? to the Berwick Grant.

Hope this info helps. SueB.

Greetings! I live in Brunswick, and I'm just starting in to automate a 60+year old typed Bailey genealogy. This area is loaded with Bibbers (and Baileys), and I have vague memories of my great aunt talking about Bibbers. I need to do a little digging. Back to you soon. Sue

Hello Alan, thank you for emailing me. I contacted the Mayflower Society about the "White's" that you mentioned last year, and they told me it is not connected to a Mayflower White.

I do not have ancestry anymore. Some months I can afford it and some I can not. Thank goodness they allow free messaging.

I have read on line and have been told that Maine was a place where Scotland brought their prisoners. I also descend from the Dunham Line of NH, Maine and Mass, and Jonathan Dunham, the elder, fought in the Battle of Dunbar (Scotland) and was imprisoned and brought to Maine, where he first shows up in New Hampshire. Many Maine surnames are Irish and/or Scottish.

I believe that Jacob Bailey was married twice, my line comes down his wife, Ruth Jones.

So you descend from John Bailey? Can you tell me more about him, who he married, time line, etc? Maybe I am getting my line mixed up? could use the help.

Thank you for your kindness.

Darlene:

This is Alan in North Carolina. Saw Sue Bailey's post to you yesterday. I don't have any of these Baileys in my database. But, do you subscribe to Ancestry.com? I typed in Joel Bibber, with James as his dad and found two family trees right away that trace Joanna Bailey back through Jacob and Ruth Jones (one says Thanksful Jones), John Bailey and Abigail Clapp, and John Bailey and Sarah White.
One tree is the Fortin Family Tree. You could email the tree owner and perhaps get some info from him. It would be interesting to continue to trace those Baileys back to see where they go. They may go back to Richard whereas Sue and I descend from John.

Anyway, happy hunting. Info on ancestry is often questionable, but may at least give you a starting point.

Alan Mann
Sue, thank you for contacting me. I live in Rhode Island. I have many ancestors from Mass and Maine.

I have the book called "Jacob Johnson & his descendants East & West......." I found AND confirmed my 3x greats in Maine, who are JOEL CHANDLER BIBBER who married HANNAH BATES JOHNSON in Freeport, Cumberland County Maine on
16 NOV 1815. This is definitly proven.

Up this Bibber line, I am not sure, but I believe Joel's father was JAMES (Jr?) BIBBER who married I "think" JOANNA BAILEY, unsure if she is the daughter of JACOB BAILEY and RUTH JONES (?). I have no other information on my Bailey Line.

Do you live in Maine?

Please do write back. How nice of you to want to help me.
~Darlene
p.s. I will check out that cemetery link, thank you.

Greetings from Brunswick! Your message was brought to my attention today. I am a direct descendent of John Bailey, weaver from Chippenham, who emigrated in the Angel Gabriel with his young son, John, in 1635.

I have recently been in contact with a gentleman in S. Carolina who descends from the Baileys who settled in Portland in the 1720's, and I will find out if he has a Benjamin who was born in Portland.

I visited the private Bailey cemetery on Forest Ave in Portland ME yesterdayfor the first time. Information on Bailey burials in Portland are online: greaterportlandgraves.com

My Benjamin Bailey was a farmer born in Woolwich, ME, a son of John Bailey, Revolutionary War veteran.

Let me see if Alan might be able to help you.

Sue Bailey, Brunswick

LINWOOD 'BILL' LINDSAY CHEF, JACK-OF-ALL-TRADES, STORY-TELLER

Linwood "Bill" Lindsay, 90, a carpenter, fisherman, storyteller and a head chef at the old Westcustogo Inn, died Saturday at his home on Pit Road.

Mr. Lindsay was described as a "jack of all trades" by his daughter, Carol Jordan. He had worked as a clamdigger and lobsterman for many years in Casco Bay, and he also dug for worms, and fished for smelt and crabs.

He was a boat builder and had constructed everything from small punts to large lobster boats in the shop next to his longtime home at 55 East Main St. in Yarmouth.

As a self-employed carpenter, he specialized in small jobs and repairs.

"He'd do all odd jobs," said Jordan. "If somebody's door needed repairs, or chimneys, or even electrical and plumbing repairs."

Mr. Lindsay was a chef for many years at the old Westcustogo Inn in Yarmouth, a popular restaurant that specialized in shore dinners. It was there in 1931 that he met and married his wife, Aldine M.E. Daniels Lindsay.

During the late 1940s, Mr. Lindsay ran Bill's Place, a roadside food stand outside his home in Yarmouth. "People came from miles around to get his fried clams," said Jordan.

As a storyteller, Mr. Lindsay could go on for hours about interesting things that had happened to him. "When my dad told a story he held the floor," said Jordan. "If you interrupted him, he'd wait and then pick up right where he left off."

Mr. Lindsay was working as a cook at the Royal River Coffee Shop in Yarmouth Village when Eleanor Roosevelt came for lunch. He enjoyed telling how he made an exception and allowed her dog, Fala, to dine at the table with the first lady.

Mr. Lindsay spent much of the 1920s traveling and working all over the U.S. and Canada. Many of his stories were about his years as a cook at a logging camp, or when he worked in the wheat fields of Saskatchewan.

"He always started stories with 'When I was in the Canadian Northwest,'" said Jordan. "He also told a lot of fishing stories, such as how bad the weather was."

In 1964, Mr. Lindsay built his home here along the Crooked River. "He built it all alone," said Jordan. "With no help and no power tools. He built a huge fireplace out of stones from off the land. He built my sister's home in Bridgton when he was in his 80s."

He was born in East Dorset, Vt., a son of Joseph H. and Henrietta Maxiam Lindsay. He left East Dorset in 1908 with his family, who included two brothers and six sisters, and settled in Yarmouth. He attended Yarmouth schools.

He enjoyed Disney movies, re-runs of "All in the Family" and "CPO Sharkey," and dining out at Cole Farms in Gray.

Surviving are his wife of 63 years, of Naples; two daughters, Carol Jordan of Gray and Nancy E. Bjork of Naples; two sons, Gordon W. of Raymond and David M. of Chester, Conn.; 17 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter.

A graveside service will be held in the spring at Holy Cross Cemetery. Arrangements are by Lindquist Funeral Home, Yarmouth.

Portland Press Herald
Portland, Maine
March 1, 1995

I have just recently discovered that my great great grandfather Benjamin Bailey came from Maine. Was rumoured to have been born in Boston but my mother found his passport application (on Ancestry) stating born in Portland Maine.
The birth date I have from other sources is June 5, 1826 or 1827.
Do you have anyone in your family tree with this name??
Benjamin was a clerk working in Boston in 1849 when he left for the California gold fields.
I have no parents or siblings for Benajmin. My cousin had the DNA testing and it shows Benjamin is descended from William Bailey born Bromham, England 1535. Apparently his grandson and great grandson (both named John)came to Maine in 1635. Another great grandson Joel went to Pennsylvania.
I think that my Benjamin may be descended from the John Bailey line in Maine. I am just trying to piece together the lineage. I look forward to hearing from you.
Elizabeth, Nanaimo, BC

The Lamson Studio was in Portland, Maine. Joseph Harrison Lamson (the father) was a photographer who traveled all over the world taking pictures. He settled in Portland and opened his studio. He was an outstanding photographer and took many famous inidivuals portraits. He died at age 59 and his son, Joseph Harrison (went by Harry or J.H.) operated the studio for a few years. J.H. and his wife Alice Grant Lamson travled west to California. They were one of the early residents of Tujunga, CA. Harry photographed nature and local residents, buildings, etc. in the area. I'm currently doing geneology, and J.H. married my great aunt Alice.

Joseph Drew was the son of Theophilus Drew and Dorothy Pease. The earliest record speaking of Theophilus is from Madbury,NH in 1770.Theophilus enlisted in the army during the Revolutionary War. He marries Dorothy Pease, the daughter of Deacon Samuel and his wife Dorothy, sometime between 1776 and 1786. Their family consisted of Sally, Samuel, Joseph, Theophilus,Dorothy,Gilman,Betsy, and Holman. The children were all born in Gilmanton,NH. The Federal Census of 1790 indicates that Theophilus was the only Drew as a head of household in Gilmanton. Joseph married Mary Locke(?) and they had a son George Washington Drew born 25 October 1821 in Gilmanton, NH. I do have more information on Theophlius, but have no idea where he was born or who his parents were. I hope this is of help.

Lets see if we can sort out these Joseph Drews. Maybe some of them are the same man? So, some of them could be eliminated if anyone can help.

Joseph Drew b. abt. 1788 who murdered Ebenezer Parker in 1808 in Falmouth, tried in court in Portland and was hung for the murder, so he died about 1808.

Joseph Drew b. 20 May 1788 Maine who married Bethany Thompson on 2 Apr 1812, died after 1860 Portland, he was a Cooper by trade per 1850/1860 census but his birth date was 1790 or 1792 depending on the census.[This is the one I am trying to find parents for.] There is also another Joseph Drew b. abt 1792 who was also Cooper in Portland in 1860 census, m. Sarah (__)-a second marriage?, is it a different man?

And, of course there were other Joseph Drew's born near this time; one b. abt 1782 Barnston, Canada who m. Patience Lamb/or Baldwin; one b. abt 1786 Little Falls, ME; one b. 11 Aug 1781 Barnstead who m. Abigail Foss; one* b 23 Oct 1794 in NH m. Mary Locke and Bethiah Johnson; another in 1798 NH (whose father was also Joseph) m. Rhoda (__); another one b abt. 1795 who was son of Theophilus Drew; Deacon Joseph Drew* b. 9 Dec 1777 in Madbury; one b. abt 1774 Barrington who m. Polly Eaton and went to Canada; and I could go on. Some of these [*] are not the same one I am trying to find parents for.

I have this info on Ebenezer Parkier:

At the time of the 1790 census, he had a family of 1-0-7 (one male over 16, seven females).
Portland Gazette and Maine Advertiser, Vol. X, Issue 41, January 25, 1808, p. 3:

"Died,.......
At Saccarappa (Falmouth) Mr. Ebenezer Parker of Cape Elizabeth, a deputy Sheriff; in consequence of blows from one Joseph Drew. Parker, the preceding day to that on which the assault was committed, arrested a Mr. Quinby and left him with a keeper from whom he escaped to Drew's shop, who is a blacksmith. Parker on going to the shop to take him again was forbid entering; a man in company however pushed the door open, at whon[ce?] Drew threw a sledge and then took up [a] piece of a sleigh arm and with the first blow felled P. to the ground and repeated the blows several times, his skull was fractured in a shocking manner, he languished several days. Drew has been committed to jail in this town, to take his trial for murder at the Supreme Judicial Court in May next."

I do know that Thomas Shaw of Standish wrote a poem about the murder. It was entitled "The Hanging of Drew". Does anyone have Ebenezer's parents or burial place?
There is a lot of data about the family of Thomas DOUGLASS (1798 - 1864) on RootsWeb Family Trees. However, the researchers disagree with the 1850 & 1860 censuses which say that Thomas DOUGLASS was born in Massachusetts. They also disagree slightly on his date of death, but FindaGrave shows his tombstone in the Songer Cemetery, which says he d. 23 Oct. 1864.

Do you mean that Thomas married in Risingsun, Wood Co., Ohio? Do you have a reference? RootsWeb Family Trees show the marriage in Rising Sun, Ohio Co., IN, but I don't see it on the Indiana marriage database.

Online Illinois Marriage database has Thomas DOUGLASS m. 24 Feb. 1858, Vermilion Co., Amelia OLMSTED. FamilySearch says Amelia B. GREEN, b. 1808, Addison, Rutland, VT, dau/o Hannah _ & David GREEN, m. 4 July 1828, Chautauqua, NY, Stanley OLMSTED.

The 1860 Census, Danville P O., IL, has DOUGLASS, Thomas, 62, b. Mass.; Almira, 52; Erastus, 20; Angeline, 18; Ithamer, 15; Louisa [OLMSTED], 13; & Emery DOUGHERTY, 17.

In 1880, Almyra DOUGLASS, 72, VT NH VT, was at Catlin with her dau. Louisa DRASLY.

Thanks for the tip; will def. check it out. If any one has the info it should be the Nat'l Archives. After John Martin returned to portland he became a harbor pilot in the port of Portland for many years. But have not had much luck in obtaining info on Portland harbor pilots in the late 1800's either. I think I need more practice in this research business ! Thanks again.

Don't know if this will be of any help, but one of my Gr-Grandfathers served in the Union Navy as an Ensign & Pilot in the waters of Eastern North Carolina. Although he lived in N.C., he was born in Maine & still had many relatives there at the time. I obtained copies of his record, including a letter from him, from the National Archives in Washington. I've had these records since 1972, so don't have a current address for the records division in D.C.

Mr. Edgecomb thank you for taking the time to respond and making your suggestions as I am new at this research business. I notice that those John Martins you listed were all ARMY personnel. As mentioned my relative was in the NAVY during the Civil War and there does not seem to be much of any info on that branch of the service. In addition he was an enlisted man not an officer.I have found over time conflicting info on him and would like to clarify the facts, but I don't have much hope. Thanks again.

There are lots of resources. Online is the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System (http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/), which shows the following John Martins from Maine:

Soldier Name

Side Function Regiment Name

1 Martin, John Union Sharpshooters 1st Battalion, Sharpshooters, Maine Infantry

2 Martin, John Union Infantry 9th Regiment, Maine Infantry

3 Martin, John Union Infantry 12th Regiment, Maine Infantry

4 Martin, John Union Infantry 16th Regiment, Maine Infantry

5 Martin, John Union Infantry 20th Regiment, Maine Infantry

6 Martin, John Union Infantry 20th Regiment, Maine Infantry

7 Martin, John Union Infantry 27th Regiment, Maine Infantry (9 months, 1862-63)

8 Martin, John M. Union Artillery Maine Garrison Artillery

9 Martin, John R. Union Infantry 14th Regiment, Maine Infantry

10 Martin, John W. Union Artillery 1st Battalion, Maine Light Artillery

11 Martin, Johnson Union Infantry 11th Regiment, Maine Infantry

Then, you can go to the Adjutant General's reports (
Ref LL 973.7441 A1 1861 MHS Annual Report of the Adjutant General of the State of Maine For the Year Ending Dec. 31, 1861, Stevens and Sayward, Printers to the State, Augusta, 1862). There is a volume for each year of the CW.

Once you are sure which unit he served in, you can check to see if there was a pension file. The pension files have the most genealogically useful info. The service file is of limited value.

Good luck!

These are grandfather>Father>Son. I am going for a long shot. I want to know if by any chance that Eliphalet Wheeler was born in Cumberland Co. Main. All of my paper work to and fro says that he was born in Bath, Sagadahoc, Maine, but we can find no record of him being born in that town, county. We need to know the information to make an application for a DAR. The father son documentation is the only thing we need now.

Eliphalet was born in 1804 or 1808, m. Lydia Guilkerson on 10-17-1833 in Ohio d. 5-21-1865 in Ohio.
His parents are Enos Wheeler, and Meribah ??

Could they have been in this county at the time of his birth? Maybe working or just visiting?

The Joseph Drew who was the son of Theophilus Drew and Dorothy Pease would have been a brother to my great great great great grandfather Samuel. They lived in Gilmanton, NH. until Theophilus's death. Then some of the family moved to Vermont. Theophilus enlisted in the Rev. War from Madbury, NH. I will see what else I have on Joseph, but it is not a lot.
