Does anyone have anything that goes further back into Charles Hinckley's and Elizabeth Baxter's ancestors? I have genealogy of some Hinckleys starting with Samuel, first ancestor to arrive in U.S., but can't figure out where Charles fits in. I have nothing yet on Baxter.

I have John McGown Jr and Abigail Brown in Dresden, Maine in the 1810 and 1820 censuses. They apparently had a large family there. John's sister Jane married Stephen Marson, also in Dresden. John and Jane's parents were John and Mary. Do you know anything about earlier McGowns?

It could be. I have no way of knowing except that there are Hinckley's on my mother's side of the family. My great grandmother was Bertha Baxter Hinckley 1858 - 1931. She married Josiah Porter Scudder 1852 - 1933. They had 2 sons one of whom was my Grandfather Eliot Rossiter Scudder 1882 - 1954 and I know they lived all of their lives on Cape Cod. I also know that Augusta Hinckley 1819 - 1909 was married to my great, great grandfather Josiah Joseph Scudder 1802 - 1877.
Thank you

Joshua F. Studley was master of the tern schooner "Rebecca J. Matthews." This schooner was registy no. 110142, signal letters J.N.R.L., 589 gross tons, 560 net tons, 143.6 ft long, 32.5 ft wide, 16.1 ft depth, built 1873 in East Boston. In 1892 this vessel's home port was Boston, and the principal owner was a J. H. Conant.
Joshua Studley's gravestone in West Dennis Cemetery says that he drowned at Ponce, 8 Dec 1894. Ponce is the major city on the south coast of Puerto Rico, and the seaport is called Playa de Ponce. I do not have records of the Yarmouth Register for that year but a search of them could tell you more. Also you might try the Barnstable Patriot (on line through Sturgis Library).
I would like to know more about your descent from Joshua Studley for the Dennis Historical Society files. Please contact me directly at the address below. I can provide ancestral information on this family - I to descend from the Studleys.

Burt Derick
Librarian, Dennis Historical Society
bderick37@comcast.net

Joshua Freeman Studley, dob 29 Oct 1842, son of Joshua Studley and Polly Small Nickerson was my great, great grandfather. Family lore has it that he was captain of a merchant ship, possibly involved in trade to the far east, and that the ship was lost at sea with all hands. I am looking for verification of this, the name of his ship and the date it was lost.

If William Fuller was born 1785 and his mother Elizabeth born 1740, she would have been 45 years old when he was born. Are you trying to say that this is not feasible? I still have no information about ANY children that may have been born to William Fuller (born 1736) and his wife Elizabeth Jenkins (born 1740). Elizabeth was the daughter of Ebenezer Jenkins and Elizabeth Tupper. I believe that William Fuller and Elizabeth Jenkins were married on March 24, 1781.

Anyone have any new information for these people?

Thanks from Nora

> How can I obtain probate records from Barnstable County
> dates between 1829-1840?

Call and ask them - (508) 375-6725. It will help if you already know the volume and page numbers. Scott Andrew Bartley began publicaton of an index to the probate records in MD, but no new installments have appeared since "Bradford to Butler" in 2005. If you are looking for any surnames in the range of Abraham to Butler I can look up the volume and page numbers for you.

Dale H.
Re: Gabriel Wheldon and spouse Margaret Diguina(?) 1620's

It is important to point out that there is no evidence (proof) to support the author's claim that Mary Whelden, baptized 23 December 1621 in Basford, Nottinghamshire, was the wife of Richard Taylor, tailor of Yarmouth.

See:
Jan Porter and Daniel F. Stramara, Jr., "The Origin of Gabriel1 Whelden of Yarmouth and Malden, Massachusetts" (NEHGS Register, 163(2009):253-261).

This issue (lack of evidence) was never addressed by the authors in the article. The conclusion was based solely on the court documents whereby Henry and John Whelden, along with "Rich: Taylor Taylor and Rich: Taylor husbandman," contested the will of Gabriel Whelden [Middlesex Court Files Folio 11; HLS #411] (concluding that 2 Richard Taylors married 2 daughters of Gabriel Whelden).

However, the above reference to two Richard Taylors could have been a recording error. Either the name of Richard Taylor was repeated for emphasis, or Rich: Taylor husbandman was in error for Gyles Hopkins, the husband of Catharine Whelden.

There is no proof that Mary Whelden, baptized in 1621, survived infancy and was not buried along with her brothers Thomas (who had a burial record) and John (who did not).

There is no evidence to support the claim that Mary Whelden accompanied her father and siblings to New England; that she married anyone; that she was the mother of the children of Richard Taylor, tailor of Yarmouth; or that she was the woman found drowned in the wrecked boat off Duxbury in 1673. Simply put: Mary Whelden's name never appeared in the records in Dedham, Yarmouth or Malden.

I welcome the discovery of the Gabriel Whelden records found in Basford, Nottinghamshire, but cannot accept the claim that it was Mary Whelden who married Richard Taylor, tailor of Yarmouth without any supporting evidence. Unless and until that evidence is brought to light, I will remain skeptical and consider it "possible" but not proven, which should have been made clear in the article.

Best regards,
Pam Sears

So we are related a wee bit.
Did you see the big article in the NEGS this last week?
I live in Louisville, KY.
I changed Gabriel's wife to Mary ?. Know he married a Margaret, however Margaret was not the mother of Ruth or Katherine and John and Henry.
Somewhere I picked up the last name as Weeks with a ?. I don't remember where I found that.
When Gabriel's daughter Ruth's child Elizabeth Taylor married Samuel Cobb the name Cobb came down to my grandmother.

That is correct. Margaret was not Ruth's mother. The only name we found for a wife for Gabriel was a Jane in Basford Nottingham.... From all evidence Jane died there. ALL of Gabriel's children were born in Nottinghamshire. NONE were born to Margaret...So that means none of the children were part Wampanog, that is if Margaret was definitely a Wampanog. There has been no real proof of that. Bearce's manuscript says Margaret was Wampanog and also mother of a few of Gabriel's children... But we proved him wrong....It would have been really neat to be descended from a Wampanog, and she was supposedly the niece of Massasoit. But, you can't argue with real proof.

Thank You, Thank You and your cousin. The article in NEHGR is beyond just great, especially for those of us who now have 2 Wheldens to go along with our 2 Taylor antecedants. All your hard work has truely gone a long way to make sense of what was a murky problem. Thank you.

Donna

> The one posting they descend from Bearse, who wrote Bearse's
> Manuscript, stating that Gabriel married Indian Princess, niece of
> Massasoit, and that some if not all of the children born to Gabriel
> are descended also from this Margaret... There are tons of holes
> in that manuscript.

There certainly are. It was pretty well discredited in 1938 - see TAG 15:111-118.

> Also an extensive article has been written and put in NEGHS
> book for October 2009. Article written by Dr Daniel Stramama.

For those who have not seen it, the current issue of the New England Historical and Genealogical Register (Vol. 163, No. 4, October 2009) contains the article - Jan Porter and Daniel F. Stramara, Jr., "The Origin of Gabriel1 Whelden of Yarmouth and Malden, Massachusetts" - pp. 253-261.

Dale H.
The one posting they descend from Bearse, who wrote Bearse's Manuscript, stating that Gabriel married Indian Princess, niece of Massasoit, and that some if not all of the children born to Gabriel are descended also from this Margaret... There are tons of holes in that manuscript. Upon a research trip to Nottingham a few years ago,my cousin Jan Porter and myself found the Baptism records for all of Gabriel's children at St LeoDeGarius Parish in Basford, Nottinghamshire, England. The records are on MIcrofiche in Nottingham libraries. We took pictures of the pages we needed that pertained to Gabriel and his children from these microfiche pages. Gabriel's wife in England was Jane, who had to have died after the last child was born. We found original documents complete with wax seal and Gabriel's mark still attached at the University of Nottingham. His uncle Thomas Wheeldon left his land and Blacksmith shop and all he had to wife Christobel(Thomas's wife) and also to Gabriel. Upon Christobel's marriage to another, everythinbg went to Gabriel. His lands were in Basford. All this can be found online.. Or check my tree on here. Also an extensive article has been written and put in NEGHS book for October 2009. Article written by Dr Daniel Stramama. After cousin Jan and I found the Baptism records, and also many other document,s, Daniel Stramara was able to purchase a copy of the microfiche to clean more info from it.. The best thing you can do is contact the NEGHS in Massachusetts to get a copy if this booklet with the article. Seems the NEGHS hired some professional genealogists to go to Nottingham to see if they could dig up more info. All these years, everybody took Bearce's Manuscript as gospel for information on Gabriel family. Jan and I are not professional but some times it doen't take a rocket scientist to find buried treasure!!! You can reach me directly at::: jadaflashe51@aol.com.. Please mention Gabriel when emailing me. I have copies of the original Baptism records, not the transcribed one, have them also.. Bt the way my Wheeldon lines go from Gabriel to son John to son Joseph who married Hannah Gorham and removed to Cape May. I have pictures of headstones for Joseph Sr and Jr posted on my tree online... Nut much left to the headstones. But you can make out the age and date at the bottom of Joseph Jr's heastone to know that it is indeed his... Hope to hear from some of you.... After all, we are cousins.....
Wow, actually Patsy Paugh Ramsey went to my high school in West Virginia (Parkersburg High School) but she was a few years behind me. Really nice family, regardless of all the stuff that was spread all over the gossip magazines, etc... No one who really knew them ever believed anything bad about that family.

Anyway, I'm descended from Alice Martin Clark this way:

Alice Martin Clark Bishop> Damaris Bishop Sutton> John Sutton> David Sutton> Sarah Sutton Cox> Isaac Cox, Jr.> Philip Hamilton Cox> Evan Carmack Cox> Hallie Frances Cox Shuman> Robert Lee Shuman> Mary Frances (Fran) Shuman Miller (me). I think that makes Alice my 8x great-grandmother.

Sarah Sutton Cox & her husband, Isaac Cox, Sr., were both born in Somerset County, New Jersey. They came to Hacker's Creek, in what is now the West Virginia area, shortly after their youngest child, Isaac Cox, Jr., was born on 27 Jan. 1792 in Somerset County, New Jersey. About 20 years later, some of the family moved to Greene County, Ohio. Others stayed in the (now) West Virginia area, like in Ritchie County, or moved back there from Ohio, like in Calhoun County or Gilmer County. Some of them would be the founders of Coxs Mills, WV.

Hope this helps your research!

"Cousin" Fran
