Although Portuguese immigrants are documented on Martha's Vineyard as early as the late 1700s, the majority of the Portuguese immigrants who settled on the island of Martha's Vineyard (in Dukes County, Mass.) arrived during the second half of the 19th century and the first part of the 20th century. Some lived first in New Bedford, Fall River, Providence, Boston, and other maritime communities in southern New England before eventually settling on the island.
