There is a book on the portuguese families of Martha's Vinyard that has been very helpful in my quest in uncovering my ancestry!

My great grandfather, Manuel P. Soares came to MA in 1907 with his sister Mary Soares. They were the children of Manuel A. Soares and Maria doe Anjos. Manuel P. Soares married Margarida Medieros Estrella dau of Joao M. Estrella and Margarida Julia Prudencia in 1908 in New Bedford. They had their first child in 1909 in New Bedford by the name of Lillian Soares. All of the rest of the children were born in Oaks Bluff. Claire b 1911, Albert P. b 1913, Eugenia b 1915 and my grandfather b 1916. I have much much more information on all of this and would love to share when you get to that point! They lived in Oak Bluffs and had the following children:

Beverly Goodwin Corwin
Louis Jr.(called Jim)
Ida Goodwin Gardner called "Buzzy"(named for her aunt Ida Soares)
Frank Goodwin.

Ida,(Buzzy) and Frank have both passed on.
Louis (Jim) lives in Edgartown on Island
and Beverly lives on the Cape, I am not sure which town.

Their is a two volume book called Our Portuguese Heritage.
Thank you for writing back. My grandfather's adoptive name was Domings. He grew up in Somerville Ma. My grandfather was the youngest of five children. He was the only one who did not keep the Soares name I believe. After my grandmother died,my mother visited with Ida Soares, she was so very nice to her. She provided her with so many pictures of her grandmother and grandfather as well as information. My mother while on the island met some relatives but unclear who they were. Ida did talk about her nieces. My mother started work on the Soares and Estrella geneaology sometime ago but put it down. I am now helping her with this. She has been unable to get a copy of the birth certificate for her dad I believe it is because he was adopted. She has contacted Town of Oak Bluffs regarding getting a copy and she is waiting to hear. The other sisters did go in to foster care and I believe they all kept the Soares name. Eventually Margarita Estrella came back to claim the girls, she believes, but we are not certain of this. We are also wondering if we are related to Manuel Cardoza III who is the fire chief of Tisbury. There is a Manuel Cardoza III on the Soares/Cardoza family tree. Any and all help with this would greatly be appreciated. Are the nieces of Ida Soares still living on the island?

I grew up in Edgartown, the next town south of Oak Bluffs. My Grandmother lived in Oak Bluffs, and we went often to visit.
I remember Albert well. He was called, "Albert the Barber"...I remember him well into my teens. He was a handsome, suave, distinguished looking man with a mustache and always dressed to kill! I can see him now, always dressed with shirt and tie, wearing a felt dress hat, and with an umbrella on his arm. He was well liked and well respected.
Albert and Ida had no children. However, Ida had a sister who also lived in Oak Bluffs. The sister was not always well and Ida and Albert were very much a part of their lives, and they loved those nieces and nephews as their own. I believe the nieces and nephews inherited Ida's house at the time of her death. It has since been sold.

After graduating High School, I went to work for the telephone company here on the Island. Ida and I worked in the same office. She was sooooo tiny! She was pretty and sweet, and intelligent. She loved a good laugh, and like Albert she was always dressed just perfectly with every hair in place. She remained that way into her final years.

There is a barber on the Island , in fact I graduated high school with him, named Phil. He is known as Mr. Phil. I believe that he worked for Albert when he first got out of barber school.
There are lots of folks here who could tell you lots about Albert and would more than likely know the family story.
I would be happy to ask around if you would like.

Interestingly enough, I have Soares, Estrella and Medeiros in my family! However, I am not aware of any connection to the above mentioned families.
What was your father's adoptive name? Did the sister's grow up here on Martha's Vineyard?
Pink

Yes! Albert P. Soares was the son of Margarida Medieros Estrella who was Jesse/Jacintha's younger sister. He had 3 sisters (Lillian, Claire and Eugenia/Jeannette) and a brother John who was the youngest and also my great grandfather. On October 20, 1920 they were all admitted to foster care through the District Court, Dukes County, Oaks Bluff. They were committed on a neglect complaint made on the mother for desertion as she left the children to care for themselves. Their father was admitted to Taunton State on June 20, 1925. I'm pretty sure that Margaret (Margarida) came back for the girls, but for some reason Albert stayed with the Mesquita's and my father was the only one that went on to be adopted. The Mesquitas were barbers and Albert later went on to also be a barber himself (he owned Albert's in Oaks Bluff). My mother (Albert's niece) got to meet Ida (his wife- originally a Gonsalves) some years ago before she passed and said that she couldn't have been any nicer! Do you have any connection to any of this, or happen to know anymore about it?

I know this post was from quite awhile ago, but I thought I would add some information anyways for whomever might view. Jessie (Jacintha Estrella) b. 1878 was the daughter of Joao M. Estrella and Margarida Julia Prudencia. Jessie also took in Albert Soares (her sisters son-my grandfathers brother) in the 1920s which would explain his name showing up in their household in the 1930 census.

You can type in genealogy message boards Portugal and see what comes up or go to RAOGK (ramdom acts of genealogical kindness) to find a volunteer that can do the lookup in Portugal.
I am researching my Machado family and just found a cemetary record online at the St. Patrick's Cemetery in Arroyo Grande in San Luis Obisbo, CA for John P. Machado born around 1853 and died in June 1917. Also there I found Maria Luisa Machado native of Boston age 25 died 1887 in Arroyo Grande who is listed as John P.'s wife. In my records. John P. (Pereiro or Purero or some such) Machado had 3 children Mary (who married a Domingas), John & Manuel (who was my great grandfather). If you have anything more on the Machado line let me know but I would be interested in all you have for Maria as well as that is my great great grandmother.

I have family tree stuff on Family Tree Maker.com

Re: looking for origin of name DeElva, middle name of my father

Dear Ms. Gibbs,
DeElva is a contraction of two names and two cultures: Like:
D' from Digby - pronounced and spelled "De"
and Elva from Elva. Originated in the foothills of the Old Smokey Mountains as part of English plus Scottish/Irish origin as applied to individuals born in mixed-culture families settling the Appalachian corridor. This corridor stretched from Louisiana up through Tennessee on to Kentucky ending a bit through North East Ohio as European settlers moved West. Some of the mountains that were crossed are named the Appalachia Mountains.

Hope this helps. I have had this name for 62 years. I was born in the old smokey mountains and yes, my grandfather was Digby and his wife, my grandmother was Elva. Their names were combined to name me and the tradition of the name has continued. If your father was given this name, I suspect that it was to capture the spirit of cultures joining. When doing your research, look for two names that end with Elva and start with either Di, D' or De. When you find these two, you will find where your Father received his name from.

Sincerely,
DeElva

My husbands Great Grandfather was from San Miguel Portugal (Azores) Manuel Rapoza DeSilva/ DaSilva. He married Maria De Concesao Botelhio and had the following children: Angelo Joseph, Peter Pacheco, Emily, Celestina, Alicia, Evangelina, Maria De Asencion, Joseph, Maria De Anges, Manuel DeSilva. Now the story passed down the line is that Angelo Joseph came over to America with his sister Emily and her husband Joseph Decurt. When he got to America he changed his name to Angelo Joseph Pacheco (taking his twin brothers middle name) and using as his last name.. thinking it sounded more Americanized. This is the story I have heard but I do not know if this is a fact and would like to find help with others that might match this family or from someone who can do a look up possibly in Portugal for family records and see where the Pacheco name came from. I really don't even know where to start. Any suggestions or can anyone help me?

rpacheco1@aol.com
Hello,

My name is Carina and I live in the UK. I am trying to locate the descendants of my great granddfather's sisters. Their names were Maria De Jesus GOUVEIA born in 1894 in Carviçais, Moncorvo and Evangelina Da Conceição GOUVEIA born on the 14/02/1897 in Carviçais, Moncorvo. They both imigrated to Plymouth, Massachussetts. Evangelina married Celestino Carvalho from Castanheira de Pera in Portugal. My grandfather told me that they had 3 children Antonio (called Tony), Abel and Dolores. Obviously my grandfather's memory is not as good as before - he is 90 years old. Tony used to write to my grandfather, Antonio Dos Santos GOUVEIA.

Any informations are more than welcome.

Many thanks,

Carina

Reason why I ask is I am a king from Halifax, MA originally. I really don't know much of anything about my family as my dad died when I was 2. His name was Frank Edward King. If this is what you are doing, I would so much appreciate a look at what you have...I only know of one uncle and Aunt Richard and Martha King of Whitman and I think Martha is deceased.....I never got to know my uncles and Aunts.
