Hi There, Sarah (Sallie) McCombs is my ggg-grandmother. I know EXACTLY where she, her husband, and son-in-law are buried. It is an abandoned cemetery in Saltillo, MS. That cemetery is called the "Kyle Hill" cemetery. Kyle Hill was the original name for Saltillo. They were some of the first pioneers who moved to Northern Mississippi after the, so-called Chickasaw Session. In fact, I am going to try to purchase that cemetery. It is small, and totally grown over with trees and brush.

Frank: I have read all your posts. It's just a hunch - NO PROOF - but I think who you are looking for is James McKeown McCully, son of Ephraim Dill & Eliza B. McCully. He was born 13 Jan. 1834 S.C. and was killed in the Battle of Sharpsburg MD.17 Sept. 1862. Although he is buried at the battle sight, a marker was placed in the McCully Family Cemetery, east of Saltillo MS. I once had the same problem (with a different ancestor) a "W" that turned out to be an "M". I wish you peace.
I think that is the Midway garage, and if so, the GPS coordinates are WAY off. I'm waiting on winter to go out there though because it's probably grown up pretty badly right now.

Thanks for all your efforts! Yes - I have the census records, etc. for Matthew Lacy Cobb and his descendants-- it's confirming the ancestors that's the challenge!

Here is what I have on Valina Cobb. She was born 1874 and died 1900 per her grave marker in Booneville Cemetery in Presntiss Co MS (see findagrave). She married A.F. Simmons on 25 Oct 1893 (I think you already had that). A.F. Simmons is Archibald Simmons - he is found as a widower in the 1900 census. (I can't find in my notes where I got the January death date for Valina, but it was before the census.) In Archie's household are two young children: Patty Lou (born 1894) and James C (born 1897). After this census, Archie re-married and had more children, which you can readily find on ancestry.com. (Valine, Archie, Patty Lou, James C, the second wife Lorena, etc. are all found in the Boonville Cemetery.)

Good luck finding a will for John S Cobb!

Thanks! If Matthew Lacy Cobb is one of her children, that would bring it to a total of 6, with 5 living in 1900: Cora, Matthew, Hugh, William, Richard and Valina, with Valina (married name Simmons) having died Jan 3 1900 before the 1900 census.

I suppose the best way to prove anything would be to find a will for John S Cobb or his widow, naming the children. But I am far from Mississippi and not likely to attempt that any time soon. Thanks again for your help!

I need someone who lives in Lee County to take a cemetery picture for me. This particular grave stone has already been photographed and loaded to Find a Grave. However, there is a shadow on the picture that obscures what it says. The person who took that picture no longer lives in the area and cannot take a new one.

The individual whose grave stone is needed is Charles Collier Clayton, b. 1801, d. 1881. Wife's name was Eliza B. Richey Claygon.

Eliza and Charles were my 3xgreat grandparents. I need the picture to include in my application for Daughters of the Republic of Texas. Eliza's father got a land grant from the Republic of Texas in 1839.

I have tried by first name only and last name only and can not find them.

I even searched by male b 1813 + or - 5 born SC living Mississippi and didn't find them.

I do presume from the 1900 census that Roda says she had 6 children with 5 living that I have one child missing (I think a daughter died after her marriage in 1893) But I need to keep working on this.

Eliz

Do you have a Matthew Lacy Cobb in your files, bible, etc.?

My Matthew Lacy Cobb was born March 1862 in Mississippi. His 1939 death certificate in Texas says his father was John Cobb, but mother's name was unknown. It seems intriguing to me that there was a John Cobb in MS in 1862 married to the daughter of a Matthew Lacy... but I can't find my Matthew Lacy Cobb in any censuses as a child. No record until his 1887 marriage in Texas. Was hoping you might have come across the name?

My great grandmother was Sarah C."Sallie" Creilly, the daughter of Robert Honeyman Creilly and Marilyn Dandridge. He came to America from Antrium, Belfast, Ireland around 1840. They married in 1841. They lived on the Creilly Plantation in Tupelo, Mississippi.
He died around 1856, Born ?1814. Sarah married DAn Rains or Raines and they had 2 daughters, one my grandmother, Inez Raines or Rains, Minnie, sons John, Babe and others; who lived in the Starkville area. Inez married ?Pierce. I read one entry that said there were no gravemarkers left in the Creilly Cemetery on the plantation. I would love to connect with you and see some of the markers your have. Do you know if any of our family are Native American Indian heritage. I did not listen as I should have when my mother talked about her Grandmother "Sallie"; but she mentioned someone be full blood Native American Indian. Also on someone's entry said DAn shot "Sallie" when she was real young with child; but never heard of that from Mother. REcords show Dan Raines and Sarah C. Creilly married 11/23/1881. Any information would be greatly appreciated. It gets so confusing with so many names alike and dates don't add up with birth, death, marriage records. Sincerely, Johnnye Faye Holloman Eysvogel

One of my ancestors helped found the town of Chesterville, which I believe straddled the Pontotoc-Lee County line. Does anyone know where I can go to research the exact location of my ancestor's property? I do not know any info, but I thought I might be able to search for deeds/patents that could start me in the right direction.

New Tabernacle Church and cemetery is at the corner of Highway 145 and county road 5210 about 2 miles north of the town of Baldwyn in Prentiss County. It's probably the one referred to as Tabernacle. I believe it was also known as Asbury Cemetery (there's another called Asbury today) in it's early days. What name are you looking for? I have a Prentiss County cemetery book and I'll confirm this person is buried here.

were you ever able to get the picture? I would love to know any info on the home. Hearing alot of "rumors". My mother in law told me that she was always fond of the home when she lived in the apartments down from it. Wish I could get behind the apartment there now to get pics of what is left. She told me that it was never completely cleared & that it is covered in brush now, saw part of it a few weeks ago from the road but the apartment complex isnt a safe are for strangers.

Seeking possible marriage information for Palina Hasentine Merchant, b. 4 Apr 1866, Lee County, MS. She appears with her birth family in 1880. By 1890s, most of the family have moved on to I.T. or Texas. No sign of Palina Hasentine. We assume she married, though it is possible that she died.

Sandra Merchant
