Thank you so much. There is a wealth of info on many other Vandercars on this site, but very little on the line I am looking for. I checked a website for the Church listings, but again that was in vain. But I'll keep looking deeper. I live in the Albany area and may start looking into some of the libraries and/or hall of records for some of these records.

The main source I have is the 1850 federal census with John Vandercar, his wife Mary, and their sons Richard and John and a William Fisher of unknown relation. I have an 1840 census for John Vandercar, but the info attached to that is minimal. The 1830 census for "John Vanderkar" is just the same.

I have an 1860, 1870, and 1880 census for the son Richard, but nothing after 1850 for John. Was wondering if he being a loyalist, did he and the wife take off to Canada during the war and stay there.

Sorry to hear about your father. I have a large family and I too am trying to be the "family historian" for all of us. I really got into it when I found a Stars & Stripes front page from 1945 that detailed the death of my grandfather in WWII.

Thank you again for your time and assistance.

I am looking for info pertaining to the Vandecar family from the Albany area. It appears that my 4great-grandfather is John Vandercar, born abt 1807, who married Mary, and had at least one son, Richard Vandecar, born abt 1830, who married Sarah and had at least one son named Leonard, b.1862. Leonard had a daughter named Sarah (Sadie), b. abt. 1889, who had a daughter, Catherine in 1915, my grandother. Would anyone have any info on this line of the Vandercar/Vandecar family?

I will look for these papers and will be happy to forward a copy to you. My Dad, Edward Vandercar , passed away May 16th , 2009 (at 95 years old) - in his sleep. He was the historian but I'll do my best.
I think I may also have some records from the Dutch Reformed Church - I'll search.

I am not sure about that. His father was Thomas Duhig.
And yes it was Denis in the link you sent "Squirrel Farm"

I did look at the other passengers on the ship no others from Emly co.Tipperary but some from Limerick which I know the family had contections to.

They were William Bourke 25
Michael Hogan 20
Daniel Dunworth 29
Catherine Magner 21

We have no stray John's who could have travelled with him.
I got this info off the Ellis Island site
Thank you so much for your help. Hope all this makes sense just rushing off to work. Will have another look when I get home
Regards Lesley

Marriage or Death records were not kept by NY State, Albany County or Albany city until at least 1870. You would have to find specific church or cemetery records, or find a newspaper article.

Hi Patty,

I checked the NYS Vital Records Index for 1889-1891 and the only death for a Forget in the Cohoes area was Franseste Forget who died 6/9/1889 in Cohoes, record # 19978. I suppose Esther could easily be a nickname for Franseste. I could not find an obituary in the Cohoes Daily News for her. If this is not her and you need more years searched, please post again.

I checked marriages 1889-1891 too-just in case-and found only these in Cohoes: 1) Delia Forget, 8/13/1890, # 12827 and 2) Alice Forgete, 10/11/1891, #17794. (Index does not show to whom married.)

Mary Anne

Thanks Mary,

Despite my best efforts to type things correctly, I still make mistakes (very frustrating). You are correct of course, sorry for confusing those who I am asking to help me.

The "magdaleon's" were listed directly below the "sisters" on the census, and then below the magdaleons, the "inmates" were listed. I have a social security SS-5 from my relative that says she was a nun. So I am thinking that maybe a magdaleon was a nun in training?

This is what is great about genealogy. You get to learn about geography, history, ethnic cultures, occupations, etc.

I will start with what you gave me. Thank you for the e-mail of the Sister archivist. Perhaps I can ask her about that title.

Thanks again.

Joe

Hi Joe,

This is actually St Ann(e)'s, and not St Mary's. I believe it is the same organization that survives today. Please check out http://www.stanneinstitute.org/about/history.cfm

Also, there is a 1901 article about likely the same organization at http://query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=980DE0DE153DE...

and probably many others if you will Google St Ann's (or St Anne's). I do not have personal knowledge about them.
Should you have difficulty finding out what you need to know directly from St. Anne's, there is an archivist at the Roman Catholic Diocese (which I am guessing had jurisdiction over St Anne's when it was run by the Sisters of the Good Shepherd prior to 1981) named Sr. Nola Brunner (nola.brunner@rcda.org) who has been enormously helpful to me in the past.

As far as "Magdaleon"--could this derive from Magdalene (as in Magdalene laundries) and refer to a laundry worker? It does sound as though 'laundry reformatory' may have been an accurate description at some time in the past.

Good luck!

Mary Anne

Hello to all,

I have a first cousin (2x removed) that I found in a 1930 census for the “House of Good Shepherd and St. Mary’s School of Industry” in Albany, New York. My cousin is listed directly below those listed as “Sisters” as a “Magdaleon”. Can anyone share information on this organization with me? I understand it might have been a reformatory? I have also found some very negative comments about a similarly named organization in Ireland that was a laundry reformatory. So, I am a little confused, my searches are not very informative about the institution in Albany, New York. Can anyone help with an informative link or website and does anyone know what a “Magdaleon” was? Here is the document I am looking at. My relative is Josephine Mahoney on line 43. Thank you.

http://search.ancestry.com/Browse/view.aspx?dbid=6224&ii...

Regards,

Joe
Good Morning Mary Anne: I very sorry it took me so long to reply to your message.

Not much computer time between work and family - the days just go by so quickly.

Thank you so much for taking the extra time and the searching you did.

This McIvor is really a strange thing - here's the reason I thought he was one in the same.

I can't remember where I saw it (will recheck) but on some document I saw the Lawrence in N.Y. was from N.S. and born @1896 which is correct for who I'am searching.

Once time permits I'am going to get back into searching.

Thank you once again for all you help - time and suggestions.

Have a great day!!

Sandi

I found a table of contents that had him listed in chapter XI. "Retiring Officers of 1900-1902" I take for granted it is a book but I'm not sure. I was hoping to find a book if there is one, because it contains it looks like from the table of contents a lot of information about that period of time. I'm not sure if I could get a book now, since it was published in the early 1900's. I do have a photocopy of the page he is on. Thanks

Hi Sandi,

I looked into this a bit more for you. The NYS Vital Records Index has a marriage for Andrew L. McIvor on 9/11/1926 in Syracuse, certificate # 27807 (to whom married is not shown in the index). I checked Syracuse city directories for the surrounding years and, sure enough, found a listing for A. Lawrence McIvor (laborer) and wife Deltra M. at 204 Seymour in the years 1927 and 1928 only. There were no other McIvors in the directories for the years I checked.

I would have to conclude that Andrew L. is A. Lawrence. Based on the timing of his marriage (likely to Deltra), it would seem that he is not the same man who married Violet in 1928 in Canada, but who knows. Should you wish to pursue this further, you could send to NYS for his marriage certificate and check date of birth and parents' names. Or you might get lucky and get some help over the phone from vital records in Syracuse. I did look here in Albany for a newspaper account of the wedding, but the State Library does not have a Syracuse paper for that year.

Good Luck!
Mary Anne

I have ancestors who were in New Scotland, Albany Co who married into BULLOCK family. Earliest Bullocks appear to be Robert & probable brother John born circa mid 1700's.
Who are you looking for? what is your dead end Bullock - perhaps I can shed some light. Early sources would be church records, land records, early census, court records.
early newspapers, early city directories.
Many of the church records are in the NYS Library in Albany, NY. Many have been transcribed and can be purchased (Hope Farm Press [Kinship]is one)

Barbara

Hello,

This turns out to be of little help, but I did check the Albany City Directories for the years 1927-1932 for you. This man is shown as A. Lawrence McIvor, wife Deltra M., marble setter, 48 Dove St, for the years 1929 and 1930 only. No indication in the 1931 directory as to where he may have relocated. No other McIvors in this time period.

I noticed that the 1930 census shows him as age 34, first marriage at age 31--leaving little time for Bessie and Violet. Could be inaccurate of course.

Good Luck!

Mary Anne

I thought her mother might have been a Cone.

Judy jumawa@shaw.ca

Hi Mary Ann,

Thank you very much. This information is wonderful. I am so happy that you were able to locate a couple of them. My Evelyn Mackie's middle initial is I, so I am going to look into that record more. Is NYC the only city not included in the marriage index?

Thanks again for your help. I really appreciate it.
Robert

Hi Robert,

I had mixed results with these searches.

The good news is I found Robert H. Shea and Dolores T. Potvin married 8/15/1958 in New Lebanon-certificate # 28918. Also found Francis Fortier and Helen Shea married 11/18/1939 in Lebanon Springs-certificate # 35673.

I found nothing for either Vincent Venzi Brucatti or Bernice Whelan (soundex search) for 1945 to 1949.

The best I could do for John Finn and Elizabeth Murphy was find an Elizabeth Murphy married in Nassau (not far from Lebanon area) 9/4/1936-certificate #48338. However there is no marriage for a John Finn (or any other Finn) occurring on the same date. (Index does not show to whom married-need to search both names). I searched 1935-1937.

The best I could do for Edwin Stanley Lincoln and Evelyn Mackie was find an Evelyn I. Mackie married 3/2/1937 in New Lebanon certificate # 17662. Again there was no marriage for an Edward or Stanley Lincoln (or any other Lincoln) to match her with. I searched 1936-1938.

Hope this helps a little.

Mary Anne

Hi Bob,

I can check the NYS Archives vital records index for you in the next week or so. It is an index only-won't give you all the details-but that's all that is free. Please post what you need and I would be happy to help you out.

Mary Anne

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone might be able to look up two marriage records from the late 1930's in the vital records in Albany. I would really appreciate any help.

Bob
rjd24@comcast.net
