I'm not sure if you are still enquiring about HENRY A. KING, but if you tell me a little more about who/what you have, I probably could help. Henry is as far as I reached as well. kking24@hotmail.com

The Levere's did use the surname of Mayhue for about 20-30 years...according to family legend, Joshua Levere (the patriarch of the branch that used Mayhue) who was married to a Rosanna Vaillancourt...anyhow, apparently Joshua had a huge fight with the Roman Catholic church over the fact that many of his sons and daughters were marrying "outside" the faith...he came home from the argument with the priest, and announced to the entire family that they were no longer Levere's nor were they Catholics. When Joshua died, about half went back to the Levere name, while the rest continued on as Mayhue...so in short, when you are researching the Levere name, you also have to research Mayhue (and it's various spellings)

The only difference I see in the surname of Levere to Lavier to Lavear is due to recordskeepers that spelt it the way thought it should be spelt.

Hi Tim (Mr. Wilson?)-

I did some digging on the Onesimus Newell/Sally Knight connection. I found a book online "The History of New Ipswich, New Hampshire, 1735-1914: With Genealogical Records of the Principal Families" which discusses that town (my Samuel was from NH), & it mentions a Samuel Newell who married a Lydia after the death of his first wife in 1786. Ancestry records reveal an Onesimus Newhall who married a Lydia Mead in 1788 in Harvard, MA- the same place that other record lists for Onesimus & Sally's wedding. My current hypothesis is that Onesimus married Sally Knight, who died soon after, then married Lydia Mead. Further investigation will hopefully get me somewhere with this.

Have you found any new info?

Chris

Thanks so much for your reply. I have been searching on that sight for a few hours now!! You have been so helpful!
My ancestors are Galbraith's. They arrived from Ireland around 1835-6 and they lived in Brier Hill for some time. They also lived in Canton before they moved to Romeo, Michigan. They may have known the Bucks. If I run into any info on Bucks I will be sure to let you know. Many many thanks, Kathy

These name identities point out that Asa Sherman is the grandson of Benoni Sherman and Margaret Havens of North Kingstown, Washington Co., Rhode Island. Benoni and Margaret had a kid named Lois Sherman who married David Bates. Here is what is known about Lowry Sherman: He married Hannah Matteson on September 7, 1761 in Coventry, Kent Co., RI and had a son named Nathan, who was born on December 18, 1762 in Coventry, Kent Co., Rhode Island. Captain Nathaniel Sherman’s son Benoni Sherman was honorably discharged from the service (during the War of 1812) at a camp near Brownsville, Kings Co., New York. Alpheus Sherman, son of Benoni was born on January 12, 1807 in Camillus, Onondaga Co., NY. Lois Sherman (Maitland) was born about 1804 in Oneida County, New York. She and her husband had a son named William Henry Maitland who was born in Brownville, Jefferson Co., New York on December 18, 1823.

Grandparents: Nathaniel Havens Sherman (d. 1826 in North Kingstown, Washington Co., Rhode Island) and Elizabeth Eldred (d. 3-24-1829 in North Kingstown, Washington Co., RI) Married: October 10, 1773 in North Kingstown, Washington Co., Rhode Island
Children: Asa (c.1774), Benoni (c.1775 to 1848 in Jefferson Co., IN), Nathaniel (c.1783 in RI to 5-17-1858 in Milton, Jefferson Co., IN), Elisha (c.1790)

Here is what is known about Captain Nathaniel Sherman and his descendants:
---He was a soldier in the Revolution. I have searched for years for information on this family and am still searching. It is possible that he is the one in Ballstown, Albany Co., New York in the Census of 1790. If so, at that time he had: 2 males over 16; 5 males under 16; 7 females over 16. It is badly damaged by fire but talks of his wife Elizabeth; nephew Nathaniel, son of sister, Sarah, wife of Silas Sherman; John R Sherman; and the widow of the late Elijah Sherman. He is titled Captain in many references. ---He married Elizabeth Eldred on October 10, 1773 in North Kingstown, Washington Co., RI and had three known sons: Nathaniel, Elisha, and Benoni. She references a newspaper article, evidently published in 1902, but with the year 1876 written in pencil, that says: "A Canaanite who has been with us for many years. Benjamin Sherman's interesting recollections.

Benjamin Sherman, who now resides at Canaan, Indiana, was born in Onondaga County, NY, November 4, 1815. He came with his father, Nathaniel Sherman, together with Benona Sherman, Elisha Sherman, Elder Leavitt and a Mr. Minor, to Indiana in the year, 1816. They came across the Allegheny Mountains in wagons to the headwaters of the Allegheny River, came down that river and Ohio River on flatboats and a party landed at the mouth of Eagle Hollow, Christmas Eve, 1816, with the exception of one of the party, who remained in Ohio for a while. Mr. Sherman's recollections of early times are vivid, and while not seeking notoriety, he talks freely of events in his early life. His early days were times of incessant and hard labor in Milton Twp. his father having built a hewed log house on the farm now occupied by Mr. John Sehrt.
Mr. Sherman was a good stone mason and hauled the stone to build the fence around the front of the Lawson farm. Much of this stone was gotten out of the creek bottom in water, waist deep. Mr Sherman would often break the ice in the creek and wade around all day hauling stone for weeks at a time, late in the fall and early winter. He says he has stood in the Ohio River at Madison from morning till night for three weeks at a time unloading rafts of lumber and putting it ashore, part of this time being between Christmas and New Years. In answer to the question whether this had injured his health, he said it had not. He said the best brand of whiskey could then be purchased for 25 cents a gallon.
Mr Sherman is now in his 88th year, is hale and hearty, goes to church every night, when meeting is in progress, reads the Courier without the aid of glasses, and is Jolly and full of fun. He has in his possession a flintrock rifle that his father carried in the war of 1812. He remembers when Governor Hendricks and his daughters rode horseback from Madison to Washington. Mr. Sherman has won fame as a weather prophet and it is declared by some that they will take his predictions for the next 24 hours, in preference to the official forecast from Washington for the same time."

Great grandparents: Benoni Sherman (7-7-1719 in N. (She m. 2nd 1638 Ezekiel Holliman). John's land in Salem is described as bounding Mr. Skelton's land on the north, and near to Capt. Endicott's as of June 6, 1637. He was presented by the Grand Jury for shooting a wolf dog of Col. Endicott's in the yard of the latter, and was fined 5 pounds for the offense; subsequently the fine was remitted. The name of "Sweet's Cove" was given to an inlet near his residence. In 1637 he obtained a grant of land in Providence. This passed to Mary after his death. She returned to Salem and rec'd a land grant there the same year. After Mary m. Ezekiel Holliman, he changed the name of her dau. from Meribah to Renewed. JULY 1, 1639: Mrs. Holliman is alluded to in a letter from Rev. Hugh Peters of Salem, to the church at Dorchester. He says that she and certain others had "the great censure passed upon them in this our church," and that "they wholly refused to hear the church, denying it and all the churches in the Bay to be true churches." JULY 31, 1681: Ezekiel Holliman's will is proved. To son-in-law John Gereardy and dau. Renewed, his wife, both formerly of Warwick, now of Prudence [sic], all interest in house, lot, meadow and upland in Warwick. CHILDREN OF JOHN SWEET & MARY: JOHN SWEET, JR. JAMES SWEET, RENEWED SWEET. Renewed b. c1625 Salem, Mass?; d. aft 1681. m. John Gereardy d. aft 1681. They had 3 children: Mary, John, Phillis.

John SWEET (1), Family ID # 175 the immigrant ancestor, was born about 1598 or before since his son, James (3), was recorded as being born in 1622. John Married Mary (WESCOTT?). The records state that their children were born in Wales. They were doubtless of Welsh origin, and were the progenitors of the SWEETS of Warwick and Kings Town, Rhode Island. (Genealogies of Central New York, (Vol. 1, pg. 420.) In the book," Rhode Island Genealogies" pg. 911; it states that, John and James Sweet, brothers were of Welsh birth. It is well established that John SWEET (1), their father was a man of some years beyond youth when he arrived in America. John (1), is of record as of Salem, Massachusetts, as early as 1632 when his land there was referred to. He had a grant of land in Providence, Rhode Island, in 1637, in which year he died, and his widow then received a grant.
" Austin's Genealogical Dictionary of Rhode Island," pg. 195 reads; John SWEET was living 6 Jun. 1637, but died sometime during that year presumably before the land grant was official. Later in Salem, Mary, is called "WIDOW SWEET". It is possible that John SWEET never went to Providence, but died in Salem.
The following from a manuscript by CHAPLIN, (which is in the Historical Society of Rhode Island) states the land must have been granted to John SWEET (1) for his second son, James SWEET (3), in a deed dated 8 Nov. 1686 mention all right of land in Providence, as my father, John SWEET, was one of the first purchasers thereof. Mary (WESCOTT?) SWEET, widow of John SWEET (1), and their three children moved to Providence, Rhode Island and upon her eldest son, John SWEET (2), only eighteen years of age and James (3), two years younger fell the responsibility of providing for the family.
Mary, widow of John (1) married a second time the Rev. Ezekiel (HOLLIMAN) and after their marriage, her new husband changed her daughter's name from Maribah to Renewed. After the death of HOLLIMAN, 17 Sep. 1659, Mary SWEET HOLLIMAN returned to Salem where she died 31 July 1681. The death of John SWEET (1) and the subsequent marriage to Ezekiel (HOLLIMAN) doubtless hastened their removal to Warwick, known at the time as Shawmuch.
The Sweet family of Rhode Island is for the most part descendants of these two brothers, John (2) and James (3). They were among a list of persons received as inhabitants of Warwick, Rhode Island previous to 5 Jun. 1648. (Austin's Genealogical Dictionary). They and their descendants spread throughout the neighboring towns of East Greenwich, Coventry, Exeter, North Kingstown, South Kingstown, Warwick, Portsmouth and Prudence Island, Rhode Island, and there are still many living in these towns in Rhode Island today.
SOURCE: Salt Lake Library Film #0037237 "Sweets of Rhode Island Descendants of John SWEET".

Mary Greene (m. James Sweet)

Parents: John Greene Sr. (c.1597 in Gillingham, Dorsetshire Co., England.to 7-7-1659 in Warwick, Kent Co., RI) and Joan Tattershall (d. 1643 in prob. RI) Married: November 4, 1619 in St. Thomas, Salisbury, Wiltshire Co., England
Children: John (Bapt.8-15-1620), Peter (Bapt.3-10-1622), Richard (Bapt.3-25-1623), James (Bapt.6-21-1626), Thomas (Bapt.6-4-1628), Joan (Bapt.10-3-1630), Mary (Bapt.5-19-1633)

They came to Boston, Massachusetts on the ship “James” in 1635 and resided in Providence, Rhode Island until 1643.

Grandparents: Richard Greene
Children: Peter, Richard (d. 1617), Robert (d. 1650), Rebecca, Mary, Rachel, Anne (Bapt.8-31-1595), John (c.1597), Thomas (Bapt.5-13-1599 in Gillingham, England; buried 8-15-1599)

Great grandparents: Richard Greene (d. between 5-10-1606 and 5-3-1608 in Gillingham, Dorsetshire Co., England)
Children: Richard, Catherine

Richard2 Greene, second son of Robert Greene, succeeded to Bowridge Hill, on the death of his brother Peter. By his will, dated May 10, 1606, and proved May 3, 1608, he made bequests to his children and grandchildren, and appointed his "son and heir apparent, Richard Greene," his executor. As no record of his burial nor of the baptisms of his elder children is found in the Parish Register of Gillinghain, it is probable they were recorded in one of the hamlets of the parish where he resided prior to his succession to the estates of his elder brother (p. 36).

2 great grandparents: Robert Greene
Children: Peter (d. 1583; interred at Bowridge Hill), Richard, John, Alice, Anne (m. She married my GG-Grandfather, Charles William Cheney, in Aug., 1875 in Oswegatchie, where he worked as a lumber estimator and she worked as a camp cook.

This is one of my two lost lines.
Do you have information about William !'s death ? I don't. I have his birth as 1833 so if he lived to 1908,which is not beyond the realm of possibilites, he would only be 75.. Sounds like a description of an "aged father" to me. So unless someone gives me information that he died before 1908, I will keepp him as the son of Jacob and Abigail

Originally I thought that his parents were Abigail Evans and Jacob Johnson, but according to William Jr.'s obituary in 1908, it lists his father William as still surviving. The obituary says: "He leaves a wife, two sons, an aged father and many other relatives to mourn his loss."

The William Johnson born to Abigail and Jacob died well before 1908, so that does not agree with William's obituary below:

Canton Commercial Advertiser January 1908
Russell

William Johnson who died of tuberculosis
about four o'clock in the morning,
th 13th day.of January, at the home
of his son Fred, in Pyrites, was the son
of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Johnson, born in
this town in 1855. The most of his life
was spent in this town and Hermon, the
latter place being where he buried his
son Glenn several years ago. Mr. Johnson
was a.very kind and obliging neighbor,
always glad to give a helping hand
-whenever needed. He leaves a wife,
two sons, an aged father and many
other relatives to mourn his loss.

The funeral was held at the home of his son
Fred and the burial was in the Hermon
cemetery. Mrs. Johnson wishes to
thank the neighbors and friends who so
kindly assisted during the long illness
of her husband, and all who gave their
sympathy and help at the time of his
death and burial.

Kathy is correct this is your Blanche (Sullings) Roberts. I have copies of several probate documents for her uncle John Foote which clearly identfies her and her sister Helen (Sullings) Snyder.

Blanche (Sullings) Roberts was my second cousin three times removed. The following is her ancestry back three generations. Of interest is that her great-grandfather John Sullings Jr. a, marine corporal, arrived in Boston Harbor on 7 October 1770 aboard the HMS Salisbury. Shortly after his arrival in Boston he deserted and must have fled to Bristol County Massachusetts where he met his wife Ruth Spooner, descendant of pilgrim (Mayflower) Richard Warren.

1. Blanche1 Sullings (Henry, #2) was born circa 1886 at St. Lawrence County, New York. She married Albert Roscoe Roberts on 2 Jul 1902 at Cabell County, West Virginia.

2. Henry Harry2 Sullings (Henry, #4) was born on 20 Jun 1852 at West Stockholm, St. Lawrence County, New York. He married Clara E. Foote (see #3), daughter of Michael Foote and Margaret Debar, circa 1874. He married Hattie K. Bess, daughter of William D. Bess and Harriet A. McDowell, on 3 Jul 1899 at Covington, Kenton County, Kentucky.
Children of Henry Harry2 Sullings and Clara E. Foote (see #3) were as follows:
i.	William H.1 Sullings was born circa 1876 at St. Lawrence County, New York. He died on 25 Jun 1888 at Barboursville, Cabell County, West Virginia, of Diphtheria.
ii.	Ella C. Sullings was born circa 1878 at St. Lawrence County, New York. She died on 30 May 1888 at Barboursville, Cabell County, West Virginia, of Diphtheria.
iii.	Charles R. Sullings was born circa 1880. He died on 9 Jun 1888 at Barboursville, Cabell County, West Virginia, of Diphtheria.
1	iv.	Blanche Sullings.
v.	Helen L. Sullings was born in Aug 1889 at Central City, Cabell County, West Virginia. She married Lloyd Everett Snyder, son of David W.
Julius Clark Tilden 1809-1892

Julius Clark Tilden was born in Hartford, Vermont, September 7, 1809, died at Ames, Iowa March 23, 1892, of inflammation of the bladder. At the age of 16 years he left home and went to Rochester, Vermont and entered the employ of a brother engaged in the mercantile business, where he lived for 40 years and during that period he carried on business for himself in company with George Lyman. Here he held many civil offices, serving as colonel of the state militia and postmaster of the town under President Franklin Pierce. He was married in 1836 to Eliza M. Briggs of that place. During a few years residence at Potsdam, New York two sons were born. Both died in their infancy.

In 1860 death claimed a third son, 9 years of age. In 1861 he buried his beloved wife, and the following year his remaining two sons, aged sixteen and twenty enlisted in the Union army. He remained in Rochester until 1867 at which time he joined his children in Iowa.

In later years he was called upon to mourn the loss of two granddaughters. It was as he looked upon all that remained of one of these dear ones, to whom he was greatly attached, that he said: Another link in heaven, Grandpa will come soon.

In the death of Colonel J.C. Tilden this community suffered no common loss. He was a man of marked individualities, and exhibited traits of mind and heart which made him a man of marked influence in every community where he lived. The best life is not often the one that creates the largest sensation, or pushes its personality ever before the public eye, but rather the one that succeeds in imprinting the most and best of itself upon the minds and building it into the characters of those who moved within his circle, be that circle large of small. Judged by such a test this life, which has just gone out in the mystery of death, is of more value to us than if he had made explorations in Central Africa or original discoveries in science. He was of robust and rugged physique, deliberate in motion, dignified in speech, thoroughly genuine and sincere in everything.

Of strong convictions and clear cut views, he was still broadly tolerant of the views of those who differed widely. He had hearty sympathy with the great moral reforms of the day and hearty contempt for meanness and oppression in any form. He was a man of rare social gifts, entertaining in conversation, to an unusual degree, a lover of quaint and humorous anecdotes, of which he had an unfailing store. He was self confident without egotism. Perhaps the most notable characteristic of his nature was the prevailing and persistent serenity and equanimity of his disposition under every variety of fortune or circumstances. Although he had an almost ideal temperament it was re-enforced by the strongest resolution and the highest courage. When fortune frowned upon him and calamities darkened his horizon he faced the storm without faltering. Adversity never soured but....ture. All his later years were give to a ministry of helpfulness and strength to others. It is one of the rarest things in the world to grow old gracefully and pleasantly to carry the weight of 82 years with the jauntiness and blitheness of early life. Such lives are needed to teach the world that, amid disappointment and failures and sorrows of life, after all, laughter is better than tears. National grief and marble shaft are wont to commemorate the great but they seldom perpetuate the memory of grander virtues or a nobler life. We speak of death as separation, but to children and grandchildren there can be no separation, for already into warp and woof of every life have been woven some of the elements which made this life so worthy of imitation.

Say not of the friend departed,
He is dead, he is but grown
Larger souled, and deeper hearted;
Blossoming into skies unknown.
All the air of earth is sweeter,
For his being's full release,
And thine own life is completer,
For his conquest and his peace.

The funeral services of Mr. J.C. Tilden took place at the Congregational Church on Friday PM at 2 o'clock. The services were conducted by the Rev. E.C. Moulton of Red Oak, Iowa, formerly of Ames, Rev. Mr. Douglass assisting. The Music was by a quartet consisting of Miss Marie Chambers, Miss Mary A. Nichols and Mr. Brown of the I.A.C. and Mr. Carstens, Miss Mary Johnston accompanist. The service was very appropriate and impressive. Mr. Moulton did not preach a sermon; he talked to the friends and relatives concerning the lessons of the beautiful life which Father Tilden had lived among us.

Anyway, on the SLC family:

Deacon William H Reynolds was born in NY about 1808, he was the son of Truman Reynolds, who appears to have been a soldier stationed first at Ogdensburg and then Sackets Harbor, during the war of 1812. His wife (unknown) and son William and daughter Nancy lived in the Lisbon area while he served.

Both Nancy and Wm H stayed in the Lisbon area and are buried in the Lisbon White Church Cemetery.

I do not know what happened to Truman and his wife.

Uriah married Cemantha Flack and they are also both buried in Lisbon.

If I can help any other way, let me know.

Happy Hunting!

Clifford Janack is my maternal grandfather. His daughter Carolyn is my Mother. Sounds like some of you may be her cousin or second cousin. I'm having trouble tracing my tree farther back than Charles & Georgianna Janack (immigrated from Canada in 1870/1875). I'm finding many different spellings of Janack which might be part of my problem.

Here are a few reasons why I think they are Blanche's parents

1.On her marriage she states she was born in St Lawrence County
2. She lives in Cabell County West Virginia

Henry H Sullings is living there [Cabell County] according to the 1900 census with a wife of 5 years. His first wife, Clara Foote Sullings dies in Cabell County West Virginia in 1894.

Henry and Clara Sullings live in St Lawrence county on the 1880 census with 2 children-William-4 and Ella-2

In 1888 3 of Henry and Clara's Children die of diphtheria in Cabell County West Virginia

Ella C Sullings-10 d 30 May 1888
Charles Sullings-8 d 9 Jun 1888
William H Sullings-12 d 25 Jum 1888
_____________
The Daily Journal-Ogdensburg New York 13 Aug 1888

Pierrepont-Aug 10
Funeral services were held by Rev William Whitmore for the three children of Henry Sullings, who died of diphtheria in June. Text from the 14th chapter of St John, a part of 6th verse "I am the way"

The services were very affecting and much sympathy is felt for the trebly bereaved father and mother who are left alone with one little baby girl who is 18 months
____
Could this baby-18 months old-be Blanche Sullings?? [1886-1887]

Kathy

There is a public notice in the St Lawrence County papers for the probate of John Foote. He is the brother of Clara Foote Sullings. In the notice they list all the next of kin of John Foote----Listed with several other names are Blanche Sullings. Helen Sullings and Henry Sullings, spouse of Clara Sullings, deceased.

I think that Blanche and Helen are children of Clara Foote Sullings--On probate if the sibling is deceased as Clara is her children are listed along with her spouse.

Go to this website http://news.nnyln.net Search in quotes
Click on St Lawrence County
Search-"Blanche Sullings"
This will bring any article with her name and you will find the Public Notice about the probate of John Foote.

_____________
I don't know where or when Helen was born but it seems that she is also a child of Clara.

Kathy
