1906 Murder in Mamaroneck

I've learned that one of my ancestors Pietro Ferreri was murdered in or near Mamaroneck at a 4th of July parade in the early 1900's. I just found a NY Times article about a Michael Ferrari who was murdered on July 5, 1906 in Mamaroneck. My question is can anyone tell me where I may find some more information on this event? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi! Jessie B Duncombe was my grandmother! I've heard the names Tyther, Brown, and Abigail and I know a few of my Duncombe relatives, but beyond my grandmother's brothers, I really don't know much. Sadly, we never wrote anything down. (She always said that some past relation had been the Duke of Norfolk, but who knows?!) Let's exchange info!

My name is Elsa,I have such a desire to know my roots. Most of all I am trying to find, my mother Ruth Cordero CABAN, side of the family. Her mom Clotilde CABAN, died when my mom ruth, was very young, about 10 yrs old. Her mom had massive heart attack,in Brooklyn (Kings county Hosp)in 1953, she was just 48 yrs old. For whatever reason comunication with my mom's sister in Puerto Rico ceased. Mom never heard of them ever agin, She is now 69 and hasn't stopped mentioning ever since I can remember that she would like to someday meet her first or second cousins, that live in PUERTO RICO. My mom's Granddad (Juan Caban) and her Aunts born in Moca, PR(Flora & Francisca Caban) lived in Barrio Espino Añasco, PR in the years 1945 & 50"s. My mom remembers, her mother getting mail often from this place and time. If you can please help me find her cousins or give me ideas on how to go about it. I would greatly appreciate it. I want her to have this before she leaves this world. I would like to find how i can confirn that Juan Caban and Abad Caban are brothers, also. Very important. Thank you and God bless you. email: holyb4him@aol.com Elsa
Also looking desperately for my mom's youngest brother, Born Moises Cordero, march 18, 1946.Adopted by his 3 years taking care of him, foster parents that lived in yonker, ny. He attended yonkers public school from about when he was 7 yrs old through 11, when his adoption was signed by my grand dad,so that that moises and his adopted parents can freely move to where they wanted to go in Texas. Correspondense was received from Moises to my father severeal times, till his adopted parents ask to stop so he can start fresh. Mom remembers that he wrote to their dad that he was taking violin lessons. We think Moises first name was not changed just the last name except for maybe from spanish Moises to Moses because at 11 years old my mom remembers them calling him by his first name. (My grandfather had permission to visit him because social services got involved due to my fathers illness not because of negligense, till he was officially adopted several yrs later, like I wrote before, they wanted to move to Texas We have his original birth certificate. ny ideas??? he is the only living sibling of my mom plus she doesnt know any of her cousins. Please help. Thank you, Elsa
again. God Bless. holyb4him@aol.com

I am looking for the ancestors of Lewis McDonald born 1709 in Inverness-shire. He emigrated to New York and became a wealthy farmer in Bedford township, Westchester county. His grave marker is inscribed: "Sacred to the memory of COL LEWIS MCDONALD ESQ and Sarah [Rumsey] his wife being a native of North Britain borne at Strathspey 1709 and departed this life 24 July 1777. He was a fervent Anglican. Throughout the first half of the eighteenth century, the Church struggled along with support of an English institution called the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts. In 1744 Lewis McDonald petitioned the Society for assistance in building a church and obtaining a minister.
In his will he left ove 5,000 pounds to his children and grandchildren. His grandson, Alexander Lewis McDonald was Commissioner of Deeds in New York City and married Elizabeth De Hart Bleecker.
Surely, somebody must have a clue as to his Scottish ancestors.

Hi Cathryn:

Yonkers will not do lookups by phone; you will have to submit a genealogical research form (located on their website) and pay the $22 fee. Because the records are before 1914, they are located only in Yonkers.

The turn-around time is very good (only took 10 days a few weeks ago for me).

Hi Cathryn:

Yonkers had two daily papers in 1910 - the Yonkers Herald and the Yonkers Statesman. They are not digitalized, but are available on microfilm at the Yonkers library.

If you say you believe he was Catholic, looking at the location of 99 Buena Vista Avenue, he would have probably been a parishioner of St. Mary/Immaculate Conception Church. That church has a parish cemetery located on Sprain Road in Yonkers. Burial records are located at both the cemetery and parish office; the records are alphabetical in the office and by date at the cemetery. The staff there are very nice and willing to help as long as you don't ask for 20 lookups at once.

Good luck!

Bryan Healy

I'm not sure what you have posted here. If it's Family History Centers, I had meant you should search for one in your area, which I assume is in England? I'm not certain how they work outside the USA, but they may be able to order a set of death records for the 1910 era in Yonkers NY. You only need to call them and ask if it's possible.

You could contact your local Family History Center to see if they can help you find a death record. Center locations should be available at this site
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp

Or contact the City Clerk at cityofyonkers.com to request a death record. There likely will be a fee.

Sidney's address in 1910 was 101 Buena Vista Ave.

It's possible that if he had no relatives in the USA that he was buried in an unmarked grave.

I did some checking into the friend he was going to in Massachusetts when he arrived in the USA. Fred C Gibbons worked for a book publisher and was also from England. He lived in Springfield Mass. and is there in the 1910 and 1920 census. I doubt that information is of any help, but you may want to see if there any descendants who have family history, on the very slim chance that Fred Gibbons kept a diary, or personal letters that might shed some insight to the fate of your relative.

Another option is to contact the Library in Yonkers webste. they should have an option Ask a Librarian, where you could email and inquire about the publication in Yonkers 1910 era to see if they have digital copies. If so, perhaps they know of volunteers that will look for mention of your relative.

Many thanks for your reply. I have tried findagrave.com, search but couldnt see anything. I have emailed them but no response to my emails. His name was Sidney Borland Jump and he would have been born 1872, my mother said today that he died around 1910 because he died just before my grandfather was born in May 1910. I am eternally grateful that you have replied, it gives me some hope. Your are the first to answer me in 3years of searching for him.
thankyou

I am trying to find out information in relation to my g grandfather Sidney Borland Jump. I am aware that the Yonkers newspapers have changed name to westchester parers, well, so I am told. My gr grandfather was a sports editor for that paper and went to live there in 1906. Sadly in 1911 he died from typhoid after visiting another country but was buried some where around the area of westchester. I am sure he was a catholic. I have emailed and telephoned many places in America trying to find out where he is buried and also more information on his job and living conditions, but nobody even responds or wants to help me.
I am trying to find a connection with a hereditory problem and wondered if he had it also. I would dearly like to get his death certificate but yet again no one in America seems to want to help me. Can anyone on here help.

Hi Chris:

Being members of the Church of Ireland, they most likely would have joined an Episcopal parish here, as Judy says. The main Episcopal parish in Yonkers at the time was/is St. John's in Getty Square (founded in the 1600s). There are others in Yonkers (St. Paul's and St. Mark's are two off the top of my head), but I do not know if they were around in that time (I'm pretty sure St. Mark's wasn't).

St. John's has its own parish cemetery on Saw Mill River Road in Yonkers; it adjoins Oakland Cemetery, which is non-denominational. Those two cemeteries would be your best bet and if you luck out there, I would try Mount Hope in Hastings-on-Hudson. St. John's cemetery does not have an office on site, but I believe you can contact the parish house for information on the cemetery.

Good luck!
Bryan Healy

If they were Chruch of Ireland they probably went to and Episcaple Chruch. They are many in Yonkers. Or they could have been Presbrtyeran. Again many chruches of the Denomination as Yohkers is a very large city.
Do a google lookup for these churches.
Judy C

I am looking for any information on my grand-father's birth mother. She was born 3/9/1895 in White Plains, NY to Frank M. Cos Jones and Elenora Mae Cos Jones. She married Evan Edward Rowe and died in child birth on 8/27/1927 in Oskaloosa, Iowa. We are trying to find her family. Perhaps we have her name or birth information wrong.
