Hi Jen, Monni and Victoria. I just ran across your conversation on the Williamson and Herring families. My name is Garland Duwayne Williams, and I'm part of this crowd too, as my grandmother was Eva Mae Herring, sister of Eunice and Monnie. Eva married into the Williams family, also in the Dillon area.

I would love to share information with you all, and hear your stories and memories. I live in Los Angeles, but did get back to the Carolinas occasionally when I was younger.

You can reach me at dwilliams1951@gmail.com, or on the Ancestry.com site under Williams-Jeffrey family tree.

McIntyre/McIntyne from possibly Robeson County, NC.

A friend gave me an old Bible found in a packhouse that had this name in it given by Cora, dated 25 Dec 1909. In this Bible there were about eight small pictures of different young ladies.

I would be glad to give this Bible and pictures to the family of D.R. McIntyre.

My great-great grandmother Cloddy Smith was from Smiths, Robeson County, NC and she married my Great-Great granfather Squire Graham. I think he was born in Maryland. His son Squire Washington Graham married Addie Johnson of Bennetsville South Carolina. Their son Washington Gill Graham was born in Stewartsville, Scotland County, NC and he married Martha Carr of Rennert, Red Springs, NC. She was my grandmother and namesake. Her Father was Henry Carr of Warrenton North Carolina and her mother was Grace Sellers of Robeson County, NC. This is my Paternal side of the Family. Is there anyone that have information to add or relations with my family? Gale

Yes! You are the first person that I have found (via the internet) that is related to me. I am L. Graham. My great-great grandparents are Henry CARR and Grace CARR. Grace/Gracie maiden name is SELLERS, she had several children. I am related to Margaret CARR; Margaret married King Graham and only a few generations later I was born! :) I only found death record information that states Max SELLERS is Gracie's father. If you have more info, e.g. records, pictures, oral history please share if you would like I can give you the link to the information that I found!!!

It took me a while to unravel the Dial-Paul relationship; I hope this helps resolve your questions.

Edith Dial born about 1813 had six children for Rowland Paul. The children were born between 1834 and 1845, and they carried the Dial surname. Around 1850, Edith Dial married Benjamin Lowry and two children were born between 1855 and 1858; they carried the surname Lowry.

Edith's son with Rowland Paul, Quinny Dial, married and had a family. After Quinny Dial died, his children dropped the surname Dial and used the surname Paul. Quinny's descendants sometimes refer to him as Quinny Paul, although he is listed as Quinny Dial in records.

Hector MacLean
Lumberton

Hector MacLean, of Lumberton, died peacefully at his home on Pearl Harbor Day, Dec. 7, 2012.

He was born on Sept. 15, 1920, a son of the late Governor Angus Wilton McLean and Margaret French McLean.
He was predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Lyl Warwick MacLean.

MacLean was also a brother to the late Margaret McLean Shepherd and Angus Wilton McLean Jr.

He is survived by his only child, Lyl MacLean Clinard and her husband Aaron of High Point; grandchildren Lyl MacLean Clinard Kluttz and her husband Bill of Newport, R.I., and Aaron Neal Clinard Jr. and his wife Betsey of High Point; three grandsons of whom he was very proud, Aaron Neal Clinard III, William Clarence Klutt IV and Rudduck Mendenhall Clinard. He is also survived by his nephew John Calvin Shepherd of Greenville, S.C.; two nieces, Lee Shepherd Gurtin of Berwyn, Pennsylvania and Martha Godwin Shepherd of Decatur, Ga.; and several grandnephews and nieces.

During his 92 years, MacLean proudly and unselfishly lived a life of service to many. Privately, he benefited family and friends in gifts of his time, talents and assets. Publicly, he served in numerous leadership roles for the First Presbyterian Church of Lumberton (including Elder Emeritus), the Presbyterian hierarchy of government, the city of Lumberton, the State of N.C., and his Nation. As a graduate of Davidson College and while attending the Wharton School of Business, he volunteered at the outset of World War II. This patriotic service included being a Captain in General George Patton’s Third Army during its successful campaigns in Europe. At the conclusion of those perilous times, he was honorably discharged with the rank of Major and a Bronze Star Award to begin his life of public service.

Upon his return from the military service, MacLean successfully completed law school at the University of North Carolina, whereupon he opened a law practice in his hometown of Lumberton. After only a few years, he was called upon to lead as its President, the National Bank of Lumberton, an institution founded by his father in 1897. This was the beginning of a long history of success in the banking industry, continuing until his retirement while serving as President and later CEO from 1955 – 1990. He led the bank’s efforts in one of the early banking models of mergers and acquisitions under the banner of Southern National Bank. This multi-state corporation at his retirement led shortly thereafter to the merger of equals with BB&T.

MacLean’s political career included service as Mayor of Lumberton and a State Senator in the N.C. Legislator. While as a State Senator for 10 years, he proudly sponsored bills that led to Pembroke State College becoming a part of the UNC System and the establishment of the North Carolina Zoo.

In the field of education, MacLean distinguished himself at: UNC-CH as President and Founder of the Medical Foundation of North Carolina for 22 years and recipient of the University’s Distinguished Service Award; St. Andrews Presbyterian College as its Founding Chairman of the Board of Trustees and the recipient of its Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters Degree; Davidson College’s Board of Visitors; UNC-Pembroke’s Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters Degree and its Alumni Association’s Distinguished Service Award; and a Trustee at Union Theological Seminary. Today, most of these institutions have in his honor Hector MacLean scholarships.

Out of his passion for history, MacLean dedicated countless hours as: Chairman of the Council of the Thirteen Original States, Trustee of the U.S. Constitution Council, Founding Chairman of the Robeson County Historical Drama Association which produced the outdoor drama “Strike at the Wind”, President of the Presbyterian Historical Foundation, Chairman of the North Carolina Bicentennial Commission, DAR Medal of Honor recipient, and an early member of the St. Andrews Society of North Carolina.

Among his many honors were his induction into the North Carolina Business Hall of Fame, an award of the Order of the Long Leaf Pine and the naming of Interstate 95 through Lumberton as the “Hector MacLean Highway”.

The family wishes to recognize these special caregivers, who for many years devoted their time, energy and love like family to MacLean, Jennifer McLean, Lillie Galloway, Carl Baxter, Jackie Perry and Mary Washington.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church in Lumberton. Interment will follow in Meadowbrook Cemetery immediately after the service.

The visitation for friends and family will be 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the home 2101 N. Elm St., Lumberton.

The family has requested that any gifts or memorials be directed to either First Presbyterian Church, Lumberton, N.C. Museum of History Foundation or St. Andrews College, Laurinburg, N.C.

Source: Robesonian, Sunday, December 9, 2012

Submitted by: Sam West sam.west.1@gmail.com
Carole,

Great Marsh is like all other older graveyards here in the South, there are no mapped plots. Back in the day when someone died, one of the Trustees would have told the family where to bury and would have told them that they could have 1, 2, 3, etc... burial places in a row at a location pointed out to them. The same is true for old family cemeteries as well.

If I remember correctly, you are perhaps a descendant of a William Baxley? Could you e-mail me that information again, and is there any chance that your William Baxley served in the War Between the States? I believe I have a newspaper clipping where a W. Baxley and M. S. Baxley were wounded in service.

E-mail me at: sam.west.1@gmail.com

Thanks,

Sam West,
Lumberton, Robeson Co NC

I have been searching for the gravesites of my great grandparents, Peter Parley and Mary Jane McDonald Baxley, that according to their death certificates were buried at Great Marsh Baptist Church in St. Pauls, NC along with s couple of their children. There is no marker and I have written to the church several times asking if they have a lay out indicating who is buried where so they don't accidently dig up any unmarked graves and have never received a reply back. When I have visited the area, I have never been able to locate anyone at the church. I want to place a marker on their graves but until I know where they are buried I can do nothing. If anyone can help me with this issue or put me in touch with the right person at the church, I would be forever grateful. You don't know what it would mean to me to be able to do something their children could not do. Thank you for any help.
Carol

Jennett was married to Archibald McCormick and Margaret lived with them in Stewartsville . Do you know who William Murphy's parents were? He was Mayor of Laurinburg, NC in the late 1800p's and I think he was a drygoods merchant. Thanks for any help. Jim Utley

I am trying to determine if the Richard Ivey in this 11-28-1889 article from the newspaper "Carolina Watchman" is the son of Leonard Ivey, my paternal line from Robeson Co., NC. (Link below)
The article mentions that he was employed by S. N. Ferguson of Bladenboro. Besides being the Chairman of the Bladen School Board in 1901-02, I know that he was also in business for himself. Two other names mentioned are Joseph Rorgers and Thomas Pittman. Does anyone know anything about this man or any of the other men mentioned in the article? Does anyone know what type of business Mr. Ferguson owned?
http://ncecho.cdmhost.com/cdm/compoundobject/collection/p150...

Hi Sherri,

I believe we may be related! My maternal great grandfather was Matthew Alston and his wife was Maybelle/bettie Alston.
I have not been able to find any information on them. I know that they were both listed as dead on my maternal grandmothers Mary F. Alstons marriage license July, 29, 1928 Chadbourn, NC. A Lucy Campbell and her aunt Mary Florence became her guardians after her parents deaths.

Mary F. Alston had a sister named Janie, both women died in Raleigh 6 months apart in the early 1940's. Nelson played a big part in our families lives because they named carried on his name with the boys and girls middle names.

I would love to find out if my assumption that we are related is true.

John - I am sorry, but I don't have Owen C. Moore or any of the names you mentioned in the information I have. Although Alfred, Rachel and William B. Moore were all born in Robeson County, they left there some time after 1830 and moved to Carroll County, Mississippi. Alfred and his son, William, both died in 1859 in Mississippi. The fact that they did not remain in North Carolina is making it more difficult to make connections. Do you have any more information for Abraham Moore?

G

Hello Georgia,
I am related to Owen C. Moore who I am pretty sure was from Robeson County. He shows up in the Civil War Rosters from Robeson and there is an Owen Moore in the household of Abraham Moore in 1850 Census for Robeson County who may be the same. Owen C. Moore moved to Marlboro County, SC and was married to a Caroline with small child in 1870 Marlboro Census. Then, Owen appears in the 1880 Marlboro Census married to Sarah with four daughters, Ella, Emily, Fanny and Mary Jane, all born between 1870 and 1880. Owen is listed as a painter in both census' and on the military list. Emily and Mary Jane Moore married Parrish brothers, Alfred and Isaac. Isaac and MJ Parrish are my g-grandparents. Alfred (Ab)and Emily lived in Laurel Hill, Scotland County, NC. Fanny married a Copeland and they are buried in Wallace, SC along with Isaac, MJ and Isaac's father James Henry Parish. Owen and Sarah Moore and oldest daughter Ella disappear after the 1880 Census. I was wondering if you have any info on them before or after these timeframes. Thanks, John

On Route 2, near 301 maybe.

I have heard rumors from older family members that it was plowed over?

It is listed on my Great Grandfather's death certificate.
Eleanor Louisa Singletary is my GGgrandmother I have run into the same problems as you but have her birth as abt 1833 in SC but she is the daughter of Evan Savara Singletary and her line follows with naming the son with the mother's last name. Evan Singletary Jones, than my grandfather Evan Shepard Jones. I too believe the birth should be in NC but no documents or evidence and no information on William Fowler Jones she is his second wife m.abt 1862-63 as Evan Singletary Jones was b.May 1864. My ancestry site is Peter Shepard. Contact me there if you want.

I believe we are related. Have you come across a Mathew Alston?

I believe he was the Son of Nelson and had at least two children my gg grandmother Mary F. Alston her sister Janie Alston of Chadbourn,NC. Lucy Campbell and Fred Alston are listed as thier parents on both womens death certificates as per my maternal grandfather and informant/Jerman Hill.

I found my gg maternal grandmother Mary F. Alstons marriage license where she wed my grandfather Jerman Everett Hill in Chadbourn July, 1928. I ordered this record from the Coloumbus County vital records office and it stated her Dad's name was Mathew and her mothers name I can barely make out but it looks like Maybelle Alston. Nevertheless both of her parents were dead at the time of her wedding July 1928 and her guardians were her aunt Mary Florence and a Lucy Campbell.

We would appreciate any information that you can share about this.
