Jack McGoldrick, 71, a former resident of North Powder, Centralia, Portland and Milwaukie, died of natural causes near Imbler Aug. 20, doing what he loved, bicycling.
A celebration of his life was Friday at Daniels Chapel of the Valley in La Grande. Committal and interment followed at the Summerville Cemetery.
Mr. McGoldrick was born June 29, 1929, to Manthus and Lois Arnold Witty in Lostine. He attended public schools in Imbler, Haines and North Powder. He earned a bachelor's degree from Oregon State University, Corvallis, in vocational education. While attending OSU he worked his way through college by playing cornet ina dance band where he met Arleta Grace Raferty. They were married on June 21, 1952. That marriage ended in divorce.
During the Korean conflict, he served with the U.S. Army 82nd Airborne Division. After his honorable discharge he received his teaching certificate from Eastern Oregon University and a master's degree in chemistry education from the University of Wyoming.
Mr. McGoldrick was a high school science teacher in North Powder, Malin, Seaside, Milwaukie and even a year in France. He was honored as the teacher of the year for three consecutive years at Rex Putnam High School in Milwaukie. He especially loved coaching girls track and volleyball.
In 1998, Mr. McGoldrick was the recipient of the Forester of the Year Award. He was an avid cyclist and participated in tours such as the Hood to Coast run and Cycle Oregon.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Lois McGoldrick Smith and step-fathers, Eugene McGoldrick and Guy Smith.
Survivors include his children, Debra Ann Leslie of Davis, Calif., Alisa Roylance of Salem, Laura McGoldrick of Portland, and Jack McGoldrick of Centralia, Wash.; six grandchildren, hsi companion, Joan Brennan of Milwaukie and other relatives and friends.
