Another online Family genealogy bookstore is born and they are pretty good in the way they market their products. Beside the fact that they have very high quality products, they have a perfect bound soft cover and a hardback format of the rarest books available to researchers, their books are cheap compared to other online bookstore but what make them unique is that they send you with each book order the searchable pdf format on a CD of the book that you order and the CD also contains their catalog. I am a critique for an online blog and I shall not say its name here and I must say that they are very impressive.

I ordered a couple of books from them and I was very pleased with their service and their product.

I know that I sound like I am trying to promote them but I am just trying to give them what is due to them, acknowledgment.

Their Web address is:

www.ancestralbooks.com
Deborah,
Thank you so much for the information and time line about the death records in Oregon.
Does this apply to any birth records. Maria and William had a daughter, Travelita born Sept 1882 in Oregon. Is there a chance she was issued a birth cert?
Thank your for your quick reply and for all the hard work you do for others. Diane McBain

I had posted this earlier today, somehow didn't post:

I find Lucinda Jane Carter, born 7 Oct 1835 in Pike County, IL, daughter of Hugh C. Carter and Leticia Underwood.
married John Milton Pruett on 14 Jan 1858 in Pike Co, IL
She died 9 April 1877 in Central Point, Oregon.
He died 15 Oct 1884 in Central Point, Oregon.
They had children:
Irvin Adolphus, Lorin Allison, Charles Alan, Rodelwyn Hugh, John William, Lettica Jane.

The source identified this Central Point as being in Jackson County, OR.

Because these deaths were so far back in time, there probably isn't a death certificate, or an obituary. Death Certificate weren't "required" until early 1900's; BUT, some counties were still obtaining them, some doctors/coroners were doing them. So, you need to try. Also, obituaries weren't being common until much later, after newspapers began operating with "sophisticated" equipment and paper...but again try.

I'd suggest:
There are volunteers in the Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness:
http://www.raogk.org/oregon2.htm READ the guidelines first.

There are also some volunteers in Jackson County via Genweb:
http://orgenweb.org/jackson/

Ron Bestrom
Tacoma, WA

I checked out his parents and found information on the Internet that his father, Albert of Germany, was laid to rest in Chewelah, WA.

Thomas,
I found your posted family tree (and others having him), which includes a lot of information on your GG Uncle, George. So, other than the census data you already have, you may already have his obituary. But, his "general" obituary may not fully describe this person. A small town newspaper "probably?" had an indepth article about him if he lived in the community as he did, and provided such a service. He died at about 73, in 1975; so, there probably won't be a lot of living persons that interacted greatly with him. Also, it appears his wife, Mabel Viola, died 4 April 1963, in Benton Co. I would suggest obtaining her obit also, if you haven't already.

As far as other information: As a licensed pharmacist, he would have to have had a license. The Oregon State Board of Pharmacy "might" have archives regarding his license data, his education relating to that license, etc.
http://www.pharmacy.state.or.us/ But, it probably won't offer any personal data other than as required for his license.

The company itself, Albert and Raw, probably would have business license archives...IF the state maintained that type of an archive. The Oregon Archives site: http://arcweb.sos.state.or.us/banners/genealogy.htm will provide information on what records are in archives in the state. BUT... Cold papers/ archive records will NOT tell you much about the person.

The archives, general, http://genealogy.state.or.us/ Does show a Delayed Birth record application for George Frank Albright. These are usually filed many years after the event in order to obtain benefits (Social Security) or to obtain passports for travel. You can obtain copies of the documents provided for proof of birth through this site.

There is ONE volunteer in the Random Acts OF Genealogical Kindness in Benton county that might be able to help (If covers the area you desire):
http://www.raogk.org/oregon.htm READ THE GUIDELINES FIRST. I'd suggest a lookup of the newspaper at his death, not just for an obit; but for a general story about the person. Public records are cold documents, property, deeds, liens, easements. But, since his wife died about 12 years prior, he may have established an estate, or given power-of-attorney to an individual. That individual, if not a family member, may be an attorney, there may be a will identifying family members. Otherwise, this person, or another person of your choice, should check the local genealogical society (usually available via the local library), and/or the local library to identfy any information. A lot of libraries are repositories of family trees, history, etc. I spent several hours in the Seattle library looking through such files.

As far as a photograph. Contact any family member that may have or received through parents, photo albums, or other records. I know my parents had photo albums of the OLD family I never knew existed.

Ron Bestrom

Right now I am working on the children of Sidney Elmer Fink, the question I have is about William Gordon Fink. Following is his Obit, then I will ask my questions:
William G. Fink
Dies at Tillamook
William Gordon Fink, a recent resident of Benton county, passed away yesterday at the hospital at Tillamook, following an illness of only a few days. The remains were brought in the Keeney funeral home in Corvallis where the funeral service is to be held at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon. Rev. Morris Goodrich of Philomath will officiate and interment is to be in the Pleasant Valley cemetery.
Mr. Fink was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Sidney E. Fink and was born at Lavaca, Nebraska, February 10, 1912. When three years of age he came with his people to Oregon and the family located in the Evergreen neighborhood in Benton County. He attended the grade school at Evergreen and later the high school at Philomath where the family spent several years. He had lived in the valley up to 2 1/2 months ago when he and his family went to Garibaldi where he had been employed.
Mr. Fink was married November 16, 1933, and is survived by his widow and two daughters. Hazel Joan and Lucille Anne; one brother, Stanley Fink of Corvallis, and one sister, Mrs. E. G. McCall of Eugene.

Now my questions:
What was his widow's name?
What is Garibaldi?
Is anyone working on this family history?
Thanks for any help in this endeavor.
Shirley Farrell

Here's some articles on CB Wells that you might not have:

The Oregonian (Portland, OR) June 30, 1893 Page 3
A Grovery Firm Assigns
Corvallis,OR., June 20-
The firm of C B Wells and Son, grocery dealers of this city, have assigned to J M Porter for the benefit of their creditors. They began business a little less than a year ago with about $3000 in cash. It is stated that the liabilities are in the vicinity of $3000 with assets about $2500. The assignee has not yet completed his inventory, so that no official statement is obtainable.

The Oregonian (Portland, OR) November 11, 1897 Page 3
Street Fight in Corvallis
Corvallis, OR. Nov 10-
Some excitement was occasioned on the street this morning by a personal encounter between ex-Nightwatchman Jim Skipton and Chief of Police C B Wells and his son. The encounter was the result of a feud.

The Oregonian (Portland, OR) December 19, 1897 Page 3
Corvallis
Trial of Chief Wells Ended
Last night at midnight the trial before the city council of C B Wells, chief of police, on a charge of misfeasance, incapacity and inattention in office, was ended. An assault made by Chief Wells and his son, Lee, on J L Skipton, an ex-police officer, was the offense that caused the trial. Nine witnesses were examined. The evidence shows that the chief and his son pleaded guilty to assault and battery on Skipton. A two-thirds vote of the council was necessary for removal. The charges were not sustained by a vote of four for conviction and five against.

The Oregonian (Portland, OR) May 16, 1899 Page 6
Corvallis Election
Corvallis May 15-
The city election occurred today and was without issues and practically without interest, save to the friends of opposing candidates for chief of police.
For the latter office, James Fiett and C B Wells were the contestants, and much work was done in the interest of each. For mayor, Judge Burnett and Captain Crawford were the candidates. In the south and middle wards there was no opposition for councilman, but in the north ward with two to elect, there were four candidates, H W Hall, J W Wilbanks, Monroe Cameron and Lee Henkle. For the office of police judge there was no contest. The election resulted as follows:
Captain Crawford, mayor; James Fiett, chief of police; William McLagan, treasurer; H W Hall and Lee Henkle, councilmen, north ward; J M Nolan, south ward; James Smith, middle ward; E P Greffos, police judge.

The Oregonian (Portland, OR) April 10, 1901 Page 3
Corvallis
At a meeting of the city council last night, Officer C B Wells turned in his resignation.

Here are some links for Benton CO., history:
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~orbenton/

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~orbentgs/

I hope this helps with your search!
Laura

I'm looking for information on the history of Corvallis. I have family that arrived in Benton County in 1852. C.B. Wells was elected Chief of Police twice in Corvallis. I suspect sometime between 1893 and 1901. He also resided on a farm on Greasy Creek in between 1852 and 1891.

Thank you,
Bobbi

Or check for the Benton County Library.
Nahum and Serepta are well known names of Oregon Pioneers. Definitely check the Benton County Sites. I would even try googling Benton County Oregon, or Nahum and Serepta King.

I've done some research as shown below, but will try to give you some genealogy research tips also. When you post, always try to give a date-of-birth. It is tremendous help for a researcher. If you don't have the exact DOB, try to give at least a year, or information about spouses, parents, children, etc.
--I found your family tree online at Ancestry.com
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/10335387/person/-657423385?ss...=
When you post, you might post the link, that would help the researcher with information...ALSO to learn what you already know.
(I also found three other trees with Charles T. Sands, but little to no information).

------------------Leone Mildred Sands-----------
The Oregon Death Index:
Tracy Wor(truncated, database limited in character space) Johnson, born 17 Oct 1896, died 6 Feb 1985, in Benton Co.
Leone Mildred Johnson, born 14 August 1902, died 20 Mar 1990 in Linn Co.
--The Social Security Death Index shows Leone died March 1990, "Last Residence" Corvallis, Benton County.
------ The "last residence" is not necessarily where a person lived. It could be the address where the Death Benefit was sent, today about $255.00, to a spouse or other person that paid for burial, funeral home/Attorney/etc. It also could be just from a notification of their death. It is not necessarily where they lived, it "usually is; but it is NOT a exact address identifier. A death certificate may have been sent to the Social Security Administration identifying the person died. The Social Security Death Index lists persons that have died whose deaths were reported to the Social Security Administration. The SSA identifies those persons on its Master Death Index. It is NOT the "SSDI". The SSDI is just a name used by purchasers of the MDI, and places that list online by four separate entities. The SSA is not in the business for genealogy research...EXCEPT, they do provide a copy of the original application form (SS-5), or a computer transcript.
The Social Security Death Index lists persons that have died whose deaths were reported to the Social Security Administration.

A family tree posted, having Tracy Worden Johnson:
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/12304045/person/-259919006/co...
No children shown in this online record; but this person "might" have more information offline.

Tracy is buried at Oak Lawn Memorial Park, Corvallis:
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=jo...;
Leone
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=jo...;
Oak Lawn, 2245 S.W. Whiteside Drive, Corvalis, OR 97333 541-753-4532
You might call and ask about records.

----------------Charles & Emma, the other children-------------
Since another of your postings identifies you know of the other three children: Homer, Florence and Virginia, all born in Illinois, you may have other information about this family that you hadn't posted.
--Homer: Since you know Homer died in an airplane crash and you know of his marriage, I'll "assume" you have a "handle" on him. Your other posting just indicated he died at Geisboro Point, never heard of it... But, Bolling Field, Washington D.C. I actually worked there for the US Air Force. It does not have runway's today. I did find the service record, the obit from Fargo and other information on several sources at Ancestry.com. It appears you already have this information.
--Florence: Since you know Florence (Ada Florence) died January 30, 1920, I'll again "assume" you have the handle on her. It appears you are looking for Leone and Virginia, primarily.

The 1930 Census for Fargo, Cass County, ND, census enumerated April 8.
Charles T. Sands (transcribed as Sando), age 64, born in Illinois, to father born (appears to be Kentucky), mother in England, salesman/metal culverts, married 24 years. Owned the home.
Emma, age 64, born Ohio to both parents born in Pennsylvania.
--None of the four children are living with them.

The 1925 North Dakota State Census, Fargo. (Undated).
Charles T 59, Emma Sands 59
Homer I 29, Mary J 29,
Leone M, 22, Virginia R, 20
Elizabeth J 5.

The 1920 Census for Fargo Ward 4, Cass County, ND
Charles T Sands, 53 (1866/1867), born in Illinois to father born in Ohio, mother in England, traveling salesman/"Culvert?"(can't make it out)
Emma, 53 (1866/1867), born in Ohio to both parents born in Pennsylvania.
Homer, 23, (1896/1897), clerk with Standard Oil
Florence, 21 (1898/1899), Clerk in a bank.
Leone, 17, (born 1902/1903)
Virginia, 14 (born 1905/1906)
--All children born in Illinois.
--Census enumerated on 9 January, so by your data, Florence died the end of the month.
--Since the census was enumerated very early in 1920, the year of birth of the family members is "Probably" the earlier year as shown above, unless they were born within the first nine days of January. The 1930 Census showed them at age 64, age increasing by 11 years. So, it "appears" both were born sometime between 9 January and 8 April of 1866.
--The 1910 Census, enumerated 15 April, showed Virginia as being 5, since she was 14 in the 1920 Census enumerated in January; she, also, "appears" to have been born between 9 January and 15 April, in her case 1905.

The World War I Draft Registration Card Image database:
Homer I Sands, born May 24th 1896 in Grove City, IL. Living at 524 14th Street South, Fargo, ND. Present trade/occupation: Student Affiaers(Affairs) Training Camp, US Government, Fort Snelling, Minnesota. He was tall, slender, gray eyes, brown hair. He registered on June 5, 1917, (The first registration, the National Registration Day, a national patriotic party day).

For Virginia, the 1925 census in Fargo has her age 20. The other US Census, appears she was born early months of 1905. The 1925 census also shows her middle initial (at that time) as "R." But, I have seen many cases where the maiden middle initial was dropped for the first initial of the maiden name. I looked in the 1930 Census using various methods; but the census is not transcribed to show place of birth of the person, or the parents. If they were, a search for ANY person born plus/minus 1 year of 1905 in IL., to father born in IL, mother in Ohio, might result in finding her. So, for her, you have North Dakota. I did search the death index for 1920 to 1940, but the marriage index is a pay for service company. Hopefully you can find a local volunteer. It is IMPOSSIBLE to speculate on what happened to her, she married by 1930, went somewhere else either married or single, she died, she otherwise left the family.
--The Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness in Cass County, ND. READ THE GUIDELINES FIRST. http://www.raogk.org/northdak.htm
--In Benton Co, OR, 1 Volunteer: http://www.raogk.org/oregon.htm
--Cemeteries. I did look in the www.findagrave.com for Virginia Sands in ND and Oregon, without success. There are several websites for cemetery transcriptions; but most are incomplete, not transcribed. Even those that are have missing graves, missing stones, unreadible, etc. Example, Benton County: http://www.usgwtombstones.org/oregon/benton.htm

Hope this helped,
Ron Bestrom

Hi Sharon,
The most recent Census that is available to the public at this time is the 1930 U. S. Census. After 1930 it is much more difficult to find information about people.

I suggest you request copies of their obituaries. Charlies died 22 Oct 1958 and Emma died 13 Sept. 1951. I hope you know the exact death dates for Leona and Tracy because I didn't find them.

You can request obituaries from Random Acts Genealogical Kindness. Go to www.raogk.org, read instructions, choose Oregon, Benton County.

If that doesn't work, you can contact the Oregon Libraries, www.oregonlibraries.net/ and ask which Library in Benton Co. provides an obituary service.

The Benton County Genealogical Society might have the Benton County Directories too. Go to www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~orbentgs/ . Successful Searching!

I am trying to locate information on Charles T Sands and his wife Emma. Charles was born in Illinois in 1867, they left Illinois in 1912 and moved to North Dakota. They left North Dakota sometime after 1930 and moved on to Oregon. They both died in Benton Co, Oregon, Charles in 1958 and Emma in 1951. They had a daughter Leone who was married to a Tracy Worden Johnson and they both died in Benton Co., Oregon Leone in 1990 and Tracy in 1985.

I do not know if Leone and Tracy had any children.

Any help would be appreciated.
Sharon

Clifford S. Walker, Washington and Oregon

Clifford S. Walker lived in Pierce and Lewis Counties in Washington, then in Philomath, Benton County, OR, where he died in 1948. I believe that Clifford fathered a child in 1906 in Pierce County, WA that was later adopted by Arthur Simmons. That child would be my father. If anyone has any knowlege of these happenings back then, I would appreciate any help in learning of my own background. It was a long time ago, but I have spent many years searching for the true facts. Any help would be appreciated------------Phyllis Evans
