A bit of background research first, you may have this, but I didn't and needed it for the research on Esther.

Alvar died in Washington State in Wahkaikum County, WA on 23 Oct 1993. The Social Security Death Index shows his "last residence" as Clatskanie, Columbia County, OR. But, like many listed with "last residence" that may not be where he was actually living.

The World War I Draft Registration Card Image Database
Peter Hukkanen, age 32, born Dec 20, 1885, living in Toledo, Lewis County, Washington. He was a naturalized US citizen. Farmer. Nearest relative was Lizzy Hukkanen. He was medium in height, stout build, gray eyes and light colored hair. He registered as required on Sept 12, 1918, based on his age. (Note: I have found the year of birth off by one year in a large percentage of cases).

The 1920 Census for Salmon Creek, Lewis County, WA, enumerated 5-7 January 1920.
Hukkanen (transcribed as "Hubkanen")
Peter, age 37, born in Finland, immigrated 1913, dairy farmer
Lizzie, 28, born in Finland, imm 1913
Alvar, 7
Esther 5 (1914/1915 since census was enumerated in January, she was already 5, probably born in 1914), both children born in Montana
Bollar, Henry 30 and Knut? 33, brothers-in-law

I find an Esther Hukkanen in the Polk City Directory for Portland, 1943/1944 edition living at 20 NW 16th Ave, Apt 7.
--In the 1940 edition, she was a book binder for the Metropolitan Printing Co, living at 2136 NW Johnson, Apt 204.

For the names given by the other "poster".
Public phone records show a Donald G. Stangland, born February 1921 had lived at:
1929 Grand Prairie Rd SE, Albany, OR 97321
--Also here was an Edith A. Stangland, born May 1923
15980 Woodland Dr, LaPine, OR
--Also here was Edith A.
22 Wahanna Rd, Seaside, OR
--Also here was Edith A. identified as being born in May 1923.
-----So, This Donald was married to an Edith A. Stangland. So either the wrong person, or if he is the correct Donald, he and Esther had divorced.

A Don Stangland lived at:
1211 Trenton Ave, Bend, Oregon.
--Also same address was a Jackie, born 1940.
So, it appears this Don Stangland whose death was noted in the other posting is also the wrong person, again, unless he and Esther had divorced. But this person was born in 1932.

The Washington Archives:
http://www.digitalarchives.wa.gov/default.aspx
Has an image for an Esther H (Hukkanen?) Stangland, born September 19, 1914, marriage to a Lewis Cutler Hurlbutt, born Nov 13, 1907. The marriage was on Jan 30th, 1964, in Vancouver, Clark County, WA. Lewis was from Washington County, Oregon; Esther was in Multnomah County (Portland) Oregon.
- for the image, enter "Esther" and "Stangland", click on the marriages, then on the names.
--The Social Security Death Index shows Esther H. Hurlbutt, born 19 Sep 1914, died 1 Sep 1999, last residence in Beaverton, Washington County, Oregon. Beaverton is just west of the city limits of Portland.
--Address records identified an Esther H. Hurlbutt, born Sep 1914 had lived at 100 SW 195th Trir Ave, #170, Beaverton, OR.
-*-While the name and age of birth matches the search criteria, there is no proof this is the correct Esther Hukkanen. Additional information must be obtained for proof.

Ron Bestrom

Hi,
It's not just as easy as a "lookup". The most recent Census viewable to the public was the 1930 census. Finding anything about 1930 is more difficult.

For Alvar, I recommend you request a copy of his obituary. There is a Random Acts Genealogical Kindness volunteer, Jan, who looks up obituaries. She can be reached through RAOGK, www.raogk.org, read instructions, choose Oregon, choose Columbia County.

I didn't find anything for Esther Stangland and she might still be alive.

There are two different Donald Stangland's who died in the 2000's. Donald Stangland b. 16 Feb 1932, Last REsidence=Bend, Deschutes Co., d. 18 June 2001. Use RAOGK again and the Deschutes County contact for obits is Nick.

Donald G. Stangland b. 1921, d. 8 March 2002, Seaside, Clapsop Co. Contact the Oregon Library System www.oregonlibraries.net/ and ask them which Library in Clapsop Co. provides an obituary serivce.

If none do, contact the University of Oregon, http://libweb.uoregon.edu/general/gethelp.html and ask for the obituary, however, there will be a fee.

If none of this works, post a message on the Hukkanen and Stangland Message Boards. If they don't exisit, ask to have them created. They are unique surnames and maybe you'll meet other relatives there. Successful Searching!

I agree that Elizabeth could have married in Iowa or I considered she may have died on the trail west.
I did find Henry Williams from your suggestions on him and found that he married to Theodocia Harper, sister to the Nancy Ellen Harper who m.
Thank you Ron for the additional contacts. I agree I should have been more specific in my request. I should have said that I would like to correspond with anyone researching this Harkleroad family. I do have census and various vital records available from Oregon and Washington on these people. I hope to find a descendant researching this family who has the information on Susannah and what her maiden name was.

Thanks to Judy Artley's further information, (sent in answer to another post) on Susanna's son Henry Williams, by her #2 marriage to Posey Williams, I did then find that Henry married to Theodosia Harper, sister to William Ernest Harkleroad's wife Nancy Ellen Harper.

Thanks again,
Pam Smith
Dallas, OR

I started this search not having heard of this surname before; but there are hundreds having this name.

Your posting and number of postings (back at least to 1998) indicate you have a good background in at least basic genealogy methods and research. You indicated you had found this family in the 1850 census and others, so, I don't feel a census by census review and posting would be beneficial... You probably have already done that. There appears to be a LOT of information on this family available at least through the census, and also post census through various other sites. Finding information is not difficult; but time consuming...especially when you may already have much of the "Ancestry" data.

You might wish to repost specifically on individual persons that are brickwalls rather than WHOLE family requests.

I did write up the below as initial search findings:

4. John Wesley Harkleroad
-A family tree by Scottsplaceach@comcast.net shows his marriage to Zerilda J. VanCleave (1855-1922) and one daughter Margaret Z. Harkelroad born 1880 died 1965, both in Oregon. Margaret married Charles Leon Hartley and had four sons and three daughters.
-A family tree posted by Purplepanther3 showed some of the information as presented by the above. I sent a contact request for this person to view this thread.
--A family tree posted by o0skypilot0o has a daughter Bertha Jane born May 18, 1883, died 05 March 1945 in Douglas, Oregon. She married a Sesostras Oscar Martin 1879 to 1945 and had four sons and seven daughters. I sent a contract request for this person to view this thread.

Perhaps one of those three has more information on THIS decendency.

Ron Bestrom

Could you look up Vernonia, Columbia county, Oregon records - from abt 1870 through 1950 - for my Baker ancestors:

David Frank Baker, born Dec 1841 in Indiana, married to Drusilla (VanBlaricom), 2 sons, 1st Postmaster of Vernonia in 1878, 1900 census information shows wife Drusilla living in Vernonia with son Albert while David Frank Baker is living in Portland with Drusilla's brother, John W VanBlaricom. That 1900 census information lists them as still married, with David's occupation listed as a carpenter. I have no information on either of them after this date. Any death information would help break my brick wall.

Their sons:
John D Baker, born abt 1870 in Minnesota, married to Nellie Morris in Columbia county after 1900, no known children, possible death date 28 Sep 1942 in Columbia county, Oregon.
Albert LeRoy Baker, born 29 Jun 1871 in Utah Territory, married to Lida Anna Early 30 Jun 1907 in Vernonia, 6 children, lived in both Columbia county and Yamhill county, divorced in 1922 in Yamhill county, death date 4 Oct 1929. Buried in Yamhill county.
I believe John D and Nellie Baker stayed in Columbia county, while Albert and Lida moved to Yamhill county after 1910.
Any information you can find will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

Susanne:

The City Directory for Vernonia is your BEST bet. Secondary would be the published phone books. A LOCAL researcher would be the best help. The Random Acts of genealogical Kindness has LOCAL researchers that could help:
(Set for Columbia County:)
http://www.raogk.com/oregon.htm
Jan does Public Records (recorder/assessor/auditor), which are different than City directories (library), but give it a try.

As given by the other "person"
> Also the County Assessor's office should be able to look up an address and tell you when your parents lived there.

THAT IS WRONG ! The County Assessor might have records on who OWNED a property, but NOT who lived there. There are NO records for Rentals in the County Records.

(Judy...this is another example of misleading a person researching to a wrong lead. You MUST understand how government works before suggesting these leads).

Ron Bestrom

My parents, Roy & Jean Zimmerdahl, lived in Vernonia during the 1930s and early 1940s. I am trying to locate where they resided during that time period. I do know that they owned a house at 291 A Street but I'm not sure of the dates. When they first moved to Vernonia in 1929 or early 1930s, they briefly rented an apartment(?) near and across the road from the elementary school. They, at some time, also rented a home up on Corey Hill and in Riverview (which they referred to as Carl's place). Are there city directories that might help in my search? If so where are they located? Any suggestions would be appreciated!
Susanne (Zimmerdahl) Brown

Let me add/correct information given by the other "researcher".

> On June 5 1917 or 1918 Thomas McDaniel filled out his
> World War I Draft Reg Card

Explanation:
On 6 April 1917, the US entered into World War I.

There were three draft registrations dates:
-5 June 1917 for all men between the ages of twenty-one and thirty-one.
>>>>Since Thomas was born in 1888, he would have been 28 in the time of this first draft registration; therefore he probably registered in this first one. It was known as National Registration Day, a National Holiday, celebrated across the nation. His registration was typed, somewhat rare, but his signature is written. A copy of the image of the draft registration is available.
-5 June 1918, men who had reached age twenty-one since the first registration (Also included in this registration was a supplemental registration of 24 August 1918 for those men reaching age twenty-one after 5 June 1918.)
-12 September 1918, men ages eighteen through forty-five were required to register. This means that we have genealogical data on virtually every man around 98%) born between 13 September 1872 and 12 September 1900, if he was
living in the United States during World War I.

> He was a farmer, proprietor, Vernonia

His occupation was farmer. He was employed by "Proprietor". This does not mean he was the proprietor, but he was employed by the proprietor. He may have been working for someone else. You CAN NOT ASSUME in genealogy research.

>correcting the 1900 Census errors

"Lil" McDaniel was listed as 13, her birthdate was Sept 1886, NOT 1888.
Nelly Wiles, born August 1880 was listed as "Wd" for Widow, NOT "married".
Lulu May Wiles, born Oct 1899 would be the daughter of Nelly, born in Illinois to both parents born in Illinois.

The 1910 Census for Leech, Wayne County, Illinois
Henery (as written and transcribed) Wiles, age 35, born in Illinois, farm laborer, married 13 years.
Nellie, age 29, born in Illinois to both parents born in IL, mother of 5, all living
L. May, daughter, age 11, born in IL
?. Carrie, daughter age 9, born in IL
B. Ciara?, dau age 6
L. Lola, age 4
L. Lena, age 2
--The 1900 showed Nellie as "widow", but back in those census years, if a woman was separated or divorced, she often was identified as being a widow.
Hello
I used to live in the Clatskanie area and Doc George was my doctor when I was a kid. He passed away several years ago but still has family in the area. There is only one cemetary in Clatskanie and I would call the city hall and they should be able to put you in contact. You might also try Haakinson-Groix funeral home at 503-728-2323. If they handled the buriel they may have records.
