Just adding to my information:

Looking for emmigration and parents of Sandquist brothers born 1847-1857

On the 1875 Nessel, Chisago Co, Minnesota Census, is Charles Sandquist age 27, John Sandquist age 25, and Adolf Sandquist age 18. They are listed in the same household as Gustaf Dindof age 39, Jennie(Johannah) Dindof age 51, and Louise Dindof age 11. In other census' I've seen the Dindof's as Landell, Lando, and Lindo. I am unsure which is correct. I think there could be a relation. The Sandquist's and Dindof's are neighbors from 1875 to 1910.

I have found a family tree with Charles M Sanquist born 1847 in Växjö, Kronoberg, Sweden. He married Emma Petterson. She was born 1865. Their children: Adolph 1882,Godfrey 1882, Adolph G 1884, Edward 1885, Carl Edward 1887, Cornelius 1888, John 1888, Hannah 1889, Lydia 1891, and Hulda Elizabeth 1894-1939.

I have also found a family tree with John Sandquist born 1849 Sandvik, Småland, Sweden. He married Helena Jonasdotter Petterson born 1859. Their children: Willhelm 1881, Anna C 1884, Adolph G 1885, Selma M 1887, Carl Bernhard 1891, Eddie W 1897, and Elmer 1900.

I also have Jonas/Jonsh Adolph Sandquist born 1857. He married Betsey Kardell(Brita Ersdotter Kardell). Their children: Hannah 1890–1963, Elmer 1892, Agnes Mary 1894–1981, Carl Adolph 1896–1986, Bessie Lou 1898–1987, Ruth Elinor 1902–1993, Reuben Elmer 1902–1929.

I am trying to find out where and when the Sandquist's(especially Jonas Adolph, he is my great-grandfather) emmigrated to Minnesota from Sweden. On various census reports they list 1868 and 1869. I am also looking for any information about their parents. Is it possible that Jennie(Johanna) is their mother and Gustaf is their step-father?

If anyone has a link to this family, or can find out any information prior to 1875 I'd appreciate it.

Thanks,
Gynelle

Hi Nancy,
Reedsport is located in Douglas County but Coos County is adjacent on the Oregon Coast.

You can request an obituary from Random Acts Genealogical Kindness. When you find the web site (can't list web address because of RootsWeb's rules), click on Oregon, click on Coos County and choose one volunteer.

He might not have had an obituary. The other curious thing is I couldn't find anything in the Censuses for Frank or Helen Victoria. Maybe they married after 1930. Successful Searching!

Re: Tips for Researching Coos?

As in looking for a person ANYWHERE, the story is the same.

Do NOT pay for research, or offer to pay for research the minute out of the shoot. There are many Historical Societies and Museums out there that do excellent work when it comes to obtaining artifacts, information, manuscripts, etc. AND, most that work for them do a great job in research... but you NEVER know. I've seen Society members that couldn't find their own mother in a local phone book. I've helped a few people by doing some research, only to find they had paid someone to find information and had gotten nothing. I've also found some research that was TOTALLY BOGUS. I've been doing research since about 1976 on my own family, helping others for about 12 years (Mostly Scandinavian, Washington and Oregon). I've also done damage control by reviewing "findings" and trying to FIX fantastic mistakes made.

Doing your OWN work is first, the most rewarding; second, the most accurate. Always start with the closest family member, then work back. Interview older generations, get their dates of birth, places, where they lived, what they knew of grandpa. AND DO IT NOW, 10 years from now it might be too late. Your own local library might offer Ancestry.com or Heritage Quest.com FREE via your library card (I use Heritage Quest at home) The Internet has dozens of FREE sites. Use google, or my favorite http://www.alltheweb.com/advanced?cs=utf-8 Put in EXACT phrase of "Coos County" then in Words or Word filters, add Genealogy. This works for newspapers for cities, etc.
The LOCAL researchers are the BEST. Those willing to help for free are great, but again, VERIFY everything.

If YOU don't want to research, the very best way to start? Post a message. CLEARLY identify the person/family you seek by name, dates of birth, death, where they lived in an area, etc. If you don't have the DOB/DOD, etc. Give as much approximate as you can... "Grandpa was born in the early 1900's to John and Mary Kettle in Coos County, siblings were Donna and Fred." Do not give a bunch of non-verifiable information, he loved bananna's.

Then after you post, aa GOOD researcher will give you not only information; but also WHERE and HOW they found it. If a family only lived in an area for a few years, they might not be found in the US Census; but they should have left a footprint, a listing in the City Directories, purchase of a land patent under the Homestead Act.

I can not BEGIN to give you links I use to find people, AFTER attempting to get a bulk out of Ancestry.com. There is SO MUCH basic information available, even before going down to obtaining birth certificates, etc. I refuse to give links for societies. To order vital records:
http://www.oregon.gov/DHS/ph/chs/order/faqs.shtml

So, start by posting a good post. Get the basics. THEN use the local Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness people for cemetery photo's, etc. As you can see, from Coos Co, that is primarily what they do: http://www.raogk.org/oregon.htm
Again, I'd stay away from FEE BASED organizations. Posting FEE BASED links are against Rootsweb/GenForum/Ancestry.com policy.

Ron Bestrom

I apologize for not giving much info, I really don't have much. What I do know is yes it would be the Coquille area. Linda lived in the Coquille\Bandon area. My half-sister Coweta does not know exactly who her father is just that it's an Arnett or Morgan. That is all our mother Linda Puffer will say. Linda would tell Coweta she "acted just like Geneve Modaff" with contempt in her voice. Somewhere in all this a Donald Morgan is mentioned with no particular idea of who he is. Also my Aunt Samuella Puffer was married to Clarence Arnett and had a daughter Cynthia Jane. My aunt Edwina Puffer was married to Edward Arnett and had Barbara June.

Blanche Alice Crockett was born 28 September 1904 in Belle Fourche, South Dakota, per an obituary index at:
http://www.orgenweb.org/coos/82index.htm#c
To request it:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~obitl/
Belle Fourche is in Butte County, SD

Had she been born in Oregon, she was born about 105 years ago, so the 100 year limit was not applicable. For a Death Certificate, it is a 50 year time-frame; BUT, there are exclusions:
http://www.oregon.gov/DHS/ph/chs/order/faqs.shtml#orderwho

Her Social Security Number was 542-12-9699. Her application for this number would show her maiden name. You can obtain an photocopy image of it, or a computer extract. For ordering, go to:
http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/fto_ssdisearch.html?Wel...
Enter her SSN #, as 542129699, search, on the next window press "write-it", the form will identify the cost. If an obit identifies her maiden name, you may wish to not order this. The form would show:

His SSN was 520-09-5279 issued in Wyoming before 1951. HOWEVER, he might not have been living in Wyoming at the time. After his birth, his younger siblings were born in Colorado.

The 1910 Census has David V and his parents living at Snake River, Carbon Co, WY. It identifies he was 8/12 in age. The census was enumerated the 7th day of May. So he was born about August 1909. That has proved correct for his birth on August 16. But, the enumerator, or the person providing the information may have erred and his age of 1 year was not identified.

Davy V. Crockett, born 1908 in Wyoming, enlisted on 18 April 1942 in Coos County, Oregon. He was married, but it doesn't identify the name of his wife. He was 65 inches in height, 133 pounds.

I did a bunch of searches in the US Census for potential's matching the criteria of Blanche, Alice, 1904, South Dakota, on Ancestry. I searched for her birth on the birth records for SD. I even looked for no name, with the years from 1903 to 1907. The SD Birth Index indicated if a person wasn't found, a birth certificate wasn't provided to the State, and the records before 1905 were not complete. You would probably be searching in Butte County, versus the State records. She also could have been adopted after birth and her name changed. I did search for that potential looking at several names found in the birth records, then looking for them in the US Census. I guess the obit is your first hope on at least her maiden name.

I also did some searches in an attempt to find their marriage, without success.

Bout all I kin do...

Ron Bestrom
Tacoma, WA

Hi,
The volunteers at Random Acts Genealogical Kindness will look an obituary. Go to www.raogk.org, read guidelines, choose Oregon, choose Coos Bay and choose one volunteer.

You won't be able to obtain a copy of a birth cert in Oregon until 100 years after the person was born. Hopefully their survivors will be listed in the obit. After I receive an obit and find survivors, I use www.whitepages, www.zabasearch.com or Google the name to find more current contact info.

Tips for Researching Coos?

Hello,
It is time to direct my search focus to Coos County, where my grandfather was born, greats lived and died, etc. I would like to obtain death certs (which several I can order from the State), photos of gravestones, obituaries, and so on. I'm looking for advice on the best way to pursue this in Coos County. Each County's resources are different. I'd like to come do it all myself but can't at this time. I'll take any help I can get and also willing to pay for time and effort. I have some research in Douglas Co. also.
Thank you very much. to reply directly is robinsayre@cox.net
Robin
The 1930 Census for Newport, Coos County, OR
Augustus Hoffman, age 23, Owned the property, machinest (I couldn't immediately identify the company so didn't pursue), born in Oregon to father born in Ohio, mother in Oregon
Leafa M, wife, 23born in Kansas to father born in Ohio, mother in Kansas.
They owned a property at 1264 South 10th Street.

But, as far as the Grocery, it first depends on where you found your information and how it was structured. I'd AGAIN suggest the volunteer in Coos County, at the RAOGK.

Ron Bestrom

That sounds like a listing from a City Directory (Polks).

But, you need LOCAL assistance. The other "links" may charge research fees...if they have any information at all.

A local research volunteer can be found at the Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness. Read the guidelines first:
http://www.raogk.org/oregon.htm Trish Neal is "probably" the best to start.

When people ask questions in "genealogy", most answers are not found when it comes to information found in census, or other "family" resources. Other genealogy records DO include business records. Most States have a State requirement to get a business license and also conform to tax requirements. The State Department of Licensing and the State Department of Revenue (taxes) "MAY" have license information. BUT, first, are they required to have archives back to this period. Second, do they do the research, what is the charge? The names of the State organizations may be different in each state. BUT, do attempt to make contact. Superior Court (Circuit Courts/District Courts in some States) are REQUIRED to keep records. The State Agencies probably are also. They could add that special tough to information on families.

FIGHT FOR PUBLIC RECORD ACCESSIBILITY.

Ron Bestrom

Re: Benjamin Klinger, Salem Oregon, Family

I'm posting to identify some speculation/guesses by the other "poster" and also other information to help other volunteer researchers/or family find your requested information.

First, when you post, it is very important to identify Dates of Birth/Death, if you have them. It greatly helps a researcher get past the initial search. I found your family tree online:
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/10572840/person/-538533888?ss...=
also:
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/12468299/person/-242993359?ss...=
It is well done and has the basic info needed to begin searches...ALSO, it identifies what information you have already found and what you have done. Ben born 18 June 1876, died 11 May 1948 in Marion County, OR. Your posted Death Certificate shows he had lived at 237 Richmond Ave and had been living in the community for 12 years (1935/1936). His wife was identified as Eleanor Klinger, age "Unk" (this shows also that Eleanor was not the Informant). The Informant was identified as William H. Klinger, Vancouver, WN. Per your tree/tombstone, he is buried at Belcrest Memorial Park, Salem, OR.
---www.findagrave.com has the cemetery online and listings for 2,651 interments; but, his name doesn't come up.

Michigan Birth Index 1867-1902
Lenora Klinger, bon 30 July 1900, in Bangor, Van Bren County, Michigan. Father Benjamin Klinger born in Michigan, mother Nellie Klinger, born in Kansas.

The 1910 Census for Clay Center Township, Clay County, Kansas, enumerated the 5th day of May, 1910.
The handwriting is very difficult to read on Ancestry.com, so I also looked at the image on Heritage Quest. A bit better, but...
Benjamin H, age 33, M1(marriage first), born in Michigan to both parents born in Ohio. employed as "Sec Fireman" for the "CRI PRR". Employment is as best I could read on the image, "Sec", if read correctly probably refers to "Section", the "PRR" may refer to the Pennsylvania Rail Road. If so, a Section was an area breakdown on the Railroad system.
Nellie G, age 35? (age could also be 38), born Kansas to both parents born in Pennsylvania
Lloyd N, 9
Leona N, 9, listed a female/daughter.
Lefa W, 3
William H. age 1 x/12. The actual month of age is NOT readible. If it "was" 4/12 as written by the other "poster", he would have been born about January based on the census enumeration being done on May 5. So, "if" the William H. Klinger found by the other "poster" was the same person, and he did die on 24 Nov 1997, and had a DOB of 22 July 1908, the "4/12" would be wrong, it would have to be "8/12" or 9/12". Since your family tree has this person as being the correct person, found probably by the other "poster", then the "4/12" can not be correct.

The World War I Draft Registration Card Image Database held an image for the registration of Benjamin... I sent a copy of the image directly.
It shows: Benjamin Franklin Klinger, living in Woodburn, Marion County, Oregon. He was born on June 18, 1877. (The year of birth "may" be correct; however, I find about half are one year off. Possibly due to the required registrations. You identified his birth as being in 1876. So, with the one year error, 1876 is probably correct). He wasa plumber for the SP Ry. Co, in Brooklyn, Multnomah Co. OR. His wife was Nellie G. Klinger. He was medium in height and build, gray eyes and dark hair. He had no physical disqualifications. He registered on 9/7/1918.
--There were 3 draft registrations, 5 June 1917, 5 June 1918, and 12 Sep 1918. (Also a supplemental on 24 August 1918 for those reaching 21 between 5 June 1918 and 24 August 1918). Born in 1877(6), he would have been required to register based on his age on 12 Sep 1918. Why he registered on 7 Sep 1918 is unknown.
--This registration also shows he was married to Nellie on the date of registration, 7 Sep 1918.

The 1920 Census for East Woodburn, Marion County, on Garr Street, enumerated on 19 January 1920.
Bingan (as transcribed) Klinger, 44, born in Michigan to both parents born in Iowa
Clarine (as transcribed) N. Klinger, 47, born in Kansas to both parents born in Pennsylvania.
Lloyd 19, born Michigan
Leona 19, born Michigan, listed as Female/Daughter.
Leaifa 13, born Kansas
Billy H, 11, born Kansas
--The handwriting on this census page is very difficult to read. The person transcribing the page identified the wife as "Clarine" N. The other "poster" wrote it was "Eleanor N", then wrote in parathesis "Nellie". It can't be both. It doesn't appear to be Eleanor, as this person was born in Kansas to both parents born in Pennsylvania, which hold true to Nellie in the other census.
--Also note the 1910 and 1920 Census show the twins as Lloyd (male) and Leona (female). Your family tree shows Leona as being a male.

I could not locate Benjamin in the 1930 Census. This occurs due to several factors: I just didn't find it; he was missed by enumerators due to his house not found, he didn't respond due to being away, the transcription was so very wrong I didn't find it. Or, the page upon which he would have been found was not imaged, or missing, or unreadible. I did a number of searches by first name only, initials only, last name only, etc. etc.

The 1930 Census for Marshfield, Coos County, OR, renting at 1095 South Second Street for $30.00. Enumerated April 19th.
Hiram Stinson, born in "Minisota" to father born in MN, mother in Illinois, sawyer at a veneer factory.
Leona M., born Michigan to father born MI, mother in Kansas
Norman E, 8 (born 1922/1923) in Oregon.
Nellie G, 56, Mother-in-Law, born Kansas to both parents born in Pennsylvania. She is shown as being Married. She is also shown as Owning this residence, valued at $3,000.00. So, it appears the Stinson's are renting from Nellie.
William H, Brother-in-Law, 21. Since the census was enumerated in April, William would turn 22 in July.
--Nellie shown being married. I have found a number of women listed in the census that have identified themselves as being married, when it fact they had been divorced. But, this may or may not be true in this case.
-- A Norman E. Stinson, died 13 Dec 1996, born 11 July 1921 in Douglas County, Oregon. Spouse "Aletha". After finding this, I looked for family trees having his name, and found you had a THIRD tree, which had this name:
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/12468299/person/-228327300?ss...=
www.zabasearch.com shows an Aleta M. Stinson, born 1921 in Florence, OR, full address and phone.

--------Eleanor-------
Since you didn't identify any DOB/DOD/ etc. about this person, I had to do some research, which lead to the 4th of your family tree's:
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/10572840/person/-598893921
It shows she was born in Oct 1888 as Elsie Madeline McPherson in Minnesota. Her parents were John McPherson 1853-1910; and Ellen M. O'Casey 1864-1950. She married Charles Harry Judkins Nov 1906, and died 21 July 1948 in Salem, Marion County, OR.
I found another person having them in their tree:
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/10846036/person/-568941238?ss...=
The owner "aldelve" may or may not have additional information.
My search for the cemetery info above for Benjamin was to determine if Eleanor was buried next to him. Perhaps you may know. Since she died in July 1948, just a couple of months AFTER him, my question would be, where was she when he died. She was not the Informant, why? Was she incapacitated by age, physical/mental, that she wasn't present? William didn't know when she was born, did that indicate he wasn't close? He was living with "mom" in 1930, did the family close connections to Benjamin?
--A review of the City Directories for Salem could result in finding Benjamin and Elsie M, living together, or living apart. The City Directories are a Yearly published listing of persons living in a populated area, alphabetically, with spouse in parenthesis, followed by employment type, sometimes employer, and address. I'd request this search by Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness:
http://www.raogk.org/oregon3.htm Set for Marion County. One does probates also. READ THE GUIDELINES FIRST.

For marriages/deaths/divorces in Oregon:
http://www.oregon.gov/DHS/ph/chs/order/faqs.shtml
--there is a state restriction to receipt, but the 50 year restriction is far gone for divorce or death. You would have to obtain local information on the date, probably through the RAOGK

--------Canadian Connection---------
--Charles Harry Judkins died 3 July 1945 in Alexandria, British Columbia, Canada.
--Son, Harold Chester Judkins, born 1912, died 30 August 1994, in Penticton, BC.
--I searched the online data for BC at:
http://search.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/sn-371FAA4/gbsearch/Death...
Harry Charles Death is found, death on 21 July.

Ron Bestrom
Thank you for clarifying that term for me. The connection between the Judkins family is that I found my great aunt, Eleanor (Elsie) McPherson Judkins was married to Benjamin Klinger in 1932. Benjamin was married to Nellie. I have not found divorce records for either marriages but it is the only conclusion I have come up with. When you stated that you search all records feature, and that it automatically searches for that surname in the directories, do you just use the surname? If you would not mind being a tutor, could you email me at donnastenger1@comcast.net. I promise not to over load you with questions, just tips. I enjoy the search and the discovery and like to do it myself but I would love some tips along the way.

Hi Donna,
The trnmn SPCo is trainman Southern Pacific Co.

I used Ancestry.com and searched every name on the Census pages that appeared. Searching for all family members often leads me to other family members.

When you use Ancestry Search All Records feature, it automatically searches for that surname in the applicable Directories.

Also I've been doing this type of research for more than 10 years now, take classes, and belong to my local genealogy society so I'm constantly learning new tips. However, I don't think this is a total success because I still don't understand the tie to the Judkins family unless Nellie was married between 1893 and 1900 to Judkins.

Does anyone have any information on ‘Red’s Grocery’ in Marshfield? The address I have found in a few directory listings, the last one being in 1940, is 1264 10th St. The listing is under Augustus W. Hoffman (Leafa M.). The listing is under Augustus’ name with ‘Red’s Grocery’ in parenthesis so I am not sure if this was the address of the store or the home of Augustus and Leafa Hoffman. Any help would be appreciated.

Searching for the grave of Robert Gilmore McQuigg, Jr. b. 10/18/1830 Lawrence Co., TN d. 6/12/1908 Bandon, Coos Co., OR.

I had been told that he is buried in the Masonic Cemetery in Coquille, but that does not seem to be the case or there is no listing for him in that cemetery. Since there is also a I.O.O.F. cemetery in Bandon, I'm trying to learn if he might be buried there instead.

His second wife, Martha Alice Clark (3/9/1858 - 5/10/1918)
I would like to discover if she is buried with him as well.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Tom

The marriage records for Illinios show a Peter marrying a Martha Yoacum Jul 12 1847 in Menard Co IL. It also shows another marriage for a Peter to Elizabeth Johnson in Sangamon Co IL Sept 29 1831. There is a six year perio9d between Tmomas and Nancy which would fit with his marriage to Martha Yoacum 1847. Alla/Allah was born Oct 6 1829 according to her death certificate here in Missouri. I would be okay with her mother being the Elizabeth Johnson married to a Peter in 1831, marriage by shotgun? I found a marriage for a Edward Laswell in Douglas Co OR to Agnes Dugger August 3 1908. Our Edward don't know more work needs to be done on it. Need to check on Elizabeth Johnson also. Thanks for the information you sent.

Leon

Hi Leon,
I first found the marriage info for Peter Lasswell, born KY, 1811 married Martha [no last name] who was born 1819 married 1832.
Hi, I'm wondering if you knew/know them? I searched google with no luck. Did find a phone number and address in Lowell, OR but they are no longer valid. Called AT&T information for Springfield with no luck. Plan on traveling to Oregon from California the week of July 13th and will be going to county court houses along the way. She had 6 siblings and we are still attempting to locate 3 of them. Plan to travel to Myrtle Point as there seems to be numerous "Weekly" families living there. Any more clues would be great. Thanks!
