Hello Josh. Good to hear from you. My interest in the HAMBLOCK Family is how they arrived in Oregon and the year they arrived. There's a reasonable probability that the LETTs, who had a stock ranch in Colusa Co., CA, may have traveled to the West with the HAMBLOCK's. Thanks, Grandma Cookie.

Hello Deni,
After some searching, I have been able to find the information I needed. In answer to your question, there is a connection to the Fry family. My g g grandfather was James M. Fry married to Eliza, a Karoak(sic) indian. He was the brother of Abraham Fry. If you can find a copy, get the book Ilahe, Settling the Rogue River Valley by Kay Atwood. I got my copy from Amazon. It has a great deal of information plus some very good pictures.
Please feel free to view my public tree, The Rhodes/Perkins Family Tree. If you would like further contact, I am at llmayat29@yahoo.com.

Hope to hear from you again.

Loretta

My g grandfather was Henry Frye who was born in Illahe abt 1872 and I believe his father to be Jacob Fry. My grandmother was Henry's daughter Florence Luzana Frye. Was wondering if perhaps there is a connection? I also found an Ellen Fry who was post mistress at Illahe abt 1902.

I looked in the online archives of the Curry County Recorder, Gold Beach, without success.

The Social Security Death Index shows his "last residence" at Gold Beach; but, the "last residence" in the SSDI is not always where a person died. It is sometimes the location where a final payment, the death payment (about $255.00) is sent to a surviving spouse.

I would suggest contacting one of the family members as identified in the below:

His wife's obit was published in the Curry Coastal Pilot on October 27, 2007:

Vivian Eithel Garrett
Vivian Eithel Garrett, 86, of Gold Beach, died Oct. 24, 2007, in a local care facility in Brookings of natural causes.
She was born July 3, 1921, at Aberdeen, Wash., to Charles P. and Eithel L. Baker Bixler.
She was raised in Washington and Oregon, with short says in California. Her career involved elevator operation for Myers and Frank in Portland during World War II.
She married three times. Her first husband was Robert J. Paulsen. She owned a bar in Seaside with her second husband, John Pilkenton, then she managed the Cobra Garden in Gearheart, and the Penny Arcade in Seaside with her third husband, Eddie Garrett.
She worked as a PBX operator for several answering services in California. One of her passions in life was traveling with Mr. Garrett around the country on their Harley Davidson motorcycle.
She joined the Women of the Moose in the early 1960s in Seaside, and rejoined in Santa Monica in 1971. She moved her membership to El Monte, then to Lake Isabel. While in Lake Isabel she worked her way through the chairs and received her College of Regents degree in 1990.
Vivian and Eddie moved from Lake Isabel, Calif., to Gold Beach in 1991. Since their move to Gold Beach they were very active in the Gold Beach Moose Lodge and she earned her Red Stole in 1993.
She is survived by daughters Nancy Ross of Enumclaw, Wash., Janet and her husband Ed Cole of Nikiski, Alaska, and Barbara Jorge and her significant other Randy Waters of Gold Beach; stepdaughters Shirley and her husband George Brugh of Astoria, and Patricia Garrett; grandsons Kevin, Tracy, Pete (Arval, Jr.), Gerry, Andy, and George III; nine granddaughters, Teresa, Kristine, Dawn, Cynthia, Patricia, Susan, Julie, Robin, and Joanna; and many great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were husbands Robert J. Paulsen, John Pilkenton, Eddie Garrett; grandson Kerry.
A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28, 2007, at the Gold Beach Moose Lodge on Leith Road. Private family burial services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2007, at River View Cemetery in Portland.
Memorial donations may be made to the Moose Lodge, Chapter 1963, PO Box 977, Gold Beach, OR 97444
Arrangements are under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel.

Ron Bestrom
Tacoma, WA

"Oregon Geographic Names" sixth editionpage 636:
OPHIR Curry;
The name Ophir occurs in the bible, and refers to a region celebrated for its proverbially fine gold. Efforts to localize the place have not been successful. The compiler has not been able to learn who named the place on Euchre creek in curry county, or when the names was applied, but the word is said to have chosen because of the fine gold in the black beach sands nearby. Ophir post office was established on the Curry County list on July 5, 1891, with Elizabeth J.Burrow first postmaster. It has not been in continuous service but was operating in 1980.

I am the great-great-grandson of William Bedford Wridge. I trace my lineage by way of my mother, Kathleen Wridge (maiden name), she being the daughter of Delwin Wridge, my grandfather Delwin being the son of Benjamin "Art" Arthur Wridge, my greatgrandfather Art being the son of William Bedford Wridge. And William Bedford Wridge is the son of Francis "Frank" Marion Wridge. Unfortunately, this is as far as I've been able to reach. It seems that the true surname of our family was Ridge, but great-great-great-grandfather Frank adopted the revised spelling of Wridge as a way of making a break from the past. (Family legend tells that Frank and his wife Sarah Ann and their 3 children were members of a party of settlers headed by wagon to the Oregon Territory. At some point in that trip Sarah Ann became involved with the wagon master for whom she subsequently abandoned Frank and the children. In fear that she would one day attempt to find and take the children from him, Frank made the decision to add a silent W to the Ridge name.)

Do you know of anyone?
BTW, on the Cemetary listings JD Miller is also listed in the Merriman/Miller cemetary, the correct dates for our John D, so I think he is buried there as well as Abraham and an my father's infant brother. THrough some family papers I have record of Jay Miller, one of ANdrew's son's also being buried there.

Re: 1996 obit from Gold Beach, Oregon, Robert Gale Shufelt 11/21/1996

Hi Brenda, in Curry County there are two sources for obits (that I know of);

OR Library System, www.oregonlibraries.net/ and choose Curry County. OLS seems to charge $5 to $15/obit depending upon the decedent's location.

University of Oregon, http://libweb.uoregon.edu/general/gethelp.htm/. They charge $30/hr to look up obits with a $7.50 minimum. Successful Hunting!

If you have not read the article about Antone in the book "Illahe"by Kay Atwood you are missing a lot of information about his life. page 137-141.They include pictures and the statement that Antone had only one ear. It says that a bear chewed off his right ear. Hope this is new information. I can send a copy of the article if you can't find it.
