Re: Sloper

There are a good number of persons having family trees including this man. He was born October 21, 1811 in Maine, died 4 June 1884 in Polk County, OR. He was married on 14 Jan 1833 in Meigs, Ohio to Rebecca Wells. His parents were Samuel Sloper 1785 to 1849, mother Hulda (Huldah) Cooper, 1790 to 1846. They had 10 Children. But, of these, none (openly) identified where he was BURIED, although many indicate buried in Polk County.

BUT, first, of family tree's posted online, some to all have WRONG information, so ANY information you receive from a person MUST be verified through the actual documents where the information was found.

For those links posted by the other shotgun:
Findagrave shows no information.
For the Tombstone project, the link will not work, it is very old. The correct one: http://www.usgwtombstones.org/oregon/polk.html
--The problem with cemetery listings: First, few are transcribed. Of those that are, many graves were missed. Many stones were found missing, or broken. There is also no indication he was actually buried in the county of death. Many farmers in that period of time had their own family cemetery on their property.

Cemetery listings will NOT find him. Obituaries in that period were not as popular as today, if any mention was made, it was an obit written by a newspaper reporter about a famous/infamous or victim of accident/fire, etc; or act of violence. The Oregon Death certificates were not required by the State at that time; but there "might" be one in the local county records (contact the county auditor).

I would first try contact with others posting on this person, they "may" or may not have ANY information as to his burial place. If you do have an Ancestry.com membership, just enter his name and check Family Tree's. If you don't, you can "pay" for a membership. OR, check your local library. Many local libraries have this as a database available via your library card AT the library's computer system.

Ron Bestrom

Thanks for your reply. My great grandfather was George F. Richter who came to America with his parents & siblings in the 1850's. Richter family lived in Hickory Co., MO before George F. & wife homesteaded to Hayes Co., NE. I never met Arthur or his children. I knew his sister (my great aunt Bell & her daughter Claudina). I enjoy doing genealogy and was trying to fill in some blanks. My name is Karen.

The 1930 US Census Eola, Polk, OR shows Stanley Picha married to Ruby and living with Stanley's parents Frank & Hattie Picha. Was Ruby's maiden surname Richter? When did Ruby die? When did Stanley marry Elsie? What was Elsie's maiden surname?
Dollie who was married to Clyde Picha was a Richter and had a younger sister Ruby.
Thanks for any clarification you might provide.

Hi,
I'll try to answer both queries.

In 1809 David Fudge was living in Franklin, Warren Co., OH. Source: OH Early Census Index, www.ancestry.com.

In 1810 David Fudge was living in Franklin, Warren Co., OH. Source: OH 1810 Washington Co. Census Index, www.ancestry.com.

In 1850 the Fudge family was living in Monroe, Preble Co., OH.
David Fudge, b. OH, 42 yrs old, farmer.
Catharine, b. OH, 30.
Elizabeth, b. OH, 12.
Mary, b. OH, 10.
Margaret, b. OH, 8.
Ashur, b. OH, 5.

In 1860 David Fudge was living in Washington, Preble Co., OH. Source: OH 1860 Federal Census Index, www.ancestry.com. However, I didn't find the Federal Census.

In 1860 Margaret Fudge was living in Monroe, Preble Co., OH. Source: Federal Population Schedule, OH 1860 Federal Census Index. However, I didn't find this Federal Census, just the index.

In 1850 John, Mary and children Coovert were living in Monroe, Preble Co., OH.
John Coovert, b. NY, 59, farmer.
Mary, wife, b. OH, 45.
Jane, b. OH, 21.
Peter, b. OH, 20, farmer.
John, b. OH, 15 (b. abt. 1835), farmer.
Jacob, b. OH, 13.
Daniel, b. OH, 8.

Also in 1850 a Johnson Coovert was living with the Davisson family in Monroe, Preble Co., OH.
Johnson Coovert, b. OH, 20, farmer.

On the same Census page in 1850 a John Coovert, b. OH, 5 was living with the Shields family.
Elizabeth Coovert, b. OH, 13 was also living with the Shields family.

I looked for the parents of Johnson Coovert, however, I didn't find anything definitive in the Census records. The 1840 Censuses only name the head of household and a tally count of the members of the household.

Probably to find the parents, you'll need to find a book (or books) on Preble Co., OH which list births, marriage and deaths. Google Books is generally a good source or do a web search for Preble County Ohio Births, Marriages and Deaths. You can also contact their local genealogy society.

I did find a family tree on Ancestry for Johnson Ernest Coovert 1830-1878 with father Reuben and mother Besheba. Reuben had a second wife Mary. You can view this family tree by going to www.ancestry.com.

A Johnson Coovert married Elizabeth Fudge 5 Feb 1857 in Preble Co., OH. Source: Ohio Marriage Index 1803-1900, www.ancestry.com.

I didn't find anything else on them.

In 1870 John and Margaret Coovert were living in Dayton, Yamhill Co., OR.
John, b. OH, 25, farmer.
Margaret, b. OH, 26.

There is a family tree on Ancestry which shows John Wesley Coovert b. 1845, Preble Co., OH who died 1920, Yamhill Co., OR. He was first married to Marguerite Fudge b. 1844, d. 1873 and had Alonzo, Letha and Asher.

Then he married Hanna Sargent.

In 1880 John Coovert, wife Hannah and children were living in Dayton, Yamhill Co., OR.
John Coovert, b. OH, 35, farmer.
Hannah, wife, b. VT, 34.
Letha, dau, b. IN, 11.
Alonzo, son, b. OR, 9.
J. M. Botsford, boarder.
Mary Botsford, boarder.

Another family tree shows Margaret Ann Fudge b. 1844, IN who was married to John W. Coovert b. 1845, d. 1920. Margaret d. 1873, Dayton, Yamhill Co., OR. Their children were Alonzo and Letha.

I know I didn't provide the answers, however, hopefully I've given you some new leads. If you don't feel comfortable contacting me in person, please email our church Salemfbc.org and leave a message.Would greatly appreciate it!
Thanks for the email. I personally corresponded with this lady many years ago. She gave me some information on my Robinsons which was greatly appreciated. My 2nd gg mother Clara Catherine nee Robinson md. (1) Charles Kendrick Dawson and (2) John Phillips. Clara would therefore be the step mother to Greta.

If you have any further information on Greta's husbands I would appreciate it. I have researched Greta's ancestry a little and found her mother to be Jennie or Jane A. Skaife b. 25 July 1850.

I found additional information that you had posted elsewhere that would have been VERY HELPFUL in this posting. If you have additional info when posting to a genealogical site, always include that. It will help in the research; and avoid additional "findings" that you already have:

Cyrenus Clark Hooker
dob 12/1/1818 Chatauqua County, New York
dod 2/12/1852 Murdered in Polk County, Oregon
According to the book "A Man is a Man" by M. Overholser on the Hooker Family he was murdered over a stolen watch by a man named Return W. Everman who stole the watch from the home of Cyrenus's brother where Cyrenus was living and farming at the time. He was shot from ambush as he plowed his fields. He was not found until the next day. A posse hunted down and arrested Everman who was hung from the "hanging tree" in Rickreall, Polk County, Oregon on May 11, 1852.
--The 1850 Census for Portland, OR,
R.W. Everman, age 23, carpenter, born in Kentucky
Hiram Everman, 26, born in KY.
R.W. was also in te Oregon census of 1845

The www.findagrave.com identifies the same information in a write-up in the Burch Pioneer Cemetery, Rickreall, Polk County, Oregon. He was son of Ira Allen and Sarah Taylor Hooker.
--The 1850 Census for Polk Co.
Ira A. Hooker, age 70, born Vermont
Sarah, 65, born New York
Harriet T, 21, born IL
--On another page
Nemas Hooker, age 33, born VA
Jane, 26, born KY
Sarah C, 3/12., born Oregon Territory

The book written by Marguariete Overholser
http://www.bookfinder.com/dir/i/A_Man_Is_a_Man/0832305006/ Marguariete was born 1914.
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/fhlcatalog/supermain...

Your first "task" would be to find this book and see what bibliography data she used for this claim of this murder. The bibliography is on pages 279-181. The above site has one organization that carries the book. You can also request this book through your own library via the library loan system, they look for it and borrow it.

As far as an obit. Obituaries were extremely, extremely rare in newspapers up to the late 1800's/early 1900's when newspapers became more common. Because this was a criminal action, murder, a local newspaper may have written the account as news, by a news reporter.

There is a VERY small chance of a death certificate. They were not "required" until July 1903.

This is a listing of archived records of Polk County, via the Oregon State Archives:
http://www.sos.state.or.us/archives/county/cppolkdescrip1.ht...
The listing of offices and repositories are those locations where the records are ACTUALLY KEPT.

Since this was a capital crime, murder, felony, any court records would be via the Circuit Court. As you can see most are in old volumes or microfilm.

You would need a LOCAL researcher to find records for you. I did NOT see a "Dick" that did research in Polk County on the Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness in Oregon. There is a Kristina in Polk, but does not do lookups:
http://www.raogk.org/oregon4.htm

The Polk County Historical Society does have records. You can look in their library with access to their museum. They do some research; but at $7.50 per hour.

Ron Bestrom

Hi lhughes,
I think you're going to need someone to look this up in the 1852 newspaper, if there was one in 1852.

I'd contact the Polk County Historical Society Museum, www.traveloregon.com/Explore-Oregon/Willamette-Valley/Attrac... . The genealogy library is located in their building.

Their is a Random Acts Genealogical Kindness volunteer, Dick, who looks up obituaries in Polk Co.. See their web site, www.raogk.org, read instructions, choose Oregon, choose Polk Co.

The Western Oregon State College Library might have newspapers too.
The Grayum's are buried in the Falls City Cemetery:
http://files.usgwarchives.net/or/polk/cemeteries/fallscityio...

Oregon does not have online death certificates like MO, sigh! Records are available at the archives to the public from 1903 through 1957; you must be a relative to order post 1957 DC's.

You would be able to order a copy of the death certificates though the Oregon State Archives, but there is a charge.

You can contact the archives for information by sending an email (which is free):
Oregon State Archives
800 Summer St NE
Salem, OR 97310
503-373-0701 ext. 1
Fax: 503-373-0953
reference.archives@state.or.us

Also, there is a RAOGK volunteer who might be able to obtain the obituaries for you at a very small/no cost.
http://www.raogk.org/oregon.htm
Choose Polk County, Dick Straw.

I hope this helps. Good Luck!
Laura

Laura Grayum Obit/Cemetery Record

I am searching for an obit. and burial location for Laura E. Grayum who died 9 Dec 1939 in Polk County. She is listed in the 1930 South Falls, Polk, Census. Her husband is Albert Harley Grayum who died 26 Mar 1936 in Polk County. Is there an online resource listing cemetery records for Polk County or does Oregon list death certificates online? Missouri has digitized death records available on the web from 1909-1957. Does Oregon have a similar site? Any suggestions for finding this information?

Perry McCabe owned both of these about 1900 in Independence, Oregon. Would love more information on the tile as his brother also built and owned the same in Illinois. ANyone with any knowledge willing to share, I would greatly appreciate it.
