Judy Jo Hills --Obituary

The Headlight Herald
Tillamook, OR
March 4, 2010

Judy Jo Hills

Judy Jo Hills passed away at home Feb. 27, embraced in the love of her family.

A celebration of life service will be held at 1 p.m. on March 6 at the Alano Club, 215 N 6th in St. Helens.

Judy was born in Colorado Springs, Colo., to Inez and Charles Rhoades.

In 1954, she and her family moved to Portland from Casper, Wyo.

The fourth if eight children, she became the primary caretaker of her four younger siblings at the age of 8, because her mother often worked three jobs to support the family.

Judy attended Highland Grade School and Jefferson High School.

In 1960, she married and moved to California. She returned to Portland and divorced her first husband.

Judy worked as a bartender to help support her children. In August 1964, she met Dennis Hills, who had just been discharged from the Army.

She was his favorite bartender and he fell deeply in love with her. To his great joy, she agreed to marry him in March 1967.

Her childhood dream was to live in the country and she had her dream, eventually living on 100 acres with cattle, horses and creatures of all kinds. Her happiest days were living in the country, even though it was a time filled with hard work.

She and Dennis remodeled two homes and built two others. Judy learned to be a carpenter, Sheetrock finisher, septic system installer, electrician - whatever was required or needed to finish the job.

She was a strong-willed and independent person. She called Dennis one day at work and said he didn't need to buy her a birthday gift, as she had gotten what she wanted.

When he got home from work the next day, he found her in the field clearing a fence line with her gift - her very own chain saw.

She worked for a while as a woodworker and then later as a candle maker, but most of all she loved being at home building a life for her family.

Judy's greatest advocacy was working with women in recovery. In recovery herself for 39 years, she knew and understood the hardships women experience in alcoholism, abuse and addiction, and gave generously and lovingly of her time and energy to help others.

She spent so much time on the phone helping others that she finally had to have cordless phone with a headset so she could complete her chores.

When a treatment center was built in St. Helens, she began to work with women from all parts of Oregon and Washington, many of whom continued to call and check in long after they had left treatment and returned home.

Judy never felt she was anyone special - just one person helping another. But there are hundreds of women throughout Oregon and Washington who know better.

As long as they stay in recovery, they will remember and pass on the common sense and wisdom Judy shared with them.

The mother of one young woman said it best in a letter of thanks: "Some people go their whole life without ever knowing what they were here for and, whether you know it or not, you are here to salvage lives and all of us want to be you." As long as her wisdom is passed on by those with whom she shared and cared, she will live.

Judy is survived by her husband of 42 years, Dennis B. Hills; children Richard Ray Hills, Carmen LeAn Kauffman, Ronda Marie Holdridge and Dennis Chauncey Hills; 14 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sister Cindy Pullen of Vancouver, Wash.; brother Mike Rhoades of Portland; and sisters Connie of Vale and Shirley of Eugene. She was preceded in death by her mother, father, and brothers Jim, Lonnie and Ricky.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be sent to the St. Helens Alano Club, 215 N 6th, St. Helens, Ore.

Online condolences can be made to the family at columbiafh.com.

She will reside for eternity in Heaven with her Savior.

Wilma suffered a major heart attack in late October 2009 while visiting her daughter, Marilyn, in Meridian, Ida.

She was placed in hospice care in Idaho; her medical condition was supervised by her daughter until Wilma's death.

Her condition temporarily improved in November and December, giving everyone time to come and visit her one last time.

She celebrated her 89th birthday Nov. 30, with all her children and many grandchildren around her.

She attended church and regular outings until the week before she passed away.

She suffered a heart attack Feb. 20 and the family gathered to say goodbye to a beloved mother.

She died restfully, in the presence of her children, without pain or remorse about her life.

She was ready for the rest that her Savior had promised.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years; her parents; two sisters; a brother; and one grandson, Tim Stoner of Meridian.
March 3, 2010
Headlight Herald
Tillamook, OR

Roy Henry Meckley

Roy Henry Meckley was born in Portland on Oct. 8, 1927, to Henry and Roseann (Carr) Meckley.

Roy passed away in Seaside on Feb. 25 at age 82.

Roy attended Lincoln High School in Portland before he enlisted in the U.S. Navy.
Dan Seaholm makes Defensive Play

2/23/2010
Tillamook boys end season as No. 1 in Cowapa League

The Tillamook boys basketball team ended this season as it did the past two - as league champions.

The No. 4-rated Cheesemakers (19-3, 9-1 Cowapa) pulled away in the second half of their regular-season finale Feb. 19 for a 69-43 win at Seaside.

Coupled with a Scappoose victory over Astoria, the Mooks finished one game ahead of the Fishermen and atop the league standings.

As the Cowapa League's No. 1 seed, Tillamook will host the No. 2 seed from the Far West League on March 6.

Even though Seaside had little to play for - locked, as it was, in a fourth-place league finish prior to the tipoff - the Seagulls came out determined to challenge one of the state's best teams.

The two squads did little throughout a slow first quarter, before Tillamook began to establish an advantage thanks to the interior play of Jordan Schriber and Matt Bryant.

Still, Seaside's long-range shooting kept the margin at just four points at intermission, 25-21.

In the second half, Tillamook switched up some defensive assignments and the Seagulls were held in check. "Timber (Klahn), Dan (Seaholm) and Josh (Rodrigues) locked down their guards," said THS coach Greg Werner.

At the same time, the Cheesemakers' big edge in the paint led to opportunities from the foul line. Tillamook attempted fully 24 of its 28 free throws in the second half.

"Jacob Begin really spread the Seaside defense in the second half," Werner said. "He scored only six points, but he changed the complexion of the game."

Tillamook outscored Seaside 22-12 in the third quarter and 22-10 in the fourth, to win going away.

Schriber's 17 points led the Mooks. Bryant was close behind, with 14.

The pieces seem to be coming together for Tillamook as it eyes a deep playoff run, something less than certain when the season began. The Mooks started the year without the services of Dan Seaholm and Rodrigues, who both sustained injuries during football season.

Then, Bryant went down with a severe bone bruise in the league opener against Astoria, which turned out to be the Cheesemakers' only Cowapa loss.

Now at full strength, the team - particularly the senior class - can celebrate the third consecutive league title.

"It's a huge accomplishment," Werner said. "I can't give these kids enough kudos."

Now, the Cheesemakers will have to face another streak in a couple weeks. In the previous two seasons, Tillamook was knocked out of the state playoffs on their home floor by Newport (2008) and Gladstone (2009).

For the moment, though, it seems only good things come in threes.

Harvey Arden Moon --Obituary

The Headlight Herald
Tillamook, OR
Feb. 17, 2010

Harvey Arden Moon

Harvey Arden Moon died Jan. 21 at his home in Vancouver, Wash., of prostate cancer, surrounded by his loving family three months short of his goal of living to 100.

He was the second son born to Silas Dee Moon and Adalaide Gray in Blaine. His family moved to Tillamook, where he grew up. He was one of six in his graduating class of 1926.

He went to work in his father's log trucking business until the hard times of the Depression.

In 1947, he and his brother, Ormand, founded their own trucking company in Eugene, which they named Moon Brothers Pole and Piling Hauling, later renamed Moon Brothers Logging Company.

When Harvey retired in 1972, Moon Brothers was the largest independently owned logging company in Oregon.

Harvey grew up on the banks of the Trask River hunting and fishing. Those skills helped feed his family during the lean times. He lost his taste for hunting later in life, but never his passion for salmon fishing.

Harvey knew that the key to happiness lay in small, ordinary everyday pleasures. He loved to tinker and was typically figuring out how to do one thing or another.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 41 years, Madelyn; brother Ormand Moon of Lodi, Calif.; son Kenneth Moon of Boring; daughters Janet Miller and Jacquie Moon, both of Portland; step-son Bob Guard of Maupin; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by daughter Joyce Moon, brother Lloyd Moon, sister Anise Webb and step-son Don Guard.
The Headlight Herald
Tillamook, OR

James Dale 'Jim' Kephart

James Dale "Jim" Kephart was born in Tillamook on Dec. 24, 1952, to Stan and Elvira (Hollett) Kephart.

Jim passed away Dec. 23 in Tillamook. He was 56.

While a high school senior, Jim was selected to play in the Shriner's Football Game.

After graduating from Tillamook Catholic High School, Jim attended the University of Southern Oregon, Mt. Hood Community College and Western Oregon College.

After college, he moved back to Tillamook and took a job with the local RC Cola distribution company as a truck driver. He worked there for about a year, before working for Tillamook Rail Road.

In 1977, Jim moved to Portland and worked for Wallace Floor covering for about a year. He then returned to Tillamook and worked out of Carpet Corner's Shop as a subcontractor.

Jim married Bonnie Lynn Leinbach on March 14, 1982.

Together, in 1984 they opened Jim Kephart Floor Covering on Fourth Street in the back part of the Hawkins and James hardware store. They ran the store there for eight years, before relocating their shop to Third Street in the old Firestone and Sears store.

Jim's wife, Bonnie, and family will keep the business operating under Jim's name.

Jim had been a local businessman for 34 years as of this past March. He was born and raised in Tillamook, which is where he wanted to live and raise his family.

Jim was a member of the Tillamook Elks Lodge for more than 30 years. He was also a member of the Order of the Antelope for 20 years and a member of the Tillamook Booster Club.

Jim loved to go golfing with his friends, rain or shine. He enjoyed hunting, and camping with his family and friends. His favorite thing was to sit around the campfire and tell stories and sing. Every once in a while, he would bring out his guitar and banjo.

Jim worked with the YMCA youth programs. When his children, Chad and Kelly, where old enough to start sports programs, Jim signed up as their coach. He coached all of their different sports and never missed a game throughout their 12 years of school.

When Jim's grandson, Sawyer, was born this last year, he was the apple of Jim's eye. Jim said Sawyer made everything he had to go through this past year worthwhile.

Jim will be greatly missed by all of his friends and family. He loved them very much.

He leaves behind to honor his life wife Bonnie Kephart of Tillamook; sons Chad and Kelly Kephart, both of Tillamook; grandson Sawyer James Kephart Crabtree; parents Stan and Elvira Kephart of Tillamook; brothers Bill Kephart and wife Sandy, Dan Kephart and wife Jennifer, Tim Kephart and wife Tami, all of Tillamook; sister Sherry Weir and husband Mark of Tillamook; in-laws Ed and Ginger Yates of Woodburn, Andy and Maggie Leinbach, Terry and Sandy Leinbach, and Scott and Debbie Leinbach; seven nieces; two great-nieces; 10 nephews; eight great-nephews; and :Sammy," a special pet Boston terrier named Samantha,

A Recitation of the Holy Rosary was held Dec. 30 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, followed by a funeral Mass. Interment was in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Tillamook.

Those who wish to make contributions in Jim's name may do so to the Tillamook High School Booster Club or to the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are by Waud's Funeral Home.
Yes, please contact me avisreddaway@comcast.net
I would like any pictures of the Earl families. I have extensive files on the family from their arrival in Oregon territory in 1845. John Earl seems to have had a cemetery on his property in Linn County which is "lost" at this time unless family members turn up with specific GPS info. Linn County cemetery I believe will have the grave of their Mother and perhaps one brother to John. John sold out and moved to Tillamook county. On the Tillamook county property there is also a "lost cemetery" which would have been on the Earl property. ODOT published two guides for Oregon cemeteries so you can check for this information. Today, we when we think cemetery, we think proper grave marker. In John's day, often the graves had "rocks" with the initials carved. This is how John's sister's grave was marked in Linn County. The Tillamook creamery is using a picture which contains Jesse Earl in their ads and on their cookbook. I want to trace the stories connected to the Earls from the time they reached Oregon Territory so I have pulled newspaper articles and books for any Earl connection or family member connected to the Earls. Do you know the location of the Mill in Tillamook county?
Thanks for any help. I just read the post from the man at the Tillamook library. Yes, I have been to the Tillamook museum. The museum has a logging picture up on their wall of Earl logging with oxen. John Earl would have logged with a Powell descendant. Ruby has been a great help.
avis
