It looks like to me, according to the listings on Findagrave, that Elizabeth (1858-1945), Thomas (1885-1971) and Herbert (1887-1962) where buried at the Enterprise Cemetery, in Enterprise, Oregon. They are not pictures of the headstones but you can request them on Findagrave. Good luck.

The following is bits and pieces of full articles that have been sent to us from:
The Oregonian-newspaper 5 May 1895 page 3
and the
History of Union and Wallowa Counties 1902 book pages 580-581.
1st is John Fleming he was born in Perry County, Illinois July 1857. He married a Elizabeth Gwillin on 23 December 1884 in a unknown place. They had the following children:
Thomas W., Hebert L..,Homer R., and Harriet E.,
John was killed by a John Baslm in Enterprise over a cow on 29 April 1895. His remains rest in the oddfellows and Mason's cemetery in Joseph.

We would like to find out if there is a headstone located there for John Fleming that we could request a photo of. We would like to find headstones for the rest of the family but have no idea when they died or where they were buried.

Re: Promise, Wallowa County

Interesting question...also a very difficult question.

First, your posting identifies no names. WHO are you seeking to find in this area that arrived by train from 1890 to 1910? If this is one family, then you MUST identify WHO exactly you seek in order to find WHEN exactly they first arrived. The WHEN is so very important, an arrival date also strongly dictates what route they may have taken from initial departure to arrival. Also, there is a consideration on what route THEY may have taken to visit other family first. As example, did they travel from West Virginia to Pennsylvania to pick up parents? etc.

Looking over your other postings, I find:
Benjamin Pleasant Hawley from West Virginia, in Promise, Wallowa Co, Oregon in 1900. I suspect this is the family you seek? Some factors on the family. I often wonder why after so many years in one place, such as the Hawley family, after having so many children, that they suddenly moved from West Virginia to a wilderness area of Promise, Oregon.

Now, the wide gap in potential years, 1890 to 1910. This gap greatly influences the potential routes they may have taken due to the basic availability of train routes. Even ONE year could influence the routes taken. Even in the SAME year routes changed. If they traveled in July, there may have been more trains on more routes than in January, due to heavy snows in the passes. Even today, Amtrak changes their routes, sometimes on a yearly or even seasonal basis.

Other factors: The completion of railroad lines to various cities. IF they went to Promise, OR, they probably didn't travel by train all the way there. They may have traveled to the closest hub, perhaps Spokane in Washington or Boise in Idaho, perhaps down to Clarkston, WA/Lewiston, ID, THEN by wagon.

I looked at the two links posted by the other. Neither had any information relevant to your research.

Some Oregon Rail History:
http://www.pnwc-nrhs.org/oregon-rr-history.html

"IF" this Ben Hawley is who you are researching, it appears he married Abigail Abby Miller in 1896, in West Virginia, but then I also see the marriage as being in 1869(numbers reversed on one of the records?). The 1900 Census finds them in Grouse and Promise Precincts of Wallowa Co, OR. The youngest child was born in March 1896 in West Virginia (Erie T). So, it appears they moved sometime between that birth and the 1900 census.

So, to find out what route they took has MANY factors and will take a lot of work. First to find out exactly when they left West Virginia, who arrived and when. Then attempting to identify what trains were actually arriving in what nearby location.

The Bureau of Land Management http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/
has a database of land obtained under the Homestead Act:
http://www.legendsofamerica.com/AH-Homestead.html
The BLM shows Benjamin P. Hawley obtained 160 acres of land on 2/28/1906 in Wallowa County.
First click on "Search Land Patents" (background is green), then enter your zipcode. Enter "Oregon" and "Hawley". Clicking on his name will give you more info on the land. Under the tab of Legal Land Description, it is shown as being in Township 4-N(north), Range 42-E(east), Sections 23 and 26. If you don't know where this land was located, repost and I'll give you instructions.

Ron Bestrom

Hi, regarding Louisa Johnson, she is of a different Johnson family then mine. Ole (Nordaune) Johnson was my Grandfather, married to Anna who came to this country in 1901 from Norway. They went to Minnesota when arriving, then to Nevada, then Wallowa County. There was an Ole Johnson in the La Grande area, which is now Union County, could be your relatives.
Captain Anderson C. Smith~d. 1911 Enterprise

The Oregonian (Portland, Oregon) August 14, 1911 Page 10
Enterprise , Or., August 13
Captain Anderson C. Smith, one of the earliest and best known residents of Union and Wallowa counties, died at his home in this city Thursday morning, August 10, after months of illness due to his great age. He lacked but six days of completing his 80th year.
Mr. Smith was born in Franklin county, Illinois, August 16, 1831. In 1851 he came across the plains to California, where he engaged in mining for three or four years, then returned to his boyhood home by way of the Isthmus, and married, in 1856, Sarah A. Whittington. They settled in eastern Kansas, but in 1862 came to Oregon and were the first settlers at the Cove in the Grande Ronde. In 1876, they moved to near Enterprise, which since has been their home. Mr. Smith followed farming, stockraising and in 1888, was admitted to the bar. For many years he had been Justice of the Peace.
He served in the Civil War as first lieutenant of Company D.
The Oregonian (Portland, Oregon) August 10, 1913 Page 16
Two Old Settlers Dead
Mrs. Harriet Powers and Godfrey Wealty Pass Away
La Grande, Or., Aug. 9
Eastern Oregon loses two of its early settlers in the deaths of Mrs. Harriet N. Powers and Godfrey Wealty, both living near Wallowa, Wallowa County.
Mrs. Harriett N. Powers, who died last Thursday at her home at the age of 76 years, was one of the first white settlers in Wallowa County. She was born in Illinois in 1837. She immigrated to Oregon with her parents in 1852, settling at Oakland, Or., and was married in 1854 to Winslow Phelps Powers, to which union 10 children were born, six of whom are living. In 1873 the family moved to Wallowa County where she lived on their homestead until her death. Mrs. Powers enjoyed the distinction of giving birth to the second white child born in Wallowa County.
She was well acquainted with Chief Joseph and had experienced many indian raids upon the settlers. From early childhood she had been a tireless worker in the Methodist Episcopal Church. Besides her six children she is survived by many relatives including 39 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Godfrey Wealty was born in Switzerland in 1831 and came to the United States, settling in Wisconsin in 1853. In 1882, he and his family moved to Summerville, in Union County, where they lived for 20 years, moving from there to Wallowa County where he has since lived. He is survived by his wife, two children and grandchild. He was buried in the Wallowa Cemetery Sunday morning.

I took another look at this. I thought to look in the 1900 census for Charles. So, I looked for ANY Churchill, born plus/minus 5 years of 1852 in Illinois, having a father born in New York and mother in Ohio:

The 1900 Census for Alder Creek, Yakima County, WA
Charles Churchill, born April 1854, age 46. Born in Illinois to father born in New York and mother in Ohio. He was a farmer.
--While the year of birth does not match the Charles found in Illinois in the 1800 Census, census data was often wrong. His parents place of birth match.

The 1910 Census for Portland, Oregon
Charles Churchill, age 55, born in Illinois to father born n New York, mother in Ohio, a retail merchant. He was single.

I went back to the 1860 census and looked for any Charles Churchill born 5 years plus/minus of 1852 found in the entire USA.
The 1860 Census for Barry, Pike County, Illinois
Chester Churchill, 38, farmer, born in New York
Mariah, 33, born in Ohio
Charles, age 6, born in Illinois
and two sisters born in IL.
--So this one matches the age of the one found in Yakima and Portland. So, if this person appears in your searches, he probably isn't your Charles. He is about the only one in the USA during this period 1860 to 1920 that matches that criteria of being Charles Ed.

Do you know when or where Charles died? If they traveled from 1880 (I did find Charles with his brother and mother in the 1880 census living in Illinois). He could have died almost anywhere.

Ron Bestrom

Doug,
If you have pertinent personal data on these people, it would help a researcher. A date of birth is ALWAYS foremost, year of birth or place of birth, with parents, siblings, etc. something to identify just exactly who you seek. As far as the "Oregon Trail", a timeframe is needed. If they came across it in a covered wagon in 1880, that is probably more justified, than if they came across in 1920. Always try to give particulars on what exactly you know and how.

Based on your other posts, I'll have to "guess" the family came from Illinois.

The Rezin Churchill in the 1900 Census for Paradise, Wallowa Co, was born January 1848, in Illinois to father born in New York and mother in Ohio. His date of birth helps identify the range of a date of birth that Charles Edwin may have had.
(Judy...The places of birth of the parents are IMPORTANT to identifying people in later census. A number of persons you identify do not meet the "parent criteria", so you end up being WRONG)

The 1870 Census for Madison, Grundy County, Missouri:
C. H. Churchhill, 58, house carpenter, born in NEW YORK
Rachel D., 53, born in OHIO
Rezion D, 22, farmer, born in IL
Charles E, 18, born in IL
--So, with a bit of research, Rezion (Rezin as indicated) was born circa 1847/1848 in IL, Charles was born circa 1851/1852 in IL.

So, your dates of 1880 to 1930 do not appear to be within the life limits of Charles Edwin. If born in 1851/2, then his crossing to Oregon could have occured at anytime from birth, traveling with parents.

NOW, that I've established some time lines.

The Bureau of Land Management land patent records
http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/ show Rezin D obtained 160 acres of land under the Homestead Act in Wallowa County on 12/17/1898. Nancy J. Churchill obtained 160.84 acres on 6/17/1898. This indicates that Charles was either not the person applying or was not involved for one reason or another, death, divorce, abandonment, etc. There is NO proof of any event. We CAN NOT assume he died at this point.
The land that either obtained can be identified down to the Range, Township and Section. So, it is proven that both Rezin and Nancy J obtained land in Wallowa...no "guessing" required.

Her land was in the Willamette Meridian, Township 5North (mostly), and Range 45 East and Section 4. In the Section 32, you'll see "SESE", in Section 5, you'll see NENE.

Take these descriptors to: http://www.esg.montana.edu/gl/trs-data.html and input them into the window.

The next window shows some general location information. Note the location to "Paradise". Once you have looked, click on "Switch to TerraServer". The next window, click on the largest block for size and click on "Topo Map".

Now, you'll see a topographic map. Do you see Paradise? The red squares are Sections. In the Red square, just to the right that holds the word Paradise, click in it. Then click in it again. You should now see a red "4" in the middle of that square. The square of paradise has a "5". the one above has a 32. Going back to the original identifiers in the BLM site of Section 5, NENE and Section 32 SESE, look at this topo map. Her land would have been in the bottom right of the square "32", which would be SESE (South east, South east). and the NENE corner of Section 5 (North east, North east. For Section 4, it was the NWNW. So her land was in this area around those corners of sections 32, 5 and 4.

As to the land, there is no information that indicates that Charles Edwin was or was not a part of the original application or not. You might request the paperwork for this land grant from the BLM; but, I doubt it will have significant information. If he was a naturalized citizen, it should hold his naturalization papers.

Judy, shotgun, said:
> You might look at the End of the Trail Interpretive Center, Oregon City,
> www.endoftheoregontrail.org/joom/aeotic/. I don't know if they have lists
> of those who came West via the Oregon Trail or not.

First, again, you posted a link that is incorrect.
http://www.endoftheoregontrail.org/joomlaeotic/
After spending 30 seconds, I find no lists of persons. Since there was no "passenger" lists, or listings made of those crossing, common sense dictates that it would be VERY difficult to impossible to establish a list of persons.

Doug, I didn't look through the cemetery listings, you can; but, don't expect to find them. Cemetery listings are not transcribed, there are missing stones, or incomplete listings. IF you have knowledge of EXACTLY where someone lived and died, THEN, try them. Otherwise, unless you have extra time, I wouldn't.

As to obtaining the obit for this "Fred Ricks"... I wouldn't waste the effort. Even if he was the husband of Jennie, the obit wouldn't solve any questions.

You need someone in the local area of Wallowa county to check records for Jennie. She had land there. She would have some type of record. Even if Charles never arrived there, there might be a record of him as being her "deceased" or "disappeared" husband.

Wallowa genealogy: http://genealogytrails.com/ore/wallowa/index.html
BUT, since it also boarders other counties, Umatilla, Baker, Union and Washington State, Idaho, you might seek other help. This one will require some work... Are you in to it? Genealogy is like a crime scene...it takes time to gather all the FACTS. There will be false leads, false information along the way, but look at them and discard them as they come. Keep an excellent "report of investigation" and you will find them.

Ron Bestrom

Thanks for the reply. I am still confused on the names. I found an obit for Montie Creigh Daniels. I know newspapers are not always right, but it said his father was Governor Daniels. Cemetery records for Wallowa,Wallowa, Oregon state that the name on stone is Govener Davis Daniel born 1861 and died 26 Aug 1920.Obit for his wife Nancy C. Daniels says that he was C. D. Daniels. 1910 Census calls him Gov. D. Daniel. I guess something in there is the "right name".

Here is where you can find government "land patents", homesteads:

http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/PatentSearch/

It gives the exact location of George W. READ 1918 Wallowa land patent. You would then need a map to show you the township, range and section of that particular area.
