And, yes, we might have been in contact before. I've been chipping away at this since our aunt first made her request on her 90th birthday. The JONES - FANN side seems to have gotten into records more but I've been thwarted by her mother's side for four years now & running out of places to look and wishing I were closer than a 14 hr drive away.

I'm disappointed that none of my Aunt's GOFF's from the 1880 - 1900 censuses are there but atleast I know for sure now what FHL film/book they aren't in.

Hinson/Hickson/Hickman or whatever his actual name turns out to be - I'm suspecting that it's his middle name he's going by - is one tough guy to find & I sure do hope I can find him before our Aunt becomes an ancestor herself.

A post or email, either would be fine although I suppose the forum depends on the quantity of info found but a public forum has the potential to benefit others beyond me. Thanks for the help with this first film/book.

I just ordered the Epitaphs film. I never heard of it and it doesn't show up on the Caroliniana catalog. I didn't think there was any surveying for Crescent Hill! Do you want me to post here when I get it or can you email me? dbloom@richlandlibrary.com. I think we have worked on some other stuff...

A couple of years back, an elderly aunt, now almost 94y, who lost both her parents & grew-up in an orphanage asked me to trace her family.

I've been able to tell her alot about her father's side but the one thing I've never been able to do is get past the 1880 census for her mother's family.

I've not been able to determine what her maternal grandfather's name was from the online resources available to me or find anything earlier than the 1880 census.

Our aunt's mother was Estelle Irene Jones nee GOFF.

When Estelle died in childbirth in 1921 in Columbia, her husband Robert Weston Jones was the informant but he didn't know his father-in-law's name & all that's entered is "Mr. Goff."

Robert & Estelle's marriage license didn't contain the names of either party's parents.

And I've tried to find Estelle's father's name by looking at her siblings but haven't had much luck there either.

One sibling's death record says he was named William S. Goff and the other's death record says his name was John Goff. I haven't been able to find any of the other siblings past 1900.

On the 1880 census Upper Township, Richland Co, Estelle's father's name is difficult to read and could have been Hinson, Hickson or Hickman. The family surname was entered as GAUF for the census.

The family unit in 1880 was Hinson/Hickson/Hickman 35y, b. SC, parents b. SC; Catherine 25y, wife, b. SC, parents b. SC; Sevilla 8y, dau, b. SC; Samuel 5y, son, b. SC; Theodore 2y, son, b. SC & John Carrol 3 mos, son, b. SC.

Born between 1880 and 1900 when Catherine is found in Columbia on the 1900 census as a widow, were William b. Jun 1883 and Estelle b. Aug 1896 (later records, Estelle claims her birth as 1890).

What I'm requesting is if anyone has access to the following FHL Richland Co. cemetery films, if they could look for burials for this family so I might possible learn what Hinson/Hickson/Hickman's acutal given name was.

Since I'm unsure of Hinson/Hickson/Hickman's acutal given name, it might be easier to look for his wife Catherine/Katherine Goff nee Hawkins and then hope from that to be able to find just what Hinson/Hickson/Hickman's acutal name had been.

Catherine was alive for the 1900 census but was gone by the 1910 census.

To narrow things down a bit, the family appears to have been Baptist.

Family Bible records show that George Robert Strange and Margaret M. Evans were married in Richland County 12/27/1827. I'm looking for info on both or either of these families. They moved to Georgia ~1840 and both died in Decatur County, GA.

My Great Great Grandmother was Hattie Brazell b. 1870 in SC and died 1927 in Richland County, SC. She married George Phillip Roberts. I have some information that I got years ago on the Brazells from a book written on the Brazell family by Clara Price.. The book is not sourced so I don't know how much of what I have is actuate. I would love to share information with you.

thanks for the link. the name switching and different spellings are the issues i keep running in to while doing this research. his name is nathaniel james on his headstone and death certificate...but i am sure back then it was easy to just put what you wanted.

my great-uncle robert is the one no one has info on. i heard he was the black sheep of the family...but growing up...he just my grand dad - since he married mary aaron russ (his sister in-law)..and he then married my mom's mother clara quick thompson russ. i do not know the story on why he married them both.

I also see that he served in the Seminole War on Chronicling America. The Center family was very important to the building of Columbia. I just don't see anything about Timothy except the military reference.

Thank you so much! I went back to make sure that the info that I gave was accurate. According to the 1930s census, Joe Keith was a patient, the 1940 census, inferred that he was there in 1935 as well.

My Great Grandmother died at the SC State Hospital on March 20th, 1926. She was admitted with Pellagra and from the death cert only was treated for 3 days. I do not know anything of her family. Are you able to obtain former patient records?

Not sure if there is anyone out there that does Obit lookups. I have found a couple on the RCPL site but am not in SC :) I know that Irene's death cert state she was buried at Spears Creek however I have not found her name on any list of plots I have run across. I am assuming that she was buried without a stone or marker. I am trying to get some of this final information for her last living child. She dies when he was only 3 or 4.

The 2004 post apparently never received any substantive response, so I'm hoping this second effort will reach new researchers. Yes, everyone says that the cemetery is no longer present - although I see nothing about where the original information (including the transcriptions) came from.

Does anyone have information on the cemetery location or where the documented transcriptions were initially found?

There are always alot of comments about the obit index we have at the Richland County Public Library. I am glad so many people have found the index useful.

Building the index to over 750,000 records has been alot of work for us and we appreciate the support we get from our Richland County taxpayers. They seem to think it is useful service for their tax dollars.

Earlier this year we begin charging for obit requests from non-Richland County library card users. Frankly alot of people were abusing the free service and a great deal of staff time was being used. We felt that it was a disservice to Richland County taxpayers who support us with their tax dollars to offer a free service to non RC taxpayers.

Fortunately we were able to keep the request cost very low and offer non-county users a library card for the same fee our taxpayers pay to support the library.

Thanks to everyone for supporting the staff time used to build the index and to providing obit requests.
