You can search by last name and there are quite a few Yellow Clouds buried in that cemetery.

Hi, you may want to check in "Find a Grave" web site. It's free and when you sign up for it, look for grave sites in Norris, Co. Dak. and enter names buried there. Or, try Mellett County Web site, which has directions re grave sites and names. You may want to email them and ask for the person who has Red Leaf Cemetery. Also, name may have been changed as many Indians set up thier own cemeteries on their property or on thier lands. Red Leaf, was a one of the main Chiefs of the Wajaje Band of the Brule Nation. I did not find the name Halligan in the book but Running Bird District # 18 is there.
It states that the bell rang for the first time on Sept 13 1926 and that 10 – 18 students attended sessions in a log cabin until a new school could be built.
There is more about the school on page 107.

Could you please check this book to see if there is any refence to the name Halligan. They lived in Cedar Butte. My Grandfather attended school at the Runningbird Day School when they first opened in 1926.

I need to do a correction. John Cunningham's wife was Elizabeth Sines. I need any info on them. Elizabeth's sister Sarah "Sally" was married to Henry Ryder. I have some info on them now.
I'm also looking for those ladies' brother Jacob Sines. Looking for a death date and where especially. They had another brother Anthony Sines, I need any info on him.
Also a sister Lydia who married Elizah Holcomb need info on them. They had a son William. They may have lived somewhere in SD. Any info would be greatly appreciated

I have a website www.genealogytrails.com/sdak/mellette that I have been transcribing info from various sources and posting. If you don't find info you are looking for on the site, I may have info I have not posted yet. I have been working closely with the Mellette County Historical Society on digitizing and posting info for them so I have several resources.

That's wonderful - thank you for letting me know. My grandmother-in-law's 98th birthday is next month and I think I will try to gather as much information and show her the various websites. I found her high school senior picture in 1930 and her brother's in 1932. I am going to write the Mellette County Historical Society to see what publications they might have and I think this information will make her have a very happy birthday. We are wondering if she might even want to go to White River for the Centennial next year!! Her stories of old White River are amazing.

There is a mention of a bakery in one of the stories but the name KENT is not with it. There are hundreds of names in the book and my list is only a list of the people in one chapter.

Thanks for your quick response and for checking on those names. I just went to the genealogytrails site and it's great - thank you! I'm going to go back and spend a little time on it.

Is the name Kent in the book? The Kents lived in White River and had a bakery/restaurant (John E and Caroline Kent, and their four children.) The genealogytrails site brough up quite a bit on them and what's wonderful is I even found a picture of my husband's great grandmother and his great uncle. She is referenced several times on that site because she was a school teacher around 1930. She is still alive and well and I intend to show her this site - and try to get more of her thoughts on growing up and teaching in White River. Caroline Kent lived to be 109 1/2 years old.

The names Graham and Ruckers are not in any of the titles in that chapter, but may be mentioned in the book other places.

The surnames do show up on http://genealogytrails.com/sdak/mellette/ have you been there?

In Digest # 60 from 15 Aug 2002 # 1029384371 which was submitted by Edward Reynolds. In this list # 95 is my maternal grandmother Jennetta Rosenfield Hodges. I have tried to contact Edward Reynolds to no avail. His email did not come back, so it had to be a valid address. Do you know anything about this person and his research? How can I verify the information he has posted, especially abouth the Reynolds, Charles2 and John1? I have information back to Ruth Reynolds who married Thorp. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

I do have a question. Arthur Ellsworth Dailey and Ethel Dailey are listed in the same Section and Lot. Ethel has no grave number. Can you tell me if the "no grave number" suggests no one is buried there?

For your gee-whiz file, my research shows Arthur Elsworth Daily, 17 Nov 1877, born OH, with his wife Ethel May [Terbell] Daily in Plankinton, Aurora, SD when Arthur registered for WWI.

Their son Arthur Glen Daily was born there 09 Jun 1920 and he died in CA in 1982.

I don't know yet if James or Ethel Dailey also listed are any relation.

Hello everyone... Looking for information on Davis Melvin Highfill and his family... He married Ruth Iwan on 6 Mar 1923 in Davison County, SD... In the 1930 census they are divorced and Ruth is living with her parents and two daughters in Rocky Ford, Mellette Co.

On 21 Sep 1930, Ruth Highfill remarried George Nelson Heaton. Ruth and George are both buried at Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, SD...

I am looking for information on Ruth and Davis' two daughters... Leslie M. Highfill was born around 1924 in Illinois and Marilyn K was born around 1927 in South Dakota... They were living with their mother in 1930 in Rocky Ford...

Looking for marriages, etc for the daughters...

POW/MIA Korean War, Mellette Co. GILBERT

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Mellette County (Wood), South Dakota as his home of record.

Soldier: DENNIS ALLEN GILBERT
Born: August 8, 1930
Date of loss: October 21, 1950 KIA

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 11 families in South Dakota that have not been located. There is one family from Mellette County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

I have attached pictures of headstones that I have not been able to post to the website yet. I may have a lot more info as I have just received tons of new info from the Mellette County Historical Society. I will send you additional info as I come across it.

Mellette County is in south central South Dakota and part of the Rosebud Reservation land is intermingled with non-reservation land.
