The only Gill mentioned on either page 416 or 417 of the 1984 Madison County History book is a story about Sarah Parten who married Cecil Gill Smith, pg. 416: "For 21 years Sarah and Gill have lived in Natchez, Mississippi." The only reference to the family name of Gill is on page 397 where it states: "James A. Fannin, Jr. married Elinor Jean Gill in 1950, and they had three children."

The Everready Service Station

Looking for information on a company I found for the 1930’s. The Everready Service Station is found in various newspapers around the country (USA) in Florida, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Texas (The Madisonville Meteor) and I am sure others. It was a franchise company (my assumption) and my Grandfather owned one in Florida in 1930. The spelling is correct according to what I have found with the double “rr” and it is not associated with the history of the Eveready battery. The add indicates it was selling Dunlop tires but can find no association with that company as well. The only commonality, in the advertisements, is the location was Madisonville Texas.

Thanks for any information or input,
Pat
Best wishes with that search! Raymond Drewel Holloway and Mildred Erma Hines are identified as parents on your father, uncle, and their sister's (Nina Lee) birth records. Mildred H. Holloway (12 Sep 1914 - 13 Jan 1959) died in Galveston but her primary residence was in Harris County. Mildred's parents listed on death certificate agree with census enumeration in Madison County. Puzzled she died surname Holloway vs Farris? Was Roland Hamilton Farris and Raymond Drewel Holloway the same person? Roland and Mildred found 1940 Fort Bend-Other Places-(79-11)-Image 6. That enumeration took place 3 Jun and your uncle was born 1 Sep the same year!

Walter Johnson and Sarah J Markham Johnson 1850?

I am in search of information about Walter Johnson and Sarah Jane (Sallie) Markham in Madison County in approximately 1850-1900. They had two sons, Lee James Johnson (b.1876?) and H.H. Johnson(b.1870). Lee James Johnson married Mary Etta Datray Johnson (b.1876). Lee and Mary Etta Datray Johnson had three children, William Walter Johnson (b.1909), Lona Marie Johnson (b. 1907), and Linne (Lynn) Johnson (1911). These children also went by the last name of Datray for a period of time due to custody issues. William Walter Johnson (1909-1970) married Odie Lorene Watterson Johnson (1907-1987) and had two children, Morris Johnson (1932-1991) and William Carroll Johnson (1936-2000). William Carroll Johnson is my father. I am really searching for information on Walter (1850?)Johnson and Sarah Jane Markham Johnson (1850?). If anyone can help me out and point me in the right direction, I would greatly appreciate your help! Thank you in advance for your time!!

Capps, who was bron in Limeston County, Texas, and was buried in the Sand Prairie Cemetery in 1933. He was born May 15, 1886, died Dec. 30, 1933, and his parents were W. K. Capps of Limestone County, and his mother was listed as Mrs. L. J. Beebee. Will this help any?
Thank you very much. I appreciate the input and will make changes.

BTW, do you know who Alonzo Everett Hand's parents were? or where he or Mary Magdalena were buried?

Yes, Charles Engle married Nannie Young in Menard County (where she was raised).
Per my Aunt Kathryn Segsworth (you can see her stories on my tree under her name) they stayed in Texas and then transferred to Oklahoma. When they came back from Oklahoma (when my grandmother was born in 1899), they bought land in Borden county. They homesteaded and he was shot by cattle herders. Nannie was close to her family there. Part of the land is still in our family (it's very hot, dry, and windy there!).

Hi! Just curious if were able to locate your relatives on any documents after emancipation (1865) untl the first census documenting the newly freed slaves. I did see many names of coloreds who registered to vote in Walker/Madison County, TX on the 1867-1869 Texas Voters registration. just looking up various ways to fins relatives before the 1870 census in the small window frame of 1865-1869.

Let me know. I beleive the Wyser family owned some of my relatives and will be looking for wills. The family may have rented land to them that they were living on in the 1870 census. Not sure at all. That would be a big help..

Thanks,
Cassandra

Your tree is the most complete, however it too needs a "little work"!(lol) No offense intended! Identification from the original posting: Appears he was Alonzo Everett Hand (first and middle names might be reversed) born ca. 1845 in New York. Per census, he married Mary Magdalene in 1881. That's probably more correct than the family bible entry (1879) 'cause believe he was single in 1880 Bexar County? Either way, they're found 1900 Leon-Precinct 1-District 42-Image 9 with sons Edward and William. Edward's middle initial erroneous (E) and should be "A". Guessing the father died prior to 1910 and William was enroute to Oklahoma? View 1910 Walker-Precinct 2-District 0160-Image 7 for Edward A. Hand and Mary M., his mother. Edward registered for WWI Draft in Walker County. Mary was listed as his next-of-kin so she was alive 1917/18. Later, Edward relocated to Oklahoma possibly to be near William? Lot of supposition but it makes sense to me! You descend from Charles Augustus Engle? Mattie Yoas wed T. J. Graves, 2 Jul 1879, in Milam County. She must have been close to her brother Charles Augustus? That's based on her son's name: Charles Augustus Graves born 1881. Another son, Lester Frank Graves was the informant on his mom's death certificate. Mattie Ella Graves (19 Oct 1858 - 10 Dec 1935) died in Menard County. Have yet to figure the "attraction" to Menard? Your Charles A. Engle was married there. If you seek other direct descendants some found via Mattie's lineage. Frank Graves (20 May 1893 - Feb 1979) and Grace Collier had Edy(Eddie) Lou (15 Sep 1932 - 28 May 1998). Edy wed, and divorced, Jimmy Lee Clouse, 3 Sep 1952 and 18 Jul 1975 respectively. They produced Brenda Maureen, Debra Ann, Jim Ed, and Joe Frank. Subsequently, Edy marrid, and divorced, Willie J. Smart, 31 Dec 1975 and 9 Mar 1976, respectively. She's on findagrave under surname "Smart".

Courtesy lookup, I'm not related! Her sister Catherine E. aka Kate aka Carrie E. wed Phillip D. Roddy, 28 Jun 1868. That marriage must have disintegrated 'cause she wed P. A. Brady, 3 Dec 1878, in Milam? Marion Lee Roddy (19 Feb 1874 - 30 Jan 1923) was a product of her first marriage. View 1900 Ector-Precinct 1-District 1-Image 1 for Lee Roddy(26) as head-of-household. Mom, Kate Brady(48), was a hotel owner and neighbor. Find them in 1910 Reeves-Precinct 4-District 0207-Image 10 with Carrie E. Brady(58) as head-of-household. Next, 1920 Reeves-Pecos-District 176-Image 19 look for Catherine E. Brady(67). Unable to locate death certificate for Catherine Brady, she may have remarried? She was the informant on her son's certificate so she was alive in 1923.

Lynda,
Yes they are my family members. They are my mother's brother and sister. Samuel "Uncle Edmond" (1940)was married to Judy Glover who perished in a fire around 1977 or 1978. Lilla Mae (born 1955) is married to Cornell Glover.

I am still researching more information on my maternal great great grandfather, James "Jim" Spencer. I am able to first locate him in 1870 around 19-21 years old in Huntsville, Walker county as "Jas", which is why it was difficult to find him at first. He was living with an Ann Wysor who was about 40 years old and had children ranging from age 4-13 years old. He married Millie Jackson in 1874 and Millie moved to Huntsville. Jim along with 6 other black families helped to found the Hopewell Missionary baptist Church. This church is sill going strong today and I spent many summers living with grandparents attending here. I have the names of the men who helped found it. I was doing research. Jim and Millie moved to Madison County around 1910 or so and settled there. They had Fron, Wince, James jr, Surphenion, Curmilla or Camilla?, Henry, and Adolphus. Wince married Pearl Tucker/Davis in 1899 and the coule had: Edward, Fleetwood, Linnie Genord, and Vercy. My grandfather is Genord and he married Madeline Brown/Porter around 1933. They had 13 kids and one passed in infancy so they raised 12: LJ, Pearl "Ezell"(deceased), Samuel "Edmond" (deceased), Genord Jr, Perry "Winston", Vivian, Vercy "Marie", Bernice, Edna, Fleet, Lilla Mae and Charles. My mother is Bernice.

Indeed, research of slaveholders often required to validate our history. Since there are no surname-Spencer slave owners in 1860 Walker County, why not research the Wyser(s)? When a younger male heads a family with an older female that often indicates parental connections? In other words, she may have been his mother? That's based strictly on my experience. Your tree could use more documentation, such as census records, death certificates, draft registrations, marriage certificates, etc. If you haven't already, logon https://familysearch.org/ and setup a "free" user account. Once completed, begin from familysearch homepage and click highlighted "Death". Enter Texas in "Death Place" box then click highlighted "Parents". Enter surnames ONLY, Spencer for the father and Jackson for the mother. Click "Search" and scan certificates for your relatives. Look for James, Curmilla, Surpheion and Sophronia.

The Spencers began in 1870 with my great great in Walker County, Huntsville living with a black family Ann Wysor and her 4 kids ranging from ages 4-13 years old. Not sure of the connection, he family moved to Midway, Madison County, TX about 1890 with his family and the family had been there ever since. I am looking for where he came from. James Spencer. In 1870 , he was listed as Jas Spencer.

I have other relatives: The Browns, originally Browning in 1870 and 1880.
My name is Carol Robinson Berkes daughter of John E. Robinson. I would like information on John E. Robinson and his mother Lucy Robinson Smith. I would also like information about John's father who last name is McVey. I do know his birth certificate was changed to show his father was Gordon Robinson(Lucy Robinson brother). I have two items GW Robinson used in his medical practice. I would like to send your dads graduation announcement and a photo that was in my fathers things.

Melissa (Missi) Walker.... Your post is old 2006 and I tried email you but the email on your post must be an old one. I would love to make contact with you since your grand mother is Geri Holcomb Barbee. I think my Cuz Kathy and I are real close to locating where the Old Shelton Graveyard used to be located, but would really love to make contact with Geri to see if the location is where she thinks it used to be and possibly in what timeframe she thinks it was distroyed. I assume it must have been after Calvin Horton was buried there ca 1899. If we can find the location where it 'used to be" we wish to put a memorial stone in that area and list anyone we know was previously buried there. Since Stephen & Dartha Shelton (my 3rd great grandparents died between 1860 census and prior to January 1868 and Calvin was buried there ca 1899 then that means it was a cemetery at a minimum from 1868-1899 and surely others besides these 3 persons were buried there prior to demise (whenever that may have been after 1899 timeframe).

Anyone reading this that knows how to conact Melissa and/or her grandmother Geri Holcomb Barbee, PLEASE EMAIL ME:
lynda@tableshuffleboard.org

Lynda Lehmann-French & Kathy Shelton Research updates to Shelton/Horton connection and Old Shelton Graveyard:

My Cuz Kathy Shelton and I have recently found much more information regarding the Old Shelton place (1854-1875) which is where we assume is the location of the Old Shelton Graveyard that reportedly was distroyed (unless Geri Holcomb Barbee contact can be made, as she did not mention in the Madison County History Book Vol. II where/how/why the Old Shelton Graveyard was located nor how/when it was reportedly distroyed). Geri's writeup for the history book indicates that both Stephen & Dartha Shelton and Dorothy Shelton-Colquitt-Tyler-Hall's 2nd husband (Calvin J "Logan" Horton) was buried. My records indicate that Calvin J Logan Horton died ca 1899/1900 so that would mean (if true) that the Old Shelton Graveyard was not yet distroyed until after that. Stephen and Dartha Shelton were both deceased prior to Jan. 1868 (from recent deed records me and cuz Kathy have been evaluating). Stephen & Darta were alive in the 1860 Leona Postal area of Leon County, Texas (but were deceased prior to Jan. 1868 per recently found land documents) with only child still living in the household with them in 1860 being my 2nd great grandfather: John Elbert Shelton. John married in 1868-1869 timeframe to Sarah Frances Byrd, as they are found in the 1870 Madisonville, Madison County, Texas census living next door to John's widowed sister Frances Shelton-Kirkpatrick-Brown. So, sometime between the 1860 census and Jan 1868 both Stephen & Dartha were deceased (and reportedly buried in the Old Shelton Graveyard).

New Findings:
1) The 845 (MOL) property was purchased by Stephen Shelton on April 3, 1854 for $2,400 from Haratio Wooward and wife Sarah. The land was located facing Old San Antonio Road in the SW corner of the Mark Copeland Survey A-4 (a portion of Mark Copeland's original Republic of Texas grant for 4,428.4 acres).

Note: Prior to Jan. 25, 1868 both Stephen & Dartha had passed away and the 5 living children inherited 1/5 each of the Shelton Place (as referred to in the newly found deeds).

2) JANUARY 25, 1868: son John Elbert Shelton sold his 1/5 to Richard Monroe Ewing for $260

3) MARCH 20, 1869: daughters Frances Shelton-Kirkpatrick-Brown and Rebecca Shelton-Jones-Shanksand her spouse J.A. Shanks (James Alexander Shanks)sold both of their 1/5 to their brother William Shelton.

4) JULY 20, 1868: son Thomas Shelton sold his 1/5 to Richard Monroe Ewing.

5) NOVEMBER 9, 1869: William sold 1/5 to Richard Monroe Ewing.

6) JANUARY 23, 1875: William sold the remainder still owned by him to Richard Monroe Ewing for $1,267.00 (which included joint tenancy clauses).

So, the old Shelton Place by Jan 1875 was owned fully by Richard Monroe Ewing, who was the son of Samual Ewing (who is buried sseveral miles west of the old Shelton Place in Rogers Prairie Cemetery). Rogers Prairie Cemetery is just .1 miles off of the OSR (which was referred to as the Rogers Prairie Township) just outside of today's Normangee.

I have ordered a historical map of Leon County which was reportedly shipped yesterday which will help further pin point the Shelton Place property location, but with the maps I have thusfar we know the Mark Copeland Survey A-4 SW Corner) is east of the old Rogers Prairie Township and is west of IH 45 on OSR facing the Madison county line (so the property was facing OSR and in Leon County with other side of OSR being Madison county (near the county line - reason some maps have a portion labeled on the OSR trail as county line.

If anyone has contact info for Geri Holcomb-Barbee who submitted the history ca 1980's to the Madison County History Book Vol II, please have her get in touch with me.

My cousin Kathy Shelton & I dearly want to be able to find out more about the location and demise of the Old Shelton Graveyard (eg, was it on the Shelton Place or on property owned possibly by the Ewing's, Horton's or ???) as we would like to be able to put a memorial stone in the area where they were buried listing those known to have been buried in the Old Shelton Graveyard.

My direct email is: lynda@tableshuffleboard.org

PS: If anyone has photos to share with us that would be great too and/or any info about son William Shelton (as we think we may have found him in Gillespie County later cenus and that possibly William never married and/or had any children (but we are not sure that the two census records we have found is absolutely our William Shelton (but age matches up), it is just a possibility).

Dorothy Catherine (1859-1949) married Charlie Colquit, the brother of Oscar Branch Colquit, who was the 25th governor of Texas.

My research shows that Thomas Jefferson Colquitt is the father Oscar B the Governor. This would refute the Vincent F connection. Searching for family records to verify if Oscar and Charlie were indeed brothers or if the line split somewhere.
