There is a "ray of hope"! Your Haynes may have lived in the area of Titus that became Morris County? Found Morris County marriages: Lucinda Haynes to John Davis (10 Apr 1878), Martha Haynes to J. H. Charlton (9 Jun 1879), "Sindrella" Haynes to "Tas" Mitchel (28 Feb 1877), and J. K. P. Haynes to Sarah Hathhorn (6 Mar 1878). Andrew J. Haynes found 1880 Morris County.

Information on the Haynes siblings can be found by clicking on individual names to display suggested records. For example: Cinderella (19 Sep 1857 - 20 Aug 1936) wed Tassel F. Mitchell (8 Aug 1852 - 21 Aug 1935). They share a double heastone in Little River, AR.

You may have to employ the Serenity Prayer on this one? Titus County Courthouse was destroyed by arson, 20 Sep 1895. All records were lost! Officials tried to fill the void by replicating records that had been transferred to Morris and Franklin Counties. Morris was created 23 Mar 1875 and Franklin on 8 Mar 1875. If your relatives resided in either of the newly created (1875) counties, there might be hope?

His Parents, Siblings Unknown. Would like to Know who his Parents and Siblings were. (My Brick Wall).

Married (1875-1880) in Texas (Can Not find a record of it).
Surname Haynes:
Mariah Louisa Haynes
Born 1860 Texas
Her Parents George W.L. Haynes and Sarah Clark
I have Titus County Census Records of them from 1850, 1860 & 1870...But Nothing after that. (Missing Information from 1871-1899) On the both of Them as well as Her parents and Siblings. Looking for any Information During this time and after on Her parents and Siblings.

Napoleon and Mariah next showed up in 1900 & 1910 Oklahoma Indian Territory Census Records in What is Present day Atoka County, Oklahoma.
I have their Information after that time.

I do have other Relatives working on this same Family line and we all are at the same Brick Wall. Their names are Rhonda Blackerby and Phyllis Conry. Please Do Not Send us Each other Links or Information, I/we appreciate it.

Thanks! I might have to make a visit to Franklin County someday, but if the records burned, I am out of luck. None of the children of this marriage knew the name of their mother as she died when they were quite young and their father remarried almost immediately. The earliest records for Franklin that I can find are 1875 and the county is not on the 1870 census records, so I am presuming the county was not established until 1875. Fires are the bane of genealogy! Thank you for the info about the fires. You have saved me some dead end hours!

That's going to be a difficult search! Franklin and Morris were seperated from Titus County, Mar 1875. Titus County Courthouse and all records were destroyed by an arsonist, 20 Sep 1895. Titus County records were "reconstructed" from those transferred to Franklin and Morris. Understandably, there are missing documents. Your best hope might be Franklin County but the marriage took place prior to its creation?

Hello,

I am currently several chapters into writing a book about the 22nd Texas Infantry (aka Hubbard’s Regiment).

Since Titus County provided many of its soldiers, it is important to accurately document the families and the towns they called home.

I am looking for extra stories about the personal lives of soldiers, photos, etc …. If there is specific info you would like included, please let me know.

Any suggestions regarding contacts or information for research would be greatly appreciated. I intend on including A LOT of information about all its soldiers

Finally, if you are a direct descendant of a soldier in Hubbard’s Regiment, I will include your photo and info.

Of course, all submissions will be credited in the text of the book.

The book should be ready by the end of this year.

Hi Mary, I too had Patterson relatives from Titus County, TX. My great grandfather was William Jeffrey Patterson b. 13 Jan 1827 in Georgia; married Charlotte "Lottie" Ellis Foshee 03 Aug 1865 in Miltown, Chambers Co., Alabama. He had been an officer in the Civil War. They moved to Titus county, TX about 1878 until their deaths in 1903. They had 9 children:

William White and Mattie Price were married on 13 Aug 1888. The Bowie county courthouse burned down in January of 1889.

I am wondering if the family even knew about Mattie's passing or if the family possibly disowned her. Possibly Lew Aronson did not know of the Price family in Texas.

I have written to some orphanages in Chicago and am awaiting a response. I am hoping there might be some more information there.

Yes, we believe that Jeanette's father was Samuel Wise.

Accept my humble apology and thank you for providing insight to Mattie Lee's career and background.

I know that the Bowie website has marriage records online beginning with the year of 1888. I wonder if the license was obtained in another county ?

I was aware of the fire at the Bowie courthouse as that is probably where one set of my great grand's married as my grandfather was born in Bowie county in 1879. I've been there to check and learned about the fire.

I find it sad that Jeanette and Charles White were left in the care of the Riffle's when Mattie had family in Texas. Perhaps there was another story behind that decision.

I know you wish there was someway of determining who William W White was and his history. Now that I know part of the story I wonder if he was from the east Texas area at all. Another thought I now have is that Jeanette was daughter of Sam Wise and Mattie Lee thought it simpler to just give her the White surname.

"our staid church-going people and the citizens generally, were yesterday morning quite interested in a romantically romantic affair, in which cupid cut wild pranks and the course of true love did not run smooth. Last week the bills and posters were distributed and stuck up, announcing the appearance at city hall, on Saturday evening, of Miss Mattie Lee Price, the famous magnetic girl, fifteen years old, and only weighting 110 pounds. She and her father arrived on the weswt bound train at noon Saturday,and that night gave an exhibition of her powers to an audience who was pleased with her performances. But it appears there was something else to happen, which was not "down on the bills", as the denoucment showed. Early yesterday morning the propsective groom, who had arrived a day or two ago, procured his license, and armed with the authority of the law, he went forth to meet the adored of his heart. His name was Wise, a traveling salesman, representing a Savannah house. But the fates seemed to be against them. as her father missed her from their stopping place at the lower Fraleigh house and started in pursuit. Coming up Horry street, and near the corner of Rutledge, he saw a large crowd gathered in front of the upper Fraleigh house, and , thinking perhaps she might be in there, went in. The groom had been locked in the pantry, while the girl was in another room. The father, exceedingly wroth, tried to persuade his daughter not to marry Wise, but she was determined, and said if she did not marry him, she would not fulfill any more engagements. Mr Price tried to obtain legal redress, but it being Sunday no papers could be made out. It was finally decided by all to post post the marriage until Wednesday. But in the afternoon the couple, accompanied by sympathizing friends, met at or near Lake Rachel, about a mile from town, where the knot was tied by that urbane justice of the peace, Mr. T. T. Ellison, and the happy couple returned to the town, where they received the hearty congratulations of friends. Mrs. Wise will continue her engagements as far as Tallahassee, where she will retire. She is a pretty, modest and unassuming young lady, and the groom is spoken of as being a gen-man in every way and quite well off.

Texarkana News: Married - At the Cosmopolitan Hotel, in Texarkana, Texas, on Monday, at 3 o'clock p. m., August 13th, 1888, by Rev. Chas. F (?) Lamb (?), Mr. W. W. White to Miss Mattie Lee Price.The above records the marriage of the "Magnetic Girl" to her manager. Mr. Clifford, who has been her manager, and who accompanied her to our city, will leave for Colorado. Mr. and Mrs. White left yesterday on a bridal tour. The bride is the divorced wife of a Mr. Wise."

The Texarkana TX and Mt Pleasant TX courthouses both burned down, so no official records survive.

Some twenty-six years ago I was on the bill with Mattie Lee Price, who, though less well known, was in many ways superior to either Miss
Hurst or Miss Abbott. For a time she was a sensation of the highest order, for which thanks were largely due to the management of her
husband, a wonderful lecturer and a thorough showman. I think his name was White. He "sold" the act as no other man has sold an act before or since. Harry Houdini
Houdini worked together at Kohl and Middleton's,
Chicago, and the following week at Burton's Museum, Milwaukee; but when we made
the next jump I found that White was not along. They had had a family squabble, the
other apex of the triangle being a circus grafter who ``shibbolethed'' at some of the
``brace games,'' which at that time had police protection, so far as that could be given.
He had interfered between the couple, and was, I am sorry to say, quite successful as an interferer;
but he was a diabolical failure when he attempted to duplicate White's work as lecturer, and the act,
after playing a date or two, sank out of sight and I have heard nothing more of her professionally.

1891, we find W. W. White and Mattie Lee Price travelling on a ship to Ireland as passengers.

"MISS MATTIE LEE PRICE V. MRS. ABBOTT
Mr. W. W. White, the manager of Miss Price, the lady magnet, at present performing in this city, writes to us a direct denial of the statements of "L. H. Oldham, M.D.," which appeared in our columns yesterday, maintaining that Miss Price had been only three years before the public and was merely an imitator of Mrs. Abbott. Mr. White writes that he himself has accompanied Miss Price for over five years, and that she has in her possession a silver cup presented to her by the Governor of Georgia over ten years ago. "I am well acquainted with Mrs. Abbott's first manager," continues Mr. White, "and know that her first public performance was given less than four years ago. She may have given some private tests to of it."

Do you need proof of the third marriage also?

Mattie Lee Price was the daughter of George Washington Price and his first wife.

The Charles & Jenny were not from Illinois. The Riffles probably thought that they were because their stepfather, Louis Aronson was likely from Chicago. They were orphans at this point in time and had just been placed in the Riffle household. Charles always said he was born in Mt Pleasant TX. Jenny thought she was born in Indiana.

The circus history information that you quoted are family legends that may not be exactly correct. The William Donovan information came from me because he also went by the name of William White. However, based on William Donovan's second marriage and that wife's death, we no longer believe that William Donovan is the father. Also the person who died in Fond du Lac WI appears to be unrelated.

Jeanette thought that she was named after her mother. That is why they thought her mother's name was Leona. Jeanette's mortuary record does say that her mother was MaddieLee Price. Where Charles Joseph White's marriage record states that his mother was Mattie Lee Price.

Charles Joseph White did not state his correct birthdate on his records. We cannot rely on his dates as they range from 1886 (the same year as his sister) 1887 and 1889 in the earliest records. We believe the earliest records because of the marriage to W W White. Charles Joseph White is my husband's grandfather. Charles J. White's wife was older than he was.

It is difficult to trace performers who were always travelling and do not appear in census records. It is equally difficult to trace orphans.

I hope that someone can provide some help on identifying W. W. White.

I just do not think the above Mattie L Price was the right person, my opinion.

Mattie Lee did not marry W W White in Texarkana, Bowie County in 1888 nor Texarkana, Miller Co AR; twin cities. Her siblings married in VZ county if she was indeed the Mattie Price from Murray Co GA daughter of George William Price and unknown wife.

Sandpoint, Idaho - Funeral services for Charles E Riffle, 90, who died Thursday at a Sandpoint hospital, will be at 2pm Tuesday at the Moon Funeral Chapel with burial at the Pinecrest Memorial Park. Mr. Riffle was born Jul 22 1876 at Wellsville NY. He married Jeanette White at Dickinson NE in 1901. She died in 1958. Coming to Sandpoint in 1916, Mr. Riffle worked for the L D McFarland Pole Co, the Brown mill and at Farragut Naval Base from 1943 to 1946. He had lived at the Sandpoint Manor since 1961. Surviving are 4 sons, Raymond of Sandpoint; Clarence of Thompson Falls MT; Earl of Coeur d'Alene, and Floyd of Auburn WA. Three daughters Mrs Hazel Grove and Mrs. Grace Wightman both of Tonawanda NY and Mrs. Ruby Woodard of Marina CA. 20 grandchildren and a number of great and great-great grandchildren.

Becky Bral, owner of Bral Family and Friends tree has posted copy of marriage license of Ernest Riffle age 27 of Dickinson ND and Jennie White age 18 of Dickinson ND dated 31 Dec 1903. This person says that Jeanette Leona was born in Kalamazoo MI 15 July 1886 based on the location of the circus at that time.

Jeanette Leona White was born to "Leona" and "William Donovan" who changed his name to "White," his step-father's name. Leona was supposidly a bare back horse rider who ran away from the Indian Reservation. They were with the circus. Jeanette listed her birthday as July 15, 1886. If this is accurate (which could be just a guess-date), then she would have been born in the city of Kalamazoo, Mich.where the circus was on that day. Jeanette's Father (William Donovan AKA Billy White) died overseas, possibly England, 1899

According to the howell Family Tree owned by showell631? William White's 1st wife was a Leona born IL and died in Fond du Lac, WI in 1896 and William was born abt 1861 and death Sept 1899 in Newcastle upon tyne, Northumberland England.

It appears that folk's don't have all of the facts as W W White was already married to Mattie Lee about 10 yrs before this reported death in Wisconsin.

Searching for information on the parents and family of Charles Joseph WHITE b. Feb 14 1889 Mt. Pleasant, Titus, TX.
Charles & Jenny White were orphaned in 1899 and raised by a family named Riffle in Wisconsin. His sister (half sister) Jeanette Leona White b. 1886 married one of the Riffle sons.
Charles' parents were Mattie Lee Price and William W. White. Mattie & William W. White were married in Texarkana TX in 1888.
Her first husband was Samuel Wise and her husband in 1899 was Louis Aronson.
Mattie Lee Price Wise White Aronson died in 1899 in London. Lew Aronson and Mattie Lee Price were performing for the Barnum & Bailey Circus at this time.
Charles married Nora Jesme in 1914 at Los Angeles County CA. They were in Grant County ND in 1917. He moved to Los Angeles County CA where he died in 1932.
The Price family moved to Van Zandt County TX in 1894 from Murray County GA and later to Upshur County TX.
Any help with this family in Titus County TX or the surrounding area would be appreciated.

W. W. White name is probably William W. White based upon Charles Joseph White’s marriage and death certificate.
The last thing I find on W. W. White is when he was on an ocean liner with Mattie Lee Price in 1891 heading for Ireland. He was likely performing with Mattie until around 1894, according to Harry Houdini’s book.

My grandfather's sister was Mattie Chapman, who married Hubert Schuler.

Contact the Mt. Pleasant Public Library about any possible obituaries. They started project many years ago in which hey copied local obituaries onto index cards and filed them alphabetically. However, I don't think there were any going back to 1908. Contact them anyway and ask.

I am not related and can not help with obit. She was born after the 1880 census, the 1890 census burned in 1921 and she married in Titus county Nov 1899, not found by me in 1900 census.

Ross B Williams shows up in Titus county 1910 census with 2nd wife Rosa Mae Schular married 31 July 1909 Titus County. Wm Hugh Williams was not listed with father in 1920 census in Red River county. He was in Wilson, Choctaw County OK in 1920 not yet married.
