I am looking for information on a Frank J. Bischoff, who was born in "New Bennington, VT". Is there even a New Bennington? I could not find one on a map. He must have gone to Maine at some point, and eventually made his way to NYC. All of this is from the only information I have about him, his son's marriage records. I'm thinking Frank might be a nickname? and maybe Bischoff isn't the way it was originally spelled? I'm not sure. I can not find him in any records, his wife (Amelia Douglas, though I am not sure if she ever lived in VT.)

Marcus,
Re: Pension file for Charles Partlow

I received a copy of his complete file in Feb 2006. You are correct; he did receive a pension. However, when he filed for an increase and Sophia filed, it was denied because he "rendered only sixty-six days actual service"

In a letter from the Commissioner of Pensions, it starts
with ..."was granted a pension under the act of June 27, 1890, on December 18, 1899. On August 2, 1910, after due notice, as required by law, his name was dropped from the pension roll on the ground that recent reports from the War Department showed he did not render ninety days of service during the war of the rebellion...."

I've found some info and family online, but not sure how documented it is. Are you related to this line? Do you have any siblings of Charles?

Thank you very much for your response.
Looking for info for Charles and his family. Thank you, Brenda Drowne

This Charles on the 1850 census of Pownal, Benning Co., VT is a son of David and Hannah [last name unknown] PARTLOW. He does not appear to be related to the Charles Partlow b abt 1840, son of James and Eleanor [VanDyke] Partlow.

I have what appears to be a sample copy of Webb's 1872 book "Buffalo Land." Towards the back there is a section where Truman F. Greenslet wrote down who ordered copies. These were listed as: D. S. Bishop, Readsboro; T. Greenslet, Readsboro; Warner Parson, Stamford; and Salem Thayer, Readsboro. On the next pages (which were blank), it appears that he made an accounting of apple purchases and sales from someone named Doolittle. These sales were dated September through October 1881. A few pages later there are notes about apples from H Y Andrews' place and from Doolittle. On another page there is a listing of apples from G. F. Pardies (?) Finally, there is a note about Alfred Bristol. I believe the notes about apple sales may refer to Wallingford, CT as that is where Truman lived after leaving Readsboro.

I have a book published in 1858 called "Gleanings from School-Life Experience..." by Hiram Orcutt. It was presented to Truman F. Greenslet, Readsboro, VT. I believe the rest of the inscription reads,"Presented by Clara A. Lord." I believe this is the younger Truman F. Greenslet who eventually moved to Wallingford, CT. But who is Clara A. Lord? Was she a teacher in Readsboro?

Those of you looking for the parents of "Polly Fisher b. 1823 prob. in VT" have you had any luck and found them? This is a long shot but I have in my ancestry a Polleyanna Luretha Fisher b. 31 Jan 1828 in Guilford, Windham, VT, daughter of Vardis John Fisher and Abbie (Nabby) Converse. The Vardis Fisher family listed in the 1830 USA census would seem to indicate that Polly had already died, but the 1840 USA census has a female with the family of the right age to be her. We do not know anything more about her and I'm wondering IF my Polleyanna could possibly be your "Polly Fisher"?

Vardis John Fisher's parents were David Fisher and Lydia Barney. We know that Lydia was b. 9 May 1759 in Rehoboth, MA, but we do not know where David came from. There has been extensive research done on this family. To read my cousin, Anna Hetzel's research notes go to http://ourancestorsweb.com/vardisjohnfishernotes.html

Perhaps someone out there can help us find David's parents and more information about Polleyanna Luretha Fisher.

Hi There,

I have been researching this WOODARD/WOODWARD line for 20 years. Robert B. WOODWARD is buried in Bennington, VT. His father TITUS WOODARD, son of ALPHEUS WOODARD was a cousin to my 5th great-grandfather NOAH WOODARD III. I found Robert listed in some Sandgate, VT land records along with Titus, Samuel, Alpheus and Alvah. Also will have to dig through my archives, I have a Will for Alpheus J. WOODWARD (died 1884, buried Sandgate Center Cemetery, Sandgate, VT). He was living in Sandgate, VT and also later in life in Boone Co., Illinois. If you look at the 1880 Census on Ancestry, go to Poplar Grove, Boone Co., Illinois and you will find Robert living with A.S (should be A. J, for Alpheus James Woodward) and listed as his brother, and widowed. In the Will of Alpheus it mentions his property in Poplar Grove, Illinois. Robert's wife Dinah Bentley died in 1876 in Sandgate if I remember correctly. Also believe in one of the Sandgate land records it mentions Alpheus as a son of Titus. So I put two and two together once I found Robert living with Alpheus in 1880. Titus died in 1870 in Sandgate, Vt and is listed in their death records. I have been to his gravestone. I have traced all known descendants of Titus Woodard. He had several sons. Samuel (1809-1894) is buried in West Arlington Cemetery, on Rte 313, West Arlington, VT (my 2nd great-grandfather Warren Asaph Woodard is buried there as well, near Samuel's stone. Alpheus James Woodward and wife Hannah are buried in Sandgate Center Cemetery. Another son was JOSHUA WICKS WOODARD, (1803-1876) and brother CURTIS WOODARD 1805-1877) are listed on same stone in Sandgate Center Cemetery. Alpheus J. Woodward (listed as DR. in several sources) was nearly well-to-do for his time. Another son ALVAH WOODWARD, born ca. 1818 died out in Boone Co.,Illinois. I will have to look up his info. I also found his cemetery record with dates of birth and death. Titus Woodard was born ca. 1772 CT; died 1870 Sandgate, VT. His grandfather NOAH WOODARD/WOODWARD SR. born 1718, Canterbury, Windham Co., CT; died 26 MAY 1792, Sandgate, Bennington Co., VT. I have Noah's Will and several land records. He signed a Patriot's Oath during American Revolution (was too old to fight). His son NOAH WOODARD JR 1744-1834, my 6th gr-grand) was a veteran of the Revolution. I could never find Alpheus (Noah Jr.'s older brother) date or place of death. Well, hope some of this helps. You can e-mail me directly at nancyleigh324@adelphia.net.

Todd

P.S. A few years ago I corresponded and met a descendant of JOSHUA WICKS WOODARD, he lives in Michigan where many of Joshua's descendants lived. He had done alot of research on Titus Woodard. I'll try to dig out his name and contact info. Titus wife was BETSY (WICKS/WEEKS) WOODARD. She is buried in Sandgate as well.

I am assisting my wife,Barbara, in researching her Woodward ancestors. So far we have:
Frank R -b 1891 Bennington, Vt
Fred R- b 1869 Bennington, Vt
Myron H- b 1840 Sandgate, Vt
Robert B- b abt 1813

We hit a wall with Robert B. We know from Myron's death certificate that his father was Robert and his mother was Dinah Bentley. Also from census data we know that Robert was born about 1813. We also found some transactions in Sandgate land records involving Robert, Samuel and Alvah Woodward. What we learned from your post is that Robert is the son of Titus and Samuel and Alvah are his his brothers. This is a great breakthrough for us. Thank you. We would really appreciate knowing how you established this. We have been looking for months with no success.

Hi Diana,

I was just looking through the Day message board to see if there were any new posts re our Day ancestors and I looked at our correspondence again. I can't remember if we corresponded off-board, but I have found some more information since we wrote here.

You may have found this out already, but the Rosina Day you mentioned, daughter of Russell Day and Ann Chapman married Josiah Clark, who was a brother of Silas Clark who married Nancy Day (my ancestors).

I went to Freeport, IL this summer where most of the Clarks wound up. Warren Chapman Clark and Silas Day Clark, sons of Silas Clark and Nancy Day, moved to Freeport around 1850, my ggrandfather Silas Polley, son of Salome Clark Polley, sister of Warren and Silas D. moved there after the Civil War. Sophronia Clark Dean, another sister, and her husband Seba Dean moved there about 1870-something The first born sister Nancy Clark Goo was buried there along with a daughter who was married to a Dr. Beebe.

Saloma Clark Polley was buried there, or has a memory stone there. I don't think she ever lived in Freeport though, as she was listed as a resident of the Cortland CO NY poorhouse in the 1870 census and died in 1870. Warren Clark's obit said he had all his siblings buried together. I know the brothers were well-to-do and apparently generous to family members.

Warren Clark owned the Brewster House, the hotel where Stephen Douglas and Abraham Lincoln stayed during their debate in Freeport in 1858. According to one of Warren's
daughter's obit, meeting Abraham Lincoln there was a lasting memory for her.

I got obituaries for many of the Clark family members at the Freeport Library during my visit and also took photos of graves in the Freeport City Cemetery.

Let me know if you are interested in any of this. BTW, re the name Rosina. It has been carried down in many generations in that family. Rosina Day, Rosina Clark, my ggrandfather's sister was Nancy Rosina Polley, and there's another Rosina I just can't remember right now. But I believe there were four generations of Rosinas.

Barbara McDonald

I am looking for parents or other relatives of Elias Russell Cardell. He was born on 28 Feb 1840 in White Chapel?, Vermont which I believe may have been in Bennington County (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~vermontgen...). In 1861, he enlisted in the 10th IA Infantry at Malcom, Poweshiek County, Iowa. In 1880, he was living at Walnut Grove, Greene County, Missouri. In 1900, he was living at Pleasant Hope, Polk County, Missouri. He died in 1905 at Wichita, Sedgwick County, Kansas. He married Disa Rose Tinsley and had 8 children: William, Charles, Phillip, Leota, Lena, Myrtie, Everett, & John.

I would really appreciate any information anybody has on the family of Elias.

Thank you very much!

Grant

PATTERSON - EATON in Manchester, 1900, 1910?

Trying to find any additional info on:

John PATTERSON born in Dec 1845 at Canada. He married Clarissa Eaton, daughter of John Eaton and Susan (--?--), before 1873 at Vermont. He died after 6 May 1910 at Bennington Co, Vermont.

He appeared on the census of 1900 at Manchester, Bennington Co, Vermont; John N. Patterson, b. Dec 1845 Canada, 54, wife Clara M., b. Feb 1846, 54, married 33 years, 6 children, 1 living; John J., 18, Susan Eaton, 76, wid, mother in law, had 4 children, 2 living. He appeared on the census of 6 May 1910 at Manchester, Bennington Co, Vermont; John N. Patterson, 64, Matilda C, 64. They had been married 45 years with 6 children, with none living in 1910. John gave his father's birthplace as "at sea".

Clarissa EATON was born circa 1846 at Vermont.
Children of John2 Patterson and Clarissa Eaton were as follows:

(--?--) PATTERSON born on 10 Aug 1873 at Shaftsbury, Bennington Co, Vermont.

John J. PATTERSON was born on 25 Sep 1881 at Dorset, Vermont; His birth record indicates John was b. Canada and Carrie was b. Manchester. He died on 11 Apr 1906 at Manchester, Bennington Co, Vermont, at age 24; His mother was named as Clara Eaton, b. Manchester, and father was John Patterson, b. Alburgh, VT.

I'm trying to figure out if John Patterson (1845-aft 1910) died in Manchester? If any of you have access to cem records, or vital records, I'd love a quick check. I could send money to the Manchester TC, but would like to get a better idea that he may have died there.

Can't find any Pattersons in Manchester in 1910, so they may have died, or -- moved.

Any hints appreciated.

Pam Wood Waugh
I have a Rusmeyer West born in Conn. (1800 census, N.Y.) The page is missing for any more information. He had a son named Robert Rusmeyer West born in N.Y. on 8 Oct 1827. He was Irish.? Could he be a father or brother to your John? Robert Rusmeyer West settled in Waverly, Colorado and was married to Mary Jane Bebee. They had 11 Children. He is buried in Fort Collins, Colorado. I hope we can correct these two people.
