My 3rd great-grandmother was Mary Caron who I believe was born in Brownington, VT in 1856. She was married to Gilbert Collins. Her parents were Nelson Caron and Harriet Young - both of whom I believe were born in Canada. I wonder if Peter is Nelson's father. I have not had any luck confirming who Nelson's father was. A 1870 Census shows Nelson and Harriet living in Brownington, Vermont with the following children;Nelson, Frank, Mary, Fredd, Lewis, Loiza, and Edward Caron.

They both died in Iowa.

Not sure this is the same Jeremiah Norton that you said was born in 1798, but the fact that my great-great grandfather's father was named Nathan Norton.
Judy or anyone who may own a copy of the Charleston Cemetery Listings, would you please check for an Andrew BEAN or any BEAN as they are likely related to said Andrew. Also, a Hannah (BRYER/BRIER/BRIAR) HUTCHINSON, 2nd wife of Samuel HUTCHINSON (1st wife Delight WOODBURY), 1st wife of/only wife of Andrew BEAN. Believe Andrew died in Charleston, know that Samuel died in Charleston, not sure where Hannah died but she is not in the 1870 census. Several of Andrew and Hannah's children removed to Essex County, MA but I have not found her there either. Their dauther Mary Jane married Benjamin Franklin HAMILTON and remained in the Charleston/Derby area.

Thanks for any assistance,
Cherryl Ball
Frisco, TX

Yes, I have a copy of Polly Place Judd's death in MA. Her son Don Judd moved to the area to work. Enoch Judd had died sometime before so Polly moved to MA with Don. Polly's body was returned to Jay, VT., to be buried close to Enoch Judd. None of the researchers for the Place family had Polly as a child of Benjamin and Phebe until this record was discovered. Everyone had Enoch Judd married to a Polly, but we didn't have a last name and no record could be found in Orleans County. So, someone figured out she might have moved with Don. A call to the town clerk in Carlyle,MA., confirmed this and there was a death record which I purchased. It was a shocker. Polly was the second child born to Benjamin and Phebe. Their first three children are very close in age.
My email address is mdomstead@att.net

I will post some more Judd deaths sometime today.

Thank you for sharing the information you have.

I have posted a query to the Quebec-Anglo list to see if someone might be able to give some clues to the Rexford-Judd connection.

On another subject -
I don't have your email address, and I have a death record for a Polly M. Judd (nee Place), wife of Enoch Judd. If you would like a copy, please let me know. Maybe you already have this record? This death record says Polly's parents are Benjamin & Phebe Place.

Greetings, I remember you with pleasure due to the information you shared whereby I could place Jule and Ebenezer Judd in Stanstead County Quebec, in the 1830's.

I wrote in error regarding Ebenezer Judd's wife Phebe Warner. I do not have a place of burial for her, and I do not know if she removed into the Eastern Townships. Here is what I have that is correct.

Rexford-Judd Burial Ground, dated 1807, at Judd's Point, Stanstead County Quebec. Abandoned and overgrown but stones are still easy to read. Land now belongs to Derek Price.

1.Judd, Annis, d: 1 Dec 1807, age: 40th yr. wife of Hawkins Judd.

2. Judd, Mary, d: 5 Jan 1818, age: 97th yr. wife of Ebenezer Judd. (mother of Ebenezer (Jule's father) and Polly Judd Alden)

3. Rexford, Catherine, d: 13 Aug 1828, age: 68th yr. wife of Benjamin Rexford.

Deaths 1815-1879 in District of Saint-Francis, A-K, Vol. 1. From the Church Records of sixteen religious denominations, Catholics not included.

Judd, Hawkin (M) farmer, Magog
d: 07-04-1857 Buried: 09-04-1857
Calvinist Baptist
Stanstead County- Hatley, Quebec
Pere:0 Mere:0
Conj: Mme Judd 0
TEM:(witnesses)
Francis Judd (fils) & Osman Judd (fils)
Mme Francis Judd Mme Osman Judd

Judd, Jeannette Isabella Winn (F), Stanstead
d: 27-05-1866 Buried: 29-05-1866
Anglican
Canton Stanstead
P.0 M.0
CONJ: James H. Jones omis & Robert Vincent omis

This all I have at this time for the Judd's. I would like to learn if there is a connection between the Judd family living in the Eastern Townships and the Rexford family living in the same area. A Township researcher for the Archives said that Hawkins Judd was born in Watertown, Connecticut, in 1765, son of Ebenezer and Mary Hawkins Judd, and he was given his mother's maiden name.
I would appreciate it if you discover any new data that you kindly inform me of the same.

Mary was sister to Ebenezer and aunt to Jule.

I would like the information on Hawkins' death and also the Mary Warner Judd you mentioned.
David, I found the death records of Jule Judd and his father Ebenezer Judd. Both are in Deaths 1815-1879 District of Saint Francis, from the Church Records of sixteen religious demoninations, Catholics not included, Volume 1 A-K. This book is found at the Montreal Branch of the Quebec National Archives.

Judd, Ebenezer (M) 98 yrs. Stanstead
Died: 31-03-1845 Buried: 02-04-1845
Free Will Baptist Church, Hatley, Stanstead County Quebec
Witnesses:
Daniel Miller
Rebecca Miller

In the same book is found the following.

Judd, Jule (M) 88 yrs, farmer, unmarried, Stanstead County
Died: 15-12-1861 Buried 18-12-1861
Calvinist Baptist Church
Georgeville
Witnesses:
George W. Brown, grandson
Charles Lemy, grandson-in-law

Hawkins Judd's death is also recorded in this book.

Hawkins Judd's wife Annis Butler and his mother, Ebenezer Judd's wife Mary Warner, are buried in the Rexford-Judd Cemetery. The Rexford name pops up often in connection with the Judd family, however, I cannot figure out the connection.

I am hoping for a Morgan resident/researcher or a Bartlett to have some info. I live in Florida and probably won't get to Vermont until next summer when I can walk and explore the cemeteries.

I will try the Town Clerk's office - just maybe I'll get lucky!
From the History of Vermont: natural, civil, and statistical ........... By Zadock Thompson and other sources.

Mohgas (Note spelling ?), a township in the eastern part of Orleans county, is in lat. 44° 51' nd long. 4° 58', and is bounded north by Holland and a part of Derby, easterly by Wheelock and Warner's gore, and southwest by Navy and part of Salem. It lies 52 miles northeast from Montpelier, and was chartered Nov. 6, 1780, to Jedediah Calderkin and others, by the name of Caldersbiirgh. The name was altered to Morgan Oct 10, 1801. The settlement of this township was commenced about the year 1800, by Nathan Wilcox. The town was organized in March, 1807, and Christopher Bartlett was first town clerk, and Rufus Stewart first representative. Seymour's lake, which is about four miles long and nearly 2 wide, lies in the central part.

Statistics: Population in 1840 was 422
Population in 2000 was approx 699.

When locals talk about Morgan they are referring to the Village Morgan Center located on VT. Hiway 111 near the lake, which is where the Morgan Center Cemetery is Located.

Coordinates (One point per USGS topographic map containing the feature, NAD83)
Sequence Latitude(DEC) Longitude(DEC) Latitude(DMS) Longitude(DMS) Map Name
1 44.9119920 -71.9814854 445443N 0715853W Morgan Center

This cemetery is very small I believe a ten minute walk will cover the area, to study it will take a little longer based on one's interest.

It appears that your subject of interest was associated mostly with the Village and could well be interned in that cemetery. Unfortunately this may be hard to verify.....reasons.

Record keeping was bad at best during that time period.

Many records were destroyed by fires, vaults as we know them today did not exist.

The Town clerks office was usually someone's home...... some Town clerks offices in Vermont remain that way today.

Vermont made an attempt to microfilm all known vital records, while that effort was good, it has been stated that money to accomplish the total effort was not sufficient.

As mentioned in the brief intro above, there were many boundary and name changes of the townships in the time period of interest be aware that what may have been called by one name my now be included into another township.

Accordingly the following cemeteries may be of interest.

Clark Cemetery (West Charleston), Gore Cemetery (West Charleston), Cargill Cemetery (Island Pond), Wilcox Cemetery, Frenchmans Lot Located between Morgan Center & Island Pond Latitude: 44.86083 : Longitude: -71.92889, Bruch Family Cemetery is a Cemetery in the (county of Orleans), located at latitude - longitude coordinates (also known as lat-long or GPS coordinates) of N 45.01282 and W -71.96093 near town of Holland, VT.
Information provided earlier by another VT. researcher is excellent, contacting the Town Clerk would be my first stop

Good luck in your effort.

Your post is old, however, just in case others are checking you have your information regarding Polly Camber wrong. She was the mother of Benjamin Place b 9-10-1810, in Potton or Brome, probably Potton, named parents Stephen Place and Mary (Polly) Camber. The children you have listed are not Polly's children, they are the children of Stephen Place of Bolton, Quebec and whomever his first wife was, and those of Stephen Place and second wife Hannah Magoon Randall. There is nothing to give evidence that Stephen Place of Bolton, was the father of Benjamin Place, nor is there known evidence that Polly Camber, whose husband was unk. Brown, ever had any children other than Benjamin Place. I have tried and tried to connect Stephen Place of Brome, and/or Stephen Brown of Jay, Vermont to Benjamin and Polly, all to no avail. Now, Mary (Polly) Camber Brown did not died until the 1870's, you are quoting the time frame for the death of Stephen Place's first wife. I believe her name was Sally Unk., but I am unsure. At the time of her death Polly, who went by the name Mary, was living with her son Benjamin in Jay, Vt., and she is buried in Jay. Her death record gave her name as Mary Polly Camber Brown, parents John Camber and Debra Data. In the late 1850's Polly traveled from Stanstead, Que., to Jay, VT., accompanied by one Amos Brown, she then deeded her farm in Jay, Vermont to her son Benjamin Place and his wife Phebe Judd Place with the stipulation she was to live with them and be given various "things" the remainder of her natural life. Eben Judd handled the legal details. Polly lived the remainder of her life with Benjamin, even after Phebe Judd Place died. Polly's death and cemetery records are at Jay. There are no marriage records for her there. Yet, she had to have received the farm as part of an inheritance from either a Place or a Brown. I do not live near Vermont, and the Jay office is so busy they cannot find time to search out and copy records showing from whom Polly received the farm. Such records should reveal who she was married to and under what conditions she received this land. It appears she may have lived in Stanstead, next to John Camber, father or brother, for many years. I have the record wherein she deeded the property to Benjamin Place and Phebe Judd. I have had contact with the family of Stephen Place and Hannah Magoon Randall and they never heard of Benjamin Place or Polly Camber. What is needed is for someone within the Jay area to go to the Town Clerk's Office in Jay, and do a search of the property and once found the name of her husband should be revealed, and a will can be sought for this person.

Not sure I can really add much that will help but I will acknowledge your message. My area of research is the Sisco families, some of whom are found in Jay and Troy. They intermarried into the Judd family which in turn got connected to the Place family. Hence I have picked up a few facts that may help. They are far from complete nor have I done any in depth digging into Place.

I show Benjamin Place b. abt 1810 Canada m. Phebe Judd b. abt. 1811 VT. (1870 census). Their family includes at least five - Benjamin 1838, Guy 1846, Amos 1849, Clara 1853, Mary Ann 1856 (all dates approximate).

Another possible connection that I have is between Abigail Judd and Washington Brown. Abigail was born abt 1809 so its likely Washington was of similar age. Abigail has a presence in Jay during her later marriages. Abigail may have met/married Washington in Westfield VT as she was born there and its not known when her parents moved to Jay.
I am descended from Samuel Brown (b. abt 1795, poss. Connecticut), who was apparently granted a homestead on Lake Memphremagog in Stanstead County, Quebec, in the early 19th Century (poss. circa 1815-1820). As I understand it, he tried farming there, and when he was unsuccessful at that, he moved to Massachussets circa 1840s where his son or sons worked in the mills there before the sons moved to Wisconsin to get their own homesteads for farming.

His wife’s name was Polly, but I don't know her maiden name. I have Samuel and Polly's names on two marriage certificates of their son Asahel, one in Lowell, Massachusetts, and one in Wisconsin. Neither have Polly's maiden name. She was born in Vermont.

Samuel and Polly had at least four children in Canada:

Samuel C. Brown (b. 1819 in Stanstead Co. m. Betsy T Merrill in Abbotsford, Quebec 5 Jul 1841)
Harriet/Rectina (these may have been separate sisters) (b. abt 1822 in Stanstead Co.) - m. James Covey in Stanstead Co. abt 1840)
Asahel Brown (b. 1827/8 in Stanstead Co d. 1902 Wisconsin.)
Francis S. Brown (b. 1830 in Stanstead Co. d. 1913 Wisconsin)

There may have been a daughter, Eleanor Butler Brown, (b. abt Mar. 1818-20 in Stanstead Co. m. Josiah Robbins in Wisconsin).

To the extent that they were affiliated with a church, I believe they were Methodist Episcopal.

I don't know if she is Benjamin Place's mother, but it seems possible from what I've read. I would like to correspond with anyone with information related to Polly and Samuel.

If you would like me to ask, I can find out specifics from Roy's daughter Jessie.

My parents always told me Roy was waiting until his wife was gone so she wouldn't be left on this earth without him. She died a few hours before him, then he followed.
