I think we have connected before. My Harris family lived in The Dover Historical house after 1900. Murry Harris's second,or maybe third wife, was Nellie Cook. I think they married about 1906. Murray had a wife Ella (Dennison) Harris who died in 1903. You can contact me Dianne-Cook@sbcglobal.net

I am looking for stories on the Harris family of Dover, Oliver & Rhoda, children James Madison m. Sibyl, Elliot m Betsey Snow and their children. Elliot's son Byron was a school teacher in Dover in the late 1800's. James & Sibyl had at least four children who all died young.

The only place I have seen anything was from the SICKLES person who has posted here and there about Caryl's.

Maybe Joel should be Joe which was shorten from Joseph.
Thanks for your reply!

I have been to the cemetary you mention...it is one of the strangest ones I have ever visited. Completely surrounded by trees and very hilly; small - about 50x100 feet (I'm not great at estimating dimensions).

The first time I visited, a young girl who lived next door showed me how to find it. It was late in the afternoon, the sun was beginning to set, and it had rained quite a bit earlier in the week. There is about a 15 foot drop from the front to back so it is quite hilly and, as I walked on it, the ground moved under my feet. Quite creepy!

If you would like any pictures from the cemetary, let me know as I live only about 45 minutes away.

Molly

Hi, Andrew,

WOW! I really didn't expect any responses since these posts were so old and was very surprised to get three!

Much of what I have collected fits in with your information.
I visited the Gowanda Historical Society (near Collins) and found the following info on the "Saunders" family file:
Joseph Saunders was a Free Will Baptist Minister and a soldier in the War of 1812. He and his wife, Polly, came to Western NY in 1836 from Vermont. Their children:
Mary 1810-1865 m. Samuel Warner, buried Foster Road, Collins
Martha 1817-1899 m. Joseph Chaffee 1812 - ?
female m. Pierce
Benjamin 1824-1885 m. Rosaltha Bates
Ruth 1827-1904 m. George Hawkins
Eliza 1828-1901 m. Sylvanus Bates II
Jacob 1830-1864 m, Catherine Walker and died in the Civil War at Cold Harbor.

I never found anything that listed Polly/Patty as Martha so wold love to have a copy of your family Bible page. Perhaps it was a common family name so she had a nickname.

There was also a note in the file from a woman from Jamestown, NY who wrote that "a branch of the Saunders family apparently came to the US during Colonial times from England, according to Nana" -- don't know who Nana is from the file.

I have a copy of the 1840 NY census for the town of Ashford in Cattaraugus County (quite near Collins) which has 3 Saunders families on one page: James, Nathan and Joseph.

In 1855 NY census, Joseph is listed in Collins as living with his daughter, Martha, and her children. His occupation is listed as Mason and he was born in New Hampshire.

Let me know what other info you may desire. So glad we connected!

Molly
Nathan Howard was born Feb. 24, 1771, Location and Parents unknown. Most likely he was a brother to Roswell Howard and a Chapin Howard. He married Betsey Gage b.Feb.24,1786, Hubbardston,Ma., the daughter of Asa Gage and Mary Polly Bolton. Betsey was married in 1805, previously to William Cobb b.Mar.29,1777, d.Jan.5,1813, Prob. Windham Co.,VT. Betsey had two children by him; William Cobb Jr. b.July 27,1806, who married Mary Ann Botsford Nov.5,1831, and Eliza Cobb b.June 26,1808,who married Asa Livermore Nov.2,1829. Betsey then had two more children by Nathan Howard; Jane Howard b.1819, who married Daniel Thomas April 20,1859? and Subbinus Howard b.May 10, 1824, who married Weltha Underwood. Roswell Howard b.Mar.19,1781, also married a daughter of Asa and Mary Gage, Eunice Bolton Gage on Nov.22,1803. Two of Chapin Howard's children married Cobbs. Aurelius Chapin Howard b. Mar.27,1812, Married Hannah Eunice Cobb on Mar.9,1841, and Ellen Sophie Howard b.? married Roswell Lyman Cobb b.Apr.8,1817 (Brother of Hannah Eunice) on Nov.27,1803. Between 1831-35 Asa,Mary Gage; Nathan,Betsey Howard; Roswell, Eunice Howard; Asa, Eliza Livermore, William, Mary Ann Cobb; and families, moved to Hanover, Chautauqua Co.,NY. Asa Gage, a Blacksmith, d.Jan. 26,1849, Hanover. His widow, Mary, lived with William Cobb, and she d.Jan.3,1859, Hanover. Buried in Glenwood Cemetery, Hanover,NY. Apparently Nathan Howard had a good relationship with his step children as both lived next or near him. Hope this helps. Cliff Cobb

Someone asked where the birthdates came from. The only dates I know of are in the IGI file in Vermont batch
#745 0224. I have no proof this is the family; I have no proof other than conjecture. One of the children in the IGI Batch 7450224 is named Polly Lamphire Sanders and that led me to believe that her mother might be "Martha Lamphere." Again , I have only conjecture so I apologize.

Jean Sanders
Massachusetts

I am interested in this post because of the mention of Collins, Erie Co., NY. The Irish-Cook-Shaw Cemetery is where some of my ancestors are buried. They came from Danby, Rutland Co., VT. Their surname is Rudd. They also have a daughter Harriet buried there, married to Joseph Kelley.

I looked in my index to the Danby, VT history and do not find any Sanders/Saunders surnames listed there. There is an Albertus, Jennie, Lucy and Seth Warner listed.

Hi Cousin Molly,

Unfortunately I don't know much about the Saunders. We have a page from a family bible listing a few generations of our ancestors in western New York.

My great-great grandfather Arthur White married Hannah Morrison Warner. Hannah was the daughter of Samuel Harmon Warner and Mary P. Saunders. Mary was born May 15, 1810 in Vermont, married Samuel in 1829, and died in Collins, Erie County, NY, May 4, 1864.

She was the daughter of Joseph Saunders, b. Dec. 1, 1783, d. Nov. 1862, and Martha [unknown]. Her birth date is listed as Apr. 16, 1791 and death as May 24, 1853 in Collins.

I know the Warner family came from Bernardston, Ma just across the border from Vermont and some members of the family ended up on both sides of that border.

I once found a Vt census record (1830 I think?) that might be Joseph but there isn't enough to know for sure.

The 1860 census has him listed as Sanders, in Collins, and born 1783 in New Hampshire. He is living with the Bates family whose mother is named Eliza and is the right age to perhaps be another daughter.

There is a listing for their grave sites here

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nyerie2/cemeteries/irishce...

that lists her name as Patty. I suppose that could a transcription error for Polly. I don't know our bible record only says Martha.

I also came across a little info on the Warner family in a book called "History of the Original Town of Concord, New York" in which it lists Samuel and says "He was married in 1829 to Mary Sanders, who was born in Vermont in 1810 and died in Collins in 1864."

It also lists one of their sons, William H. Warner, in which it says, "His maternal grandfather, Joseph Sanders, was a soldier of the War of 1812." William H. Warner was the father, by the way, of Glenn Scoby Warner, better known as Pop Warner.

All of which conforms to what we know from family records.

Unfortunately I have not been able to track him back any further nor have I ever found out her maiden name. Nor do I know anything about additional children beyond my Mary (and now your Martha!). I can provide plenty on the Warner and White family descent from Mary if you would like and would be very interested in learning more about the rest of the family if you know more.

Andrew

I'm looking for any info on a William Cobb b. Mar.29,1777. Abt. 1805, in Windham Co. (Prob. Jamaica) he married Betsey Gage b.Feb.24,1786,Hubbardston,Ma., the dau. of Asa and Mary Polly Bolton Gage. William and Betsey had 2 children; William Jr. b.Jul.27,1806,Windham Co.,d.Aug.30,1869, Fredonia, Chautauqua,NY, m. Mary Ann Botsford and Possible Dau. Eliza b.Jun26,1808, Windham d.aft 1879,Westerville,Ohio. Jan.5,1813, William Sr. died, Prob. Jamaica. Betsey Gage-Cobb then married Nathan Howard and had 2 more children; Jane b.1819, and Subbinus b.May 10,1824, Jamaica. In 1835,Nathan and Betsey Howard, along with William Jr. and Mary Ann Botsford Cobb, and Asa and Eliza Cobb Livermore moved to Hanover, Chautauqua Co.,NY. I have a hunch that William Cobb Sr. might be the son of Daniel Cobb and Hannah Hodges, but haven't come up with any proof other than Daniel did have a son named William, but there were other Cobbs in Windham Co. who might also had a son named William. Does anyone have anything On William's birth, death, burial and parents? Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. Cliff Cobb

I am trying to find out details about my ggggrandfather Lincoln Wetherill (various spelling) who sounds like a bit of a scoundrel...he was married to Betsey Skinner and then somehow ended up in Ontario, Canada and married my ggggrandmother Tacy Kinsey....they had three children two of whom lived to adulthood; then they both seemed to have vanished...I have recently found out that he may have returned to Windham Vermont and was buried with Betsey...around 1858....does anyone know anything more about him...it sounds like a harlequin romance really but I'm becoming more and more curious about the story.

I know that our Frederick Wilkins is the son of Isaac Wilkins and Elisabeth Bailey/Bayley due to family records. Plus Isaac is buried here in Iowa Co., Iowa. We have Frederick's civil war records but no date of birth is listed. Would like to narrow down his date and month of birth.
Thanks for the info on the book. Will look that up and see if I can get a copy of that.
Thanks for your help, Dawn Nelson
Cedar Rapids, IA

I am looking for the marriage record of Elisha Lake and Prudence Holmes. They were married 26 March 1826 "in Vermont". Elisha was from RI and Prudence from CT. I believe that Elisha was the son of Dean Lake that lived in Heath MA, Whitingham, VT and Stamford, VT. Elisha and Prudence are living in Stamford by 1830. There is no record of their marriage in Stamford.
