I AM INTERESTED IN FINDING OUT NAMES OF VERMONT IRISHMEN WHO ORIGINATED FROM THE TIPPERARY/KILKENNY BORDERS AND WENT TO WORK IN THE SLATE AND MARBLE QUARRIES IN VERMONT.

MY PARTICULAR INTEREST IS THE NAMES OF THOSE WHO CAME FROM THE CARRICK-ON-SUIR OR WINDGAP REGIONS AND MAY POSSIBLY HAVE PREVIOUSLY WORKED AT THE AHENNY SLATE QUARRIES IN TIPPERARY.

You might want to check out the area of Barre, Vermont and also Orleans county as many were border workers in Stanstead/Beebe Plain, Quebec.
One of the largest granite quarries in North America is located there.
Check out the Eastern Townships homepage. This area is noted for crossing borders for churches, births, deaths, and work.

Read your post on Windgap and vermont quarries. My father (Edward Millea B.1888) and uncle (James) were from Windgap. My uncle worked at Victoria Slate mines in Windgap. I visited there about 3 years ago; the quarries are all closed and fenced off. Uncle James had a letter of recommendation from his foreman at Windgap. Both brothers went on arrival in U.S. to their older sister (Minnie Biggs)in Grandville, N.Y. near the Barre quarries in Vermont. They never worked in the qyarries. Came to Chicago James worked for Post Office and died in 1943. My father Ed worked for Chicago Police DFept for 33 years

Granville, NY is not near Barre, VT. Are you thinking of Graniteville, VT which is a village in Barre? There is also a Granville, VT in Addison Co., VT which would be some distance from Barre

Thanks for the info. I haven't been to Granville, N.Y since I was about 4-5 years old in the 1930's But some of y father's family from Windgap had settled there and there were quarries nearby-perhaps for slate like the closed Victoria quarries near Windgap. Windgap, Ireland is an interesting place, near the Celtic crosses at Ahenny

Thomas,
I know there were Millea in Bridge Street, Carrick-on-Suir - are you a member of this family? Also Millea in Widnes, Cheshire, who I believe may also be of this family? Would be interested to know?
