The Worcester Registry of Deeds bears ample evidence that many farms in "the north part" of the town, where the Scotch-Irish were specially located, and where the "Old Fort" stood in which they sometimes worshipped, changed hands in 1737 and in the years immediately following. John Gray, for example, and each of three sons of his, made significant conveyances of land in Worcester in that interval; and it is quite noticeable that the name of John Clark, the first to sign the petition to the town of Worcester for exemption from church taxes in behalf of himself and fellow signers, stands prominent a couple of years later among the first settlers of the Scotch-Irish town of Colerain, fifty miles to the northwest of Worcester, so named from the old Ulster town on the Bann. The Morrisons, Pennells, Herrouns, Hendersons, Cochranes, Hunters, Henrys, Clarks, McClellans, McCowens, Taggarts, and McDowells, many of whom had been previous settlers in Worcester, were the chief families in this frontier and Presbyterian town, now on the border of Vermont.

Trying to trace what happened to George Bruce b. 21 Jan 1868 Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Mo. Mary Ann Bruce aka Lawrie. On 2 Dec. 1890 he married Mary Wright. In 1901 Census in Aberdeen he was described as - 33, railway carter. George Bruce arrived in US in 1905. He signed up with Canadian Army in WW1 and at one point was billeted back in Aberdeen, very close to his family home - a photograph records George and Mary at this point. He was described as alive and a stone polisher in his son Alexander’s marriage certificate in 1922. (In the 1930 USA Federal Census there is a George Bruce, 44, bo. Abt 1886 Scotland as a Lodger at Barre, Washington, Vermont - but no knowledge if this is same person. The age is wrong.) The family who remained in Scotland have no knowledge of what happened to him.
Sacramental Records of Father Daly, Early Missionary

One of my ancestors was born near Keene, NH ca. 1848. His birth predates establishment of Catholic parishes in that region. There was a missionary priest, Father Daly (John B. Daly, I believe), who served parts of Vermont and, eventually, Southwest NH during that time-frame. Does anybody know if Fr. Daly's sacramental records exist and, if so, where they might be found?

Thanks.
Bob

Great news---according to the probate record for Roswell Place, died at St. George, VT, 1872, Senara/Cinara Burt was listed in his will as his sister, which would make her daughter of Robert Place and Lucy Lincoln.

There is some other family information that I think would be very interesting to you in Roswell's will.

These probate records are free on the LDS (pilot) site:

http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=home

You have to click on Browse collections, then click on the correct place on the map, then scroll down the page until you get to the listings of databases and look for Vermont Probate files, then search for the person you are looking for.

Good luck, and hope this was helpful to you.

Scottish Glovers

I've been tracing my Glovers in Northern Virginia in the 18th century and having modest success although there were lots of Glovers there, but none proven to be mine. DNA indicates that they were of Scottish descent, probably via Northern Ireland. I'm wondering if the Vermont Glovers were related to the Virginia ones, and if they came somehow from Scotland to New England and for some reason mine came from there to Virginia. Any thoughts.

I haven't been to Granville, N.Y since I was about 4-5 years old in the 1930's But some of y father's family from Windgap had settled there and there were quarries nearby-perhaps for slate like the closed Victoria quarries near Windgap. Windgap, Ireland is an interesting place, near the Celtic crosses at Ahenny

Read your post on Windgap and vermont quarries. My father (Edward Millea B.1888) and uncle (James) were from Windgap. My uncle worked at Victoria Slate mines in Windgap. I visited there about 3 years ago; the quarries are all closed and fenced off. Uncle James had a letter of recommendation from his foreman at Windgap. Both brothers went on arrival in U.S. to their older sister (Minnie Biggs)in Grandville, N.Y. near the Barre quarries in Vermont. They never worked in the qyarries. Came to Chicago James worked for Post Office and died in 1943. My father Ed worked for Chicago Police DFept for 33 years

I checked the Paquin database [the link is below]. There was no info on Jean Paquin, not even his first name. Mary's parents were Soteros Maniatty and Lucille Gonyer. The Social Security records would have more info.

http://www.ssa.gov/online/ssa-711.pdf

Jean PAQUIN
Birth Date: 2 Apr 1927
Death Date: Mar 1982
Social Security Number: 037-18-1146
State or Territory Where Number Was Issued: Rhode Island

Death Residence Localities
ZIP Code: 02839
Localities: Mapleville, Providence, Rhode Island

Death Benefit Localities
Zip Code: 02838
Localities: Lincoln, Providence, Rhode Island
Manville, Providence, Rhode Island

Soteros MANIATTY
Birth Date: 6 Oct 1922
Death Date: Jul 1974
Social Security Number: 008-12-1606
State or Territory Where Number Was Issued: Vermont

FROM: http://69.61.37.254/~afpaquin/dic/login_register.php?action=...
Mary-J.
I know of no way to search VT records after 1930 except to suggest you go to the local town where the item occurred. usually birth and death etc. records kept at the local level records would be kept. There are people on the VT list who can assist in this.

Is this your family?

Mrs. Mildred S. (Pappas) Soteros

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Mrs. Mildred S. (Pappas) Soteros, 83, of 928 South St., who died Jan. 3, 2004, were held from J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, on Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, with services at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church.

Father Angelo Pappas, presbyter, officiated. Usher was Andy Bosen. In attendance were members of the church.

Burial was in Sagamore Cemetery, Portsmouth, with committal services by Father Pappas.

Bearers were Nick Soteros and George Soteros.
The best way to start is to locate her in 1930 census if that old. Here is a Maniatte family in Barre in 1930 census.
often the spelling of these names get really messed up. Is this your family?

George Maniatte Christina Barre, Washington, Vermont abt 1875 Greece Head

Christina Maniatte George Barre, Washington, Vermont abt 1886 Greece Wife

Sperios Maniatte George,
Christina Barre, Washington, Vermont abt 1908 Greece Son
Catherine Maniatte George,
Christina Barre, Washington, Vermont abt 1913 Greece Daughter
Mary Maniatte George,
Christina Barre, Washington, Vermont abt 1915 Greece Daughter
Marinos Maniatte George,
Christina Barre, Washington, Vermont abt 1918 Greece Son
Constantine Maniatte George,
Christina Barre, Washington, Vermont abt 1919 Greece Son
John Maniatte George,
Christina Barre, Washington, Vermont abt 1921 Greece Son
Soterios Maniatte George,
Christina Barre, Washington, Vermont abt 1923 Greece Son

Her death record indicates that she was born in Hinesburg, VT but birth records of two of her children indicate that she was from St. George. She maried Buel Burt.

I believe that she was born about 1816 based on census records.

I would sppreciate sharing any information that you may have on Sanara.

Thanks,
Norm Burt

That was an old family tale that is not correct. It looks like old John P did it. I also don't believe he was a half brother but brother to my grandfather Henry William as I can only find evidence of Edward Phair having one wife Mary (Preston).

I do not show ELLEN GROUT ROSEBERY buried at the East Main Street Cemetery but do show her brother, THEOPHILUS GROUT "THEODORE" ROSEBERRY buried there. This information was given to me by a descendant of ADDIE (GROUT) ROSEBERY. I noticed an earlier post on this board that said I was a SOMERVILLE descendant - and that is not true. JUDITH ADELINE (SLEEPER) SMITH was married to REV. WILLIAM CRAWFORD SOMERVILLE. JUDITH was my 2-great grandaunt. Both are buried in the GROUT family plot. JUDITH & WILLIAM unofficially adopted ELLEN (BLACK) GROUT after her parents deaths in Galveston, TX, and they brought her back to Vermont with them where she met her future husband.
======================================================
Jacqueline Sleeper Russell
(always wished I had a JACK RUSSELL Terrier)
Web site: http://tinyurl.com/q7w9ec

Jim,

I found this in some old notes. Maybe this Jacki Russell can help. I can't post her e-mail so you may want to leave her a post also. I won't bombard you with any more, I promise. LOL

Betty

3. ADDIE LOU3 GROUT (THEOPHILUS2, JOSIAH1) was born Abt. 1880 in Vermont. She married WILLIAM G. ROSEBERRY.
No, I'm sorry to say that the reunion you've cited would be of no real interest to me. I say that because I'm related to William Guy Rosebery rather than his wife, Addielou Grout Rosebery. So, they and their descendants are the only ones of genealogical interest to me. They were married in 1900, unfortunately a date following that of the reunion you've mentioned. It was nice of you to offer, though.

Jim

Hi Jim;
I don't think we are of the same line of GROUT in Kirby/St Johnsberry, VT. Maybe some more recent Grout decendants are but I haven't traced them. There are a lot of the original VT GROUT's burried in Grove Cem. St Johnsberry(m/s), VT.

You may have meant your post for Jan Rosenberger, who had posted me about some gravestone pictures. She was more into the other names. That was way back in Aug 2003 and I have lost her addy, Sorry! Leave another post here for her.

I wonder if you have a record for the dates of birth and death as well as the burial of Addie's daughter, Ellen A. Rosebery; Addie's first husband, William Guy Rosebery; and/or her son, Theophilius (aka Theodore or Grout) Rosebery. I can't find anything about them other than their likely years and places of birth. William Guy Rosebery was born as William Guy Roseberry—the correct family surname spelling—7/17/1874 in IL. Ellen A. Rosebery was born in 1906 at MA, and the variously named son was born 9/1/1909 in MA. So, can you give me any other data about them?

Jim

Sue,

I think you may have found the folks for whom I have been searching. My g, g, g grandfather, Charles Rouse Oles, b 1833 in Brantford, Ont had a father b in VT. I believe his father was brought to Ont by the grandfather at a young age and that this family was a group of loyalists. I also think they were associated possibly with Brant's volunteers - but I am not sure.

There is a Gilbert Oles in the Michigan census of 1850 and 1860 who I think might be my Charles' father. I also think that Gilbert might be the brother of John Oles - famous in Brantford history. John and Gilbert were sons of Gilbert Oles - who would then be Charles' grandfather.

Does this make sense from what you know?

Looking for the Forguites and Beausault family ancestry.
George Joseph Forguites (b. 1839) was married to Lena Beausault and both were from Darmstadt, Germany. They had three children. Their daughter (my g-greatgrandma) Eva was born in NYC. She married Jacob Nicholas (or Nicholas Jacob) Pfenning in 1872. Eva and Jacob Pfenning had both died in Vermont. Any help on the Forguites/Beausault families in Darmstadt would be greatly appreciated. THX!
