Hi everyone,
I was wondering if someone was able to help me with more information on my ggGrandmother Ellen Finn.
I have printed out her Conduct Report, Indent Record, and description List.

This is what I know so far ...

Trial took place on 1 Apr 1848 at Co. Waterford, Ireland, for stealing Calico and was sentaenced to 7 years transportation to VDL. Port of departure was Dublin 11 Oct 1848 on Lord Auckland(3). I know about the ship. I know how many female convicts were on board and how long it took and there was 1 death. I also know the Masters name and the surgeons name. I also know Ellen was classed as 3rd class and went to the Female Factory but which one I do not know. I know she applied to marry my ggGrandfather Robert Ord who was a free man and they married 7 Mar 1851. I have copy of their marriage register but I do not have a copy of her application to marry but would love to have it.

I would love to know more about her if anyone could help me please :) I would also like to know how they have met, after all she had not been in VDL all that long. I have so many questions LOL.
Oh yes it said on one of the records that she was once married but that is all and on the copy of the marriage register it said she was a widow, so I am stuck for a birth name for her and a year of birth.

I just hope I have given enough information for you all to go by but if anyone knows anything about my Ellen Finn, I would love to hear from you.

Carol :)

She applied to marry 1/10/1850 if you look on the TAS archives you will find the ref number. At her marriage her age was listed as 33 so her birth would of been about 1818.
Robert was 37 birth about 1814.
I can find a death for Ellen Ord 1878 but her age is 65 makes her born 1813 and a death for Robert 1882 age 72 makes him born 1810

thank you so much for your reply :)
I have the death of Ellen and the children etc.
I will be getting the apply to marry record when I can but now I would like to know how the two of them met and what happened to her once she disenbarked from the Lord Auckland(3). Plus I would like to find her trial records in Ireland and her maiden name, as it says on her marriage thingie hehehe she was a widow.

On her indent record under Remarks, ir says, Hus which I think means Husband is John at? N.P. What is N.P?

Bro which I think mean Brother, is Dennis and I can not make out the other name and there is a squiggle of some type and the name Mary as well. I think Mary is the person that wrote the info down I think. It also says her Native Place is Co Cork but that is a huge place so she could have from from any where there lol.

Under Statement of Offence, it states her crime which I knew but it also says 6 months for something. I can not work it out.
So if anyone can help me work things out and find more on Ellen, I sure wonder be ever so greatful.

Carol

Hi Carol, First of all there are a few online guides to abbreviations used in convict records. Check out http://www.archives.tas.gov.au/guides/list/bg020 and http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~austashs/convicts/conabbre... N.P. stands for Native Place which is generally their birthplace. In Ellen's case it just says County Cork which is not much help. It then says brothers Dennis and Jeremiah, the "squiggle" is an S for sister - Mary. As it doesn't name parents the brothers and sister may be your only clue to finding a correct baptism once you find her maiden name. Be aware that they didn't always name all their siblings, especially if it was a big family. The 6 months was "for a Turkey" which she probably stole. It is easier to read on the conduct record. She was obviously very well behaved. If you contact the Tas Archives through their website (Research Services) they will check for any other records relating to Ellen, and will give you a quote on costs. It would be worth pursuing every bit of info you can find. Good luck.

Debra,

Thank you ever so much for your help.
I just wish my father was still alive so I can share this news with him. I have been researching Ellen for years. I'm glad I waited to be able view her records online but I will send away for them as well. Dad didn't know very much about his family as his mother and father didn't speak of them that much. I am still researching my father's mother with what info my own mother gave me about her. I followed that up and was happy to find a little more on her too.
You know it is such a shame how some of our ancestors never spoke about their pass. I am trying to piece together my own fathers life because I am writing his life story so my own children and learn about their poppy. I tell ya in doing this I am learning a lot about my own siblings and mother as well and boooooooooy, what I am hearing isn't nice and I can now understand why my siblings have protested me all my life.
Anyway, thank you again Debra
Hugs Carol :)
