Thank you for your very generous offer.

My grandfather told me one of his forefathers was a convict sentenced to 7 years and transportation to Australia. He also said that his name was Thomas Jones because the oldest boy of each generation has been Thomas forever in his family. I've managed to trace 2 generations from granddad to Thomas Jones (B. about 1832 in Cardigan Shire, Wales) who married Catherine Hammill (B. 1835-7 Co. Clare, Ireland). Tom was a miner and part owner of a quarry in Jane Street Fortitude Valley with Stephen Hammill. I haven't yet confirmed his mother's name, nor can I find when he arrived in Australia.

What I'd really like to know is, was he the convict or was it his father (and when did he come to Australia).

Thank you again for your kind offer. I hope you can find something for me.

Surnames: Hailey, Cains
Hello,
You are bound to be very busy from such a generous offer, but if you are able could you please check on two of my relatives that were transported. I've managed to find the following:
Joshua Hailey born 1792 in Hitchin transported for life in 1832 on Mary III to NSW.
Edward Cains born 1810 in Hitchin, Hertfordshire, transported for 7 years in 1845 to VDL Tasmania.
I wondered if either remarried while they were there.
Any information would be appreciated.
Kind Regards
Susan

Hi
I have found a John Hailey who married a Martha Fox in NSW in 1856 in Concord,i have also found a John Hailey died 1902 in Goulburn,i have been unable to find a Joshua Hailey in all states of Australia with the BDM's.
I did find a Joshua Hailey was convicted of Larceny in Hertfordshire in 1820 and was put in jail for 7 days.
And also again in 1825 in Hertfordshire for "Offence against the Game Laws" and was put in jail for 1 year.
I hope this might help.
I will look for Edward Cains for you.

Take care
Vicki

Sorry, I've not yet found a date of death, but he was born 1832ish in Cardiganshire, Wales (he was 31 when his son was born in 1863) and was married in 1861 in Brisbane. So he arrived in Australia somewhere in between. Sorry, I've hit a brick wall with him. Oh and he was a Roman Catholic.
