My ancestor John Chapman arrived in 1837 aboard the James Pattison. He was assigned to Isabella Mary KELLY in the Manning Valley when in January 1843 he was imprisoned for murder awaiting instruction from the Attorney General which never arrived. By the end of April 1843 John was freed without trial by the local magistrate. It is said he was never returned to his assigned master Miss Kelly. He obtained his Cert of Freedom dated November 1843.
Is it possible to find out where the COF was granted? There is nothing in this regard written on the COF, while I have seen notes on other COF ie Maitland Bench.
