Need help finding info on Abrahams

Surnames: Abraham/Ward.
I'm researching my sister-in-laws fathers family. Her grandparents were Elio and Mary? Abraham. On a 1930 US census from New Kensington PA their names were Elio and Mary Ward. My sister-in-law says she remembers her father (Frank Ward) telling a story of how Elio changed the family name to Ward during the depression because there were too many Abrahams in the New Kensington area that were not related to him. The census listed an immigration date of 1897 from Syria. She never met her grandparents due to their deaths. Her parents have also passed and she has no information for her tree.
