I too have a ggg-grandmother called Rachel Masters b1785 in Wiltshire, who married a William Henry Amos in Canterbury. They lived in Dover, where my g-grandmother (Sarah Jane Amos) subsequently married my g-grandfather who was a paymaster in the Army, stationed at Western Heights.

I have no details of Rachel's parentage, but I do have a picture that is supposedly of her.

Hi Jean
Just found your thread
I have a Mary Ann AMOS chr 21 Apr 1850 Chilham (CCA 507) who was the daugther of Robert Amos and Margaret nee Filmer. However he wasn't born in Chilham in 1811 he was born 14 Mar 1807 Hastingleigh and christened there on 26 Apr 1807 Hastenleigh (CCA).
Does this fit with your details if yes, I can give you pointers as to trace his ancestors and that of Margaret Filmer. I am descended from their son George chr 1840 in Chilham.
As a matter of curiosity who did your Mary Ann marry? As it has puzzled me whether she married Henry Thomas or William Iddenden aka Hoidenten.
Regards
Sandra

Hi Gill:
Thank you indeed for writing. I just recently reconnected with Brian Austin - he had a computer failure and lost his e-mail addresses. I met Brian for the first time ever last June, when I came back to the UK for a visit and reunion of old friends. Brian is a great guy and is very keen on the family history, as I am I! I can't recall what I wrote about my Amos connection, but it seems that you have a good idea of the relationships. I would love to get any pics you have and any family information you would like to send. You can e-mail me directly at phfloyd@uwo.ca

I was also born in 1947 (May 28th) Would like some information about my family? I emigrated to Canada in 1974 with my first wife (fiancee) Glenda. Later we divorced an I married Kathy (nee Keene) whose family have lived in London, Ontario since the later 1800's. They were of mainly British stock. Somewhere in the family tree, and relative of Kathy's married Charles Dickens! I can dig out that tree and copy it to you as well if you like.

Please do write and tell me all about yourself and your family, where you live etc.

Cheers,
Phil (Philip Hugh) Floyd
Hi Phil,
Just found your message - I am also related to that family,
in fact we must be 2nd cousins. My mother was your grandad
Harry's youngest sister (Kathleen) born in 1906. If you have the family tree you will find her. I only saw my uncle Harry once. I was the youngest of Kathleens children born in 1947, so as you can imagine most of my 1st cousins were a lot older than me. I went to school with Muriel who is your auntie Vera's daughter, so again my 2nd cousing.
Your uncle Jack & his wife Brenda used to visit my mum quite regularly, but I did not know the others very well.
I am in touch with Brian Austin and I do know quite a lot about the family, so would love to hear from you. I also have a lot of photos you may be interested in.
Best Wishes,
Gill Pout (nee Holliday)

This is what I know about James:

* Born 1813
* Referred to in family notices as a "Native of Norfolk England.
* Moved to Tasmania, Australia before 1862.
* May have arrived and lived in mainland Australian before moving to Hobart, Tasmania.
* Married Sarah Ann Hewitt circa 1862.
* Died 8 Feb 1898 in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia
* Had 5 sons: James William, Joseph, Sydney John, Charles Benjamin, Bingham Percival (my great grandfather) and a daughter: Sarah Louisa who died at 20.

I have his death certificate on order, but I doubt it will list his parents. If anyone happens to have any information I would be grateful.

Hi Jean

I know that the Robert Amos who married Margaret Filmer in Faversham in 1831 was christened 1807 Hastingleigh. All through the census reports he is an agricultural labourer. They do have a daugther Mary Ann christened 1850 in Chilham. She is the one reputed to have married William Iddenden in 1870 in Boughton (under Blean). Haven't seen a marriage certificate so haven't proved this.

Haven't found a Robert Amos in Faversham for c1806/1807.

Mary Ann who married Henry Thomas also the daughter of a Robert Amos her marriage details in the parish records were as follows:
Mary Ann AMOS daughter of Robert Amos farmer minor spinster 18 of Northgate [that's Canterbury]
+ Henry THOMAS c1836 Henbury, Gloucestershire bachelor 32 Sgt 2nd Dragoon Guards at Barracks m 1 June 1868 St Mary’s Northgate, Canterbury (CCA 415) son of William Thomas carpenter wit: George Anthony Wynne, E Simmons

This shows her father as a farmer and they were living in Northgate in Canterbury. This is why I think her father is Robert Amos from Crundale c1806 St Marys Crundale. In the census reports, he starts off as farm lab and ends up as farmer:
1851 Cake Street, Waltham: Robert Amos 45 farm lab, Sarah 42 [HO107 piece 1623 folio 55 p27 gSU 193524]
1861 Hinxhill: Robert Amos 55 farmer of 8 acres, Sarah 52, Sarah Amos 80 mother in law formerly Publican’s wife b Throwley [RG9 piece 515 folio 44 p10 GSU 542653]
1871 Little Plumpton, Hinxhill: Robert Amos 65 farmer of 12 acres, Sarah 61 [RG10 piece 961 folio 65 p10 GSU 82724]

BUT nothing has been really proven either way as yet. Except I still haven't found a Mary Ann c1849 christened in Chilham.

Regards
Sandra
Dear Sandra - thanks so much for your info. You really are an "Amos" specialist!
I am stuck - and maybe you can help. I know that my Mary ann Amos married Henry Thomas. I get confused when searching her father. I thought it was Robert Amos born in 1907 in Faversham and married to Margaret Filmer. I relaise that they had a daughter also Mary Ann who looks as if she married Iddenden, but on the marriage certificate it does not mention a Robert as her father, so my only track of Mary ann- daughter of Robert is the one married to Henry Thomas.
Could this Robert born in Faversham be my Mary Ann's father?
help!!
Jean

Hi Roger
Have almost the same details there as you but have not verified it as Edward is not in my direct line. Please DOUBLE check the following information all the way through as I have not verified it - the family seems to bounce about in Kent so it could be someone else's wishful thinking!

Edward Amos was born c1818 in Westcliffe Kent and died Mar 1866 Faversham.
He had a brother William born c1816 St Margaret's at Cliffe, Kent who married an Ann Amos chr 1819 d/o Thomas Amos & Elizabeth nee Howland.

Edward and William's father was also an Edward c1786 Thanet who married a Frances ? born c1793/95.
His father was a Thomas Amos chr 1765 Dover who married Mary ? marriage date not known
Thomas's father was John Amos c1736 Minster, Thanet who married Elizabeth Ratcliffe in 1762 Dover.
John's father was Thomas Amos c1698 Waltham who married Elizabeth Bristow in 1727 Thanet
Thomas's father another Thomas was born c1665 Canterbury who married Elizabeth Goodwin in 1690 Canterbury
Thomas's father was also another Thomas c1619 Mersham but no idea who his mother was.
Possibility that this Thomas's father was Abraham Amies who married Adree Axkine m 1599 Ashford but all their previous children were born in Ashford so it might not be correct.
Hope this helps somewhat.
Regards
Sandra

Hi Jean
Not sure but I have a Mary Ann Amos c1849 Chilham the daughter of Robert Amos (farmer). She maried a Henry Thomas (a soldier) in Canterbury and went to live in Wiltshire. However, as far as I can make out her father, Robert, was born c1806 in Crundale as per 1841 census. This Robert was the son of another Robert Amos 1775 Crundale and Mary nee Browning who married 1802 Crundale. Robert 1775 was the son of John Amos and Sarah nee Dad.

As far as I am aware Sarah was the first wife of John Amos chr 1750 Molash the son of John Amos and Susannah nee Mace. His second wife was Mary Hollingsbury.

The only other Robert Amos about this time was christened in 1807 Hastingleigh and was the son of David Amos and Elizabeth Hawkings. He in turn was the son of John Amos and Mary nee Hollingsbury mentioned above.

Robert 1807 (ag lab) married Margaret Filmer in 1831 Faversham. They too had a daughter Mary Ann christened 1850 Chilham but she married William Iddenden in 1870.

Hope this helps a little. But no matter what, always double check any information you find against the census reports where possible.

Regards
Sandra

Hi Valerie,

I don't have much information for Rachel. It's been pretty difficult to trace her back and I'm not alone in that regard. I'll send you an email.

Mark Amos son of Thomas Amos, farmer. Married 1852

I have an ancestor, Rose Louisa Robinson, baptized Canterbury 1825, daughter of Thomas Ridout, Surgeon and Jane Wanstall of Herne, and grand daughter of Thomas Ridout and JANE LANSEL of Canterbury. In 1852, she married MARK AMOS, son of THOMAS AMOS, farmer, at St. John's Church, Waterloo Road, South London. Although I have traced the Ridouts I have had no luck with the Amos family either prior to or following the 1852 marriage

Albert Amos

Looking for an Albert Amos, who married Olive Maud Hayes in 1908. Married in Shardlow, Derbyshire. Cannot find any previous records for him other than marriage. Rumour that he may have lived in London and 1901 census record lists an Albert Amos living in Ilkeston as a lodger, born in Kentish Town... but not enough supporting evidence to take this as a definite...

Would really appreciate any replies or info that can shed any light on tracing this family member. Thanks

Hi Mamos130

Thank you for your message about Franklin and for offering to ask your dad about him :-)

We managed to find out that Franklin was actually born in Faversham, Kent but it would be great to know what took him to Norwich and about his life there (his son Montague was born in Holt).

Thanks again for your reply and would be great to hear from you if you could help :-) We've not done much research lately so it would be good to get back into it all again.

Tanya
