Hello.

I am posting under a ancestry.com username that belongs to a friend.

I have traced my g-g grandfather Herman Atlas, father of Harold, father of Jeff, father of me, back to Lemberg (Lviv,Lwow area, Glacia / Poland / Austra / Ukraine).

Perhaps we have some common lineage?

The name Atlas is used in at least three eithnic groups. Jewish, Greek and Iranian. I only know a little of the possible origins of the Jewish use of the name.

There are two competing sources for the name Atlas in Jewish geneology:
1. It is a Hebrew anacronym: "Ach Tov L'Israel Selah", which, loosely translated, means 'like a brother to Israel'.
2. Atlas is similar to "Atwaf", which I believe is an old German word for silk. As such, the name could come from silk traders.

I have also heard that certain Jewish families in ancient Greece were given Greek names. That could be anohter possible origin.

I know two origins of the name Atlas.
One is a Hebrew anachronym: Ach Tov L'Israel Selah
The other is an old German word for silk.
Some say the name was granted to certain prominent Jews in the Greek court.

Yes, I am Jewish. Obviously I can't speak for all Atlases.

My grandfather Joseph Solomon Atlas was from Wielkie Oczy (near Lvov/Lemberg) on the Poland/Ukraine border.

African Americans With The Last Name Atlas

Hi. My maternal family his this last name, and we are unaware of how it was obtained. It is believed to have been the given last name of my great great great grandfather, as he did not keep the last name of his slave holders.

We have been unable to identify if this was the first slave holders last name or if it was a name given to whomever came to the US. This side of the family is said to have been created in GA, but that is all the information we have. The last names Attas or Ates may be a derivative.

I have a couple of questions for you....Do you know anyone in your family that gave a baby up for adoption in 1964. My bmom was 20 and Bdad was 21 they were married. Bdad was incarcerated for Traffic Violations and Assault. I have an older brother (do not know how much older....maybe 2yrs.) Bmom did not get to name me so she may not know what sex of baby was. I am not sure that Atlas was my birth name....it was my code name. I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask.

If the person with the name is from Eastern Europe, then the chances are that it is a Jewish name, which is a Hebrew anachronym.

My fathers name was slater and we were raised in
CASTLEFORD west yorkshire. I would like to know where the slater name came from, what nationality it is and if there is anyone out there that has the same surname from the same area.

There are many, many with the Atlas name who settled in Ohio. The ones that I have been following were Jewish, having come from Hungary (I think) and marrying into various families with surnames Raduziner, Englander, Pastor, Duga (my family), Freilich, Seidenfeld, and interconnected with many others. There are quite a few who are connected with teh extended Jewish families of Zanesville, OH, and small towns in Perry County, OH.

My grandmother's brother Adolph Krause married an Esther Atlasz in the first decade of the 20th Century. She was a Jewish/Hungarian emigrant, living in Passaic (?) New Jersey.

hi. i'm from manila, philippines. i just want to try to trace my ancestry. how come almost all with the surname atlas are from other countries? We are only few here in the Philippines, i mean those with surname like ours. im just wondering how i got this surname coz its different. almost all surnames here are of spanish or chinese origin. anyways, just glad to know that there's a lot of atlas in the world.

Dear Christine,

To the best of my belief, I think the Atlas name is Jewish. There was an older gentleman in our home town that was Jewish and he tried to get my grandfather to go to Synagogue with him. He never would go.

My great-grandfather's name was Jacob Atlas, and I believe he was from Lithuania. When this Atlas family came to the USA, they settled in Erie, PA and in Buffalo, NY.

My grandfather's name was Harry Herschel Atlas. He came from Russia with his parents and grandmother. I don't know much about his siblings. maybe a brother and sister. he was lost from his parents at ellis island and spent most of his early years 4-6 in an orphanage. he came to texas on one of the orphan trains. i am searching for anyone who might be kin.
