Rhoda Melvine Barrington
&
James Columbus Gardner

Rhoda Melvine Barrington was born February 26, 1873 in Blackrock Community, Crenshaw County, Alabama, and died October 12, 1912 in Rutledge, Crenshaw County, Alabama. She married James Columbus Gardner Abt. 1888 in Rutledge, Crenshaw County, Alabama. He was born March 12, 1860 in Alabama, and died May 16, 1941 in Honoraville, Crenshaw County, Alabama.

Rhoda Melvine Barrington was the tenth and last child born to the family of William Winfirld Barrington and Rhoda Adeline Weaver. Out of the nine siblings of Rhoda four died soon after their births, and even though she was the last born, out of the remaining siblings she was the first to pass way. Rhoda was born on the family farm about three miles north of the Black Rock Church in west central Crenshaw County, Alabama on February 26, 1873. Rhoda’s father William Winfield Barrington, was the first Barrington to move to this part of Alabama, having moved to the area when it was part of Butler County. The second Barrington family to come to Crenshaw County was William’s brother, Marion Madison Barrington, who moved from Barbour County about 1870.

Rhoda Melvine Barrington married when she was about 15 years of age in the year of 1888. She married James Columbus Gardner who was born in Alabama on March 12, 1860. Rhoda gave birth to her first child Arthur when she was but 16 years of age and by the time of her early death in 1912 she would give birth to eleven more children for a total of twelve. From the time of her marriage and at least through the year of 1910, Rhoda, her husband and family continued to live on the land owned by her father. The Gardner family can be found there in both the 1900 and 1910 Federal Census. In the 1900 census Rhoda is also living next to her sister Johanna Barrington-Leverett and family. By 1910 Johanna and her family had moved to the Community of Dock in Butler County, Rhoda’s mother died in 1902 and her father in 1909. Also by this time Rhoda had given birth to eleven of her twelve children.

On May 06, 1912 Rhoda gave birth to her last child, Topie Everrit Gardner. She died when Topie was only five months of age on October 12, 1912. After her death James Columbus Gardner and the eight remaining children moved to nearby Honoraville where they are listed in the 1920 Federal Census living next to the family of William Augustus Barrington. William was a son of Marion Madison Barrington, a brother of Rhoda’s father William Winfield. At the time of the 1920 census James was still listed as not married but by the time of the 1930 Federal Census he had married Emma Foster, Foster being the name of her previous marriage and not her maiden name. James Gardner was still living on the land next to the family of William Augustus Barrington at the time. However, William Augustus had moved to Marlow, Stephens County Oklahoma at the time but had left his land to his son Ralph Barrington who remained. On the 1930 census the only child of James and Rhoda still living at home was their last child Topie. James and Emma did have one child between them, a daughter Leola who was born about 1922. Also there were two children born to Emma’s previous marriage, Elanor and Martin Foster.

James Columbus Gardner died in Honoraville on May 16, 1941, Rhoda died many years earlier in Rutledge on October 12, 1912. After the death of James he was buried next to Rhoda at the Black Rock Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery near Rutledge. Also buried here are their children Arthur, Willie James, Leondrustheophilus and Elee.
