This is the latst information I have on Thomas Whitfield Barrington.

COMMENTS WELCOME

Thomas Whitfield Barrington, son of Marshall Matthews Barrington and Lavisy Lunsford was born in Claiborne Parish, Louisana on March 30, 1849. Thomas married three times and from what I have found, fathered possibly as many as 21 children of which I have listed 16. Thomas first married Permelia Ann Markham. Permelia was a daughter of John Bunyon Markham and his wife Sarah Elizabeth Upshaw, born in Noxubee County, Mississippi in 1844. Permelia’s parents were married September 03, 1843 in Noxubee County, Mississippi and later moved in Bienville Parish, Louisiana. John Markham died about 1856 in Minden, Webster Parish, Louisiana and in 1867 Sarah and her children including Permelia Ann and her siblings Emily, Tabitha, James Monroe, and John Bunyon, moved to Holland in Bell County, Texas. Permelia had previously married James “Jim” Adams on November 03, 1861 in Bienville Parish, Louisiana and had one child Jamie Ann Virginia Adams who was born in Bienville Parish about 1862. After Jim died Permelia married Thomas Whitfield Barrington, possibly in Claiborne Parish, Louisiana. After Permelia’s family moved to Bell County, Texas she and Thomas settled in nearby Williamson County were they had several children in addition to Permelia’s daughter Jamie. These children were John, Henry, Allen, Ben, Robert E., born about 1878, Robert Lee, born in 1881 and one daughter Mamie. Permelia died after 1881 in Holland, Bell County, Texas and was buried in Coleman County.

1870 Federal Census, Williamson County, Texas
Township of Georgetown

After researching the Williamson County, Texas census records I find Thomas and Permelia in the 1870 census, listed on page 35 of the 168 pages for Georgetown. In this census, Thomas is listed as 21 years of age, being born in 1849 in Louisiana and is a farm laborer. Permelia is listed as age 25, born in Mississippi. Also listed in the census are two children. James Barrington, age 7, born in Louisiana and John, age 1, born in Texas. Living next door listed is Henry Barrington age 17 and Martha Barrington age 29, born in Georgia and both children of Marshall Matthews Barrington and siblings of Thomas. They are listed living in the home of Dan Huggins, age 78 years and his wife Lavise, age 51, born in North Carolina. Marshall Matthews Barrington married Lavise Lunsford who was born in North Carolina and died in Williamson County, Texas. After Marshall's death Lavice married Daniel Huggins in Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana on September 26, 1864. After her marriage it appears she moved to Texas about the same time as Thomas.

On July 05, 1887 Thomas Whitfield Barrington married Amanda Jane Pate in Georgetown, Williamson County, Texas. Not much is known about his marriage to Amanda but it is believed they were married about five to six years and may have had as many as four children. Thomas and Amanda’s first child was William H. Barrington, born after 1887 in Georgetown, Williamson County, Texas. I have not been able to find the names of the other possible three children. In the 1880 Federal Census for Grayson, Texas what is believed to be Amanda Jane Pate is living with her Uncle, her age is listed as 22 and was born in Georgia. Amanda probably died before the third marriage of Thomas before 1890.

This third and last marriage was to Jane Jency Ida Smith, a daughter of a John Wesley “Bill” Smith and Caroline Wooten, originally from Georgia, born May 02, 1867. Thomas and Jane married prior to 1890, possibly in Williamson County, then moved to Llano County, Texas where they had at least nine children. Thomas died in 1906 and was buried on the family ranch in Llano County. After his death, Jane remarried to a Shockley after 1910 and moved to Big Springs, Howard County, Texas where she died on February 18, 1958 at the age of 90.

1900 Federal Census, Dallas County, Texas
Precinct # 8
Texas, Dallas County, Roll 1626 Book 2, Page 273

Thomas Whitfield Barrington, his wife Jane Jensie Ida "Dee" Smith and family, are listed in the 1900 Federal Census for Dallas County, Texas. Thomas is listed as being born in Louisiana in March 1849, age 51, occupation "blacksmith". Ida is listed as born in Georgia 1864 and is 35 years of age. They are reported as home owners and not farm owners. The children listed at home are William H., born April 1887, age 13 (Son of Thomas Whitfield and his second marriage to Amanda Pate); Joseph H., born July 1891, age 8; Peyton A., born January 1893, age 7; Marshall M., born January 1896, age 4 and Edward, born January 1899, age less than 1.

1910 Federal Census, Llano County, Texas
Precinct # 1 Township of Llano

In the 1910 Federal Census for Llano County, Texas, Jane "Jensie" Barrington, the widow of Thomas Whitfield Barrington, is living in the Township of Llano in Llano County, Texas. At home are six children. Jane is listed as "Dee" Barrington, age 41, born in Georgia. Her parents are also listed as being born in Georgia. The children living at home are Payton who is listed as 14 years of age. Payton was born, according to the 1900 census in January 1893. The other children are Marshall age 12, Eddie age 10, Willis age 8, Fannie age 6 and Wesley age 3. All children were born in Texas.

Amanda Jane Pate was only married to Thomas Barrington for a short time and had no children with him. I am her great grand daughter as well as her great neice. My parents were second cousins.

Margaret, I believe that we have discussed this marriage before but I am still confused.

What is the order of marriages for your Amanda PATE? And what is her date of birth? The marriage certificate on file in Williamson County lists the marriage of Thomas W. BARRINGTON to MISS Amanda J. PATE on July 5, 1887, which indicates to me that this was her first marriage.

My Joseph Francis PATE married Mattie BARRINGTON, niece of Thomas Whitfield BARRINGTON, also in 1887 in Williamson County, TX. He had a sister, Amanda J. born in 1858.

On the 1870 census Tom BARRINGTON is married to Permelia (or Parmelia) and living next door to his mother in Williamson County. I cannot find him in 1880. On the 1900 census Thomas BARRINGTON is in Dallas County and shown as being married to Ida for 14 years (marriage about 1886) and their first child was born in April 1887 with several additional children. This makes it almost impossible that this Thomas married Amanda in July, 1887. From the names of his and Ida's children, this is the son of Marshall M. Barrington.

I have had no luck finding another Thomas and Amanda BARRINGTON. I have had no luck finding Joseph's sister Amanda after 1880.

I think that there are too many unanswered questions to state that we know which Amanda and which Thomas were married in Williamson County in 1887 and what happened to them. It would be very helpful to have you post the sources for your Amanda's marriages and also where she appears on census records. This is a very puzzling line.

We are working on the Barrington /Smith connection. Amanda Jane Matilda Pate is my great grandmother and my great aunt. My mother and father were second cousins. Amanda Jane Pate was born 25 Feb. 1849 Palestine Anderson Co. TX. She died 17 Mar. 1926 in Georgetown Williamson Co. TX. She is buried under Mrs. J. A. Gonziles in the Whiteley Cem. near Georgetown TX. I did not have your correct email address so could not reach you. Thomas Whitfield Barrington did marry Amanda on July 5, 1887 in Georgetown Williamson Co. TX. These are her marriages that we have found so far. Married John R. Leonard 7 February 1869 Belton Bell Co. TX had daughter Mary Jane Nancy Leonard. In 1872 she gave birth to a son William Green Huffman Jr. son of William Green Huffman in Williamson Co. TX. No marriage found. 1874 gives birth to son John Andrew Cloud son of George Augustus Cloud in Williamson Co. TX, 1876 Wiley Preston Cloud (my grandfather) in Williamson Co. TX also son of George Augustus Cloud, 29 May 1879 marrys Thomas T. Allison in Williamson Co. TX. 22 May 1880 Martha Jane Allison was born in Williamson Co. TX. 1880 Census Williamson Co. TX Amanda age 30 and Thomas Alisons name crossed out on the census. 1884 birth of Annie Lorena Love father Robert Love ,Williamson Co. TX. 1885 birth of James Lorenzo Love father Robert Love Williamson Co. TX. 5 July 1887 Amanda married Thomas Whitfield Barrington in Georgetown Williamson Co. TX. 1895 Amanda married Joseph A. Gonzales in Mexico City, Mexico. 1900 Census Amanda in Williamson Co. TX age 42. 1910 census, 1920 census in Williamson Co. TX. 1926 Amanda dies in Georgetown where she has resided for over 50 years. Her home is still standing in Georgetown. So far the only marriages found were Leonard, Alison (Allison), Barrington, and Gonzales. I believe that your Mattie Barrington is Martha Barrington (age 29) on the 1870 Williamson Co. TX census living with her brother Henry (age 17) in the home of Dan Huggins age 78 and his wife Lavise age 51 both born in NC. Lavise was the widow of Marshall Mathews Barrington. After his death she married Daniel Huggins 26 September 1864 in Natchitoches Parish LA. Lavise was the former Lavise Lunsford. We are trying to determine if Thomas W. Barrington was married to Jane Jence Ida Smith. She maybe the daughter of John Wesley Smith and Delana Caroline Wooten Smith. They are the Parents of my Aaron Smith, husband of Rhoda Alice Pate.

Very interesting! I'll print out your message and see where I still have questions. I know there are still some dates and facts that don't seem to add up. I sure hope we can get this untangled.

I have received some more Barrington information on the family of Elisha Barronton through to James Peyton Barrington and his descendents.

Actually the Martha Barrington that you mentioned is the aunt of the Martha Barrington that married Joseph Francis Pate and was my husband's great grandmother. My husband's great grandmother was not born until 1872.

These people with the same names can be very confusing!

Margaret, I think that you have the most colorful ancestress that I have ever seen documented. It must be great fun, but a great challenge, to trace her.

I still wonder about that marriage to Thomas W. Barrington, however, for the following reasons:
1. On Thomas W. Barrington's marriage certificate, the bride's name is listed as MISS Amanda J. Pate. This would have been a 6th "marriage" for your great grandmother.

2. It seems unlikely that a 38 year old woman marrying for the 6th time and with at least 7 children was passing herself off as an unmarried woman. However, I suppose stranger things have happened.

3. She was referred to as Amanda Huffman on her marriage record when she married Thomas T. Allison in May, 1879. So, she did not maintain an Amanda Pate identity through all the marriages.

4. There was at least one other (probably more) Amanda J. Pate(s) in Texas at that time (of marriageable age).

This is a very challenging family to trace and I appreciate all the help you have provided. Some day I hope we have the pieces to get this untangled. Even if Amanda gets untangled, there is still the question of Thomas W. and his overlapping marriages. I am still looking for another Thomas W. of the correct age (without success I must admit)..

As far as we have proof the only marriages are Leonard where she used Pate. Alison where she used Hufman and Barrington where she used Pate. I did find an Amanda Pate born 1879 in the 1900 Census for Bell County TX. She was the daughter of Madison Mayberry Pate and Lucy or Amanda. This Amanda is related to jinks on the Pate line on Rootsweb.
