Alexander Berry

My great great grandfather was William Rideough. He was born in Colne, Lancashire in 1855 and lived in Rawtenstall, Lancashire as a farmer. He married twice and on both marriage certificates he identified his father as Alexander Berry. I convinced my brother to do his DNA and ironically the closest match was a "Berry Plain Berry". When doing a research search William is untraceable until he gets married to Hannah Metcalf, which suggest that his mother married someone else and he grew up under that name and when an adult assumed his mother's maiden name. Any help with the Berry situation would be appreciated.

Sophia Bock Berry mystery

Sophia Ana Bock is my great-grandmother. She married Henry S. Lundgren, and had seven children with him, including my grandfather, George Lundgren. They were both born and lived in Chicago. Sophie was married before to someone with the last name Berry. I know of one child, Lena Berry, that was from that union. I am not sure of the father's name. However, much to my surprise, in the 1880 census I found a family living in Tennesee, William Berry (the husband), Sophia Berry (wife), and three other children, Ferdinand, Mary and Robert. I would have ignored this, but saw that Sophia indicated that her parents were from Wurtenburg, same as my Sophia. Does anyone have this family in their family tree? Why did Sophia leave Chicago in the first place, and then Tennessee for Chicago with only one of her children? What happened to the other, younger children? Lena went on to marry someone in Chicago, Theodore Bollacher. - lots of facts and names. I hope someone can shed some light on this.

Does anyone have information on Thomas Sharp, b. 1777, d. 1833? He married Elizabeth Berry in 1903 either in TN or Whitley Co., KY. Elizabeth b. 1786, d. 1865. They came from Sullivan Co., TN to settle on land at Rockhold in Knox Co., KY. (Whitley County was formed from Knox in 1818.) Thomas was a surveyor and the Dishman Post Office was in their front yard and was operated by their family for many years. He started the Sharp family cemetery at Rockhold - Meadow Creek - Tyes Ferry Road...located on a beautiful mountain top on his property. He and Elizabeth are buried there. Thomas & his twin sister Thelma died of the asiatic flu during an epidemic. Thomas came to Knox County with his bachelor uncle William S. Sharp, his brother John Sharp, his twin sister Thelma.

Thomas & Elizabeth(Berry)Sharp's children were the following: Sarah, Benjamin Franklin, William Epperson, Caroline Frances, Amanda Melvina, Thomas J., Nancy A., Nathan John LaFayette & Patterson Monroe.

Contact me at Siler44@aol.com.
My maiden name is Hollie Berry. My father's name is Douglas Berry. His father's name is Jerry Berry (now known as JR Berry). I call him Papa B. His father died in the Waco tornado. I'll ask him what his father's first name was. I do know his father died in a furniture store with 2 of his cousins. His father died when he was in high school. He got a scholarship to Baylor that was begun for children whose parents died in the tornado. He is very interested in geneology, so if he is one of the people you are looking for he would be glad to talk to you.

I am looking for the husband of Permelia "Amelia" Berry b. Accomacck Co., VA. The 1860 census shows her as Amelia Waterhouse, husband born in NY. Her 2 sons were Frank and Joseph. Frank was my great, great grandfather, his son Samuel my great grandfather, and his son George Washington Waterhouse my grandfather. Permelia's husband does not appear with her in any census, and she remarried, therefor I assume he either died or they divorced. The names of George, Samuel, Frank, Leonard are repeated through the later male line repeated, and there are Samuel and Joseph Waterhouse listed inearlier NY state census's, but I have no current way to determine if either are Permelia's husband.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Cindy
Noticed you wrote a Scott (:something:) regarding Berryville and that one of the sons started Berryville. Blackburn Henderson Berry from what I understand started the town & was postmaster at Ashley in Oct l849 but it was then moved to Berryville. My Mother, Lorena Bell Berry, was the daughter of Bell McConnell Berry part of the second family of Blackburn & born in 1857 . Blackburn had married a Caldonia Gordon Davis as a second marriage. It also looked like Scott had not picked up your message. Any information you have on that side of the family would be appreciated.

Fred H. Berry of Rockland, Maine

I am not connected to this family but came across the following while working on other research. Our historical society in Rockland, Maine has lots and lots of stuff about this family. It is from the Rockland, Maine Courier-Gazette:

Nov. 9, 1870 – Berry Bros. stable (Fred H. and Chas. H. Berry on Limerock Street)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Feb. 17, 1882 – The Thorndike Hotel having recently been renovated, and additional rooms added by annexing the third floor of the Rockland Opinion block, have changed hands and is now being operated by H.C. Chapman and Berry Bros.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

May 5, 1882 – Though it is so early in the season, the amount of business at the Thorndike Hotel under the present management has demonstrated that it will be necessary to still further enlarge and increase the accommodations at this popular house. Workmen commenced on Monday on the foundations for an extension of the rear wing of the house, in order to provide a new dining room on the first floor and additional sleeping rooms above. The work will be pushed so that the additional rooms will be available this season. There has been laid out on the hotel since Messrs. Chapman and Berry took possession, nearly $15,000, and that it has been expended to advantage is apparent to all those who have gone through its spacious and pleasant offices, the pleasant and elegantly furnished parlors and sleeping rooms and broad corridors. There are baths and toilets on every floor, fitted up in the most modern style, the expenditure for plumbing alone having been around $1,500. The table is furnished in a style not surpassed by any hotel in New England.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sept. 1, 1882 – Messrs. John T. Berry, Davis Tillson, Robert Crockett, G.W. Berry, F.H. Berry, A.F. Crockett, A.B. Crockett and C.H. Berry have formed an association to bring water to this city in mains from Juniper Hill to the northwest of the city.  A large gang of men have been put at work excavating a muck swamp on the hill, which is apparently the bed of a former pond.  It is proposed to restore the pond, which is believed to be fed by living springs, and it is expected that an inexhaustible supply of pure water can be obtained.  The hill is so high that a powerful head will be obtained.  The pond will be about three acres in extent.  A steam pump keeps the place free from water while the work is carried on.  The Association will proceed and organize in due form under the general statute, and prosecute the work under a charter obtained by Gen. Tillson a year or two ago.  It is yet too early to judge of the success of the project, but the gentlemen interested feel confident the plan is a feasible one.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Sept. 26, 1884 – Messrs. Fred H. and Charles H. Berry have purchased the St. Nicholas Hotel property and will take possession October 1. They will remodel the building and open it as a first class house in a short time.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Oct. 29, 1886 – Fred H. Berry has bought of S.M. Veazie and J.F. Fogler that the two adjacent building lots on Middle Street just easy of Broadway, and will thereon in the spring put up a fine residence.  Mr. Fogler has bought a lot of W.H. Glover & Co. on the same street opposite Dr. Tibbetts’ lot and he and E.B. Hastings will also erect houses adjacent to each other in the spring.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

May 13, 1887 – Mr. Fred H. and Charles H. Berry have purchased the field on Summer Street, north of Mr. Samuel Pillsbury’s residence, and extending to Lincoln Street. Both intend to build large and fine residences there. Mr. Fred Berry will build at once and work on the lot has been commenced.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
July 1, 1887 – The foundation and basement of Mr. Fred H. Berry’s fine new house at the corner of Lincoln and Summer Streets, is about completed, and a large quantity of lumber is on the spot.  The basement is built of “pebble” work with arched windows and is very handsome.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Nov. 27, 1894 – Fred H. Berry, born in Rockland Oct. 30, 1843, libery stable and hotel business, was chief engineer of the Rockland fire department two years when John Lovejoy was mayor. Mr. Berry engaged in the livery business in 1867 and in the hotel business in 1881. He was admitted to Aurora Aug. 5, 1868, and is a life member. (History of Aurora Lodge)

According to what I know, Blackburn Henederon Berry had the town named after him etc. but then left for the gold country without wife and any family. He then remarried in California and had one child that I know of who was Lille Estelle Berry but could have had more. I met, who I always called Aunt Lil as that is what my Mother, Lorena Bell Berry called her, in Grass Valley. Aunt Lil did marry a Al Heslop.

Hello Malcolm

Thank you for getting in touch. I have not found any further information about my gr.gr.grandmother Elizabeth Berry bap. St. Peters Swinton, 15 Dec 1822. Many years ago a volunteer in Lancashire found this information for me but I have had no confirmation from other sources except that on the census where she described as being born in Swinton. On the census below you will see that she had a nephew, child of her brother probably
1871 census  Ancestry.com
RG10/4010 folio 147 page 36

Pendleton, Salford, Lancs     Ecc dist.
Hello Mary

I am researching Elizabeth BERRY, (married name?)born about 1831 in Pendlebury, who had a children baptised in St Peter's Church, Swinton, as follows:

Baptisms: 16 Oct 1864 St Peter, Swinton, Lancashire, England
Mary Ann Berry - Child of William Berry & Elizabeth
Born: 29 Aug 1864
Abode: Swinton
Occupation: Collier
Baptised by: H. R. Heywood
Register: Baptisms 1852 - 1876, Page 216
Source: LDS Film 2356299

Baptisms: 31 Aug 1870 St Peter, Swinton, Lancashire, England
Alice Berry - Child of Thomas Rawlinson & Elizabeth Berry
Born: 7 May 1870
Abode: Swinton
Occupation: Wheelwright
Baptised by: C. J. Bayley
Register: Baptisms 1852 - 1876, Page 309
Source: LDS Film 2356299

Alice Berry (aka Rawlinson)was my grandmother. I suspect that William Berry might be related to your Elizabeth Berry and would appreciate your input.

By the way, several new records were upladed to Lancashire Online Parish Clerk on 8th January 2010, including the two above, so it might be worth a look?

Regards

Malcolm Bland
