Re: Marguerite Border of California

My name is Desne. I am one of the granddaughters of Marguerite Border. Technically, I am a step-granddaughter. My stepfather was her son Larry Border. Marguerite ("Babe") Damon married Arthur Border and they had three children: Keith, Larry, and Ruth. They lived in Saskatchewan, then moved to Long Beach, in Southern California. After Arthur's death in the early 1960s, Marguerite continued to live in Long Beach for a while, then moved to Mendocino in Northern California to be with her daughter Ruth and Ruth's husband Paul Tay. Marguerite died in Mendocino in 1995, at age 104. She is buried next to her husband in Forest Lawn, Los Angeles.

I remember her so fondly. She was a strong woman, and I admired her. Some things I remember...
- In Canada as a young woman, she was the only schoolteacher in a one-room schoolhouse. She rode her pony "Scruffy" 3 miles to work and home each day.
- In Long Beach, she was a tireless worker as a nurse for the American Red Cross.
- She was an avid gardener and cook. In Mendocino, she cultivated huckleberries and made the world's most delicious homemade huckleberry jam. I'm so sad that nobody in the family has her recipe!
- She was a liberal Democrat and worked as a volunteer for the Democratic Party, both in Long Beach and in Mendocino. She was very outspoken in her views and loved to talk politics.
- She was an avid baseball fan; in her later years, she favored the Oakland A's.
- She was dedicated to service in the Presbyterian Church. Up until age 95, she was a familiar face as greeter at the door every Sunday at the Mendocino Presbyterian Church. In her last years, she was housebound but she often welcomed church members to visit her.
My name is Todd Border. Don't know much about my family history. however, my dad Wesley Alan Border (passed away Oct 7,1993) visited his great aunt Marguerite in Mendocino Ca at a Bed and Breakfast ( Blueberry Inn)? way back in the 80's. I guess she would be my great great aunt. Her husbant was my grandfather's (Alan Border) uncle. i know my dad recieved lots of letters from her. I have the Border family bible with lots of stuff in it. My family originally moved to Ontario and later to Saskatchewan were my dad was from. I'm in Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada.

My name is Sandra Gatov, I am the great-grand daughter of Marguerite Border. The inn that you are referring to is the Blackberry Inn.

I am the grand daughter of Ruth Border Tay and Max Gatov.

Granny was a wonderful woman, both strong and kind. Unfortunately I didn't get to see much of her, as we only visited once a year. I still have some of her pictures and birthday cards she gave me. I heard most of the family stories after she passed away, but I wish I knew more about her.

I've been helping Aunt Opal out with the family tree these past few weeks gaining more info to add to it.

Hi Kathie,
Been awhile since we've emailed each other, my computer crashed last year and being in the hospital for a little over a month from two surgeries pretty much kept me from doing anything.

Anita

A summary of James Border and Sophia Mason

Posted this summary of James Border and his wife Sophia Mason on my blog (http://thehistoryofmatt.blogspot.com/) - this is my earliest Border anscestor in Australia:

"My earliest Australian Border ancestor is James BORDER, born 1818 in Buckfastleigh, Devonshire, the eldest child of Thomas BORDER, a cordwainer (shoemaker), and Ann ROWLANDS. James married Sophia MASON (born 1819 in Ilfracombe, Devonshire, the daughter of Richard MASON and Agness HUXTABLE) in 1844 in Ilfracombe. James must have settled in Sophia’s home village of Ilfracombe as they had at least three children born there: Ellen in 1845, Sophia in 1847 and Richard Mason in 1848 (Richard died the following year). It appears they also had a son Richard in Pilton, Devonshire in 1851, who deceased the following year (1852).

The UK census for 1851 shows James and Sophia living at Pilton, a small village about 10 miles south of Barnstaple, with three children, Ellen, Richard M., and Sophia. James’ occupation is given as ‘woolcomber’, and it confirms all three children were born in Ilfracombe, like their mother. A woolcomber operated machines that separate the fibers ready for spinning – an occupation soon to be replaced by machinery.

In 1852 James and Sophia departed from Plymouth, Devonshire, with their two children Ellen and Sophia for Australia on the ‘Wilson Kennedy’, arriving in Sydney on the 27th December – they paid 5 pounds for their passage. James Border listed his occupation as a woolcomber and fellmonger, and both James and Sophia could read and write.

James and Sophia moved to the Carcoar district between Cowra and Bathurst, and had three more children in Australia: Samuel Litson (b. 1857, Mulyn NSW), Mason (b. 1859, Carcoar NSW) and Thomas (b.1861 Binalong NSW). When Samuel Litson was born in 1857, the family lived at Mulyn, Cowra (I’ve not yet located it), and James’ profession was given as shepherd.

Only two of seven children survived adolescence to marry – Sophia married Andrew MCCLYMONT in 1865 in Carcoar NSW, and Samuel Litson married Amy CASTLE (or CASSEL, in Wallaroo, Cowra NSW in 1884).

Sophia died in 1898, aged 79, and is buried in Cowra Presbyterian Cemetery NSW. In the 1903 Electoral Roll for NSW, James is entered as living in Cowra, with no occupation (he was in his 80’s), and he died in 1913, aged 94 – his place of death was listed as Mulyan, Cowra NSW, and he is buried at Cowra.

There’s clearly quite a bit more to piece together about this family in NSW."

I noticed while searching for clues about the Border family in Devon, that there is a book/publication titled 'The Border family from Devon to Durham' writtenby Lynnette Blaikie and published in 1987 in Brisbane, Australia. Is anyone aware of how one might obtain a copy of this, or does anyone have a copy?

I'd also love to hear of other Australian Border descendants.

Cheers
matt

After looking over the date that you gave for the death of Nicholas Border, I am wondering if there was more than one
Nicholas Border from that area. I say this because I have
a Nicholas Border born in 1733/34 in Maxatowney Township,
Berks County, PA. moving to Loudoun county, Virginia in about 1781. He next moved to Colerain Township PA about
1807, where he died in 1820.
This Nicholas was a witness or appraiser to the Estate of Frederick Ridenbaugh, also of Bedford Co. PA.

Yes, my research indicates there were a number and probably all connected. Going back to the 1752 tax list there's Conrad and Christopher Bader (orig. spelling of name) in Maxatawny as well as a George, Single. In 1767 you find Nicholas, a shoemaker; Conrad, farmer, and Sebald, blacksmith. Conrad had a son, Nicholas, and they did end up in Bedford Co.
In 1790 there's Nicholas Bader in Brunswick-Manheim, two males 16+, 2 males -16 and 2 females. In 1798 Nicholas Bader is found as occupant of a house in Manheim Twp. owned by Martin Dreibelbies.
This Nicholas died in Manheim and administration was granted his widow, Maria and Martin Dreibelbies on 15 Aug. 1799. I believe these were the parents of my Nicholas who first shows up in 1820 in Orwigsburg.

Appreciate any help and can provide data on Kantners/Lindemuths, related families.

Mary, I have a Christopher Borders b1763 near Schuylkill River
in PA, served in Revolutionary War, moved around a bit and ended
up in Greene and Darke Counties in OH. Married to Sarah. Had 1 child,
Christopher. No other info. Do you have anything to add? Especially
interested in military service, siblings, children and parents. Your
51 pg text intrigues me! Laurel
