You should both get books on genealogy to learn how to research backwards from recent relatives. Hard for people on a mailing list to help without more information, especially when you don't give dates. Talk to relatives, look at the censuses, get death dates from the SSDI and find obituaries. Books can tell you how to do it.

Diane

My g.g. grandmother Mary Brannan Carroll Langford had a nephew John Brannan who lived in Mason City, Iowa and a niece Brigit in Dubuque. We have a photo of John and his girl friend that I think is from the 1880's.

My ggg grandmother was Mary Jordan from the Ridge, who married Patrick Brennan. John Brennan (who may have been Patrick's brother) and Mary Rice lived in the Ridge when their children were baptised. This was the early-mid 1800s; Patrick and Mary Ann were in Canada by 1840, and John and Mary by 1851. Both families (and several other Brennan families) settled in Grey County in Ontario, around what would become Dornoch.

looking for info on Brennan family in England. Father was William Brennan. My ggrandmother Margaret was his daughter. I know of one other child named Ellen. I have found Ellen on the 1181 censu in London showing her born in Durham in 1859.
Margaret I have found also on the 1891 anmd later census. She married James Wilson who was a bootmaker last maker. Margaret was born about 1860 also in Durham. I have never found a trace of her in any Durham records. William was listed as a Blacksmith on Margaret and James's Marriage.I have also tried variations on the Brennan surname but had no luck either. Any help/suggestions greatly appreciated

In going through some old family pictures, I found several shots of a Harry Brennan. There were a couple of him at home in Heckscherville - one by himself, one with an aunt - and several that were apparently taken overseas. There was also an old newspaper clipping of him working on an army vehicle, which was apparently his duty while in service (his face is turned away from the camera, but the caption identifies him by name). He was apparently a good buddy of my father-in-law during their time of service in the war. If anyone is interested in these pictures please contact me.

I'm also trying to find my relatives in NY, NJ. My father's name was James Joseph Brennan. His father's name we believe was Edward and mother's name Anna. Edward was born in mid to late 1800s and died around 1930. Anna was born around the same time and passed away in the early 1960s. They had three children: Edward (who was hit by a car and killed in the early 1900s. James Joseph and Peggy (Edithe or Margaret Edithe... James and Peggy were born in or around Fort Lee, New Jersey. All of the above are now gone, and I can't find any information connecting them to any relatives. My father rarely spoke of his family. I had heard there were relatives in Connecticut, but have no other information. If anyone has any information on my relatives, it would be appreciated.

Based on the census data, he was also able to locate where my ancestors were born which resulted in my going back 3 more generations.

See if you can contact someone associated with one of the Liverpool sites that might be willing to help.
Outstanding!! Yes Father Tom from my tree was stationed in the Philipines. John Brennan who was married to Bridget Frain, had a son John. The younger John also married a Bridget, but I do not know her surname. Fr. Tom was their son. Fr. Tom had a sister May, and two brothers Michael and John. Fr. Tom died in 2004. I met him only once when I was quite young. I would be very interested on any information you would be willing to share on your family tree. Then they moved to Ft.Jackson, SC. He has a brother named Dan. My uncle Dan married a fine lady, and had twelve kids. My dad is 66 years old. I never met my grandparents on his side.

My name is Jim Mulvihill and I'm Chieftain of Clan Mulvihill and a long time researcher on ancient Mulvihill history.

As you may know, the Brennans (MacBranans) of Co. Roscommon are the same people as the Mulvihills. They composed the Corca Achlann tribe in the ages before surnames. The O'MaoilMichil surname was assumed in the late 10th Century, ostensibly in honor of a former Chieftain and hero, Maelmichil. About 150 years later a separate faction arose, switching surnames to MacBranan in honor of yet another tribe leader, Bran. Leadership vacillated between the factions after this point, but ultimately the MacBranans dominated. The Mulvihills were driven out of the Corca Achlann territory in 1416. The MacBranans suffered a similar fate a century later.

We've been tracking these changes through our Clan Mulvihill DNA Program, in which we find that this ancient tribe was built up over the millenia from at least four different tribes. The surnames Mulvihill and Brennan are today represented in most of these different parts, indicating that they most likely predated the assumption of surnames. See www.familytreedna.com/public/mulvihill

We also have been active in identifying ancient Corca Achlann sites within our area of County Roscommon, and locating historical records which bear upon the tribe.

We've tried, within Clan Mulvihill, to be inclusive. We have a number of Brennan members. In retrospect, it would have been more correct to name the group after the tribe, rather than one of it's surnames...but then nobody would have recognized it! We would like to introduce the Clan to more Brennans and to pool our resources to advance research on our common ancestry. We also have many members who now bear the surnames of Mitchell, Melville, et al, as a consequence of the English persecutions of the 16th-20th Centuries.

See also my site at www.mulvihill.net/genealogy

If you have an interest in working together, please contact me and let's talk about ways to integrate our research and recruit more Brennans into the fold.

Regards,
Jim

I am trying to find any informaion on Ellen Brennan, born in Co. Limerick around 1820 and died on May 3, 1891, in Queens, New York. She was buried with Julia Casey in Calvary Cemetery. Julia's maiden name was Brennan and her father was Thomas Brennan. I believe Ellen was Julia's sister, but she could have also been a sister-in-law. Not much to go on, I know. I have tried to find Ellen's death certificate, but don't think it is available.

She moved to US and married Michael Brennan who was born in Newmarket on Fergus Co Clare. They had 2 daughters Mary and Eithne. Eithne married Alfred Blake. Tom Freeman was a boarder and lifelong friend of Michael and Mary Agnes.

I would love to have a look at the photo if you manage to find it sometime.

Kind Regards
Jim

Good day, Jim!

I appreciate the offer, but it's really the Flynn and Leary (O'Leary) lines I'm interested in. I'd like to work on my direct ancestors before turning to cousins' lines.

However, if you know of anyone who is related to the folks in the photo, and who would like a copy of it, I'd be glad to scan it. (Of course, I have to figure out where it is - I posted this quite a while ago - LOL!)

Again, thanks for the offer.

Mary

God Bless you Jimmy,
Thank you for the connection between the Brannan's and the Kielty's. I would feel even more confident, if there was more supporting data attributed to this family. I had narrowed my search to the Boyle area and Kilronan parish. Michael McDermott states that he is from the Kilronan parish of Co. Roscommon in a plea to find his sister Winifred (whom is married to Thomas Brennan) in the Boston Pilot. They also have a sister, Bridget McDermott.
Thomas Brennan lists his origin as Boyle, Roscommon on his naturalization papers.
Maria, Michael and Winifreda Brannan, all born in Ireland, to Thomas and Winifred are not on that census. I am not sure if the died or stayed in Ireland.
I have thought that Thomas's father, born around 1790, was probably married to Maria Spollin or Maria Mulheran.
Please let me know if you see other possibilities.
I'm curious, how did you come to visit the Kielty farm. I believe there were Kielty's in Lowell, MA along with the Brannan's.
I have much data on this side of the ocean, but would love to know if there are any descendants in Ireland interested in our US history.
Thank you once again for your valuable contribution.
Patti

Hi Catherine
I've just checked Griffith's Valuation for a Thomas Brennan in Kilronan. The only record I can see is for a Thomas Brannan (the spelling often varied) farming in the townland of Rover Lower (on the east side of Kilronan Mountain). I was there just last week looking for the land that Owen (Eugenio) Kielty farmed - he was in the townland of Greagnageeragh which is just on the other side of the hill. It looks like like he was the sponsor at Mary Brennan's baptism.

Jimmy

Hi Christine,
My great uncle, Michael Brennan emigrated as a young man from Galway City to New York and is said to have become editor of the New York Sun. I've been unable to confirm this so far. I have a photo of him taken by Saul of 2034 Third Avenue, NYC.
He was the son of Myles and Mary Egerton Brennan (nee Thornton) from Annaghdown, Co Galway. Michael was christened in Galway on 27 March 1870 and his godparents were John Brennan and Honor Cody. His siblings were John, Bridget, James, Patrick, Catherine and Mary. His brothers all migrated to Western Australia where I'm from and his sisters remained in Galway.
Has your research uncovered any New York Brennans who may be connected to the above family?
Regards, John James
OK, I didn't know she was born in Liverpool. Irish records won't help you, but there should be an English civil registration system just like it. Ask someone on one of the English lists, like Liverpool, to help you with that if no one on the Brennan list is family with it.

Diane

All the Chrisitna Brennans named have a father listed, an Owen, a James and two Michaels.

On every census that Christina is mentioned in (1881, 1891, 1901 and 1911) she has birth place as Liverpool.

Daniel's name wouldn't be in the birth index. You would have to get Christina's birth registration from the GRO (4 euros if you include the volume and page number from the index) and see if Daniel is the father.
Hi Denis, many thanks for such a speedy reply..My Brennan's are such a puzzle.
I don't know for definite re an Armagh connection but I know they were travelling through northern Ireland and during the late 1920's the son Thomas Brennan was living close to the boarder in Raphoe.

Louth, Carlingford, Meath, Mayo, Sligo, Athlone, Galway, Dublin and later Donegal do figure strongly in the equation.

At some stage in the 1930's they had a dance hall in Carlingford but it was closed down by the clergy.

It said that Thomas Brennan senior was a land steward on a large estate around Kilkenny.

Young Thomas Brennan married in Co Cavan 1907.
He travelled throughout Ireland with his travelling road show and bazaar which at some stage was named the Connaught Bazaar.

There is a suggestion that young Thomas may have had a brother in the priesthood but we haven't been able to confirm this.

Young Thomas and his wife seperated in the late 1920's, no idea what happened to him after that time.

I had hoped to find young Thomas, wife and 2 children on the 1911 Irish census with the hope of discovering where Thomas was actually born, unfortunately they do not appear to have filled in the census forms although we know for sure they were in Ireland at the time of the census.

As you can imagine, it's a maze.
Perhaps one day I'll uncover some lead into my Brennan's.
Regards Jackie.
Re: Christiana/Christina Brennan

You may be able to find Christina's birth in the Irish birth civil records, which began in 1864. If you search the index on familysearch.org, you'll find one Christina Brennan born in Dublin County in 1868, as well as one each in 1867 and 1866. One of them might be yours. The civil record gives the father's name but not the mother's. However, it should give the place in Dublin where she was born, which would lead you to her baptismal record, which should have the mother's name.

Diane

I have only just found the connection to Armagh, so don't have any more information at present. There is a Thomas in my line (born 1876) but his father was Hugh.

What part of Armagh are your side from?

Denis
denph62@yahoo.co.uk
