Hello, I am looking for information about a Mitcham Surrey England man of the 1800s who inherited a very large estate from his father James MOORE d 1851, but though he is called son in the court documents, he did not use the name Moore, instead had name James BRIDGER. If you or anyone reading this knows more about these men, I would love to hear from you.

hi ingrid,
did you ever find parents of lawrence bridger of slimbridge? i have that his son was samuel (also married to a mary) who was born 1584 in slimbridge and died there 31 july 1650. i am with you all the way until james goodman bridger as i am descended from his sister nancy margaret bridger. i've never used ancestry.co before and don't quite understand the rule about not posting anything i didn't create. i have found this information in several different sources over the years but didn't "create" it. i'll be curious if you have other information. thank you.
susan

Elizabeth Bridger(1648-1686) supposedly married Thomas Lear (1666-1695) in 1686 and according to what I have found had three daughters and a son. Does anyone have the dates of their births? They are Martha, Patience, Colonel John and Elizabeth?

I would also appreciate information on the birthplace of Elizabeth's mother, Hester Pitt/Pitts born 1627. Some say Isle of Wight, Virginia and some say Jamestown, Virginia.

Thanks for all and any information.

Reuben in 1841 was living with his mother and father in Dean with Henry , Kissia, Samuel, Jane and Amelia or Emilia and later with George and Fanny. They had previously lived in Lodsworth. Anthony was a son of John & Pheobe who got married on 2 May 1787. They also had other children:Elizabeth, Ann, Phebe, John, William, Mary, Thomas, Charlote, Jane, Frances, and Charles. A big family!
I'm not sure how to relate John , who married Pheobe, to his parents. However I cannot ascertain that it was the John born on 18 March 1768 who married Pheobe. How have you managed to link them? Nevertheless this John was born to parents named John and Mary. Indeed there was a marriage between John Bridger and Mary Henley in Petworth but also another between John Bridger and Mary Barns in Tillington on 27 March 1763. I have a list of all baptisms in Tillington and there are 12 children born between 1763 and 1779 whose parents are listed as John and Mary. They definately have been borne to two different sets of parents as some of the birth dates are only a few months apart. I don't however know how to split them between the two families. Do you have any idea?

She moved to Lenawee County Michigan sometime before mid 1876 as she married Elisha Smith Hawley on 26 October 1876 in Adrian, Michigan. Other than the obvious assumption that her parents were Mr. and Mrs. Bridger, I can find no connection to her parentage except a few neighbors/relatives she may have been living with while growing up.
Marriage Lookup for Bridger and Binwell?

Hi,
I just got the birth certificate for James Bridger born August 27, 1837 in Billingshurst. Father is William Bridger and mother is Mary. Residence listed as "priors, Billingshurst". I always thought Mary's maiden name was Voice but the BC shows clearly "Mary Bridger, formerly Binwell". I can't find a thing on a Mary Binwell. I know from the later census that she was born in Hithe, Kent, but I believe they were married in Billingshurst about 1820. Can anyone look up a marriage for William Bridger born about 1797 and Mary Binwell born about same time, married in Billingshurst, Sussex please. I assume they married about 1820 as that was when the first child was born in 1821. Thanks.

Hello again,

Believe me, I've checked pretty much all that there is to check in order to find documentation to get me past 1796. I've frequented the Westsussexpast web site many times and found the site excellent in giving me background info and possible new leads to follow.

You mentioned James as being a farm bailif but I found that William was the farm bailiff in 1881, and James was living in Portsmouth working as a labourer on the dockyards. But, on the night of the 1881 census taking William was visiting brother Stephen in Fittleworth.

Something concrete will eventually come up which will get me past the brick wall. I usually find the breakthroughs come when I'm researching a sibling, child, neice, or nephew of the person in question. I'm just pleased I've managed to get back this far. But, it's at this point in my research that records become very few and far between. I shall have to go back into looking at land owner records, tax records, and the like.

With any luck, in the future, we might find a definitive link between our two trees.

Hi again, I have checked my notes and found that there was a Rhoda Bridger born to William (1796) and Mary Ann. This Rhoda was born in 1823 and seems to have been deceased in 1853. She is shown as being born in Billingshurst, Sussex, and census documents show her as being enumerated with William and Mary Anne as their daughter. My notes also show there was a Job Bridger born in 1825 and died in 1839. Does this correspond to any of your findings?

As a certainty, I have William Bridger born 1796 in Billingshurst, Sussex,; married to Mary Ann ? about 1820. Children are William (1821), Peter (1827), Ruth (1829), Mary Ann (1831), Anthony (1833), Stephen (1835), James T (1837 my G.G. Grandfather), and Sarah (1840). James and Sarah are listed as being born in Chichester, Sussex. Whether this was the registration district rather than their birthplace, I am not sure. Stephen went on to marry a Mary Jane ? and had 5 children (Ada, Ernest, Percy, Edgar and Frank) The last three were born in Pulborough. James (my G.G. grandfather) married in 1861 and lived in Portsmouth after his marriage.

Hi there. If we can link up the two Bridger trees and find a common relative that would be lovely. I know for fact that William Bridger of Wooddale Farm is our relative. I know too that somewhere in the tree there was a Rhoda but I haven't yet been able to place her. I may have some notes on her, which I will check for. Through which ancestor are you related to the Billingshurst Bridger family? I would love to share notes with you and perhaps I can find a way through this brick wall I have come up against and get beyond 1796.

Hello and thank you for your reply to my query. I have not been able to go back any further than William Bridger born about 1796 in Billingshurst, his wife being Mary Anne X from Hythe, Sussex. This William did live at Wooddale Farm, as you mentioned in your reply, so this is spot on. If I can find out who the parents were of this William, I would be thrilled. I believe there was a Rhoda Bridger in the family at this time so if I can link Rhoda Smart and William Bridger as this William's parents, that would be great.

I am also descended from Joseph Bridger(1628-1686)AND Dr. John Woodson (b. 1586), both listed in the Jamestowne Society. I have sent TWO letters (because I could not find an email address) to the Society address in Florida and I have received NO reply. So I'm assuming they are not accepting new members. It's very frustrating. I also sent inquiries to the First Families of America regarding John Woodson, who is also listed as an ancestor on their website, and again I have received NO reply to my inquiries.
Elaine Powell

Hi Ingrid,

You seem to have a lot of information about this family,so I am hoping that you have the parents of Elizabeth Bridger who married Thomas Lear (1596-1695). I originally had Col. Joseph Bridger(1628-1686) and Hester Pitts(1627-1674), but figured they couldn't have been her parents if she was born in 1600. It seems that a lot of people seem to have this information in their trees, but it doesn't make sense. I have another birth date for Elizabeth of 1648 which would make her some 52 years younger than her husband, which is possible, but not probable. Their daughter Martha Lear, supposedly born 1613/22 is another improbability. What do you think? Can you solve my puzzle? Maybe it will help a lot of other people out there with their improbable trees.

Thanks,

Brandy

Hi there I'm Judith Daft nee Bridger. I'm also trying to do my family tree on my father's side at the moment. All my line of Bridgers come down from a John Bridger who was of Millbrook Southampton. He was an Alderman or Mayor he died 18/4/1777 he married a Beata Deal He had three sets of twins plus four other children. I wonder if we are related it seems most likely so maybe between us we can link things up. My mother's name was also a Bridger as she married a first cousin so it gets a bit complicated.. My great grandfather was living in Uruguay and Argentina so that's where things probably get lost as they don't have good genealogy records. Anyway get in touch with me. I live in Queensland Australia now. My email addy is judaft@tadaust.org.au Hope to hear from you...

John and Leah Newland adopted Effie Z. McNutt 16 Feb 1880 in McPherson Co. KS. Effie was 14 months old. Effie's mother Sarah Elizabeth (Bridger) McNutt was born 1850 VA, died May 1879 in McPherson Co. KS.
Effie (now Newland) married Otis Homer Crow 25 Dec 1900 McPherson Co. KS.
Re: William BRIDGER b.1796 Billingshurst, Sussex - 8 Children!!

Well, having a child named Rhoda is an excellent clue. Naming conventions at the time would see children named after parents and grandparents. Having a grandparent, William's mother, named Rhoda is good proof of lineage. Also, it's not a particularly common name. With regard to recent (19th century) family history, I don't think I can be too helpful. I have deliberately stayed away from census and BMD documents, because I know you have already searched them. The only children I could find born to a William and Mary Ann in that period were William Bridger, christened 13 April, 1823, in Lurgashall, Sussex, and Sarah, christened 5 April, 1840 in Billingshurst. Also, I saw a James Bridger, working as a Farm Bailliff in Oxfordshire in the 1881 census. He claimed to be born in Billingshurst, but not necessarily to a William and Mary. Beyond this you should check the following site:

www.westsussexpast.org.uk/pictures/index.html

If you search for pictures of Billingshurst, you will get pictures of Billingshurst and Wisborough Green together.

I think we're on the right path then. I have actually taken your family tree back as far as Pulborough, which intersects with my Bridger ancestors who were from Warminghurst. With regard to your Bridger ancestors, if you have the name Rhoda, and I arrived at it searching independently, I would say this is fairly good proof that this is your ancestral tree. My Great-Uncle did research into the Sussex Bridgers in the 1920's. His research has proven to be 100% reliable. If you would like to take this research further I'd be glad to help, and no, I'm not a genealogical service, I'm merely another genealogical hobbyist.

This is what I have;

William Bridger + Rhoda Smart, married 7 Oct, 1793, Wisborough Green, Sussex. William Bridger (parents William and Francis Bridger), born 25 May, 1756, Billingshurst.
Rhoda Smart, born 20 Oct, 1769, Wisborough Green.

William Bridger + Francis Searle, married May, 1754, Pulborough, Sussex. William Bridger (parents William and Ann Bridger), born 23 Feb, 1733, Wisborough Green. Francis Searle, born 10 Sep, 1729, Pulborough, Sussex.

William + Ann Smart, married 1 Oct, 1730, Wisborough Green, Sussex.

That's as far as I can go without running into a new wall. In that William Bridger's (born 1733) birthplace emerges as Wisborough Green, I'm not as confident at linking the two family trees as I was before. However, I am comfortable with the above information and I believe these are your ancestors given the clues you already had about "Rhoda" and Wooddale Farm. I will check another site and get back to you again.

On the www.familysearch.org site there is a William Bridger christened on 4 May, 1794 in Billingshurst, which is in the Petworth District. William was apparently the son of William and Rhoda (Smart) Bridger. Rhoda was born on 20 October, 1769 in Wisborough Green, Sussex, which is also where she married William on 7 October, 1793. This William was born on 25 May, 1756 in Billingshurst to William and Frances Bridger. His parents were probably William Bridger and Frances Searle who were married at Pulborough, Sussex, which is the next village south of Billingshurst on the Arun River. They were married on 5? May 1754. I have also seen a reference to William Bridger of Woodhouse Farm, Billingshurst, Petworth in the early 19th century during my genealogical meanderings. I'll pause at this point to see if you agree with my findings.

Bridger Dilloway

In my family tree I have a curious change of names.
My G G Grandfather Thomas Dilloway was living with Emma Bridger at Colhook Common North Chapel Sussex UK as shown in the 1851 Census returns. For some reason he was using Bridger as his surname? In the 1861 Census both Thomas and Emma are living at Brinksole Heath Petworth Sussex UK but at this time they are using the surname Dilloway and have 3 children, John age 8, Thomas age 3, Charles age 1.

I have seen other documents where Thomas an Emma use the name Bridger-Dilloway?

Can anyone add any further information to help solve this puzzle?

Reg Dilloway
