Have you checked the Overwharton Parish Vestry Notes? They had a daughter, Nancy, who married Vardiman Jewell, my gg grandparents.

Good Luck with your search!

I believe the info forwarded to (Pat)Oliver Bridwell (when he was abt 7) back in the early 1900's abt his dad -JamesBridwell marrying after his mom's death (Clara) and having another son (his brother)may not have been right because I found records where his dad-James-had been in a county home and died there a few years after Clara's death. But that possibility does still exist. thank you

Furthest back i can get is Lord Kinkade(Baron)who lived in North Ireland, father of John Kinkade Sr. who migrated to America in about 1750 with his wife Jane. They had 6 children - James Kinkade 1761-1812, John Kinkade 176?-182?, Hannah Kinkade, Nancy Kinkade, Elizabeth Kinkade 1820-?, Margaret Kinkade 1775-1850.
Any info would be appriceated!

Sorry, I have been away from the message board for so long! The info I requested back in 2003 or so: I did find out thru Pam B that Clara Saltkill and James Bridwell had gotten married in Spencer, WV, but I cant seem to find the info thats written down. My oldest son is named James after the Bridwells also, and a new 'little one' is being born in abt July in the Bridwell-Salkeld-VanWey family (possibly a lt boy)and I am desperately trying to find the family info on the Saltkills, Salkelds, Saltkelds, Saltkells, but I feel like Salkeld is the real spelling. I still need info on James and Clara Bridwell line also.I have a subscription now to OneGreatFamily.com and it REALLy has a lot of info but is so time consuming, but Im not working right now. It said abt 450 Salkeld names, very few Saltkills, thanks

You may have noted a Strother Bridwell in some 1850 and earlier census records for Sullivan and Vigo county Indiana. This was a brother or cousin of Richard. I am a 3rd great-grandson of Strother and have transcribed the journal written by his son, Wm. Wallace Bridwell, which indicates during the Civil War that he had recieved word that Orlando had been wounded. W. W. Bridwell indictes that Orlando was a cousin. His journal is kept in the Methodist East Kansas Conference Archives of the Baker University library at Baldwin City, Kansas, but I have the exact quote and sitation here: [April 10th 1862 - Thursday morning . . . I heard the other day that Orlando Bridwell, a cousin, was wounded at Donaldson.] I will be pleased to pursue your question at further length as I have many speculations and troubles finding the ancestry prior to Strother.

Does anyone recognize this name? A 'Ledgie' Bridwell is enumerated as age 33 born ca 1877 MO to a father from Indiana and mother listed French? He married a Louise HEATH age 27 bca. 1883 MO and said they'd been married 12 yrs. (she would have been age 15 when they married.) In the 1910 census for AZ he, his wife and her brother Jackson M Heath age 19 also born MO are all living in the same household. I'm a Heath researcher trying to determine who this group is. 'Ledgie' Bridwell is working as a shingler.

Re: Walter Bredwell Descendants

Walter was the son of Richard Bredwell and Rachael Belt Bridwell Farnsworth. Orlando Bridwell being his 1st son 2nd Child, children are:
Maria 1838- ? namesake of Rachael's twin sister
Orlando 1840- October 24, 1862
James March 1846
Thomas 1848
Walter 1852 All born in Indiana.
The author of the orginal post and I have been in contact for several years and are still working to on this line

Richard was born sometime around 1817 in Virginia. I have yet to uncover if he died in Indiana and Rachael returned home or if they moved together back to Virginia/West Virginia and he died or Rachael divorced him. I lose all track of Richard after 1850.
The last record I have for Rachael is the 1900 census Murphy Dist. Ritchie county where she is residing with her daughter from William Farnsworth, Mary, and Mary's husband French Ferrell.

I am the 2nd great granddaughter of Richard Bridwell and Rachael Belt

Orlando died of disease in Helena Arkansas on Oct 24, 1862. A big thank you to Tim Beckman of the 11th Infrantry Reinactment group who researched this information for me

Steve, I would like you to e-mail me at Flbroomie2004@yahoo.com so we can compare notes on this family

Pam Bridwell Hughes

Re: Walter Bredwell Descendants

Coincidentally, I just this day stumbled across a Civil War pension application made by the mother of Orlando Bridwell, (a cousin of my g-g-grandfather Wm Wallace Bridwell), who served as a Private in Comp. C, 11th Illinois Infantry - enlisted 31 Aug 1861, died at Helena, Arkansas, 24 Oct. 1862. His parents were Richard and Rachel Bridwell (Bredwell) who you will find in the 1850 Indiana census, Sullivan county, Gill township.

None of this info. appears to connect with your inquiry except that Orlando's mother applied in West Virginia in 1887 for that pension with the name Rachel Farnsworth. I checked for verification that she was one in the same woman and found her in the 1870 W Virg. census, Wirt county, Burning Springs township with Thomas (20 yrs) and Walter (19) Bredwell living in the same household with her husband Wm. Farnsworth.

From this I would surmise that your Walter was born in Sullivan county, Indiana. Several of the Bredwell adults and children of that county in the 1840s and 60s seem to be namesakes of the children you listed: James, John, Oliver, and Lemuel.

I hope this helps and that in the passage of time since your post you are still a member.

Steve Bridwell
sbridwell@mchsi.com
Re: Bridwell Surname

Mary, this is Steve Bridwell -

I've given up on finding any leads back to Stafford, Virginia for Strother Bridwell or some connection to firm up a connection to any of the Bridwells of Sullivan county, Indiana who could be his parents. Therefore I have recently begun a detailed search for land deeds of the neighbors of Strother as listed in the 1850 census of Sullivan county and cross referenced them to the people his son, Wm. Wallace Bridwell mentions in his journal - especially in those pages where he mentions visiting his father and then stopping in on neighbors as he makes his way to a visit with his grandparents. It's a long shot and terribly time consumming, but the only option I can think of for narrowing down the search for the names of Strother's parents. Why couldn't Wm. Wallace B. have mentioned either name of his grandparents just once?!

One final word, and a frustrating one at that, I'm beginning to suspect the possibility that a John and Nancy R. Bredwell [found in the 1850 census of Sullivan county, Turman township] sit most often in the vicinity of Wm Wallace's walks between friends. I'm not predicting anything but they are looking more and more like kin. However, a search of them in additional census records or any other documents turns up nothing at all of them. And so we strive on.

Steve

The book that I have was purchased by my mother in 1978. It is about 188 pages long. The family started out on the East coast - mostly Virginia (at least my branch). It says that the Bridwells are of English descent. The family moved with the growth of the United States across Kentucky, Ohio, and to Missouri/Iowa. My branch is settled in Missouri, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Oregon. These were all brothers of my great-great Grandfather. One of the founding settlers of Oregon, John W. Briedwell, was with the 1852 group. It is well documented in Oregon history. Anyone you would like me to try to look up? What was your great-grandfathers name?
