At the BUFF Cemetery there is a marker at the entrance of the cemetery that reads:
In Memory of John BUFF (Nov. 2, 1801) & Margaret BUFF (Sept. 4, 1799). Does anybody know who these people are? Is this a husband and wife? Brother and sister? I descend from John BUFF (son of John BUFF, Sr). John BUFF, (Jr.) married Alice (Allie) Watts. From what I have found John BUFF, Sr. married Elizabeth Haus. John BUFF, Sr. was the son of Michael. So, who is this John and Margaret BUFF that is supossedly buried at the BUFF Cemetery. I have been albe to verify who most of the BUFF are that are buried at this cemetery. Alice Watts BUFF is buried in an unmarked grave or one marked by fieldstones. I took pictures of this cemetery in Sept. 1999.

Shame on me! I recently found that somebody used the parent information for John Buff, Jr. as written gospel and published it! I can only speculate that my John Buff, Jr. is the son of John Buff, Sr. and Elizabeth Haus. This speculation has also come from others researching the Buff surname, but to my knowledge, there has not been any documentation found to confirm this.

If you have ever researched the Buff line, I am sure you have found the name John passed down through generations and numerous Johns from the same time frame in different families or the same area. Lovingly known as the "name game".

For the most part, I can prove what I have found, but this is one I can not.

LESSON LEARNED.
